She studied art education at San Jose State Teachers College, where she concentrated on painting. A professor said her paintings resembled textiles, encouraging her to try that medium. After graduation, she took weaving classes at Chicago's Hull House. She earned a second bachelor's degree in decorative art, architecture and applied textile design at the University of California, Berkeley, and a master's degree in art education at Columbia University.
