Have you heard? Gooseworx beefs with YouTube, ‘Pubg’ gets creator network, and Steven He gets cast
Image
Each week, we handpick a selection of stories to give you a snapshot of trends, updates, business moves, and more from around the creator industry. This week, the creator of an animated smash hit is getting choosy about platforms while a man known for dispensing emotional damage is getting his close-up.

Creator commotion

The creator of The Amazing Digital Circus has thoughts about YouTube censorship. In a tweet, Gooseworx claimed that YouTube’s stringent guidelines are requiring some edits that aren’t necessary in the Netflix version of Tadc. Those issues are one reason why Gooseworx sought distribution from a major streaming service in the first place.

A YouTube guitarist shreds with metal masters. Mastodon invited Ben Eller to play with them at a festival in the Dominican Republic. Shredders like Eller have been tearing it up on YouTube for years, and Mastodon’s move is a tip-of-the-hat to that community.

Mikayla Noguiera’s product launch was huge. Her restock stunt was nearly as big.
Image
Creator product launches can be big business for both influencers and brands. But what happens next?

Mikayla Nogueira decided to answer that question with a unique stunt. The Massachusetts-bred beauty guru became e.l.f. Cosmetics‘ CEO for a single day to promote the restocking of her Mikayla Marriage Material Lip Duo product line.

Nogueira, her partners at agency Viral Nation, and e.l.f. first launched Marriage Material in June 2023, and it was sold out within minutes. The line takes its name from Nogueira’s own nuptials, as the Streamy Award winner wore the lip product she designed on her wedding day.

A fast-selling creator product is great news, but many of those products struggle to live up to their initial hype. Sometimes, the factors driving sales are beyond creators’ and brands’ control. In other cases, product lines that launched to much fanfare struggle to keep up with the hype.

Image
It feels a little strange to say this in August, but the 2023 Streamy Awards are officially over, and they handed out a grand total of 50 awards to this year’s top creators.

This was the first year Tubefilter and dick clark productions held Streamys in the summertime, but the change of season didn’t mean everything changed: For the fourth time in a row, MrBeast took home Creator of the Year, and for the second time in a row, Kai Cenat snagged Streamer of the Year.

As for Show of the Year, that went to Michelle Khare and her daredevil series Challenge Accepted.

This year’s ceremony was hosted by MatPat, and featured dozens of presenters, including Dylan Mulvaney, Ryan Trahan, The Try Guys‘ Keith Habersberger and Zach Kornfeld, Smosh‘s Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, TikTok Npc streamer Pinkydoll, Colin and Samir, Dream, Michelle Khare, Anna Sitar, Austin Creed,...

The 2023 Streamy Awards honored the best in content creation on social media and Dylan Mulvaney took the trophy for Breakout Creator.

Mulvaney went viral after receiving backlash from conservative media over promoting Bud Light.

“532 days ago, I made a coming-out video that turned into my ‘Days of Girlhood’ series, and my life has been changed for the better,” she continued. “But on the flip side, there’s also been an extreme amount of transphobia and hate, and I know that my community is feeling it.”
