A new tale of Christmas folklore is twisted into a paranoid mythical slasher story with There’s Something in the Barn. The production company, Charades, has just sold their horror comedy to major markets all over the world with multiple deals. The film comes from Norway filmmaker, Magnus Martens, who is a veteran TV director of series like Fear the Walking Dead and Luke Cage. 74 Entertainment and XYZ Films who have produced Dead Snow have also produced this film.

Deadline is reporting that the streamer has announced the upcoming fifth season.

Alexander Dreymon, who plays Saxon warrior Uhtred of Bebbanburg, said in a statement, “Playing Uhtred for five seasons has been a wonderful journey.”

Added EP Nigel Marchant: “With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.”

News of the conclusion means that Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novel series will not be fully adapted since the fifth season is said to be based on the ninth and tenth books in the 13-pear series.

The good news for fans is that the final season is currently in production, so there should be some semblance of a conclusion when it's all said and done.

“The Last Kingdom” has been renewed for a fifth season at Netflix. Time to celebrate, arselings!

The cast posted a video on social media making the announcement, which can be viewed below. The news comes just under three months after the release of Season 4 on April 26. Season 5 will consist of 10 episodes, as did Seasons 3 and 4.

The series is based on “The Saxon Stories” novels by Bernard Cornwell. It follows the adventures of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon), a warrior born a Saxon but raised as a Dane, in ninth and tenth century England. Uhtred becomes an unlikely ally of King Alfred of Wessex (David Dawson) and his family as the king seeks to unite all the kingdoms of England under one ruler as Vikings ravage the country.

Filming has commenced on the fourth season of The Last Kingdom for Netflix, the hit historical drama based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling novel series The Saxon Stories.

Alexander Dreymon reprises his role as Uhtred, joined by new cast Stefanie Martini who takes on the role of Eadith, Aethelred’s new love conquest, and Aethelred’s new right-hand man Eardwulf, played by Jamie Blackley.

After the death of Alfred, the alliances between the kingdoms are fractured. Uhtred believes the timing is right to challenge his uncle Aelfric, played by Joseph Millson, and take back his ancestral home, Bebbanburg. However fate shifts in a different direction, leading Uhtred to realize that his destiny is tied to Alfred’s dream of a united land. Since the turn of the Millennium, Scandinavian literature, ranging from the works of Jo Nesbø to Stieg Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy, as well as Scandinavian television, such as The Killing and Borgen, has been released to much critical acclaim in the English-speaking world. Despite this, the cinematic output of the three nations hasn’t attracted as much attention, despite the release of some excellent films since 2000.

Chicago – Just as Edgar Wright’s “Shaun of the Dead” was a wonderful homage to the work of George A. Romero, I feel like Tommy Wirkola’s highly-buzzed Nazi zombie film “Dead Snow” is an ode to the work accomplished by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell in the films of the “Evil Dead” series. Not only is Ash, Campbell’s character, directly mentioned by a character in the film but the style, story, and even amputations are straight out of the ‘Cult of Ash’. Being inspired by horror greatness doesn’t always lead to quality itself, but this cult-hit-in-the-making nearly lives up to its gory ancestors and will clearly have a loyal following for years to come.

The Norwegian Dod Sno,, or for North American horror fans Dead Snow, will release on DVD this week and the film is worth a second look. Dead Snow is one of the best foreign films to be released in 2009 and the film has been reviewed here (Dead Snow Review). From the review: "not since 'Shock Waves' has the use of Nazi zombies been given such effective attention" (28Dla). Now the DVD has some extras to start of the film's release with a bang. Dead Snow does everything a splatter-zombie film is supposed to do. It gathers a group of young people in a remote spot, slowly unleashes an at first mysterious deadly force on them, picks off the characters one by one but backwards from the least to the most significant, and has the requisite number of bloody moments – eyes are squished, intestines are re-employed for interesting external uses, and jaws chomp down on writhing bodies. I haven’t read any reviews or production histories of the film but this polished, well-photographed effort has the flavor of a calling card film. It pleads, “I can put a coherent commercial property together so please hire me.”

All that being said, Dead Snow, along with other recent horror films, such as Drag Me to Hell and the numerous ’70s remakes, raises some interesting questions about the state of horror.

“There are no good jokes that don’t involve poop, pee or semen,” someone says in Dead Snow, but Norwegian director/co-writer Tommy Wirkola would clearly disagree with his character. Where bodily fluids and parts are concerned, blood and guts are the humorous props of choice in his movie, and its best moment is a literal cliffhanger with a human and a zombie clinging to another ghoul’s unfurled intestines.

Which is not to say that Dead Snow goes completely over the top in either its comedy or its filmmaking.
