Joe Millionaire was Fox’s answer to ABC’s reality show, The Bachelor. The Fox featured twenty single women who flew to France to win the affection of a handsome American man they believed to be worth $50 million. However, the twist was that the man, Evan Marriott, was actually a 28-year-old heavy equipment operator. Two decades after airing, a producer expressed regret over the show. Keep reading to find out why.
Joe Millionaire Producer Expresses Regret Over Show
The show was popular and ran for two seasons. The first season threw Evan Marriott into the public unprepared for fame. After the show, he returned to a private life and started his own construction company. One of the contestants, Sarah Kozer, appeared on another reality show before leaving the spotlight. The winners of the first season, Evan and Zora Andrich, broke up soon after the show.

As if the beauty pageant-style dating special Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire wasn’t controversial enough when it aired in 2000, Fox went even further with Joe Millionaire. The series followed in 2003 and compounded the hidden identity element of its spiritual predecessor with an outright lie. The women here would again compete with one another for the heart of a millionaire while living in a luxurious French chateau — only, the guy they were vying for wasn’t rich, even though he actively participated in that lie all season long. In Tuesday’s (September 24) latest episode of Dark Side of Reality TV, several former contestants — winner Zora Sabrina, along with Melissa Michael, Allison Ball, and Amanda Garcia — and casting producer Dawn George open up about how truly wild their experiences were and what audiences didn’t know about the show. Here are the most bizarre revelations in the special. 1. The contestants...

Twelve years have passed since Joe Millionaire tricked 20 women into thinking they were in the running to marry the heir to a multimillion-dollar fortune, and star Evan Marriott looked every inch the average Joe this Thursday at We tv's Evolution of Relationship Reality Shows panel at the Paley Center for Media.
Now 40, the construction worker – and, briefly, underwear model – was not particularly talkative at the Beverly Hilton-hosted event and did not stop for reporters on the red carpet.
When asked about his beard, Marriott joked that he "grew this overnight. All I do is think about a beard and it comes in.

He starred on one of the most trashy (and totally addicting) reality TV shows of all time ... but then Evan Marriott vanished. The former construction worker was selected for the 2003 Fox reality show "Joe Millionaire," where he tricked 20 women into thinking he was actually loaded. If the final woman decided to still stay with him after he revealed his lack of fortune, the couple would be surprised with $1 million. Fyi: Zora Andrich was the "lucky" lady. She stuck with Marriott and they split the money ... before splitting from each other. He all but vanished after the pop culture phenomenon ended though ... until now! Marriott, now 40, stepped out to We tv's "Evolution of Relationship Reality Shows" event at the Paley Center on Thursday night, looking very different than he used to. Sporting a grizzly beard, white t-shirt, blue jeans and much shorter locks, he was almost unrecognizable! During the panel (via...

When Fox announced its new reality series, I Wanna Marry “Harry”, many viewers flashed back to 2003 and the days of Joe Millionaire – a.k.a. the first time women were fooled into fighting for a man’s heart on TV, only to find out he wasn’t who he said he was.
But other than the whole Prince Charming angle, is there much of a difference between Joe and “Harry”? People asked Joe Millionaire winner Zora Sabrina (formerly known as Zora Andrich) to chime in. As she put it, “Just when I thought they’ve covered every reality show idea … Fox is at it again!

Zora Andrich (now Sabrina), winner of Fox's 2003 Joe Millionaire is a foster mom and mother of two. Zora continues to work in television and divides her time between family, teaching yoga and animal advocacy. Find out what she thinks of the royal masquerade that is I Wanna Marry "Harry" as she watches 12 new women get duped on the Fox reality show each week. The similarities of I Wanna Marry "Harry" to Joe Millionaire definitely triggered some feelings of uncertainty and insecurity for me. At first glance, I like Kimberly. She said something along the lines of how she doesn't care to be with a prince,...

Even 11 years later, network TV has never aired anything else quite like Joe Millionaire, Fox’s groundbreakingly cruel, incredibly popular Reality 1.0 experiment. The basic premise, as if you could ever forget: 20 money-hungry airheads arrive at a gorgeous French chateau to compete for the affections of Evan Marriott, a man who has just inherited more than $50 million. They have no idea that Evan’s money is as fake as their eyelashes – he’s actually a blue-collar construction worker.
Joe piled artifice on top of artifice: Its breakout character was Marriott’s “butler,” played by professional actor Paul Hogan. The Smoking Gun...

Whoever came up with the concept for I Wanna Marry "Harry" deserves a bonus, a garter of some order or other, a ceremonial sword and a small crown with the jewels carefully pried loose.
You can't just be giving away jewels.
The point is that it has been a while since a reality show's concept was so outlandishly irresistible that it created the instant rush of anticipation that "Harry" has. It premieres Tuesday (9 p.m.) on Fox.
Imagine 12 young American women with no more polish than Eliza Doolittle – for that matter, imagine 12 American Eliza Doolittles – dropped off at a Downton Abbey manor house.

Matt Hicks was no stranger to the dating world, but going out with 12 American women tricked into believing he was Prince Harry proved a challenge – and not just for the reasons you would expect.
"That was my first foray into dating American women and it was quite an eye opener," Hicks tells People of posing as the royal redhead on Fox's new reality dating show I Wanna Marry "Harry". "It was very different to my past experience dating English girls."
While Hicks calls American women "extremely loud and forward," he does not mean that in a bad way.

Tonight, on Fox’s new reality series I Wanna Marry Harry, 12 hot, young, British-history-adverse Americans will compete for the affections of Prince Harry! The catch? This British ginger isn’t really Prince Harry, as anyone with a half-decent monocle can already tell, although we’re told that he does score a 99 percent match with his royal counterpart using facial recognition technology. (Science!) Not to worry, though: In case you forget that Matt Hicks is just an impostor, the show helpfully identifies him as “Matt Hicks, Not Really Prince Harry.” Apparently, it’s all part of some benevolent master plan: “I...

Evan Marriott vanished off the face off the earth after starring on Fox's guilty pleasure reality series "Joe Millionaire" almost 10 years ago ... so what happened to him?!For those who didn't watch, Marriott became famous after the wildly popular show in 2003. If the "winner" decided to stick with him anyway, they would be surprised with a million dollar check.Though Zora Andrich stood by Evan, the two split the money and then split from each other shortly after the show wrapped. In a new interview from Fox's 25th Anniversary Special, a very different looking Marriott materialized for the first time in years.Holding a cane and sporting some serious facial hair, Marriott explained how he went back to work as a...

Long before The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, there was Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?, a 2000 live reality TV special seen on Fox by 23 million viewers where 50 women vied to marry, on the spot, Rick Rockwell, a self-proclaimed wealthy businessman. Darva Conger, then 35 and an emergency room nurse, "won" the contest -- and the infamy that went along with it. "It was fun at the time," Conger says about her short-lived fame, which she parlayed into a Playboy cover and a stint on Celebrity Boxing. "I wasn't working and it was ridiculously easy money for what seemed like very little.
