- She studied art education at San Jose State Teachers College, where she concentrated on painting. A professor said her paintings resembled textiles, encouraging her to try that medium. After graduation, she took weaving classes at Chicago's Hull House. She earned a second bachelor's degree in decorative art, architecture and applied textile design at the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree in art education at Columbia University.
- She learned traditional weaving styles in France and Sweden. She also studied in many other countries, including Italy, Mexico, Japan and India. Returning to the United States, she opened her first weaving and textile design studio in San Francisco.
