Debbie with a D
- Actor
Debbie with a D is a New Orleans, Louisiana based drag queen who started her show biz career in musical theatre. In 2022 she appeared (uncredited) in the re-imagined Queer as Folk in episodes 1 and 3 - 8 as herself.
In February of 2023 she was featured in the Verizon "Create Your Culture" campaign for the Samsung Galaxy S23.
Prior to this she graduated from the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine with a Master's in Public Heath in 2013 has a successful career managing HIV and STI testing at a local New Orleans clinic. While building her career, she would also perform shows at Le Petit Theatre in the French Quarter and worked for the Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans. Eventually she decided to combine the forces of her passions and take public health to the streets in drag and take drag and LGBTQ representation to the public health offices of Louisiana. Notable examples of these efforts include drag events called "Debbie with Plan B" where Debbie would bring free rapid testing kits, plan B, contraceptives and health care referrals to local bars and drag shows. Debbie has also performed in drag and spoken at the Louisiana Integrated Prevention Services Meeting in 2019 about health care access particularly for the LGBTQ community and those in need if HIV/HCV care or access to PrEP.
Debbie with a D "draguated" from the New Orleans Drag Workshop (Cycle 8) with many notable and talented local legends. Debbie is now a performing member of the Krewe of Armeinius; established in 1969 as one of the oldest gay Mardi Gras Krewes with an annual house ball. Debbie has competed in the annual Bourbon Street Awards on Mardi Gras Day and won the Best Drag Category in both 2020 and 2022 for her campy and over the top haute couture drag costumes. Debbie can also be found around many of the French Quarter restaurants performing at drag brunches that are usually part of (but not limited to) Poppy Tooker's Pop Up Drag Brunches. These brunches are associated with the local NPR affiliated radio program called Louisiana Eats! with Poppy Tooker. Debbie is the back cover girl and a featured drag queen in Tooker's Drag Brunch Book that features classic recipes from some of New Orleans' most famous restaurants.
Whether performing for brunches, Bourbon Street, or friends at local bars Debbie loves telling a story with her drag numbers. With her performance background it's no surprise that her numbers give you a flair for the theatrical either in the story, the nostalgia, or in the outfits themselves. If some public health messaging, resources, and work towards equitable access to health care for the LGBTQ community (especially trans and BIPOC communities) of the deep south can be incorporated, even better!
