Carrie Underwood is credited as a performer, co-writer, and even co-producer on her 2022 album Denim & Rhinestones. However, she didn’t always have a role in writing and producing originals. Here’s what she said about making this collection sound like herself.

Underwood currently writes most of her own songs. However, these releases are typically created with a co-writer. “Hate My Heart” was co-written by Hillary Lindsey, Michael Hardy, David Garcia, and Underwood.
One of her most popular songs, “Jesus Take the Wheel,” was written by Brett James, Hillary Lindsey, and Gordie Sampson. One of her earliest hits, “Before He Cheats,” was written by Kara DioGuardi, Chris Tompkins, and Josh Kear.

Mickey Guyton sends out a prayer for healing to a troubled world in “Heaven Down Here,” her third new song to come out in 2020. “Heaven Down Here” follows closely on the heels of Guyton’s current single, “Black Like Me.”
Phrased like a conversation with a higher power, “Heaven Down Here” — which Guyton penned with Gordie Sampson, Josh Kear, and Hillary Lindsey — has the singer openly expressing her concerns. “I’m just so disappointed in the way this world is coming unglued,” she admits. Amid a steady pulse of bass guitar and rumbling piano notes,...

Hunter Hayes builds his new song “Wild Blue” around a percussive groove, singing over subtle piano about how the 27-year-old songwriter is undergoing a personal sea change. “Funny how you don’t know you can fly until you finally catch the wind,” he sings. “You think you know the part you play until somebody goes and rewrites the script.”
And then it all explodes, with Hayes delivering a soaring, cathartic guitar solo before the song returns to its subdued piano origin. The title track off Hayes’ just announced new album,...

Carly Pearce pulled double duty on NBC’s Today on Tuesday, performing her current single “Closer to You” and announcing the nominees for the 2019 Cmt Music Awards. The song is the Kentucky native’s first release from an upcoming second album for Big Machine.
Pearce brings her polished singing and confident stage presence to Today, underscoring the desire and longing in her lines about reducing the distance between two people. She didn’t have a hand in writing the tune — that honor goes to Hillary Lindsey, Gordie Sampson and Troy Verges...

Luke Bryan celebrates the things that naturally go better together in his new song “Knockin’ Boots.” A stripped-down, rhythmic track, the single is the first fresh music from Bryan since 2017’s What Makes You Country. A new album is expected by the end of the year.
“Birds needs bees/and ice needs whiskey/boys like me need girls like you to kiss me,” he sings, going on to name-check a country staple: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s 1987 “Fishin’ in the Dark.” Hillary Lindsey, Gordie Sampson and Jon Nite wrote the song,...

It was a little over a year ago that Carly Pearce released her debut LP, Every Little Thing, and, here at a house in Brentwood, Tennessee, the Kentucky-born singer-songwriter admits that, in some ways, it’s hard to identity with the woman who graces that album cover.
“As much as I love that album, and as much as I love that girl, I am not her anymore,” Pearce tells Rolling Stone Country, sitting on a stool in jeans and leather jacket. She’s back in Nashville for a brief stint off the road,...

Jay Smith, a guitarist best known for his work with East Coast rocker Matt Mays, died Wednesday while the band was on tour in Edmonton.
"Our guitar player and dear friend Jay Smith passed away this morning in Edmonton. As you can all imagine, we are completely devastated," Mays wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday evening, March 27. "However, in our heart of hearts we know that we need to Play on. Jay's family as well as the band know he would have wanted it that way.
