The failure of France’s The Taste of Things to secure an Oscar nomination for best international film this year has discomfited the French film industry as it marks the fourth year a French film has not made the final five.
Talk is now already turning to whether this could mean further change on the horizon for its selection committee.
Justine Triet’s Anatomy Of A Fall, the film the committee opted not to select, secured five major nominations, for best picture, best director, best actress, best original screenplay and best film editing.

After keeping a fairly low profile as president of France’s leading commercial network TF1 Group for seven years, Gilles Pelisson, the discreet Harvard-educated executive, is ready for showtime. He has been propelled into the spotlight to promote French film and TV in his new role as president of Unifrance, succeeding Serge Toubiana last summer.
While participating in his first big gig for Unifrance at the Rendez-Vous showcase in Paris (which wraps Tuesday), Pelisson showed he had enough swagger to mingle with French stars and industry professionals alike, as well as deliver speeches about the prospects for French movies and TV series with both authority and conviction.
In the space of one week during the Rendez-Vous, he handed out the French Film Award to “By the Grace of God” actor Melvil Poupaud, and presented Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan with the best international co-production prize at the Lumiere Award on Monday.

Following a fully online 2021 event, a hybrid 2022 and last year’s 2023 comeback edition that saw most European distributors still struggling to stay afloat in a barely post-pandemic world, this year’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris was a “typical” market. And in 2024, typical is great.
“We haven’t had a typical market in four years. Everyone was back,” enthused Gilles Renouard, head of cinema for Rendez-Vous organiser Unifrance.
“Buyers are definitely more future-oriented,” he continued. “Last year, they were scared to buy films for theatrical release, but now they are confident in films that can work in their territories...

A week after being appointed culture minister and slammed by an avalanche of criticism, famed politician Rachida Dati has officially entered the ring.
Dati went off-script and delivered an unfiltered speech — starting with “I’m not asking you to love me, what I want is to convince you” — to a room full of film and TV players on Thursday evening during a ceremony honoring actor Melvil Poupaud, who received the French Cinema Award.
While on stage, Dati said she will strive to democratize culture during her tenure.
“Culture in schools and civic sense go hand-in-hand. When you look at schools in certain areas which are ridden with problems, you’ll notice that it’s often places where culture has taken a backseat,” she said. Dati also spoke about her own relationship with culture, admitting she saw a movie in a cinema for the first time at the age of 21 but...

France has submitted The Taste of Things as its candidate for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards, in a major upset after Justine Triet’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner and hot favorite Anatomy of a Fall was shut out.
The period drama The Taste of Things revolves around a culinary love affair between a dutiful cook and her gourmet employee, played by Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel, respectively.
Vietnam-born French director Tran Anh Hung broke out internationally with debut film The Scent of Green Papaya. The drama was Vietnam’s entry to the then Foreign Language category at the 1994 Oscars and was nominated.
The Taste of Things world premiered in Competition at Cannes, where it was titled The Pot-Au-Feu. Anh Hung won Best Director at the fest. Sapan Studios and IFC Films hold U.S. rights.

In a surprising twist of events, France’s Oscar committee has chosen the culinary romance “The Taste of Things” over “Anatomy of a Fall,” Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winning film, to represent the country in the international feature film race.
“The Taste of Things” (previously titled “The Pot-au-Feu”) won best director at Cannes for French-Vietnamese filmmaker Trần Anh Hùng. Starring Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel, the period movie was bought by IFC Films and Sapan Studios.
“Anatomy of a Fall,” meanwhile, was acquired by Neon, the Oscar-maker behind “Parasite,” at Cannes. The movie has been thriving at the French box office with approximately 8 million euros grossed from nearly 1 million admissions. It’s one of the biggest B.O. scores for a Palme d’Or winning film in France in years.

France’s TV sales market hit record levels thanks to deals such as ABC’s remake of crime drama High Intellectual Potential, as the U.S. became the biggest buyer of content from the European country.
Annual stats from the Cnc (National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image) and Unifrance released this afternoon show sales of French TV programs reached a record €214.8M ($232M) in 2022, an increase of 15.4% year-on-year and 4.7% higher than in 2017, the previous record year. U.S. sales made up nearly €20M of the total.
However, drops in pre-sales and co-production business led to an overall 15% fall in French TV exports. Pre-sales were down 50.3% and co-productions dipped 38.4% dip against a record 2021. This means the overall figure was €319.6M, down from €375.9M last year.

Former Lionsgate film co-chief Patrick Wachsberger has been named as one of the members of the selection committee that will decide the French entry for the Best International Film Oscar category this year.
He will be joined by international sales veterans Sabine Chemaly and Tanja Meissner, producer Charles Gillibert, directors Mounia Meddour and Olivier Assayas and composer Alexandre Desplat.
France has overhauled the composition of its Oscar entry selection committee twice in recent years to include more film industry professionals in a bid to improve its chances in the Best International Picture race.

Ladj Ly’s 2019 Cannes Jury Prize winner Les Misérables was the last French film to make it through to the final nomination stage for the 2020 awards, while Alice Diop’s Saint Omer made it onto the long list for the 2023 edition.

Rodolphe Belmer, the former CEO of Canal+ Group, who recently took the helm of France’s leading commercial channel TF1, said the company looks to forge deeper ties with streaming services, including Netflix, to team on premium content.
Belmer, who was part of Netflix’s administration board from 2018 to 2022, explained TF1 is facing a dearth of U.S. content available for its primetime slots. “U.S. series are less and less available because of the vertical integration of big U.S. production companies and networks, so we have to replace the bulk of these programs,” said Belmer, who recently succeeded to Gilles Pelisson as CEO and chairman of TF1.
The French executive pointed out these U.S. shows are not easy to replace because they pulled some of the highest ratings on primetime TF1 and were “very profitable because the costs to acquire them were largely below the advertising revenues they generated.

Rodolphe Belmer has made the case for TF1 Group as “the free entertainment reference for French citizens on TV and in streaming.”
Talking during a Lille Dialogue keynote session here at Series Mania, the TF1 CEO said the growth of streaming services, especially Netflix, meant linear networks such as his group needed to double down on their cultural strengths to reach viewers.
Several times he referenced the need to create content based around “heroes” and cultural figures, adding: “The editorial line is to promote French popular culture.”
Belmer, a Netflix board member, provided an analysis of the TV and streaming market during his talk. He claimed international SVOD service Netflix remained firmly established in the subscription market as rivals such have pivoted back towards major franchises and owned IP to offset streaming losses.

Salto, the French streaming service co-owned by TF1, M6 and France Télévisions, could either change hands or shut down in the near future, Variety has confirmed.
The service, which launched in 2020 after multiple delays, was created by the three French TV groups in an effort to give subscribers a local alternative to Netflix (which now has over 13 million subscribers in France) and other global services.
Priced at €6.99 (7.23) per month, Salto had only 523,000 subscribers as of June 2021 and ranked behind other local streamers, including Canal+, Ocs, beIN and Rmc by the end of last year, according to a study conducted by Npa Conseils/Harris interactive. With an annual revenue of €17.1 million in 2021, the company was valued at €45 million as of March.
The service features catch-up content from 19 different channels belonging to TF1, France Télévisions and M6, as well as premieres of upcoming shows, and fresh content available for streaming.

France’s TF1 Group has posted a positive set of results for the first half of 2022, as Covid-19 pandemic challenges which weighed on turnover in 2020 and 2021 continue to subside.
The results followed news on the Wednesday (July 27) that the France’s competition authority had raised concerned about the group’s plans to merge with the M6 Group.

“The dream we shared is not necessarily shared by the competition authority,” he said. “On that basis, before the dream becomes a nightmare, there also needs to be a reality check, around...
