The Dragon Ball series has built its combat from the level of martial arts battles to that of cosmic, multiversal tournaments. There are a lot of differences and changes made to the combat, but the basic unit seems to remain constant.
Ki, the fundamental unit of energy that Goku learns about as a kid under Master Roshi, is the same energy that transforms into other forms and is the reason for the strength of most of the powerful beings in the universe.
Whis and Beerus are the cosmic entities that Goku and the Z fighters have been in contact with the most, and being an Angel and a God of Destruction, they still use Ki extensively. But it is always for physical enhancements. What if someone used Ki to increase their intelligence? What if it were a villain?
Ki is the basis of all evolution in the Dragon Ball verse...

Dragon Ball Super fans have officially been treated to Ultra Ego Vegeta’s voice for the first time by way of an exclusive performance by Vegeta’s English Va, Christopher Sabat.
Legendary English voice actor Sabat has had his hand all over the Dragon Ball franchise. Starting with his work on Dragon Ball Z, Sabat has voiced multiple Dragon Ball characters (often at the same time), from Piccolo, to Yamcha, Shenron and, of course, Vegeta. Most recently, Sabat dubbed the English voices of adult Vegeta, adult Yamcha and Shenron in the latest Dragon Ball series, Dragon Ball Daima. Dragon Ball Daima was embraced by critics for its beautiful animation and more lighthearted adventure storyline akin to that of Og Dragon Ball, but many in the fandom criticized it out of their desire to see the Dragon Ball Super anime return instead. Dragon Ball is not just one of the most popular and lucrative anime franchises but also a household name. Generations of kids have grown up imitating the legendary ‘Kamehameha’ in their bedrooms. The latest installment, Dragon Ball Daima, has rejuvenated that sense of adventure that everyone craved from the series for decades.
Daima not only gave fans a hit of nostalgia but also took the franchise to new heights. It’s not just filled with crazy power-ups and back-to-back fights, but also has enough comic sequences and world-building to actually give it depth. And the reason behind its success is none other than Akira Toriyama.

Toriyama’s Dragon Ball stands out as unique because of the immensely distinctive powers and personalities that the major antagonists depict. Of these, Perfect Cell remains one of Dragon Ball’s most iconic villains. Even though he was one of the earlier ones, his massive potential for evolution meant he was a fearsome opponent who would keep pursuing growth and never stop getting stronger.
Cell was at a level that he could take the best from the many entities and adapt that into himself. If Gohan had not unlocked his potential and used Super Saiyan 2 to defeat him, the Earth might have become Cell’s domain.
Cell might be able to use Kaio-Ken, which was unique to Goku
Cell wasn’t just any being; he was carefully created from the DNA of Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Frieza, some of the strongest beings with different racial traits. Cell can naturally perform all their unique techniques.

Speaking of the latest volume, the cover features Orange Piccolo, Beast Gohan, Ultra Instinct Goku, Ultra Ego Vegeta, and Super Saiyan Full Power Broly. Inside its pages, Toyotarou shared, "The characters on the cover of Volume 24 are all in their strongest forms."
He added. "As I said before, I wanted to show the balance of power between all five of them so I drew it this way. I worked harder than ever on this cover, but I don't think I'll be able to spend this much time on another cover in the future. On April 17, Dragon Ball's official site featured an original illustration of Beerus, the feline God of Destruction who makes his franchise debut in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. The Archive published the image with a comment Toriyama made regarding Beerus' creation. "Humanoids were getting a bit overdone, so I thought this time I'd make Beerus look like a cat," he said. According to the site description, Beerus' overall design was "modeled after Toriyama's own beloved cat." Dragon Ball has been a comfort series for me for a very long time. From a purely Shonen anime that was focused on power scaling and battles, to a more layered and complex series. This happened because of the increase in the focus placed on the characters.
That is why Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is extremely impressive; it brought something special to the table, especially in terms of its emphasis on family. It was a deeper look into the generational series that Dragon Ball has become.
But while the movie gave us a solid Pan moment, by learning to fly out of self-preservation when pushed by Krillin (mother bird move), the manga went and did something that elevated her character tenfold. Instead of flying away from danger, Pan flies into it, showing the courage worthy of a Saiyan warrior.

I miss the days of Dragon Ball Z when every single fight was iconic and memorable. Especially the fight between Piccolo vs Android 17. The way his claws scraped, the tension, the angles, the alien feel Piccolo had made him more than just a side character. Those were Piccolo’s glory days, as he fought on the sidelines with the Saiyans.
Piccolo has slowly been relegated to a more milder role as time passed, becoming a mentor and a spectator in all the major fights. But the one thing that made him iconic is his Namekian identity and the fact that he was someone with a unique heritage as well.
But something’s off in Dragon Ball Super now as they seem to be slowly, subtly, but surely taking our favorite Namekian and…smoothening him out. Piccolo has five fingers now and no sharp nails. Worst of all, his iconic shoulder pads have been reduced.

Dragon Ball is a legacy series, but the world around it has changed in the past few decades. The author of the Dragon Ball Super series, Toyotarou, has never hidden his admiration for Western animation.
In a candid interview, he confessed he’s more inspired by movies than manga, with a particular fondness for Disney, Marvel, and Pixar. This might seem strange, considering the uniqueness of Japanese storytelling, even more so when it is the lead artist of Dragon Ball Super, a tale that is set in its Japanese roots.
But for those who’ve followed the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc closely (more popularly known as the Moro Arc), the Western influences on Toyotarou’s work are apparent in the entire feel and direction of the arc.

Og Dragon Ball anime fans would be remiss not to recognize Kame House -- Master Roshi's iconic home base. However, an original draft page from Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga shows that Roshi's house initially had a completely different look.
On April 11, 2025, the Akira Toriyama Archive section of Dragon Ball's official site unveiled a colorized draft of a manga page first published in Weekly Shonen Jump on Oct. 8, 1988. As shown below, the scene showcases Bulma visiting a version of Kame House with teal-colored siding and a black roof. The Archive description highlights Toriyama's unique color choices: "The bright colors used for the Kame House evoke the feeling of a tropical climate, where the fine placement of the shading also perfectly captures the dazzling brightness of the sunlight," the site's author wrote. However, in the Dragon Ball anime adaptation, the house's siding is light pink with a dark red roof.

In the ever-expanding world of Dragon Ball, theories often imagine the return of long-gone villains in new forms. This does work out, as seen by the return of Frieza more than just a single time.
Of the many theories revolving around Dragon Ball Super, there are few that are as compelling as the concept of Goku Black’s rebirth and return. Not to mention, he is bringing along a new ability that can only be called “Dark Instinct.”

Dragon Ball is a legacy series that is famed for its unique and iconic antagonists. Be it Cell, Frieza, or Majin Buu, all of them are extremely unique and stand out from the usual antagonists in the Shonen series. Even after decades of anime, I cannot forget the impact that these characters had.
Of these, there is one villain who once fell to the Super Saiyans but never seems to give up. Be it after he was chopped up by Trunks or defeated by Goku, Frieza always seems to come back.

“Can he beat Goku though?” is a classic response to every power-scaling debate in the anime community. Part meme, part truth, as Goku has enjoyed the status of the strongest character in Dragon Ball for decades. Every time he fumbles, fans are only waiting for him to strike back stronger because simply losing isn’t an option for the Saiyan.
Up until the conclusion of Dragon Ball Z, it was clear that Akira Toriyama struggled with having any characters surpass Goku. However, things have changed since the beginning of Dragon Ball Super. The introduction of new characters allowed the creators to challenge the Saiyans in new ways.

It's the age-old question that Dragon Ball fans have argued over forever. Who would win in a fight: Goku or Vegeta? The two main characters are among the strongest Saiyans in the Dragon Ball universe and went head-to-head several times, but one of their most impactful conflicts was in the 2022 movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. During an interview to promote the tankōbon release of the manga series, creator and writer Toyotarou talked about the duo's fight, which happens during a post-credits scene.
The newest volume of the manga series was released this week, and the franchise's official website unveiled an interview with the artist in which he himself brought up the rivalry between Goku and Vegeta. Toyotarou asked if interviewer Maria Makinoever wondered who was the strongest, and she commented about Vegeta defeating Goku in the movie. Toyotarou confirmed it and underscored that Vegeta's victory was decided by Akira Toriyama himself before his death.

The world of anime and manga was never the same after Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama died. However, it's pretty safe to say that Toriyama-san's legacy will live on forever, and his fans and pupils will keep the Dragon Ball show going. The Dragon Ball Super manga entered a lengthy hiatus following the author's death, but recently the series returned to a one-shot chapter in which creator and illustrator Toyotarou paid homage to the mangaka.
The illustration celebrating Toriyama's body of work came in some special pages of Dragon Ball Super's chapter #104, titled "The Birth of Saiyaman X." The story focuses on Trunks and his obsession with superheroes. In one of the special pages, Toyotarou illustrated a page populated by several characters created by Akira Toriyama, and the artist didn't limit himself to the Dragon Ball franchise. Doesn’t it leave a bad aftertaste when you watch a show that’s pretty compelling, but then you see some characters having it easy in their life while others, whom you might be cheering for, always get the short end of the stick? That’s indeed the case, even with Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball series.
No offense, but Goku is undoubtedly the perfect fit for being the main character of the series, and I have several reasons to back up my claim. However, it’s not like I care about Dragon Ball for Goku only. While the series does have a rich cast of characters, how can anyone not love my boy Vegeta?

The guy has been struggling with his receding hairline since he was a kid, and Akira Toriyama still had him face the harder way in life!

Few rivalries in anime history are as legendary as that of Goku and Frieza. Their journey is not one that can end on a short note.
From their fateful first clash on Namek to the past of the Saiyan race and their connection to Frieza to their forced uneasy alliances, a lot has happened between the two.

Frieza has seen a lot of evolutions and forms, but it has to stop at some point, and the end should be an epic finale to not just Goku and Frieza’s long-time rivalry, but the end of Dragon Ball Super as well.
The Naruto-Sasuke parallel: A rivalry that goes beyond hatred
It might have been extremely black and white before, but after battling across installments in the franchise, it can be said that the two have somewhat of a connection and respect for each other’s strength.

If you think Jiraiya from Naruto or Sanji from One Piece are the biggest pervs in anime, then you couldn’t be more wrong! While those two are definitely guilty of ogling the ladies, they at least know how to keep it together. But there’s one character who always takes the cake – or rather, tries to take a peek under the cake, without any consent whatsoever!

Multiverse plots are a dime a dozen when it comes to superhero media, and Invincible War was the first time since Spider-Verse that fans were actually satisfied with what they had seen on screen. Given its similarities with Dragon Ball, there is a section of the fandom that cannot help but wonder how a similar situation could play out in the world of Dragon Ball Super, with a focus on Goku.

The Multiverse in the Dragon Ball Universe is different than what we have seen in most other forms of media. Dragon Ball Daima’s epic final battle between Demon King Gomah and Super Saiyan 4 Goku is one fans will never forget. The finale was a fitting farewell from Akira Toriyama as the last confirmed piece of Dragon Ball media he directly worked on before his death. Viewed on its own merits as a stand-alone story, Dragon Ball Daima’s series finale provided a fun and satisfactory ending to the story it set out to tell from Episode 1. As part of the larger Dragon Ball franchise, though, the anime makes zero sense.

One of the franchise's most iconic animators and character designers suggests that future Dragon Ball stories could involve overlooked and underdeveloped characters from the series. Bardock, the Saiyan father of Goku from Planet Vegeta, is a strong candidate for such a story.
Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Bardock’s character designer for the 1990 anime TV special Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku, was interviewed at Made in Asia Spring 2025 in Brussels, Belgium, in early March. The interview was conducted by social media user @/vondbz and translated by @/Venixys on X (formerly Twitter). Among the many questions (and art commissions) Nakatsuru took during the three-day anime convention, one involved past Dragon Ball events that were significant but either happened offscreen or were severely underdeveloped compared to other monumental moments in the franchise. Nakatsuru was asked if he was interested in going back and exploring those brief but essential moments, animating them for the first time.

Vegeta and Bulma's son from the future knows how to dress for every occasion — never trading, looking good for fighting good. Being a part of Dragon Ball‘s animation team might seem like the biggest dream come true to many. But in reality, it was nothing short of a headache to actual animators who worked on the projects. The amount of detailing on the characters made almost every major staff member frustrated.
One character in particular that made the lives of animators difficult was Cell. This guy had way too many spots for anyone to be excited about animating him. But in order to stay true to Akira Toriyama’s designs, animators had no choice but to keep working with a smile on their faces.

In Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball verse, Goku is always shown to be the strongest character. With iconic transformations and countless moments that send shivers down the spine of its viewers, fans ardently believe that there’s none on par with the Saiyan.
Goku and Gohan. Credits: Toei Animation
This steadfast belief made sense, until the Cell Games reached their peak, showcasing how Gohan had the potential to become the strongest Saiyan that has ever lived. This notion made sense, but Toriyama-Sensei had other plans for him, and sidelined him, ensuring that Kakarot remained the primary face of his magnum opus.
However, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero reminded the fans about the dormant Saiyan’s potential, and how his Beast Form is the first step to toppling Goku’s mastered Ui form.

The return of Dragon Ball Superis on the horizon after Chapter 104 last month. While we don't know when exactly, fans should stand ready for the exciting announcement that Dragon Ball Super's manga will be returning and tackling the overpowered Black Frieza with a completely stacked cast of powerhouse characters.
Toyotarou's recent artwork revealed Dragon Ball Super's five main characters moving forward – Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, and Broly. Each has the power to rival God-level characters and their own motivation to take down Frieza once and for all. And with their strongest forms, they might actually have a chance.

In Dragon Ball Super, the God of Destruction mantle traditionally transfers upon the previous holder’s death. The rule that has been constant across the multiverse in Super is that there can only be one God of Destruction at a time.

But this doesn’t make sense when we consider the fact that Beerus hinted at Vegeta being a candidate for a God of Destruction. Moreover, Beerus even asked Goku, and the latter said he was not interested. So, assuming that there is no way that there can be more than one God of Destruction, how will Vegeta become one?
Vegeta has a peaceful life and seems to have no interest in taking on the responsibility of being ‘The Destroyer’, but considering the way that he is being trained by Beerus, it looks like the sphinx cat-man is grooming a successor.

Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, a longtime animator and character designer for the Dragon Ball anime franchise, has shared his thoughts about a sequel series without the late Akira Toriyama. Db Times interviewed Nakatsuru during the Made in Asia Spring 2025 event, which took place in Brussels, Belgium, from March 7 to 9, 2025.
Nakatsuru’s interview with the Db Times was translated by social media user @/Venixys on X (formerly Twitter). In the interview, Nakatsuru was asked if he would like to participate in a hypothetical anime remake of Dragon Ball. In the world of Dragon Ball, the unique point has always been the transformations. Be it Goku, Vegeta, or Gohan, they are constantly trying to reach higher peaks and get stronger. Essentially, evolving, which is what makes the Saiyan race so intriguing and different.

Even though transformations like the Ultra Instinct of Goku, and Ultra Ego of Vegeta are out, the series needs to increase the power level to continue pushing the limits. So what if there was a form that was extremely powerful, with a level that even Goku himself couldn’t attain?
That’s where a new Silver Super Saiyan comes up. Toyotarou could introduce this form to up the ante in the series and revolutionize the franchise.
The combination of the most deadly powers in the Universe
It is usually Goku getting the strongest transformations, and that is fine for a while.

Dragon Ball is a legacy series, and it hasn’t changed much since the times of Dragon Ball Z. A new installment, especially one that was canon, was needed in order to change things up and become an engaging show.

One of the most important aspects of Daima is the fact that it introduced the Super Saiyan 4 into the main story (canon). The idea of the SSJ4 might have come from Dragon Ball Gt, but a recent interview has confirmed that Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball Daima was designed by Toriyama himself.
