John Powell(VII)
One of the greatest discus throwers of all time, John Powell broke the
world record in 1975 with a throw of 226' 8". Known as a technical
mastermind and regarded for his amazing work ethic, Powell served as a
police officer in San Jose, California where he also trained. Powell
lived with shot putter Brian "Crazy Horse" Oldfield (The Big O) for a
period of time during the 1970s. During this time, Powell and Oldfield
held the world records in their respective throwing events. Powell
later went on to compete in multiple Olympic Games, achieving Bronze
medals in both 1976 and 1984. He set his personal record throw of 233'
9" in 1984. He is now the CEO of his own company and has produced a few
excellent training tapes with Oldfield and other world class throwers.
He also runs an annual throwing camp to help youngsters learn and
perfect their throwing skills.
