When Robin Taylor Zander was a little kid, he loved spending his summers on the road with his father’s band, Cheap Trick. At night, he’d snuggle up next to his dad, lead singer Robin Wayne Zander, on the tour bus, and when they performed he’d watch every show from the side of the stage. “All I wanted to do was go up there,” he says. “I wanted to be Bun E. Carlos.”

Ahead of the release of Cheap Trick’s new album In Another World, guitarist Rick Nielsen reminisces about meeting John Lennon, his first performance with Robin Zander, and the first album he ever bought in this installment of Rolling Stone’s The First Time interview series.
Although Nielsen is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted guitar god, he actually got his start by playing drums, as evidenced by the first album he ever purchased, Sandy Nelson’s Let There Be Drums.

I haven’t picked up the guitar since they canceled me in Arizona almost two months ago. I was born on a farm down in Louisiana, and this is a flashback, because this time of year we were sharecropping in the fields all day.

With apologies to a song from 1979’s Dream Police, the Cheap Trick house is rockin’ with domestic problems. Drummer Bun E. Carlos—who stopped touring with the still-spry Rockford, Illinois, power-pop act several years ago, leaving under mysterious circumstances—and the band’s former manager, David Frey, are suing the other three band members (vocalist Robin Zander, guitarist Rick Nielsen, and bassist Tom Petersson) in Cook County Court. According to Courthouse News Service, the lawsuit stems from the “defendants' outright refusal to account for, or pay, hundreds of thousands of dollars which are owed to each of the plaintiffs ...

Cheap Trick have unearthed their first hit single “Surrender” more than thirty years after it climbed up the charts, only this time it has been revived as a Mariachi mash up and it arrives just in time for Cinco de Mayo. When Hornitos™ Tequila announced their Mariachi Mash Up competition, they encouraged up-and-coming bands to mash up one of five hit songs listed on their website, incorporating traditional Mariachi elements into a video submission. It’s doubtful they expected one of the actual bands to revisit their own song. The mariachi flavor actually suits the song surprisingly well. Good luck to the other bands that trying to compete with this. They may as well….surrender.

August 20, 2010: Cheap Trick, the legendary American rock band has been on a three-year cycle among albums during the last ten years, however, that doesn’t anyway mean that the band isn’t thinking about new material.
The band’s bassist Tom Petersson informs that they are in the city of Los Angeles and are brimming with ideas. They are also working with the producer Julien Raymond. He also says that they don’t have a ‘plan’ as such when it comes to new material. The band, he claims simply puts together newer ideas and when 10-12 songs are ready, they hit the studio to record.
