R&b legend Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds is happy his Super Bowl performance is over — sort of.
“I feel relieved — now I can breathe,” he told The Hollywood Reporter outside his suite following his moment on the field Sunday. “Before it was moments of nervousness and then I’d be chill and then I’d get a little nervous again. Right before they introduced me [I was like], ‘Oh shit, there it is.’ I just have to be chill and just try to concentrate on the song.”
“You know the words, but it’s a different kind of song. It’s not something that you sing every day and you’re on the spot,” he added of singing “America the Beautiful” at the State Farm Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

Hanson has been mmm-bop’ed off “The Masked Singer.” The pop star brothers were unmasked on Wednesday’s episode as the Russian Dolls.
The trio became the first group to compete on the show; last season, the couple Clint Black and Lisa Hartman performed as a duo under the Snow Owls costume. But the Hanson brothers told Variety they were attracted to the idea of pulling off another “Masked Singer” first. Early on, the show’s panelists couldn’t even figure out how many performers were on stage.
“It was very clear from the beginning they loved the idea of playing the game,” Zac Hanson said. “It was, ‘Hey, let’s play with this idea of how many people are on stage.’ Whenever we could, we tried to keep playing that game.

Big hits tend to win Grammys. That’s just science. But is it possible to be so big you fail? The two songs that previously held the record for the longest-running number-one hit in Billboard Hot 100 history were both nominated for Record of the Year, but lost. Now that Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus‘s “Old Town Road” has broken that record with 19 weeks in the top spot, will it also break the curse by winning the top prize?
“One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men was the first song ever to spend 16 weeks at number one, and it was nominated for Record of the Year in 1996, but lost to Seal‘s “Kiss from a Rose.” In fact, Carey was shut out entirely that year even though her album “Daydream” was also up for Album of the Year.

How the companies are doing it, though, is entirely legal on YouTube, thanks to a type of Google advertising that one digital marketer describes as “the legit way of juicing streams.” Three sources with knowledge of major-label marketing campaigns say that Universal Latin and Latin labels in the Sony system have been spending aggressively to boost the views on new videos. Lil Nas X made history on the charts with his country-trap hybrid hit “Old Town Road,” but that’s not the song he performed at the MTV Video Music Awards. Instead he jumped 60 years ahead for a futuristic performance of “Panini.” Watch his performance above, and check out the complete list of Vma winners here.
The 20-year-old hip-hop star was one of the most nominated artists at these awards with nine bids including Video of the Year and Best Hip-Hop Video for “Old Town Road,” plus Best New Artist for his breakthrough year as a whole. He didn’t win those prizes, but he didn’t come away empty-handed. He took home Song of the Year for his inescapable hit, and the video was awarded Best Direction.

“Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus spends its 15th week at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart dated July 20. That means it’s just a week away from tying the all-time record of 16 weeks held by “One Sweet Day” (by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men) and “Despacito”. But just when he thought it was safe at the top, on July 8 Billie Eilish dropped a remix to her current number-two hit “Bad Guy,” which could give the song the boost it needs to run Lil Nas X off the “Road.” That remix features a verse by none other than Bieber, who thus could prevent his own record from being matched.

On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart dated July 13, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus‘s “Old Town Road” notched its 14th week on top, which puts it in rare company. It’s only the 10th song ever to spend that many weeks or more in the top spot. But is it the best ever to rule the roost for that long? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Seven other songs spent exactly 14 weeks on top. The first to accomplish that milestone was “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston in 1992. Then Boyz II Men tied that record with “I’ll Make Love to You” in 1994. After that, Los Del Rio ruled for 14 weeks with “Macarena” (1996), as did Elton John‘s combo single “Candle in the Wind 1997″/”Something About the Way You Look Tonight” (1997), “We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey (2005), “I Gotta...

Trying to beat Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus‘s “Old Town Road” on the Billboard charts has been a road to nowhere for everyone from Taylor Swift to Shawn Mendes, and the Hot 100 singles chart dated July 13 was no exception. The song has now topped the chart for 14 weeks, making it one of the 10 longest-running chart-toppers in history. Now it’s just two weeks away from tying the record, so it might be time for Mariah Carey and Luis Fonsi to panic.
Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men teamed up in 1995 on the elegiac single “One Sweet Day,” which was the first song ever to spend 16 weeks at No. 1. That record held for more than two decades before Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber tied that mark with “Despacito” in the summer of 2017. “Despacito” was finally knocked out of the top spot when Taylor Swift‘s “Look...

Apologies to any artists trying to release new songs this season — Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus‘s “Old Town Road” is number-one for the 13th straight week on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart dated July 6. In doing so, it achieved two impressive feats. This is now the longest number-one run for any hip-hop song in Billboard history — and the longest for a country song too if you also consider it representative of that genre, which I do. And it also holds off yet another strong challenger to the throne: “Senorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, which debuts at number-two.
With its 13th week on top, “Old Town Road” surpasses 12-week hip-hop chart-toppers “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth, and “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas. Lil Nas X and Cyrus now tie for 10th place on the list...

YouTube is looking to ramp up the quality of music videos that live on its platform -- particularly clips of yesteryear that don’t meet today’s crystal-clear quality standards.
In collaboration with Universal Music Group, YouTube is looking to remaster iconic music videos from the likes of Billy Idol, Boyz II Men, Lionel Richie, No Doubt (pictured above), George Strait, Smokey Robinson, The Killers, and more. YouTube is working to improve both the video and audio quality of the aforementioned Umg clips, which it likens to “priceless paintings or sculptures in museums” that drive cultural influence but occasionally “need some TLC,” per a release.
The updates will roll out to 100 music videos today, which are now available in the highest audio and video quality. YouTube supports up to 4K video quality, though clips were previously only available in standards designed for linear TV viewership. The partnership will be ongoing,...

South by Southwest is known for launching smart studio films and buzzy independent movies. It all happens against a backdrop of tacos, beer, and keynote speeches from influential artists and world leaders. In 2019, SXSW might have had one of its best years ever. As the film festival’s director Janet Pierson said practically before every screening, the quality of the movies that screened in Austin was just so strong.
Here, Variety picks the 12 biggest winners from SXSW, from Jordan Peele’s latest film to Charlize Theron in “Long Shot.”
Olivia Wilde
Perhaps the biggest winner of South by Southwest was actress-turned-first-time-director Olivia Wilde, who received raves for her high school coming-of-age comedy “Booksmart.” And there was plenty of critical love for her entire ensemble, especially her two leading ladies, Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein. They play two straight-laced teen best friends who decide to need to cram in some reckless...

Seth Rogen is a big fan of “Roma,” the multi-hyphenate star admitted on a muggy Sunday morning at SXSW, but he doesn’t know how to make movies or do comedy for any other format than a packed movie theater.
The theatrical versus streaming debate was top of mind for Rogen, his “Long Shot” leading lady Charlize Theron and their director Jonathan Levine, who sat for Variety and the National Association of Theater Owners’ filmmakers panel at downtown Austin’s WeWork space.
“Personally, with our comedies, I think a theater is the best place to see them,” Rogen said, recalling formative experiences seeing “There’s Something About Mary” and the “South Park” movie at his local cineplex.
“There is an uproarious communal experience. You all feel like you’re partaking in something together. Last night was a good example of how powerful comedy can be in theaters,” said Rogen.

Seth Rogen’s rambunctious brand of self-deprecation tends to dictate the tone of the many raunchy studio comedies he’s appeared in over the last decade, but “Long Shot” finally provides a co-star who can match that dopey charm. In director Jonathan Levine’s frisky romantic comedy, Charlize Theron’s workaholic Secretary of State exudes power and intimidation with her every move, putting Rogen’s overbearing journalist-turned-speechwriter in his place even as they fall in love; in the process, she injects this formulaic movie with fresh bite.
A romcom fantasy that funnels aspects of “Notting Hill” and “Dave” through a raunchy filter, “Long Shot” turns its endearing couple into a savvy vessel for exploring America’s fractured times. As Rogen’s shaggy humor finds its match in Theron’s domineering energy, “Long Shot” is overlong and rough around the edges, but its imperfections speak to an endearing knack for the messiness of modern times.

Long before he was the man who wrote “Despacito” — one of the world’s most ubiquitous and all-time greatest hits — he was Luis Fonsi, the Spanish-language heartthrob with millennial pop charisma. The week Paul McCartney released his new album Egypt Station, his single “Come On to Me” reached roughly 1.5 million radio listeners thanks to the combined support of two formats, Adult Contemporary and Adult Album Alternative, plus major promotional endorsements from iHeartRadio, YouTube, Spotify and Amazon Music.
These were impressive numbers, but surprisingly, they were dwarfed by those of another veteran, the R&B singer Peabo Bryson. Without the benefit of any corporate-tech-behemoth support, the 67-year-old Bryson was quietly reaching more than 9 million listeners with his single “Love Like Yours and Mine.

Billboard continues to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its Hot 100 singles chart, this time by ranking the top 10 female artists of all time based on their chart achievements over the years. So who came out on top? Watch the video above for the whole list.
Covering four decades of music, Madonna took top honors as the biggest female artist in Billboard history. Over the course of her career she has accumulated 12 number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including iconic songs “Like a Virgin” (1984), “Like a Prayer” (1989), “Vogue” (1990) and “Music” (2000). She has also had eight number-one albums on the Billboard 200 albums chart, from “Like a Virgin” (1984) all the way to “Mdna” (2012).
Madonna overtook Mariah Carey for the top spot on Billboard’s list, which may be surprising given some of Carey’s historic chart achievements. She has had more number-one hits on the Hot 100 than any other solo artist (18), and she...

This is s–ty news. I have at least three and a half hours worth of filming to complete this scene. There’s a good chance I’m not going to make my day, and it feels like everything is riding on this moment. My future directing career?...

There aren’t many changes on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart dated April 7, but that’s good news for Drake as he’s able to cruise to a 10th straight week at number-one with “God’s Plan,” which debuted in the top spot back on February 3 and hasn’t budged since. It’s now tied as Drake’s longest-running number-one hit on the chart. He previously reigned for 10 weeks with “One Dance” featuring Wizkid and Kyla in 2016. Will he set a new record for himself?
“God’s Plan” is only the 36th song in the history of the Hot 100 to spend 10 weeks or more at number-one, and it’s only the fifth to spend all of its first 10 weeks in the top position. Previously “Hello” by Adele spent its first 10 weeks in first place. “I’ll Be Missing You” by Puff Daddy, Faith Evans and 112 spent its first 11 weeks there.
