Foals frontman and guitarist Yannis Philippakis has announced a new collaborative EP with Tony Allen, the late drummer who played heavily with Fela Kuti, under the name Yannis & the Yaw. He’s also shared the EP’s lead single, “Walk Through Fire.”
Landing on August 31st, the Lagos Paris London ft. Tony Allen EP has been in the works from the Foals frontman for over eight years. Philippakis first worked with Tony Allen in Paris in 2016, and began collaborating with the Nigerian Afrobeats pioneer as well as multi-instrumentalists Vincent Taeger, Vincent Taurelle, and Ludovic Bruni.
According to Philippakis, the two-day sessions culminated in an unfinished EP, and they occasionally regrouped to finish over the following four years until Covid isolated both him and Allen. Allen sadly passed in April 2020, and Philippakis felt a responsibility to carry the EP through to the finish line: “There was an imperative to finish it...

Kcrw’s acclaimed music documentary podcast, Lost Notes, returns for its fourth season on March 13, 2024. Co-hosts Novena Carmel (Kcrw) and Michael Barnes (Kcrw / Kpfk / Artform Radio) guide you through eight wildly different and deeply human stories, each set against the kaleidoscopic backdrop of LA’s soul and R&b scene of the 1950s-1970s.
Stories include:
Gloria Jones was a gospel-trained teenage singer from LA whose greatest hit - 1965’s “Tainted Love” - was never quite hers. But she went on to lead a double life as a hit songwriter for some of the greatest artists of all time ... until a fortuitous rediscovery led to her coronation as the Queen of Northern Soul. Fela Kuti is known today as an iconic artist, innovator, and revolutionary ... but in 1969, he was broke, exhausted, and in hot water with the Feds after a disastrous American tour. Yet a chance meeting transformed his musical and political consciousness,...

It’s a fascinating and complicated time to be an Afropop lover, with so many people outside of Africa joining the ranks. Consider Afrobeats, a broad subgenre under the even broader umbrella of African pop, which earned 2.5 billion streams by the midpoint of 2023, per Luminate, an entertainment analytics company. That represented a 34 percent jump in streams over the year before. All of this newfound attention has made for great music, collaborations, and Irl spaces to jam — from Atlanta to Amsterdam to Abuja — but has also raised concerns around ownership, opportunities,...

Mr Eazi has been a leading figure in the world of Afrobeats for years, and he’s always had an expansive definition of that ever-rising music’s sonic and cultural possibilities. The Nigerian-born artist, who now mainly lives in Accra, Ghana, has collaborated with Beyoncé and Diplo, and among his most popular songs is a 2019 cut with J Balvin and Bad Bunny. In fact, as Afrobeats’ profile has grown, he’s bristled at broad catchall genre terms to characterize music from throughout Africa, arguing for less reductive treatment.

Wind gusts quivered the tree limbs, rainfall ricocheted off the roads, and in an instant, power cut off at the old Opera House on Elm Street in Camden, Maine, scuttling screenings there at the Camden International Film Festival.
With that mid-September atmospheric outburst, Hurricane Lee did in the scheduled U.S. premiere of Alex Gibney’s new film In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon. Now, the honor of hosting the American debut goes to the Hamptons International Film Festival this Friday, where the documentary screens as the festival Centerpiece (Simon will appear in person there for a conversation moderated by Rolling Stone’s David Fear). At last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift announced her Midnights album. And this year, the album helped her dominate the night with multiple wins, including her fourth for video of the year.
Swift is the only artist to win the top prize four times — this year it was for her No. 1 hit “Anti-Hero.” During the win that closed out the four-hour show Tuesday night, she shared the stage with those who worked on the music video: director of photography Rina Yang and editor Chancler Haynes.
Swift opened and closed the show with honors: She fangirled, like most of the audience, when she accepted the first award of the night from ‘N Sync, who earned a standing ovation from the crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
“I am not doing well pivoting from this to this. I had your dolls. Are you doing something? What’s going to happen now?...

Tom Harper’s Heart of Stone is a paint-by-numbers global espionage thriller that isn’t done any favors by releasing so soon after Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The film is similar in scope and tone to the most recent Ethan Hunt spy caper but vastly inferior by almost every other measure, especially when it comes to action and characterization.

Just ahead of her appearance in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, Janelle Monáe has released “Float,” a swaggering track that will serve as an anthem for the weekend’s festivities and beyond.
“Float” features Fela Kuti’s son Seun Kuti and his band Egypt 80. Co-produced by Monáe’s frequent collaborators Nate “Rocket” Wonder and Nana Kwabena with Sensei Bueno, the track features bombastic production as Monáe raps, “I’m light as a feather, I’m light as a feather, yeah, baby, I float/ It’s hard to look at my resume, hoo and not find a reason to toast.”
As an equally talented actor, musician, and activist, Monáe does have every reason to toast. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have bought out a performance of new Broadway play Ain’t No Mo‘ this week, in an effort to help the show stave off its closing notice.
The play, written by Jordan E. Cooper and produced by Lee Daniels, is made of a series of sketches that address the question, “What if the U.S. government attempted to solve racism by offering Black Americans one-way plane tickets to Africa?” While well-reviewed, the production announced late last week that it would end its run on Dec. 18, about two weeks after its official opening, due to low ticket sales.
After the closing announcement, Cooper, who also stars in the show, sent out a plea on Instagram, asking patrons to buy tickets or to sponsor tickets for others this week, in the hopes of extending the run.

It’s fair to say that Abbey Road Studios is the most documented recording facility in the world, but only if you count the crosswalk outside. Otherwise, the nine-bedroom mansion turned studio hasn’t really had its day in the cinematic sun, the way that more modest studios like L.A.’s Sound City and Alabama’s Muscle Shoals have. Making up for that with an A-lister-filled movie treatment is “If These Walls Could Sing,” the first feature-length documentary from Mary McCartney, who has a hell of a shared Rolodex to draw upon in gathering the firsthand rock ‘n’ roll anecdotes you expect and want in a film like this. She’s also savvy enough to know that the guy working in the back gluing irreplaceable mid-century microphones back together deserves a few seconds of screen time, too.

Burna Boy makes deeply soulful songs that brim with a karma-clearing vivacity. The Nigerian native’s lucid bops feel like swagged-out libations to the ancestors: his songs convey a dutiful sense of history that blends seamlessly with the chill day-party vibes. And while the content in his songs is in many ways similar to that of other artists on the Afro-fusion scene, Burna Boy’s unique marriage of afrobeats, dancehall, and hip-hop feels earthy, alive, and innately spiritual; each cut (about love, lust, and stunting on haters) is somehow fortifying—like an aural amulet.

Dolly Parton, who said last week she would gracefully accept an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame if it were offered, will have to do just that: The country music superstar was among the nominees selected for a spot in the hall today.
The other inductees chosen through the Hall’s membership voting process are Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, Eminem, Lionel Richie, Eurythmics and Carly Simon.
In addition to those inductees, the Rock Hall’s board, as is traditional, selected its own slate of honorees in various special categories: Judas Priest, musicians Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, singers Harry Belafonte and Elizabeth Cotten, and executives Sylvia Robinson, Jimmy Iovine and Allen Grubman.

Well, she never said she wouldn’t accept it: Dolly Parton, who last month said she didn’t feel she had “earned the right” to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, reiterated today that she would, indeed, “accept gracefully” if voting goes her way.
In an appearance on NPR’s Morning Edition today, Parton, promoting the book Run, Rose, Run that she has co-written with James Patterson, was asked what she’d do if the Rock Hall votes for her induction.
“Well, I’ll accept gracefully,” Parton said. “I would just say thanks and I’ll accept it because the fans vote. Dolly Parton still has a shot at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, whether she feels worthy or not.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation responded today to the country superstar’s request that she not be considered for induction this year, with the Foundation saying that not only is it too late to alter the voting process but that Parton is in fact deserving of induction.
Earlier this week, Parton wrote on social media that since she had yet to record a rock album, she did not feel she had “earned that right” of being in the rock hall. “I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out,” Parton wrote.
But today the Foundation tweeted a statement indicating that ballots had already been sent out earlier this month to 1,100 voters and that voting process is underway.

Does Eminem deserve to get into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? Obviously! But his inclusion among the nominees for the class of 2022 has raised equally obvious questions about whether it’s right for him to be inducted before rap legends and pioneers who preceded him, from Rakim to Snoop Dogg.
The new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now dives into that controversy, with veteran journalist Keith Murphy — who previously wrote about Eminem and the Hall’s “hip-hop problem” — joining host Brian Hiatt for the discussion. To hear the whole episode,...

Duran Duran have dropped “Laughing Boy,” one of the three tracks featured on the deluxe version of their 15th studio album, Future Past. The LP arrives digitally on Friday and is available for preorder.
The song addresses abandoning scenes and wants that are futile. “Oh I have been your laughing boy/I took it on the chin — accepted gracefully,” Simon Le Bon sings. “And all the heat that you deploy — your laughing boy/The more I take — your laughing boy — the more I break.”

A previously unreleased drum solo featuring Afrobeat legend Tony Allen and Cream’s Ginger Baker has been unearthed for a 50th anniversary reissue of Fela Kuti’s Live!, arriving November 19th via Partisan.
Allen and Baker’s drum solo was taken from Africa 70’s performance at the 1978 Berlin Jazz Festival; famously, this was Africa ’70’s last performance with Kuti, with several members, including Allen, who left the group a few months later. While another drum solo from that same festival had appeared as a bonus cut on a previous edition of Live!,...

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, Amber Stevens West and Andrea Bordeaux take our call.
It didn't take us long to fall in love with Starz's Run the World. On top of the dramatic romances, eye candy, and incredible fashion, the show spotlights the incredible friendship between four women living in Harlem. As we've watched the first season and gotten to know the characters, it's almost like Whitney Green (Amber Stevens West), Ella McFair (Andrea Bordeaux), Renee Ross (Bresha Webb), Sondi Hill (Corbin Reid) have become our best friends as well. Just as the four women have grown together on screen, the cast has become just as close in real life.

Hulu’s Original Docuseries McCartney 3,2,1 is a laid-back sit down with Paul McCartney, the man who believed in yesterday, reminiscing about all those years ago. Long-time Beatles fans will have heard most of the stories before, though there are a few new tidbits which have been buried in the mix. The casual conversation provides a wealth of tonality when McCartney talks about the sounds behind the music.
For the chat, McCartney sits down with Rick Rubin in the most familiar of settings: a recording studio, with easy access to the songs being discussed. The six-episode series explores McCartney’s work with The Beatles, Wings, and solo releases. Directed by Zachary Heinzerling, the interview is relaxed, although Paul is often very animated. He fiddles with console buttons, pops up for quick runs at a piano or guitar, and air drums throughout. The black and white filming makes the conversation feel intimate and timeless.

Hot on the heels of its “Summer of Soul” release, one of the best new music documentaries in years, Hulu is gearing up for yet another compelling documentary about the defining music of the 1960s and ’70s. The first official trailer for “McCartney 3, 2, 1,” released today, promises an intimate conversation between Paul McCartney and music producer Rick Rubin, in which the rock legend discusses The Beatles, Wings, and his solo work. Filmed in sparse black and white on an otherwise empty stage, the simplicity of the visuals belies the complexity of the music on display. The message is clear: McCartney needs no bells and whistles.
Here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of Hulu: “Paul McCartney sits down for a rare, in-depth, one on one with legendary producer Rick Rubin to discuss his groundbreaking work with The Beatles, the emblematic 70s arena rock of Wings and his 50 years and counting as a solo artist.

Regina Jones, Idris Elba, Delroy Lindo, Lakeith Stanfield, Zazi Beetz, Jonathan Majors, Damon Wayan Jr., and more star in Netflix's Western, The Harder They Fall. With a cast like that in a Western, who can resist not salivating for it to drop on Netflix. Accompanied by two killer tracks, Barrington Levy's "Here I Come" and Fela Kuti's "Let's Start," this new movie can be counted as one of the highly-anticipated movies this year.

The Hall announced its 2021 Inductees today, saying the new arrivals represent “the most diverse list of Inductees in the history of the organization.”
Three of the inductees were already Hall of Famers in other categories: Turner for her musical partnership with then-husband Ike as Ike and Tina Turner; King for songwriting partnership with Gerry Goffin; and Foo Fighters’ leader Dave Grohl for drumming with Nirvana.
“This diverse class of talented Inductees reflects the Rock Hall’s ongoing commitment to honor artists whose music created the sound of youth culture”, said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “It will make for an unforgettable live celebration of music in October at this year’s Induction Ceremony in Cleveland.”

Home is profoundly where the heartache is in Eyimofe (This Is My Desire), a finely wrought, wistful but mildly unsatisfying debut feature by Nigerian-raised, New York-educated twins Arie and Chuko Esiri. Tracking two resilient Lagos residents, in sequential order, united by one goal––to illegally migrate in search of a better life––the film occasionally feels akin to an immaculately put-together class assignment, over-mindful of the reaction of an end user or assessor, rather than a risky, personality-infused piece of art.
When a real-world locale or environment comes to global notoriety, as Lagos has––one of the world’s fastest-growing cities, with an overall metropolitan population of over 20 million––you can expect art-making and cultural depictions to keep pace. There is of course the burgeoning local film industry, known informally as Nollywood, but its output is little-seen internationally; its indigenous music, such as the ’70s Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the contemporary,...

The straw-man argument at the center of Truth to Power, a documentary about the art and activism of System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian, is: “Can music change the world?” If you know anything about Tankian — or Fela Kuti, Pete Seeger, Billie Holiday, N.W.A, Ludwig van Beethoven, and on and on — the answer is self-evident. But once filmmaker Garin Hovannisian moves past this question and begins showing how Tankian and his bandmates have improved the status of their ancestral homeland, Armenia, the power of truth starts hitting its marks.

In “Viva Nigeria,” one of Fela Kuti’s earliest 45s, the Afrobeat pioneer proclaims, “Men are born, kings are made.” Kuti, who was born a man in 1938 and died a king of music in ’97, transformed his home country and the world at large into something more inclusive and compassionate through driving, dynamic drums, big, funky horns, and scabrous lyrics that skewered the violent military junta controlling Nigeria. He had studied music in London, where he played piano in jazz, R&b, and rock groups — creating a tight bond with Cream...

The Go-Go’s, Foo Fighters, Tina Turner and Jay-Z are among the 16 artists now eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the 2021 ceremony. The complete list was released on Wednesday. Voters will decide the inductees in May for a ceremony to be held this autumn.
An artist first becomes eligible 25 years after a recording is released. Many of this year’s contenders have been eligible far longer than that: Kate Bush, Devo, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Chaka Khan, Carole King (already inducted as a writer), LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner (already inducted with Ike and Tina Turner group) and Dionne Warwick. First-timers on the ballot also include Mary J. Blige and Fela Kuti.
We asked you in a recent poll which overlooked band was your top choice to finally be inducted. The Go-Go’s won that poll.
