Way back in 2018, the "Three Identical Strangers" documentary shocked viewers around the world as it told the story of three triplets who were separated at birth. The film chronicled the journey of Robert Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman as they discovered that they were identical triplets who were placed with different adoptive families as part of a scientific experiment. Now, their story is being turned into a limited TV series under Sony Pictures Television, with Ben Stiller in talks to star as all three brothers.

In a casting that raises several questions, Ben Stiller is in final talks to star in “Three Identical Strangers,” a limited series adaptation of the acclaimed documentary film, according to Variety.
The 2018 film, which was directed by Tim Wardle and won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland — three identical triplets who meet by chance as adults, and the revelation of the undisclosed scientific experiment that separated them by birth. Upon its release, “Three Identical Strangers” received positive reviews, and made the shortlist for the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature category.
Stiller will play all three of the brothers as adults. What makes his casting unusual is that Galland died by suicide in 1995, when he was 34. Stiller is currently 57, nearly 25 years older than Galland was at time of death. In addition, the meat...

For Tim Wardle, director of the documentary Three Identical Strangers, the last 18 months have been head-spinning.
“To be honest,” he tells Deadline, “from Sundance onwards, life has been a bit of a blur.”
That’s what happens when you make one of the most acclaimed nonfiction films of recent years—a hit not only with critics but the moviegoing public. Wardle’s “truth is stranger than fiction” tale of identical triplets who were separated as infants and then reunited only by chance as young men, won a storytelling prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and then exploded at the box office, earning more than $12 million in North America alone.
“When it it got to $1 million, we were like, ‘Oh my goodness, it’s made $1 million! It’s incredible!’” Wardle recalls. “And then it was $3 million, then it was 5 and it was 10…The whole thing has been a fairy tale.

Tonight on CNN, the incredible story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland is told in a documentary that will shock people unaware of their story. The three baby boys were all adopted at birth from an agency that specialized in placing Jewish children with Jewish families, and the abject malfeasance that the agency committed with regards to how they handled the three babies’ adoption is unimaginable. All of them were split up and divvied out to families who did not know their adoptive child had a sibling. Who were the triplets? Bobby Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland […]

“What the three of us had for literally a decade … was an unbelievable amount of joy and happiness,” said Robert Shafran, one of the subjects of the documentary “Three Identical Strangers,” “but there was also tragedy and there was also this whole sinister thing behind it.” He joined director Tim Wardle for a special Hanukkah dinner and Q&A at Sammy’s Roumanian Steakhouse in New York City to discuss the heartwarming, but also unsettling true story behind their film. Watch them above.

There may not be an obvious connection between musical drama Vox Lux from writer-director Brady Corbet and documentary Three Identical Strangers by Tim Wardle. But the two share one similar quality — they defy their genre. Both titles, released by New York-based distributor, Neon, were spotlighted back-to-back this evening at Contenders.
“My previous film was about the events leading up to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, and after that, I decided to return to America, where I’m from, and make a film about the events that define the 21st century,” said Corbet, who shared the stage with cast member Raffey Cassidy, who plays the young version of Celeste, the central character in Vox Lux.
Through the prism of a fictional rising pop star, played by Natalie Portman as the adult Celeste, Vox Lux turns the mirror on America’s real-life obsession with fame and its gnawing acceptance of gun violence.

“Three Identical Strangers” may be the most surprising documentary since “Tickled,” beginning as a stranger-than-fiction comedy before revealing itself as something much darker. Tim Wardle’s account of triplets reuniting 20 years after being separated at birth — and, until a chance encounter between two brothers made headlines, never knowing their siblings even existed — has won acclaim since its Sundance premiere earlier this year. But in many ways, the story hasn’t ended.
Wardle recently presented his film as part of the Ida Screening Series in Los Angeles, explaining how the Jewish Board, which played a key role in the decades-long events of the film, remains cagey to this day. “When the brothers [Robert Shafran, Edward Galland, and David Kellman] tried to interact with them, they would only deal with the brothers via a medical-malpractice attorney — so you can kind of draw your own conclusions from that,” he said. “They did write a letter of apology,...

Filmmaker Tim Wardle's Three Identical Strangers has crossed the $10 million mark at the U.S. box, continuing the summer box-office documentary boom and achieving a rare feat for a non-fiction title that isn't a Hollywood studio nature pic, concert film or political title.
The critically acclaimed doc tells the startling story of Robert Shafran, Edward Galland and David Kellman, triplets who were separated at birth in the early 1960s and adopted into different families as part of a "nature versus nurture" experiment. The film finished Sunday with $10.6 million in domestic ticket sales.

The mind-boggling true story behind the Sundance award-winning documentary Three Identical Strangers is making its way to the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Film4, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, and Raw Partners have teamed up to adapt the documentary into a narrative feature film. Three Identical Strangers focuses on the story of Robert Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland, identical triplets who were separated at birth. The three were united at age 19, discovering that each was adopted from New York's Louise Wise Adoption Agency and none of their parents knew that they had adopted one-third of a trio. Raw, producer of Sundance breakout documentary Three Identical Strangers, is partnering with Film4 and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment (Ske) on a narrative feature version of the picture.
The Sundance title, about three strangers who inadvertently discover that they are identical triplets separated at birth, won the festival’s Special Jury Prize for Documentary Storytelling.
Raw, Film4 and Ske will develop the new narrative feature following what they describe as “fierce, multi-studio competitive bidding in the life rights of Robert Shafran and David Kellman,” who are two of the identical triplets at the heart of the documentary.
Raw’s Katherine Butler and Dimitri Doganis and Ske’s Sidney Kimmel and John Penotti will produce the as-yet untitled narrative feature film. Film4’s Daniel Battsek and Sam Lavender, Submarine Entertainment’s Josh Braun and Dan Braun, and the doc’s director Tim Wardle will serve as executive producers. Mark O’Connor will oversee development on behalf of Ske.

Okay, this is a tad unusual for the frothy, escapist entertainment of Summer. After just a week, it’s time for another venture into the world of documentaries. Last week the film that opened was another “show-biz personality” doc all about the life of Whitney Houston, just a few weeks after the box office smash (for a doc) profile of the late Fred Rogers, Won’T You Be My Neighbor? Like those films, this week’s release has been collecting praise and awards at several festivals around the country. And though it touches on the perils of publicity, it’s roots are more in the investigation type of non-fiction film, so much so that it’s no wonder that one of the producers is CNN Films (whose other great recent theatrical releases include Life Itself and Blackfish). This also focuses on universal themes of family, even though the subjects siblings are really Three Identical Strangers.

The new documentary Three Identical Strangers tells the story of triplets separated at birth. A reunion of three identical brothers who had no idea the others existed would be powerful stuff all on its own, but there's way more to the story. According to USA Today, director Tim Wardle wants audiences to watch his documentary with as little knowledge about the Stranger Things-esque circumstances surrounding the triplets' separation as possible, but some parts of this story are just too fascinating not to share.
According to Wardle's interview with USA Today, the story began when Robert Shafran attended his first day of community college in 1980. Shafran couldn't go anywhere on campus without someone calling him Eddy. Ultimately, Shafran contacted Eddy Galland, and together the brothers realized they were both adopted and shared the same birthday. Neither set of their adoptive parents had any idea that the baby they had adopted also had a twin.

Chicago – The eternal debate of what affects human development more, our nature or our nurturing, opens up again in the wild story of “Three Identical Strangers,” a new documentary about triplets who were separated at birth, only to discover each other by chance and uncover some difficult truths about that separation.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The structure of the film is an absorbing series of reveals by director Tim Wardle, with each new revelation so exceptional it serves to negate the story up to that point. It also has some uncomfortable examinations of identical triplets and twins who are separated, where in a sense they are the same because of DNA, but also have differences that are due to being raised in different families. There is also some sleight of hand in this part of the debate, as the filmmaker takes the us down one path, only to make us realize we never should have considered it.

In 1980, Robert Shafran drove from Westchester County to the Catskills. It was his first day of college – a community college, he modestly notes, but still, he was going. As he walked through the campus, the 19-year-old noticed how friendly everyone was ... excessively so, in some cases. Then people started calling him "Eddy" and welcoming him back, despite the fact he'd never attended a day of classes here before. Another student tells Robert that he's a dead ringer for his friend, Eddy Galland. Soon, they're driving to Long Island to meet him.

The director of one of the year’s most shocking documentaries talks about his extraordinary subjects, the film-making process, and the age-old question: nature or nurture?
“Ideas are my bread and butter,” says film-maker Tim Wardle. “But it’s hard to find ideas that make you want to get out of bed at 3am and go film somewhere.”
That, however, was not the case when a producer at Raw, the London-based production company where Wardle works, brought to his attention the story of Bobby Shafran, Eddy Galland and David Kellman, a set of identical triplets who knew nothing of one another until they were reunited by happenstance at age 19. That alone would make for a compelling documentary, but their story doesn’t end there.

Separated at birth, then reunited at age 19 in 1980, New York triplets Bobby Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman became the toast of the talk-show circuit after learning that they were long-lost brothers. Though their story received considerable exposure at the time — making them a welcome fixture at Studio 54, landing them a cameo with Madonna in “Desperately Seeking Susan,” and so on — the public tended to focus on the inspirational reunion rather than asking questions about the circumstances of their adoption.
Turns out, the brothers’ story is much bigger and more complicated than anyone imagined, and is only now being properly revealed, thanks to director Tim Wardle’s jaw-dropping decades-later doc “Three Identical Strangers.” A gripping, stranger-than-fiction account of a real-world medical conspiracy, the film begins as a human-interest story and builds to an impressive work of investigative journalism into how and why they were placed with the families who raised them.

Truth is, most definitely, stranger than fiction. Such is the case in the upcoming documentary “Three Identical Strangers.”
Imagine if you met a long-lost twin you never knew you had. Now, imagine if the two of you then met a long-lost triplet. The odds of this happening are staggeringly low, yet it happened for David Kellman, Robert Shafran, and Eddy Galland.

Three Identical Strangers tells an interesting story well, without too much artistic flourish but at the same time not getting in the way of that story or overstaying its welcome. Director Tim Wardle lays a lot on the strength of the events he’s covering, and they are indeed compelling enough on their own to hold your interest. The flipside of this is that the film has little power outside of a first viewing. It’s the kind of doc you’re best off walking into knowing as little as possible about, because possessing key details could legitimately lessen your enjoyment.
The movie’s strongest aesthetic asset is that it at first appears indistinguishable from any daytime TV heartwarming true story news segment. Which makes sense, since the events in question started out as fodder for numerous such news stories in the early 1980s. On his first day of community college,...

The backstory of “Three Identical Strangers” is such obvious movie fodder it’s a wonder it took so long for someone to make a movie about it: In 1980, 19-year-olds Robert Shafran and Edward Galland found each other at the same community college and realized they were twins separated at birth; the ensuing press coverage led them to hear from another 19-year-old, David Kellman, who looked exactly like them. The surprise triplets became fast friends and overnight media sensations. But how did they get pulled apart in the first place?

Almost invariably, the most important element of a good documentary is fascinating subject matter, and Tim Wardle unquestionably zeroed in on that with Three Identical Strangers. Chronicling the startling history of Robert Shafran, Edward Galland and David Kellman, triplets separated at birth who grew up oblivious to one another's existence, the film starts out like a jaunty sitcom, featuring three likable lugs with toothy grins who might have stepped off the set of Welcome Back, Kotter. They look like they were cloned from Andy Samberg. But as the euphoria of reconnection subsides and disconcerting questions begin to arise, a mystery...
