The MonsterVerse keeps getting bigger and bigger, with the TV series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" landing a second season on Apple TV+ (along with multiple other spin-offs in the works) and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" becoming the highest grossing Godzilla movie ever. (In case you missed it, you can check out our review of the latest monster mash right here.) The film takes place after Godzilla and Kong -- having joined forces for their battle against Mechagodzilla in "Godzilla vs. Kong" -- divide the planet between them. Godzilla stays on the surface, sleeping on the Roman Colosseum like a cat, while Kong goes on a little bachelor adventure in Hollow Earth.
However, things get complicated when Kong encounters a civilization of giant apes and winds up in a fight with their leader, Skar King. This leads to a larger battle against an army of giant apes and a...

The concept of monsters battling each other has been a central theme since the inception of the Godzilla franchise with the release of the very first Godzilla film in the 1950s. This idea of colossal creatures engaged in epic battles to the death continues to be popular, almost 70 years after its birth. The latest film bearing the Godzilla name is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and it featured a very unique take on Godzilla – the kaiju was pink. Not only that, but some fans have deducted the nationality of every major titan in the film.

Warning: This article contains kaiju-sized spoilers for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire."
It's all been leading to this. We've seen standalone movies for both Godzilla and Kong throughout this MonsterVerse, we've experienced their ground-shaking crossover battle for bragging rights a few years back in "Godzilla vs. Kong," and we're now ready to sink our teeth into their epic team-up event in "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" ... but that doesn't mean we're done pitting these larger-than-life Titans against each other purely for our amusement just yet. Iconic characters survive the brunt of time and stay relevant through generations by adapting to new themes and varying treatments—an aspect that is clearly noticeable when we take a look at the seventy-year journey of Godzilla in the pop culture landscape. In a journey that mimics that of another pop culture legend, Batman’s transformation in comics itself, Toho’s Godzilla movies have ranged from originating in grim-dark disaster horror-themed spectacles to pure campy monster battles intended for the amusement of the younger section of the audience to metaphorical sci-fi allegories. Such a variety of treatment has not only made character timeless but has also paved the way for the global popularity of the iconic Kaiju. Which is why we can have a Godzilla movie set as a post-World War II human drama and, within a few months, have another one radically differing in tone as a monster bash-em-up movie,...

Before Godzilla vs. Kong finished its opening weekend, genre director and lifelong kaiju fan, Adam Wingard, knew he had to get these two crazy guys together again. Despite releasing the film in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic—Godzilla vs. Kong was in fact one of the first bright spots for movie theaters in the spring of 2021 when social distancing kept cinemas at a quarter capacity—the vibe in the auditorium was still electric by picture’s end.
“I remember there’s a moment at the end of the movie when Godzilla and Kong briefly team up to kill Mechagodzilla,” Wingard says while stifling a sheepish chuckle at the absurdity of it all. “And when that happened, the roof blew off the place. After a stellar TV run with "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," which finally gave us a good human story within the "Godzilla" mythos, and an unprecedented Oscar victory for "Godzilla Minus One," Godzilla has returned to the big screen with another team-up between Godzilla and King Kong.
Part of what makes "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" interesting and unique among the MonsterVerse movies is its team-up of villains, Shimo and Skar King. They essentially serve as reflections of Godzilla and Kong, the former being a lizard-like kaiju with an energy beam, and the latter being a giant ape.
Though Shimo is barely even a character, Skar King is a fantastic addition to the MonsterVerse — a violent and evil despot like Koba in "Planet of the Apes," with a badass kaiju spine he uses as a chain-weapon and as a way to control Shimo.

It's sometimes hard to see, given humanity's arrogance and egocentricity, but the truth is that we all live on a shared world. The process of sharing a habitat was never an easy one to begin with, but it's something that's only become more complex and vital over the past couple years, especially since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing issues surrounding climate change. To put it bluntly: human beings, so used to being isolated, are barely able to co-exist with each other, so what hope do the rest of the species on Earth have?

The MonsterVerse franchise is an underrated contender in the cinematic universe wars, with a clear watching order that avoids confusion or an overwhelming number of entries. Part of the success of the franchise is that the continuity and canon are not overly complicated — well, it is a franchise about giant monsters punching each other in the face, after all.
After doing what all big cinematic universes do and expanding to TV — albeit with a really good show in this case, the MonsterVerse is back on the big screen with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The movie is set to not only bring the King of the Monsters and the Eighth Wonder of the World together once again but also bring a bit of a buddy-cop vibe to the MonsterVerse.

In Adam Wingard's "Godzilla vs. Kong," the two Titans clash viciously and almost push one another to the brink of destruction. However, the rise of a new threat, Mechagodzilla (possessed by King Ghidorah's consciousness), prompts the two to cooperate and take down their common enemy. Although Godzilla and Kong go their separate ways after this event, is this temporary truce meant to last? This question leads us directly into "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," in which Wingard has returned to orchestrate a memorable showdown between the colossal Titans amidst an unknown threat poised to destroy the world as we know it. While a classic premise for a creature feature, it is a story that fans of the MonsterVerse are eager to experience, especially with the promise of a brand new antagonist lurking in the shadows.

We are in a golden age of Godzilla and kaiju cinema. No matter your level of familiarity with the iconic Toho character, and no matter what aspect of the mythos you like, there is something for everyone. There's the acclaimed, Oscar-nominated masterpiece "Godzilla Minus One" that brings the monster back to basics. There's the thrilling TV show which puts a focus on its human characters, and, of course, there's also a bonkers series of blockbuster movies.

This year, Godzilla celebrates his 70th anniversary as the original, groundbreaking classic "Godzilla" was released in 1954. With all of those decades and dozens of films, it can be tough to break new ground. Well, Adam Wingard did that in 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" when he had the King of the Monsters get down on all fours and go "animalistic" on Kong during the film's climactic battle in Hong Kong. It's not really something we had seen before — at least not in that way — and it was certainly memorable. So, how did Wingard decide to have Godzilla do that in the movie, exactly?
Wingard participated in a Reddit Ama around the release of "Godzilla vs. Kong" back in 2021. A fan asked the director about Godzilla getting down on all fours. Aside from the creative choice, the filmmaker was also asked if Toho had to weigh in on the decision, as it...

Merian C. Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack's classic monster movie "King Kong" was released in 1933, so the monster turns 91 years old in 2024. That means he's definitely too old for this sh*t.
In Adam Wingard's 2021 film "Godzilla vs. Kong," the 70-year-old nuclear gorilla-whale and the 91-year-old mega-ape, both drawn by an ineffable, in-born monstrous instinct, had to fight. Over the course of many decades, Godzilla movies have taught us that if two kaiju ever appear in the same film, they instantly hate one another and have to start wailing on each other. It won't be until a tertiary monster appears — usually an "evil" one — that the primary and secondary monsters put aside their differences and team up to hang a beatin' on the new guy. This is what happened in "Godzilla vs. Kong." At first, the title monsters were enemies. When Mechagodzilla appeared, however, Kong and Godzilla pounded the interloper into the dirt.

This is what happened in "Godzilla vs. Kong." At first, the title monsters were enemies. When Mechagodzilla appeared, however, Kong and Godzilla pounded the interloper into the dirt.

For a Godzilla franchise that has basically established itself as a modernized, Americanized version of Toho Studio’s iconic Kaiju movies, Legendary’s Monsterverse is surprisingly inventive when it comes to the creation of gigantic monstrosities. Aside from the four primary iconic monsters of Godzilla lore, namely Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla, a major chunk of Monsterverse creatures are original additions. In addition to enriching the established Godzilla mythos, the monsters of Legendary’s shared universe, known as ‘Titans’, stand out on their own thanks to their cool, creative designs, which are a perfect amalgamation of natural world inspirations and inventive visual traits.
Legendary’s latest small-screen venture, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, has swung surprisingly hard, both narrative-wise and using a substantial budget to offer a monster spectacle of cinematic quality. The nuclear-powered Titans are integrated into the stories in a much better way than they were in the movies,...

"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" has been a pleasant surprise. Here is a movie tie-in show that succeeds at telling a compelling standalone story, all while also expanding on its source material in ways that make the Monsterverse movies better.
The show focuses on Cate and Kentaro Randa, two people who discover they are half-siblings and their father had two families, each previously unaware of the other's existence. The rest of the season deals with the fallout of this discovery, as each struggles with their daddy issues while bonding with their newfound sibling. Where the Monsterverse movies have struggled with making us care about the non-kaiju characters, 2023 was a great year for humans. "Godzilla Minus One" gave us a fantastic human story of redemption, and now "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" is giving us some heartfelt human drama.

From the hidden depths of the sea, to the farthest corners of the globe, legendary monsters lie in wait. These colossal and fabled creatures, broadly referred to as kaijū, remain dormant or lurk in the shadows until there is no mistaking their existence. During the course of their travels, they often menace civilizations or battle other beasts of a similar size. Their legacies are formidable and their powers are devastating.
Yet despite their sheer enormity and astonishing abilities, audiences today may find it difficult to imagine the likes of Godzilla being genuinely scary. Their destruction can be shocking, but the monsters themselves don’t always strike fear in mankind’s heart. Even so, there are those instances in the course of Japanese kaijū cinema — from Godzilla, Gamera, or otherwise — where viewers are genuinely unnerved by what they see on screen.

Legendary’s MonsterVerse Godzilla TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is set to premiere on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Friday, November 17, followed by one episode every Friday through January 12. (You can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here.) In anticipation of the show’s premiere, we’re taking a look back at several of Godzilla’s previous adventures to see how they stack up against each other. For the sake of keeping it as lean as possible, we’re focusing on his earliest days, going all the way back to the original Showa era, consisting of his very first outing in 1954, his first clashes with the likes of Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah and his cyborg counterpart, Mechagodzilla, before concluding its run in 1975. To add more familiarity to the pot, we’re also including his string of American blockbusters, from...

Take cover because the monster of mass destruction, Godzilla, is coming to Pluto TV next month, with a channel devoted to the kaiju legend — and a few other iconic monsters. Hey, come to think of it, Godzilla Goes to Pluto would be a great movie!
In an official statement, Pluto hyped their Godzilla channel with the following: “The King of the Monsters has made landfall on Pluto TV! Emerging in 1954, Godzilla has become a global icon and symbol that has transcended time and pop culture. After debuting as a terror that descended upon Tokyo, Godzilla has fought numerous foes and gained new allies over several distinct eras. While each film stands alone in its own moment in time, the evolution of Godzilla followed advancements and film and technology along with cultural trends, yet always staying rooted in the origins from 1954. Between October 6, 1997 and September 30, 1998, 256 episodes of Godzilla Island, a TV series spin-off from the Godzilla film franchise, aired on TV Tokyo in Japan. Twenty-five years later, Godzilla Island is finally getting an official international release, complete with English subtitles… and it’s being released through YouTube! An episode of Godzilla Island will be released on the Godzilla Official by Toho YouTube channel every Tuesday and Thursday.
If you’re a Godzilla fan who hasn’t heard much, if anything, about Godzilla Island, it’s understandable. Each episode of the show is only 3 minutes long, and the kaiju featured on the show weren’t brought to life through “suitmation” like in the Toho movies. Instead, the monsters are portrayed with toys created by Bandai. The first episode of Godzilla Island can be seen in the embed at the bottom of this article, to give you an idea of what the show is like.

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Series: "Mobile Suit Gundam"
Where You Can Stream It: Funimation
The Pitch: Civilian teen Amuro Ray becomes the pilot for a prototype mobile suit, or manned robot, defending the Earth Federation and its space colonists from the forces of Zeon.
In "Mobile Suit Gundam," the operative word is sensō (war). Yoshiyuki Tomino's groundbreaking 1979 mecha anime series is a sci-fi war epic, grounded in practical human concerns. It just happens to involve giant robots.
Though its loud primary color scheme shows the vestiges of previous "super robots" like Mazinger Z, the Rx-78-2 Gundam — piloted by young Amuro — turned the tide of anime toward a more realistic vision of mechs as military machines. Going forward, the new breed of "real...

Godzilla feature films can be separated into six separate, distinct continuities. From Toho's 1954 original "Gojira" until "Terror of Mechagodzilla" in 1975, there were 16 films in the "Showa" era. Beginning in 1984 with "The Return of Godzilla" and running until "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995, was the "Heisei" era. Roland Emmerich's 1998 American film was, after the fact, folded into a new rebooted continuity which began in 2000 with "Godzilla 2000." That was the "Millennium" era. That era ran until 2004 and closed out with "Godzilla: Final Wars," a film where Godzilla fights just about every monster imaginable. In 2014, America took a crack at kaiju films again with a new "Godzilla," now part of a multi-film "MonsterVerse" era. Perhaps in response, Japan made "Shin Godzilla" in 2016, the only film to date in the "Shin" era. Shortly after "Shin Godzilla," there was also a trilogy of animated films on Netflix. Call those films the "Netflix" era.

The culmination of the first wave of MonsterVerse films, "Godzilla vs. Kong" delivered on the title's premise and then some. In addition to having Godzilla slap Kong around (and vice-versa), the film expanded the kaiju-filled world by introducing the Hollow Earth. Indeed, the center of our planet was revealed to be a lush environment that literally flipped the world on its head, laying out an expansive origin story for Kong and his fiercest competitor along the way. Just don't compare it to Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth."
A sequel is well on its way, but "Godzilla vs. Kong" already did the heavy lifting when it comes to laying the foundation of its monster-ridden universe. The Hollow Earth once housed the large creatures that now terrorize the surface land, including Kong's deceased relatives. The giant ape's return to his homeland is a turning point in the story,...

It's good to be the king (Kong). The Eighth Wonder of the World only just made his return to the big screen in 2021 with "Godzilla vs. Kong," the fourth entry in Warner Bros.' MonsterVerse and the first movie to pit everyone's favorite Big Boys against one another since Kong taught Godzilla the value of eating his vegetables in 1963's "King Kong vs. Godzilla." Adam Wingard's film was also the first real box office hit of the pandemic era (so far as U.S. releases go), tossing theaters a lifeline at a time when they desperately needed one and grossing over 470 million at the worldwide box office.
