New Delhi, Aug 14 (Ians) Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan shared the new ball for India in all formats for many years. But their bonding goes even deeper as the senior pacer played an important role in the Odi and Test debuts of the junior bowler from Delhi.
Players have butterflies in their tummies just before making their international debut. Former India pacer Ishant Sharma was nervous and scared well before his debut match for he had to travel alone to join the team in Ireland for an Odi series on an Sos call-up as many players were sick and unavailable.
Ishant, who had played only a few Ranji Trophy matches till then and was selected for the subsequent Test series against England, was leaving Indian shores for the first time and had to travel alone to England and then to Ireland. And to compound his problems, he lost his luggage and kit bag in transit.

Pune, Aug 7 (Ians) Utkarsha Pawar, the Maharashtra cricketer who has been in the headlines due to her recent wedding to India men’s cricketer Ruturaj Gaikwad, has insisted that she will continue her quest to continue to improve as a cricketer and wear the India hat even after the marriage.
“I will continue to play cricket for as long as I wish and as long as my body allows me. One can be 200 per cent sure about it, not just 100 per cent,” Utkarsha said in a freewheeling chat with ‘Coffee, Cricket Aani Barach Kaahi’, a Marathi cricket podcast.
Ever since Utkarksha and Ruturaj, the Chennai Super Kings and Maharashtra opener who will lead India at the Asian Games in September-October, tied the knot in Pune on June 3, Utkarsha has been in the news for off-the-field reasons.

New Delhi, Aug 3 (Ians) Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that one major difference in the build-up of the 2023 Men’s Odi World Cup as compared to the preparation undertaken by the 2011 tournament-winning team, has been the significantly lesser time of playing matches as a cohesive unit.
After the end of 2007 Odi World Cup and before the start of the 2011 edition, India had played 118 ODIs. With the 2023 World Cup being just over two months away, India have played just 57 matches after the end of the 2019 edition in England. Moreover, India has played 42 ODIs since the start of 2021, with 44 players being tried out, highlighting that a settled combination hasn’t been achieved yet.

Port of Spain, July 23 (Ians) Former India left-arm fast-bowler Zaheer Khan believes Rohit Sharma & Co will have to aim for quick wickets on Day Four of the ongoing second Test to wrap West Indies first innings quickly.
In day three’s play at the Queen’s Park Oval, West Indies adopted a cautious approach and chose to toil hard, reaching 229 for five at stumps and still trailing India’s 1st innings total of 438 by 209 runs.
Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite was the top scorer for the West Indies, accumulating 75 runs off 235 balls, laced with five fours and a six. With the second new ball just 5.1 overs old, India aim to make inroads in an early start to day four’s play.
“They have been holding the West Indies to a decent total right now. Five wickets are down and it would have been lovely for India to finish the day with another wicket.

New Delhi, May 21 (Ians) Former West Indies opener Chris Gayle believes that Kkr batter Rinku Singh, who had a sensational Ipl 2023 season, will get a massive spike in his salary next year.
Lucknow Super Giants clinched their spot in the 2023 Ipl playoffs with a win in their final season game over the Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Lucknow took the crease to bat first and scored 176 runs, with Nicolas Pooran’s 58 runs being the highlight of the innings. Ipl 2023: All other teams in points table were waiting for Rcb to lose against Srh, says Zaheer Khan
Hyderabad, May 19 (Ians) After Royal Challengers Bangalore took another step forward in their fight to make the Ipl 2023 playoffs with a convincing eight-wicket win over the Sunrisers Hyderabad, former India pacer Zaheer Khan said that all other teams in the points table were waiting for Faf Du Plessis-led side to lose so there was pressure on Bengaluru based franchise.
Batting first, the Sunrisers set a solid target of 187 runs with Heinrich Klaasen leading the way with a spectacular 104-run outing. All of that was spoiled by an iconic ‘King Kohli’ performance as he scored his first century in this edition of the Ipl as Rcb moved to the 4th position in the points table.

After taking home the Emerging Player of the Tournament award, Malik made his T20I and Odi debut for India in the same year, impressing legends of the game with the chances he got. But in Ipl 2023, Malik has played only seven matches, picking five wickets at an economy rate of 10.35 and is yet to play this month.
Malik’s conspicuous absence from the playing eleven raised further eyebrows through the words of Hyderabad skipper Aiden Markram after the toss against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday.
"Not too sure to be honest. Certainly, he’s a player with the X-factor, bowls at 150kph, but I don’t really know what’s behind the scenes but he has a lot of X-factor," he said.

New Delhi, May 7 (Ians) Delhi Capitals put on a show to register a clinical seven-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in an Ipl 2023 match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here and former India pacer Rp Singh feels that the reason behind the home team’s win was their great intent.
Rcb won the toss and decided to bat first, scoring a total of 181 runs boosted by Virat Kohli’s 55 runs and Mahipal Lomror’s quickfire 54 runs. Unfortunately, that total was not enough as the Capitals chased it with ease on Saturday night.
Phillip Salt’s mega 87-run knock helped them not only chase the target down but do it with 20 balls to spare.

Mumbai, April 6 (Ians) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) expresses its profound grief at the sad demise of Sudhir Naik. The former India opener passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday.
Naik, 78, played three Tests and two ODIs for India. It was Naik, who hit the first four for India in ODIs in England in 1974 at Headingley, Leeds.
A Mumbai stalwart who donned different hats and carried out various responsibilities, Naik, famously led a depleted Mumbai to Ranji Trophy triumph in 1971 when the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Sardesai and Ashok Mankad were creating history in the Caribbean. He played 85 first-class games and scored 4376 runs, including a top score of 200 not out.
Post his playing days, Naik played an ever-bigger role in Mumbai. Managing the affairs of the National Cricket Club, he was instrumental in shaping and nurturing the careers of Zaheer Khan, Wasim Jaffer and Nilesh Kulkarni,...

Post his playing days, Naik played an ever-bigger role in Mumbai. Managing the affairs of the National Cricket Club, he was instrumental in shaping and nurturing the careers of Zaheer Khan, Wasim Jaffer and Nilesh Kulkarni,...

Mumbai, April 5 (Ians) Former Mumbai great and India cricketer Sudhir Naik passed away at a City hospital here on Wednesday evening due to complications arising from a fall he suffered a few days back at his residence. He was 78.
Naik was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Hinduja Hospital here after suffering a fall at his home on March 24. He has been in the hospital since then.
A courageous right-hand opening batsman, Sudhir Naik played three Tests and two One-Day Internationals for India in 1974. But he served Mumbai cricket for a longer period, leading a depleted side to an unexpected Ranji Trophy title in 1970-71.
After retirement, Naik became quite a successful coach at his own National Cricket Club, shaping the careers of players like Zaheer Khan, Wasim Jaffer, Rajesh Pawar and Paras Mhambrey. For many years, Naik was the chief curator of the Wankhede Stadium and...

Wellington, Nov 17 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels there should be no harm in India looking at the prospect of appointing a T20I captain in order to change their fortunes in playing the shortest format of the game.
Currently, Rohit Sharma is the Indian skipper across all formats. But India are being led by Hardik Pandya for the T20I series against New Zealand while Shikhar Dhawan will take over as the skipper in the Odi series against the Blackcaps as selectors decided to rest Rohit and other senior players after the end of T20 World Cup.
Pandya had first captained India in a 2-0 away series victory over Ireland June this year, after he led Gujarat Titans to Ipl 2022 title in their first appearance of the tournament. He also led India in the fifth T20I against the West Indies at Lauderhill, USA, in August, where...

Wellington, Nov 17 (Ians) In the last few years, England have transformed themselves from playing in an outdated style to becoming the dominant leaders of white-ball cricket in men’s international cricket.
That dominance was further asserted when England won the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia on November 13 at the McG and became the first men’s team to hold 20-over and 50-over World Cup trophies at the same time.
England’s template of white-ball domination is something which former India head coach Ravi Shastri wants the side to follow and use their rich talent pool as road for 2024 T20 World Cup begins with a Hardik Pandya-led side taking on New Zealand in a three-match T20I series starting from Friday at Wellington.

The 32-year old recently parted ways with his state side Jharkhand and will play for Baroda in the upcoming 2022-23 season of domestic cricket.
The Indian cricket team currently has a plethora of options in the fast bowling department and have serious competition. Pune, March 23 (Ians) India's decision to hand out debuts to two new players once again paid rich dividends on Tuesday with all-rounder Krunal Pandya returning with a half-century and seamer M. Prasidh Krishna shining with the ball, in the first Odi against England here on Tuesday.
Pandya's blitzkrieg with the willow that caught the English bowlers by surprise at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium came after India saw stellar performances by some other debutants over the past few months.

Chennai, Feb 18 (Ians) The Indian Premier League (Ipl) mini-auction on Thursday provided a few ageing Indian cricketers, discarded by Chennai Super Kings (Csk) recently, a fresh lease of life and a few crores to boot.
Former India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 2.4 crore, an amount which was close to five times his base price. Chennai, Feb 8 (Ians) Ishant Sharma on Monday became only the third Indian fast bowler to scalp 300 wickets in Test cricket. He achieved the feat on Day Four of the first Test here at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium when he got the wicket of England's Daniel Lawrence in their second innings. Lawrence scored 18 runs off the 47 deliveries he faced before he got out lbw against Ishant.
Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan are the other Indian fast bowlers to reach 300-wicket milestone in the longest format of the game.
Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh are the other Indian bowlers to scalp 300 or more wickets in Test cricket.
Ishant, however, is the slowest Indian bowler to scalp 300 wickets. He reached the milestone in 98 Test matches, whereas Ashwin -- having scalped 300 wickets in 54 Tests -- is the fastest. Ashwin is followed by Kumble (66), Harbhajan (72), Kapil Dev (83) and Zaheer (89).

New Delhi, Jan 13 (Ians) Australia coach Justin Langer's suggestion on Wednesday that the 2020 Indian Premier League (Ipl) held just before the big-ticket India-Australia series may have been responsible for the soft tissue injuries to players, may be true more for the Indians than the Aussies.
This is the first time an Indian team touring overseas immediately after the Ipl has suffered so many injuries since the 2011 Ipl when quite a few players -- Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag -- were laid low before the tour of England that immediately followed the T20 league.
But even in 2011, India's pace bowling attack wasn't completely wiped off the team sheet as is the case this time. While speedsters Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma didn't make it to Australia as they succumbed to injuries during the Ipl, fast bowler Umesh Yadav suffered a calf strain in the second Test...

Melbourne, Dec 30 (Ians) Australian speedster Pat Cummins having the upper hand over Indian batting mainstay Cheteshwar Pujara is an area of concern for India but it is also symptomatic of batsmen finding it difficult to score runs throughout the series, former fast bowler Zaheer Khan has said.
Pujara, who scored 521 runs at an average of 74.42 on India's previous tour of Australia in 2018, has been dismissed three out of four times by Cummins in the first two Tests of the four-match series. The batsman is yet to score a half-century.
"There is no doubt that it is a topic of concern. But it is similar to the way we were talking about Steve Smith, that he will get the feel, he said he found his grip in the one-dayers," said Zaheer on Sony Sports Network.

Adelaide, Dec 19 (Ians) Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar refused to blame the India batsmen for getting all out for 36 saying that Australia's bowling was just too good.
India were dismissed for 36, their lowest total in Test history. Their previous lowest was 42 at Lord's in England, back in 1974.
"It's not fair to blame the Indian batsmen for the way they got out because it was just simply superb bowling by the Australian bowlers," said Sunil Gavaskar on Channel 7.
The former India captain was part of the India team that was shot out for 42 by England at Lord's over 46 years ago.
"The lowest ever score since they started playing Test cricket... it is never good to see. But having said that most other teams, if they had been facing that kind of bowling, they would have also got into trouble. Maybe not all out for 36, may be all out for 72, 80, 90. But...

Adelaide, Dec 19 (Ians) Australian pace bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins reached personal milestones as they completed 200 and 150 Test wickets, respectively, in the first session of the third day's play on Saturday morning as the hosts restricted India to 36 for nine in their second innings.
Mohammed Shami, the No. 11, could not bat as India fell to their lowest-ever total in Test history.
Hazlewood, who took five for eight, got rid of R. Ashwin to reach 200 wickets while Cummins, who finished with four for 21, got the wicket of skipper Virat Kohli as his 150th Test wicket. Hazlewood became the 18th Australian to get to 200 wickets.
"It is good fun. We are obviously good mates, played a lot of good cricket together... they have milestones too in sight," said Hazlewood for Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon, who went wicketless on the day. Starc has 248 wickets and Lyon has 391.

New Delhi, Nov 14 (Ians) Yuvraj Singh has admitted that the he was so overawed by shaking hands with Sachin Tendulkar for the first time, in 2000, that he excitedly rubbed them all over his body.
Tendulkar was the senior pro and already the world's best batsman when Yuvraj Singh made his debut for India in 2000.
"I was a backbencher in my class, I was a backbencher in the bus. The moment he came in, he came and shook hands with me, Zaheer Khan, Vijay Dahiya, the new guys. I remember when he turned back and went back to his seat, I rubbed my hand all over my body. I just didn't want to take a shower because I shook hands with Tendulkar," Yuvraj said in a video on Netflix titled 'Stories Behind the Story'.

New Delhi, Nov 5 (Ians) SunRisers Hyderabad pacer Sandeep Sharma's ability to move the new ball has ensured that almost half of his 108 wickets have come in the powerplay in the Indian Premier league (Ipl). The right-armer has scalped Virat Kohli seven times in the Ipl history, a joint record. Not surprisingly, four of those Kohli dismissals have been in powerplay overs.
"The great thing about Sandeep's bowling that I have noticed since his early days is his good wrist position and his ability to swing the ball both ways. That makes it possible for him to trouble the batsmen, and that plays on their minds," said Munish Bali, Sharma's mentor and head coach of Punjab Ranji Trophy team.
Bali was also the assistant coach to Dav Whatmore when India won the 2008 under-19 World Cup, which the Kohli-led Indian team won.

Abu Dhabi, Oct 16 (Ians) The variety that Mumbai Indians' (Mi) bowling attack possess is something that the team had worked towards at the start of the season and is keeping them going this season, according to the team's Director of Cricket Zaheer Khan.
"The variety in style keeps us going," said Zaheer during their match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here. "Our bowlers can explore different conditions very well which is something we made a conscious effort towards going into the season. Different kind of bowlers add to what we have been trying to achieve together."
Mi's bowling prowess was on full display on Friday as they dismantled the Kkr top half within the first 11 overs for just 61 runs. Fast bowlers Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, and Nathan Coulter-Nile all took a wicket each while spinner Rahul Chahar took two off consecutive balls.
