Larry Fessenden is back with new werewolf horror movie Blackout, which is Now Available on Digital/VOD at home courtesy of Dark Sky Films.
Blackout is the third film in Fessenden’s monster trilogy, following Habit (vampires) and Depraved (Frankenstein). Watch a clip below for a sneak peek at his latest monster!
The film follows small town artist Charley (Alex Hurt), a tortured man whose drinking binges blur with his sneaking suspicion that he might likely be a werewolf. He distances himself from those he loves and sinks deeper into solitude, his flashes of memory of his nighttime grisly acts manifested through his artwork.
Fessenden tells us, “I am interested in finding new truths in the classic monster tropes of my youth. The essence of each creature dictates the milieu of the film, and of course, the werewolf is both out of control and regretful so that duality shaped my story.

Unicorn Wars: "It’s Bambi meets Apocalypse Now in this provocative and strangely beautiful horror comedy from acclaimed filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), who uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious zealotry, the tortured legacies of military fascism, and the depths of the soul.
For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war."

Yellow Veil Pictures announced it has boarded world sales on Larry Fessenden’s upcoming horror film “Blackout,” and also released the film’s first teaser poster. The film, which is currently in post-production, will begin the festival circuit later in 2023 after finishing its photography in Hudson Valley, New York this past fall.
“Blackout” depicts a painter who, convinced he is a werewolf, creates chaos in a small town at each full moon.
The horror film joins Fessenden’s own “monsterverse,” with the New York-based actor and filmmaker’s vampire-themed breakout feature “Habit” (1995) and Frankenstein-inspired “Depraved” (2019).
“Blackout” is the second partnership between Yellow Veil Pictures, a New York City and Los Angeles-based film sales and distribution company, and Glass Eye Pix, an American independent film studio Fessenden founded where he serves as CEO. The two joined forces on world sales for “Depraved,” which was released by IFC Midnight in the United States.

René Descartes once said, “cogito ergo sum,” which, for those of us not fluent in dead languages means, “I think, therefore I am.” René’s observation was pithy, but it leaves one question unanswered. I understand that because I think, I am; but what, exactly, am I?
What am I also happens to be the question raised in the Metal Men story in Legends of Tomorrow #4, “Everything Old Is New Again!” Or, more precisely, What are the Metal Men?
Technically speaking, and speaking technically, the Metal Men are androids. They were created by Dr. Will Magnus when he put advanced thinking devices called Responsometers into some vats of molten metal, one Responsometer per vat, and vat’s a lot of metal. The Responsometers caused the metal in the vats to form metallic bodies around themselves. The resulting bodies – one for each of the vats of metal used – had the properties...

Editor's note: Angus Scrimm, who passed away over the weekend at 88, was a veteran horror actor best known for his role in Don Coscarelli's 1979 cult classic "Phantasm." In his later years, he regularly collaborated with low-budget horror filmmaker James Felix McKenney in films ranging from "The Off Season" to "Automatons." Most recently, Scrimm acted in McKenney's episode of "Tales From Beyond the Pale," which premiered on Indiewire last month. Here, McKenney shares his thoughts on Scrimm's friendship and work ethic. I had the extremely good fortune to direct the man called Angus Scrimm in three feature films and an audio play. I interviewed him for an internet radio show and various DVD bonus features, and co-presented his Lifetime Achievement Award at last year's New York City Horror Festival. I was honored to consider him a friend. We last spoke on the phone just before Christmas. We talked about holiday plans,...

Indie horror director Larry Fessenden (Wendigo, Habit) has been producing films at a decent clip in the last few years and Hypothermia is one of the latest projects he has overseen. From director James Felix McKenney, who also helmed Satan Hates You, comes a simple story of the Pelletier family who go out for a day of relaxing ice fishing that becomes a nightmare.
Not only do they discover a strange creature under the ice, but a loudmouthed and opinionated ice fisher and his son make things even worse for the family. Here is when the old monster movie trope of “What’s the bigger danger, the ‘Other’ or your fellow humans?” rears its ugly head.

Horror films that use practical effects for their signature monster instead of spending half their budget on a CGI mistake that only ends up looking awful are always best and it’s the secret to the enduring success of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and Ridley Scott’s Alien. Director James Felix McKenney wisely chooses the practical route for his horror film Hypothermia sees a father (Michael Rooker) and his family on an ice fishing trip only to encounter a monster living in the lake beneath the frozen surface. Here’s a film where the idea at its heart was sublime, but the ultimate execution is a major letdown. A man in a well-made rubber monster suit will almost always trump a CGI monstrosity; that is unless the man in a rubber suit looks like a man in a rubber suit with a horrible mask and not a descendant of The...

Once the sole inhabitants of a planet covered entirely in water, the beings that would become known as the Sea-Borgs were an advanced and peaceful race. Then one day an army of Invaders attacked their world, stripping it of its valuable natural resources and nearly wiping out the world's undersea civilizations. The survivors from the various kingdoms banded together, rebuilding their ruined bodies with cybernetic weaponry and armor in order to combat the alien attackers who continue to exploit and pollute their world.

Ho Ho Yikes! This year Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film is breaking up its annual Underground Holiday Shopping Guide into a couple of different posts by genre. That way it’s easier to really match up your loved one’s entertainment tastes with the best that the underground has to offer!
First up: If there’s a special someone you know who’s bored with traditional blood and scares, here are some outrageous fright flicks that will make them scream with delight when they see them under the tree.
New on DVD:Strange Girls
One of Bad Lit’s favorite horror flicks of the past five years finally made it to DVD in 2011. In her debut feature, filmmaker Rona Mark created two of the most original on-screen murderers in Virginia and Georgia Gruczechy — twin, socially-reclusive, psychotic girls with their own invented language who kill anyone who they think is deserving.

Already acquired by Mpi Media Group (Dark Sky Films), we landed a pretty awesome creature stills from James Felix McKenney's Hypothermia, the latest genre effort from producers Glass Eye Pix (Innkeepers, Stake Land, House of the Devil, Roost, Satan Hates You, I Sell the Dead, Bitter Feast and dozens more. Starring Michael Rooker, Blanche Baker, Greg Finley, Don Wood, Ben Forster and Amy Chang, imagine Jaws under the ice, imagine terror at 20 degrees below freezing... "In a remote winter hideaway devoid of any sign of life, two unsuspecting families on an ice-fishing vacation discover something sinister lurking in the frozen lake. Remember that cartoon staple of the angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other? James Felix McKenney’s new film, Satan Hates You, is a darkly comic, and ironically unfunny twist on that idea with not much else going on, and it’s a shame.
He has managed to waste genre favorites Michael Berryman (as an overly moralistic hotel clerk) Debbie Rochon (a bad girl gone good), Reggie Bannister (a seamy bar owner), and Angus Scrimm (a telev”angel”ist) in a series of throwaway roles that would be better suited to sketches or short films instead of a feature length film that doesn’t really have enough story to tell.
This is meant to be a satiric take on Christian propaganda films, but don’t they really make fun of themselves? The movie tells the dual stories of Marc and Wendy, two “sinners” who are pushed to...

If it’s mid-summer, then it’s time for filmmakers to start thinking about their 2012 film festival runs. Yep, several fests are already opening up their submission process. A few weeks ago, Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film reported that the 50th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival was already looking for films. And now, two more unique fests have sent out their initial calls for 2012 already.
Boston Underground Film Festival
First up, the indomitable Boston Underground Film Festival will be celebrating their 14th raucous year in operation in late March of 2012 and they’re looking for outrageous, transgressive flicks to fill their programming slate.

The Hypothermia Teaser Trailer has premiered. James Felix McKenney‘s Hypothermia (2010) teaser trailer stars Michael Rooker, Greg Finley, Blanche Baker, Don Wood, and Amy Chang. Hypothermia‘s plot synopsis: “Imagine Jaws under the ice, imagine terror at 20 degrees below freezing… In a remote winter hideaway devoid of any sign of life, two unsuspecting families on an ice-fishing vacation discover something sinister lurking in the frozen lake. One thing is for certain – the creature is hungry, and the only prey left is human.”
They certainly didn’t hold back on this teaser trailer. The blood flows. I think they show the monster far too many times and too much of it but since Michael Rooker is in it, I’ll give it a chance. Hypothermia‘s cast also includes Benjamin Hugh and Abel Forster.
