Short subjects willing to tackle tough subjects made the final cut with the Academy this year. That means audiences buying tickets to the “2024 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Animation” program should brace for poetic treatments of uncomfortable topics, ranging from incest to the Holocaust. Since the toon shorts tend to run short (just an hour to get through the noms), ShortsTV’s theatrical roster includes two additional “highly commended” titles, ending on a musical up note with “The Little Mermaid” co-director John Musker’s “I’m Hip.”
Hailing from Iran, Yegane Moghaddam’s “Our Uniform” finds a fitting style for a sartorial commentary: Using clothing as her canvas, the young director recalls how it felt to grow up in a country where girls were required to wear the hijab, or headscarf. She creatively experiments with various techniques, manipulating garments to suggest motion and drawing directly onto different fabrics (as when...

There exist three Oscar categories where it’s possible to watch all nominated films in one shot – that’s shorts, Animated, Live Action and Documentary. Packaged into three feature length films presented by ShortsTV, the Oscar Nominated Short Films open in theaters today for a four-week run on about 650 screens in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s 19-year tradition popular with audiences and theaters. Each film is also “an event. Then you can go argue about who you think should win,” says ShortsTV founder and CEO Carter Pilcher.
Theater owners can screen any or all of the three compilations however and whenever they want from a traditional run to a one-week marathon before the Academy Awards on March 10.
Pilcher says the animated bundle tends to do the best historically, although the 2023 short called My Year Of Dicks nudged out some of the family audiences that love animation, giving Live Action the win.

The Annecy Animation Film Festival, which hosts world premieres of buzzy U.S. movies each year, is set to expand its official lineup with the launch of a non-competitive section.
Called Annecy Présente, the section will give the festival the opportunity to host gala premieres of high-profile movies.
“Annecy Présente will allow festivalgoers to discover a wider range of films from different places and genres,” said Mickaël Marin, the director of Annecy festival and its industry market MIFA.
“The vitality of the Annecy festival underscores the exceptional dynamism of the animation industry around the world — every year we see the emerging of new territories in Africa, Asia and South America,” said Marin, who noted that audiences for animation content have evolved to comprise adults. While the number of animated features being produced is lower than live-action films, their impact is powerful, Marin said — particularly in countries like France, where animated...

The State of the Race
The animated short Oscar nominees are all acclaimed indies that explore such heady themes as the Holocaust, war, gender restrictions, incest, and mortality. They hail from the U.S., France, Israel, and Iran and embrace CG, 2D, stop-motion, and mixed media.
The field is led by the timely “War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko”, about a chess game played across enemy lines of an alternative World War I, with the help of a heroic carrier pigeon. It was specifically inspired by John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s popular protest song,...

It’s an innocent question: “What could happen to you there?” Many people would think the same of the grandfather’s comment when Louise is about to go for a swim, but doesn’t have her costume: “No-one will mind.” To some people, however, these remarks are indelibly associated with terror, and Stéphanie Clément’s short film is for them.
Shortlisted for a 2024 Best Animated Short Film Oscar, the film breaks rules from the start. There’s an image of an empty swing, an unfortunate cliché in such a strong piece of work, but the golden light illuminating it invites us to expect a happy, cherished childhood memory, and that warm, soft quality never goes away. As such it helps to emphasise the fact that bad things can happen in any setting, and that a middle class white child staying in an idyllic country location doesn’t have any guarantees of safety.
