On an otherwise uneventful Friday evening, about 95 million people watched a white Ford Bronco slowly driving down the 5 freeway.
The driver of the car, of course, was O.J. Simpson, the NFL star turned actor and TV broadcaster, and that day he officially was named as a murder suspect in the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
America was glued to their TV sets, with the broadcast networks breaking into their regular programing, and the lone cable news channel CNN having its star host Larry King guide viewers through the action (watch it here).
The chase and subsequent trial (“The Trial of the Century,” as declared by multiple news outlets), with its live cameras in the courtroom, became gripping must-see TV. The not-guilty verdict — handed down at 10 a.m. on a weekday — was watched live by more than 150 million people (on day one of the 1991 Gulf War,...

Will Ronna McDaniel land another TV gig? There is already interest in the former Republican National Committee chair brewing from a couple of cable news outlets.
Sources at both Newsmax and NewsNation tell The Hollywood Reporter that they would be interested in pursuing a deal with McDaniel, should she ultimately finalize a separation agreement with NBC News.
McDaniel has been seeking a lawyer to negotiate an exit from NBC, which announced her hire as an NBC News contributor last Friday and reversed course just a few days later after facing backlash from MSNBC stars like Rachel Maddow and the Morning Joe team, not to mention an on-air rebuke from Chuck Todd on Meet the Press just minutes after McDaniel’s debut appearance.
McDaniel is likely to receive a hefty payout from NBC, given her two-year, $300,000 per year deal, though sometimes negotiations result in a lower payout in exchange for a shorter noncompete.

Tucker Carlson’s former top producer at Fox News is being accused of sexually assaulting a former employee when they both worked at the network 15 years ago.

Tucker Carlson’s longtime executive producer at Fox News was sued on Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting another Fox employee in 2008.
Justin Wells was a producer of “On the Record” with Greta Van Susteren at the time of the alleged assault. The accuser, Andrew Delancey, alleges that Wells lured him to his apartment in New York, and then pushed him onto a bed and forcibly grabbed his genitals.
“Defendant Wells quickly began unbuttoning and trying to rip off Mr. Delancey’s jeans as the sexual assault progressed,” the lawsuit states. “Mr. Delancey was in complete shock. He yelled out, ‘no!’ and mustered up the strength to physically slow down Defendant Wells’s physical attack.”
At the time, Delancey was a producer for Fox News Edge, which provides content to local Fox affiliates. According to the suit, Wells had higher status at the network, and had told Delancey that he would help him “learn the ropes.

A former Fox News employee claims in a new civil lawsuit that Tucker Carlson’s top producer Justin Wells sexually assaulted him in 2008.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court on Monday and cited New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which gave a one-year window for plaintiffs to file civil sexual abuse claims regardless of the statute of limitations.
Andrew Delancey, former regional producer for affiliate service Fox News Edge, claimed that in 2007, Wells contacted him on Facebook through a Fox employee Facebook group. At the time, Delancey was working at Fox 13 in Tampa Bay, and Wells was a producer at Fox 5 in New York. The next year, Wells encouraged Delancey to move to New York, and Delancey sent him his resume, according to the lawsuit. He eventually landed a job as a producer at the Fox News Edge team, and started in September, 2008.

The conservative news streaming service is off to the races, showing off an impressive subscriber total for its first 30 days.
It’s hard to underestimate the importance of live news, even as cord-cutting continues to impact the TV-watching audience. One survey from September found that all age groups used their broadcast TV channels to watch news more than any other type of programming.
The conservative news streaming service Newsmax+ launched at the beginning of November. At the end of that month, the service had already accrued 150,000 subscribers. The figure is impressive for a streamer with a niche audience and a narrow selection of content. How is Newsmax+ Doing?
When Newsmax+ first launched earlier this month, it was undoubtedly a gamble for Newsmax. After all, the channel’s content had been streaming on a free ad-supported TV (Fast) channel on platforms like Roku and YouTube, so it was no guarantee that...

The hard-right news channel now has its own subscription streaming platform, with prices starting at $4.99 per month.
The removal of Newsmax from Directv earlier this year drew sharp protests from ultra-conservative viewers of the channel, who were quick to cry censorship at its withdrawal. Directv insisted there was no political motivation behind the removal, and eventually a new carriage deal brought the channel back to airwaves for Directv customers.
Carriage disputes are only becoming more common as cable and satellite lose customers, however. To help allay audience anxiety that the channel may be pulled from other providers in the future, Newsmax has launched its own direct-to-consumer (Dtc) service, imaginatively named Newsmax+, which is available now.

Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. continued his right-wing media tour on Wednesday with an appearance on Newsmax, during which he claimed that the Chinese government is developing race-based biological weapons.
“We know that the Chinese are developing ethnic bio-weapons. Bio-weapons that are designed to attack people of certain racial types. And we’re doing the same thing. We’ve been collecting Chinese DNA. We’ve been collecting Russian DNA specifically for that. [This] arms race is a catastrophe,” Kennedy told host Greta Van Susteren. The presidential hopeful provided no evidence to substantiate his claim.

After Tucker, a deluge of speculation.
Fox News Channel is considering “multiple scenarios” for its primetime lineup after the ouster of Tucker Carlson, with the network declining to comment on a recent report that veteran Sean Hannity might move into its primetime lead-off hour at 8 p.m.
“No decision has been made on a new primetime line-up and there are multiple scenarios under consideration,” Fox News said in a statement Wednesday. Since Carlson was ousted in late April, Fox News has filled his hour with “Fox News Tonight,” an opinion show that relies on a rotating array of hosts. Lawrence Jones, Brian Kilmeade and Kayleigh McEnany are among those who have filled the seat for a week.
Fox News issued the comment in the wake of The Drudge Report posting a plan it said could be underway: moving Sean Hannity to 8 p.m.; switching Jesse Watters, who has fared well at 7 p.

On his Fox News program, Tucker Carlson would often declare himself “the sworn enemy of lying, pomposity, smugness and group think.” So now he wants to launch a show on Twitter?
The social-media platform has given millions of people the ability to express themselves and communicate in ways they never could before, but it has also become a haven for bullying, tribalism and disinformation. Carlson may become part of the venue’s latest effort to keep traffic flowing even as many advertisers keep more than an arm’s length away.
Figuring out how to handle Carlson could be one of the first challenges for Linda Yaccarino, who has been named Twitter’s new CEO. The former NBCUniversal ad-sales chief knows what it takes to line up blue-chip sponsorships at scale. But doing that on behalf of Carlson may be a mission impossible. His Fox News show suffered from a dearth of mainstream national advertisers,...

Fox News viewership in the 8 pm hour is thus far down at least 50% since Tucker Carlson’s ouster was announced on Monday and his eponymous primetime hour was in turn replaced with Fox News Tonight.
What turned out to be the series finale of Tucker Carlson Tonight last Friday drew 2.7 million viewers, whereas Fox News Tonight — which this week has been hosted by Brian Kilmeade — at last count drew 1.33 million viewers.

When Fox News anchor Brian Kilmeade signed on Monday night to fill in for the defunct “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” some combination of curiosity, lead-in and brand strength kept the network’s total viewers numbers in a dead heat with Carlson’s last show the Friday before.
But boy, what a difference a couple of days makes: While the 8 p.m. hour got 2.59 million total viewers on average on Monday, viewership dropped to 1.7 million viewers on Tuesday, and slid further to 1.33 million total viewers on Wednesday, falling just behind MSNBC in that time-slot, according to Nielsen live plus same-day figures.
Trend-wise, it’s ugly: That’s a 34% Monday-to-Tuesday drop, with another 22% slide from Tuesday’s numbers on Wednesday night. Comparing Monday to Wednesday, average total viewership evaporated by half.
It’s not hugely surprising, and certainly not a disaster for Fox News, which on its worst of nights is still the most-watched network in cable news.

Like many other TV anchors at business-news outlet CNBC, Shepard Smith finds himself facing a closing bell.
The veteran journalist, who arrived at the NBCUniversal venue in the fall of 2020 with a mission to grow the network’s audience in early evening with a non-partisan general-news program, will leave CNBC as it focuses more intently on its core product: information tailored for viewers interested in the markets and personal finance.
Smith’s last show will air later in November, and CNBC intends to replace his program, “The News with Shepard Smith,” with an evening hour devoted to business news in early 2023. The anchors for that program will be named at a later date, and it remains to be seen whether CNBC will select candidates from among its current roster or seek to woon someone from outside its ranks.

Tributes have been paid to Larry King, the legend of American television and radio, who died Saturday just weeks after being hospitalized with coronavirus. He was 87.
CNN President Jeff Zucker led respects to King, a towering figure in U.S. journalism following a six-decade career in which he interviewed the world’s most important and famous people. King put CNN on the map with his show Larry King Live, and Zucker said the news network was proud to have him as part of its history.

King put CNN on the map with his show Larry King Live, and Zucker said the news network was proud to have him as part of its history.
“The scrappy young man from Brooklyn had a history-making career spanning radio and television. His curiosity about the world propelled his award-winning career in broadcasting, but it was his generosity of spirit that drew the world to him,” Zucker said.

Maria Bartiromo will be among the Fox News Channel personnel taking a crack at leading “Fox News Primetime,” the cable-news outlet’s new opinion hour at 7 p.m.
Bartiromo, contributors Katie Pavlich, Rachel Campos-Duffy and former U.S. Representative Trey Gowdy, and frequent guest Mark Steyn are among those who will rotate as anchors on the program. Fox News launched an overhauled daytime lineup today that placed the former 7 p.m. anchor, Martha MacCallum, in the afternoons, and reserved the hour instead for an additional hour of opinion-based programming. Brian Kilmeade, the “Fox & Friends” co-host, kicks off the show today and will be followed by the other hosts, a spokesperson for the network confirmed Monday.
The Los Angeles Times previously reported the hosts who will rotate each week in the new program. There was no immediate indication that any of the hosts taking part in the 7 p.m. rotation had...

NBCUniversal tried to harness two Fox News anchors in the recent past and failed. Now the company no doubt hopes the third time’s the charm.
The company’s CNBC on Wednesday evening launched former Fox News daytime anchor Shepard Smith in a new 7 p.m. news hour that, as Smith himself described it, aims to give viewers “journalists and experts, not opinions and pundits.” The business-news network clearly has some ambition for the new program. It hired a well-known producer, Molly Kordares, from “CBS Evening News,” lured Sally Ramirez, a top news executive from a major-market CBS affiliate in Houston, and assigned one of its veterans, Sandy Cannold, to oversee the project.
Several Fox News personalities who have left that outlet have gained new recognition for their newsgathering or anchoring skills, including Major Garrett and Catherine Herridge at CBS News and Alisyn Camerota at CNN. But NBC News has...

Trump’s choice to lead the U.S. Agency for Global Media, Michael Pack, was confirmed by the Senate earlier this month. In a note to staff on Monday morning, Bennett said that Pack has the right to replace them with his own Voa leadership.

Greta Van Susteren’s husband defended her on Tuesday by calling her former MSNBC colleagues “whores” in a tweet.
Van Susteren initially shared ratings from her short-lived show in response to a Daily Beast article about MSNBC’s future that referenced her six-month stint there. The Daily Beast article said that MSNBC brass has been eyeing former Fox News anchor Shep Smith for a role, similar to how the network took Van Susteren when she herself absconded from Fox News in 2017. A representative for MSNBC had no comment on the report.

Just 24 hours after trading barbs on live television, Meghan McCain and Whoopi Goldberg returned to The View on Tuesday with remarkably less combative dispositions.
But first, a refresher: On Monday’s episode, Goldberg became so annoyed by McCain consistently talking over her fellow co-hosts that she finally lashed out. “Girl, please stop talking,” Goldberg said to McCain, who replied, “No problem. I won’t talk the rest of the show.” Goldberg then said, “I’m okay with that. I’m okay with that. If you are going to behave like this.” After attempting (and failing) to proceed to the next topic,...

Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox News anchor who sued the late Roger Ailes and accused him of sexual harassment, says victim-blaming always follows whistleblowing and uses “the same myths as domestic violence.”
Carlson appeared on Sophia Bush’s “Work in Progress” podcast on Tuesday, where she discussed the cultural reaction to women’s whistleblowing and her new initiative, “Lift Our Voices,” which pushes for the end of non-disclosure agreements that prevent employees from discussing sexual harassment and assault.

To which Carlson continued, “‘Why did you stay?’ They’re all the same myths as domestic violence.

The working title for “Bombshell” was “Fair and Balanced,” and it still feels as though that would be the better option. Jay Roach’s compelling but uneven takedown of former Fox News and Fox Television Stations czar Roger Ailes is less a fiery expression of political outrage than a work of entertainment aiming to be all things to all people.
The movie is introduced as “a dramatization inspired by actual events,” a blend of freely imagined fiction and carefully recreated reality.

In August, Gray will launch Full Court Press-Overtime across multiple digital platforms. The website and Ott app will feature extended interviews, live streaming and user interaction, as well as links to additional related news content.

The program, “Full Court Press with Greta Van Susteren,” will air weekly beginning in September on Gray’s 93 stations plus additional markets in Chicago and Milwaukee. The new show will reach 28% of the local news market in the U.S.
“We believe viewers will embrace Ms. Van Susteren’s firm but tough approach with elected and other leaders to bolster the trusted, quality news our viewers already depend upon,” Gray chairman and CEO Hilton Howell Jr. said in a statement. “Our goal is to provide critical information without bias to allow viewers to form their own opinions and reach their own decisions by exploring all sides of a complex issue.”

Suzanne Scott sits atop the most watched operation in cable news, and easily the most controversial. She has managed to keep out of the spotlight during her long run at Fox News — viewers certainly know who Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson are, but not her. Yet her anonymity may no longer be possible.
Since ascending to CEO of the unit that manages Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network 11 months ago, Scott, 53, has presided over an organization that continues to be enveloped by a cyclone of criticism from detractors, who think Fox News functions as a propaganda machine for President Trump and his White House.
But Scott, like her late boss, Roger Ailes, who was forced out in 2016 amid a flood of sexual harassment allegations, is unapologetic about the channel’s primetime lineup of contentious right-wing hosts as she attempts to turn the page on an era of scandal and turmoil.

TV-news veteran Greta Van Susteren has joined Gray Television as a national political analyst who will provide news operations at the company’s TV stations with coverage of national and international political news.
“After more than 20 years on cable news platforms, I am thrilled to move to broadcast news and especially excited to join Gray Television’s journalists all across the country,” said Greta Van Susteren, in a statement. She is one of a handful of TV journalists who have worked for all three major U.S. cable-news operations, having logged significant time at both CNN and Fox News Channel as well as a brief stint in the early evenings at MSNBC.
Gray hires Van Susteren after it recently completed its acquisition of Raycom Media for $3.6 billion, a deal that puts the company in 91 TV markets with 150 affiliates of CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox.

The New York Times published and then swiftly deleted a tweet Thursday which chose to comment prominently on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s dress on the day she was elected to serve another term as the country’s third most powerful politician.
“We’ve deleted an earlier tweet to this article that was poorly framed,” the account for New York Times politics said in a terse update.
The original tweet wasn’t up for very long but was captured by the site’s all-knowing “screenshot bot,” which catalogs deleted tweets from prominent Twitter accounts. The bot also showed that the paper tried to delete a second attempt at the story.

“Nancy Pelosi, wearing a hot pink dress, ascended to the marble dais in the center of the House chamber to accept the wooden gavel,” the original tweet read.

The Twitter account for Disney Careers was briefly taken over Sunday by an Elon Musk impersonator who changed the account’s avatar and name to the tech billionaire and began posting Musk-like content to more than 167,000 people.
“I’m giving away 10,000 Btc to the Tesla community,” blared one post. “I’m leaving the post of director of Tesla due to the recent decision of the SEC. All users can take part in the giveaway. Thank you for your support.”
Another post contained no words but was just a collection of various memes and an image of Michael Douglas speaking on a very large cell phone from “Wall Street.”

The possible hacking was first brought to wide attention by journalist Yashar Ali. The @DisneyCareers handle was clearly visible throughout the episode.

The hosts at MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” regularly do battle with all sorts of A.M. competition. On Thursday, however, co-anchor Mika Brzezinski found herself sparring with a range of rival newscasters in a most unusual way.
Brzezinski held forth on Thursday’s “Morning Joe” with an impassioned oration about White House adviser Kellyanne Conway’s recent disclosure about being a victim of sexual assault. But she drew some equally fervent responses from other TV-news anchors.
Greta Van Susteren, S.E. Cupp and Chris Cuomo all questioned Brzezinski’s decision to press Conway to reveal more details of being a victim of sexual assault, which Conway noted during an appearance this past weekend on CNN’s “State of the Union,” a political affairs program that runs Sundays and is hosted by anchor Jake Tapper. “So tell us your story. Who is your attacker? Who broke the law? Who hurt you?” Brzezinski...

Fox News contributor Tomi Lahren is drawing online heat for a Friday zinger at Sen. John McCain on the day he announced he was suspending brain cancer treatments.
Speaking at an Arizona rally for Republican Senate candidate Kelli Ward, Lahren referred to McCain as a Rino (Republican In Name Only), a slight that indicates less-than-conservative positions on certain key issues.
Addressing Ward supporters, Lahren reportedly said, “We can’t put up another Rino like McCain and Flake,” the latter referring to Arizona’s other Senator, Jeff Flake.
Lahren was slammed by some social media posters for her comment about McCain on the day he indicated he was giving up the fight for life.
Y’all are sick. @SenJohnMcCain is dying. On a day where the man’s family @cindymccain @MeghanMcCain announced he is declining further cancer treatment, @kelliwardaz doesn’t even have the decency to respect that. Yes, You are a deplorable.
