Sneaky, menacing and funny are descriptions that come up more than once in Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen, but not one of the three words quite does justice to this irresistibly pitch-black comedy, opening tonight at the Golden Theatre on Broadway.
Then again, justice has very little to do with what goes on in this deliciously wicked tale of bloodstained propriety and revenge, state-sanctioned or otherwise. Set mostly in a Lancashire pub in the mid-1960s during the last days of England’s legal capital punishment, the Olivier Award-winning Hangmen resurrects not only an era of U.K. history but the playwright’s early fascination with very dark impulses.
And no one does dark impulses with as much comedic flare – yes, it’s sneaky, menacing and funny – as McDonagh at full tilt.
Directed with deadly assurance by Matthew Dunster,...

According to a tweet from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Part 5 of the Netflix series would have included a long-awaited (and extremely witchy!) crossover with The CW’s Riverdale. In fact, the art accompanying his tweet suggests that some of the parent series’ biggest names — Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Cheryl — would have engaged in a full-on “witch war” with Sabrina’s crew.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Thursday’s Burden of Truth. Proceed at your own risk!
The biggest question facing Burden of Truth‘s Joanna and Billy following the Season 3 finale: Will the partners, in life and in work, be back for another season? Even if the import — which as of Thursday afternoon had yet to be officially renewed by Canadian broadcaster CBC — doesn’t return, the finale provided plenty of closure for the lawyers.

The 100 took a break from its regularly scheduled programming on Wednesday to tell the story of the Second Dawn, filling in a few key blanks about Shepherd Bill, the death of Becca Franco and the reason Clarke & Co. found bunker banners all the way on Nakara. (Ok, maybe more than a few blanks were filled.)
Our story begins on the (first) last night of the world. A young rebel named Callie Cadogan (played by Iola Evans) is once again arguing with her parents about what she plans to do with her future, a dramatic exchange they’ve clearly played out numerous times already.

On tonight’s Burden of Truth, Joanna and Billy finally unload their feelings about her surprise pregnancy — and they’re definitely not using their quiet voices during the discussion, as seen in TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek from Season 3’s penultimate episode (The CW, 8/7c).
After skirting around the topic last week and giving his girlfriend her space, Billy (played by Peter Mooney), at last, confronts Joanna (Kristin Kreuk) about the child growing inside of her. “If I’m not enough, you need to tell me. If you need more…,” he begs, the anguish in his voice rising with every word.

Last year, the freshman outing of the Burden of Truth TV show on The CW didn't exactly set the Nielsen ratings afire, but the series, which originates on Canada's CBC, was not cancelled. Just days before the second season debuted, The CW also renewed it for Summer 2020, so the littlest network must be getting enough bang for its buck. Now, can the series bear the burden of The CW's faith in it? Will Burden of Truth be cancelled or renewed beyond season three? Stay tuned.

Stars: Taylor Schilling, Jackson Robert Scott, Peter Mooney, Brittany Allen, Colm Feore | Written by Jeff Buhler | Directed by Nicholas McCarthy
The third horror film from director Nicholas McCarthy, The Prodigy is an entry in the creepy kid genre typified by the likes of Orphan (2009) and Joshua (2007), aka The Devil’s Child. As such it’s something of a mixed bag, delivering a handful of genuinely nasty moments, but let down by a frustrating script that completely ignores the premise implied in the title.
Taylor Schilling (Orange Is The New Black) and Peter Mooney play Sarah and John Blume, a middle-class Pennysylvania couple whose longed-for child is born at the exact same moment that police shoot and kill Hungarian-speaking serial killer Edward Scarka (Paul Fauteux) in nearby Ohio. Eight years later, their young son Miles (Jackson Robert Scott) is attending school for gifted children, after having grown up with an unusually high Iq,...

Most horror fans would welcome watching possessed kids run amuck with power tools above their head or wantonly parade paranormal powers instead of stealthily sliding cucumbers behind placid cats like normal children, but there’s nothing more maddening than seeing horror films shamelessly nip from the classics. Director Nicholas McCarthy’s The Prodigy is an evil kid flick which adheres to the textbook; adopting fladgets and tart devices while just about hitting plot beats and deviating enough so it’s not completely cumbersome.
Eight years after the birth of their son Miles (Jackson Robert Scott), Pennsylvania based couple, John and Sarah Blume (Peter Mooney and Taylor Schilling) are told their offspring has a freakishly high Iq and is advancing too fast. What they don’t realise (like viewers) is that Miles is possessed by the narked spirit of recently departed serial killer Edward Sarka, who plans to take permanent residence...

If I’m being perfectly honest, after watching the first extended trailer for The Prodigy, I was ready to write it off as yet another possessed kid movie. But thankfully, writer Jeff Buhler and director Nicholas McCarthy weren’t ready to mine familiar territory with this film, and instead of creating a movie focused on an evil kid that needs to be saved from demonic forces, The Prodigy goes the reincarnation route, and that alone made the film immensely enjoyable (the greatest feeling for me when I am watching movies in this day and age is to be surprised). Beyond that, The Prodigy is a surprisingly dark and disturbing story that taps into not only every parent's worst fears, but also serves as a reminder to all of us that evil can lurk anywhere, and come from the most unexpected of places.

There’s no shortage of films about evil children, so at the risk of indulging in hyperbole, let’s just say Nicholas McCarthy’s “The Prodigy” is the latest. If the idea of a serial-killing pre-teen terrifies you, this film might give off some shivers, but “The Prodigy” doesn’t add anything terribly new to the recipe. Except a little paprika. (Literally.)
Taylor Schilling stars as Sarah, a woman whose eight-year-old child Miles has heterochromia (one eye is a different color than the other), and a genius-level intelligence. He also has a nasty tendency to beat his fellow students with a wrench. There’s something terribly wrong with Miles, but Sarah just can’t figure out what it is.
The audience, however, knows exactly what’s wrong from the film’s opening minutes. Miles was born at the exact same time as a despicable serial killer, Edward Scarka, was shot dead by the police.

It’s not the Devil that’s taken hold of young Miles Bloom, and that’s hardly a spoiler for director Nicholas McCarthy’s gruesome “The Prodigy,” which uses its opening minutes to introduce a new idea to the “possessed kid” horror subgenre and then keeps twisting it into some unexpected shapes — if not the most artful ones. The title hasn’t even come up before a pair of seemingly disparate subplots dovetail into one, as a much-wanted baby is born just as a psychotic killer is gunned down by police. And there’s more: “The Prodigy” isn’t compelled by subtlety. As Edward Scarka (Paul Fauteux) lays dying on the ground, pierced by multiple gunshot wounds, McCarthy cuts to baby Miles, being wiped clean of a set of blood splotches in the exact same spots on his infant chest.
