Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

For casual moviegoers, there may only be a peripheral connection between the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category at the Oscars and the lead acting contenders on which that makeup is applied and whose hair is styled. For the longest time, this race was all about the special FX makeup, prosthetics and the like for genre films. The original 1968 “Planet of the Apes,” Rick Baker’s work on “An American Werewolf in London” in 1981, and the makeup effects for David Cronenberg’s “The Fly” are all examples of that.
In recent years, it has become more about making an actor look like the real-life person they’re playing. In fact, I wrote more about this very thing last year when “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “House of Gucci” were in the mix, although only the former helped actress Jessica Chastain on her way to winning her first Oscar. It’s happened five times in the last 11 years (including three years in a row) that an acting winner has has also carried along the hair/makeup team for triumphs at the Academy Awards, a trend that Brendan Fraser and the makeup/prosthetics team from “The Whale” (headed by Judy Chin) hope to continue this year. To be sure, the transformation of Fraser into a 600-pound man proved a visually stunning on-camera masterwork, and it would surprise few if the actor and the team in charge of his radically altered appearance were both to be honored with Oscar hardware.
Most recently, Jessica Chastain won the lead actress prize for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” at last year’s Oscars, while the makeup/hairstyling trophy went to that film’s Stephanie Ingram, Linda Dowds and Justin Raleigh for helping transform Chastain into Tammy Faye Bakker.

Oscar voters love to reward the makeup artists and hairstylists who transform some of Hollywood’s most famous faces into historical figures. Since the competitive category of Best Makeup and Hairstyling was introduced at the Academy Awards in 1982, eight films in which performers portray famous folks have won this Oscar. Adam McKay‘s “Vice,” a sly satire on the life and times of politician Dick Cheney, is poised to be the ninth to do so.
Over the two hour plus running time of “Vice,” Christian Bale portrays Cheney from his early years in Wyoming to his eight years as vice president. The actor gained 40 plus pounds and shaved his head to look like the man who was second in command during some of the darkest days in American history.
It is no surprise that Bale is tipped to take home his second Oscar. Also nominated are Amy Adams, who portrays...

Adam McKay’s “Vice” could well follow in the Oscar footsteps of Joe Wright’s “Darkest Hour.” Both biopics portray portly, balding man with supreme power and authority – Dick Cheney and Winston Churchill, respectively. Each showcases a transformative performance by a respected actor.
In “Darkest Hour,” Gary Oldman embodied the British statesman. He won Best Actor pretty much everywhere, including at the Academy Awards. In “Vice,” his “Dark Knight” co-star Christian Bale is the essence of the American vice president: a scarier figure altogether, like a looming great white shark. Unlike Oldman, Bale didn’t start off the awards season as the favorite in the Oscar race. However, his wins at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards have turned him into the Best Actor frontrunner.
Both actors credit their respective hair and make-up teams for transforming them into their characters. The legendary Kazuhiro Tsuji, who Oldman coaxed out of...

Luca Guadgnino‘s new film, “Suspiria,” is certainly a singular, unique directorial vision. This retelling of Dario Argento‘s 1977 horror classic tells the story of Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson), an American dancer accepted into an elite German dance company. Turns out the artistic director Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton) is not who she seems.
This dance company is, essentially, a front for a coven of witches. Basically, this is what “American Horror Story: Coven” would have been like if it had been less “Mean Girls” and more “Blair Witch Project.” This isn’t a straight-up horror, however. It’s more a of a psychological drama – one that slowly cranks up the tension through suspenseful dance set piece, weird, erratic imagery, and a terrific performance by the inimitable Swinton.
She takes on three roles: Helena Markos, the ‘mother’ of the coven; Madame Blanc, the artistic director of the dance academy; and the therapist Dr Josef Klemperer.

The 90th Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday night, March 4, hosted for the second year in a row by Jimmy Kimmel. The Emmy winning comedian and host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” impressed with his hosting duties in 2017, but that ceremony is probably best remembered for its twist ending: “La La Land” was announced as the winner for Best Picture, but minutes later it was revealed that the wrong winner had been announced and that “Moonlight” was the rightful victor. Was the 2018 Best Picture outcome just as shocking? Scroll down for our live updating report and analysis of the winners as they happened.
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was the front-runner for Best Picture going into Oscar night after winning top prizes at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and BAFTAs. But close behind was “The Shape of Water,” the winner at the Producers Guild, Directors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards.

It’s that time of year everyone! We here at the Age of the Nerd really love movies, if you couldn’t tell, and obviously want to be a part of any celebration of the form. What better way to do that than to predict the 90th Academy Awards!
Each Aotn writer has painstackingly researched, studied analytics, and cross referenced with national databases to get their predictions air tight…or we just kind of guessed based on how we’re feeling.
The winner? Fame, glory, and all that glitters (virtually anyway).
The loser? Well, they’ve gotta write this year’s Oscars recap article.
Let The Games Begin!
S. Christian Roe’s Predictions:
Note: I have reasons for picking these that I’ll illustrate below, but some categories don’t have a reason other than gut instinct.
Best Picture: The Shape of Water
The Shape of Water won both PGA and DGA awards already.

Gary Oldman was considered a likely Oscar front-runner for “Darkest Hour” almost as soon as the first production still was released of him disappearing into the role of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. And the prosthetic makeup that helped him disappear became an Oscar front-runner just as quickly. With Oscar night approaching that hasn’t changed, especially with the film’s victories at the Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTAs and Make Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick are the makeup and hair artists nominated for their work on the docudrama, and they’re the overwhelming favorites to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling with 1/10 odds.

At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Feb. 24, Oscar frontrunner “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. The makeup artists who transformed Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill for “Darkest Hour” won the top honor from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild at Saturday night’s Muahs Guild Awards. Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski, Lucy Sibbick won in the Feature Length Motion Picture – Best Special Make Up Effects category, the Muahs category that most closely corresponds to the Oscars Best Makeup and Hairstyling category. (The Oscars call it “makeup and hairstyling,” while the guild adds a hyphen and another word by going for “make-up and hair styling.”) Also Read: Gary Oldman, Joe Wright on 'the Icon and the Myth' of...

The Oscar 2018 trio of makeup and hair nominees are marked by memorable and effective transformations: Best Actor favorite Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour,” nine-year-old Auggie (Jacob Tremblay) suffering from a rare facial deformity in “Wonder,” and Judi Dench as withering Queen Victoria restored to joyful grace in “Victoria & Abdul.”
In all three instances, the sculpting and applications provided believable looks that never detracted from superb performances. Oldman and Dench don’t resemble Churchill and Victoria, yet their appearances captured the essence of these historical figures. And while Auggie’s Treacher Collins syndrome appeared less severe than in the best-selling novel by R.J. Palacio, the effects of the deformity were very realistic.
“Darkest Hour” remains the heavy favorite, of course, but “Wonder” (released this month on Blu-ray/DVD from Lionsgate) and “Victoria & Abdul” are worthy competitors, and all three are testaments to the power of the human face.

When makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji was first asked by Gary Oldman to work on “Darkest Hour” he was initially hesitant. “I was kind of retired from [the] film industry,” he reveals, and he knew that transforming the actor into former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill “would be difficult to pull off.” But it looks like he made the right decision. Tsuji snagged an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, one of six total bids the film received, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Oldman). Watch our exclusive video interview with Tsuji above.

Tsuji began by gathering photos of Churchill and Oldman to note the differences between the two. He also watched documentary footage of Churchill “to try to understand his mentality and what kind of person he was.” In studying their two faces, he found that “Gary is almost like a greyhound,...

“Darkest Hour” is as much of a lock to win the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar as it is to claim Best Actor. Those uncanny prosthetics to transform Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill didn’t create themselves, you know? If the film does take home Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Japanese makeup wizard Kazuhiro Tsuji, who was retired two years ago until Oldman came calling, would be the first Asian person to win the category.
A three-time nominee, Tsuji, who shares his nomination with David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick, is the only Asian makeup artist ever nominated in the category. He was previously up for “Click” (2006) and “Norbit” (2007), and won a BAFTA for “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000).

“Darkest Hour” is the overwhelming Oscar front-runner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling thanks in large part to the prosthetics used to transform lead actor Gary Oldman into British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This award has gone to a number of films that recreate historical figures over the years, but the motion picture academy has been especially fond of British icons.
Peter Frampton, Paul Pattison and Lois Burwell won for “Braveheart” (1995), about 13th century Scottish warrior William Wallace. But Wallace was actually fighting to free Scotland from English rule, so perhaps we should leave that one out. But just a few years later Jenny Shircore prevailed for “Elizabeth” (1998), which transformed Cate Blanchett into Queen Elizabeth I during the early years of her reign. And one year after that Christine Blundell and Trefor Proud prevailed for Mike Leigh‘s biopic “Topsy-Turvy” (1999), about the British operatic duo of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Gary Oldman
Winston Churchill, The Darkest Hour
It took more than three hours each day for Oldman to transform into the British prime minister for Joe Wright's World War II drama, according to Kazuhiro Tsuji, Oldman's prosthetics, makeup and hair designer: "I sculpted facial prosthetics consisting of the neck, cheeks, nose and chin. Gary also wore a very finely crafted wig that changed the actor's facial and head shape similar to the former British prime minister." The look was completed with makeup, applied by David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick.
