Jonathan Groff, Bobby Darin And The Art Of Doing It All – Deadline Tony Award Q&a
Image
This June, Jonathan Groff will have the rare chance to win Tony Awards in two consecutive years. If he repeats last year’s triumph for Merrily We Roll Along with one for this year’s Just In Time, he’ll join a very exclusive club of six Broadway greats: Laurie Metcalf, Judith Light, Stephen Spinella, Sandy Dennis, Gwen Verdon, and Shirley Booth.

For Groff, the two-in-a-row possibility, exciting enough, even has a hint more frisson: Just In Time, a biographical musical of Bobby Darin, marks a career first for the busy actor. “I’ve never been part of a project from its conception. Eight years ago this month, actually, Ted Chapin asked me to do a night of Bobby Darin music at the 92nd Street Y and I read this book called Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee, written by Dodd Darin, the son of Bobby and Sandy,...

‘Sunset Boulevard’ star Tom Francis reveals how he plays ‘the complete and utter opposite’ of Nicole Scherzinger’s Norma Desmond
Image
“It literally hit me like a ton of bricks,” says Tom Francis about the moment he finally realized that he earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance in Sunset Boulevard. The feeling of recognition ebbs and flows for the actor, who plays Joe Gillis in the musical revival. He shares, “I was really overcome with joy and now it feels not real at the moment. I keep fluctuating between being confused as to how it happened and so overjoyed as to the fact that it’s happened.” Francis recently sat down with Gold Derby to discuss his leading role in the radically reimagined revival, playing to the cameras on stage, his iconic walk through Shubert Alley, and much more.

Gold Derby: I know when you auditioned for director Jamie Lloyd, you didn’t know either the original film or Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical very well. What about the...

Nicole Scherzinger Wins Broadway's Most Difficult Acting Prize to Win at Drama League Awards 2025
Image
The best of Broadway and Off-Broadway were honored at the 2025 Drama League Awards and Nicole Scherzinger took home the most coveted acting award of the year!

The event took place on Friday afternoon (May 16) at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City.

While the Tony Awards gives out eight acting awards each year to recognize the best in both plays and musicals with gendered categories for leading and supporting performances, the Drama League Awards only gives out one acting award each year. The Distinguished Performance Award has dozens of nominees and combines all performances into one category, making it incredibly difficult to ever win the award. Once you win once, you can never win again, so some actors receive honorary notices when they return to Broadway.

Nicole won the this year’s Distinguished Performance Award for her work in the musical Sunset Blvd.

Video: Tom Francis Wasn't Familiar with Sunset Blvd Before Joining the Show
Image
With his first Tony nomination under his belt, Sunset Blvd. star Tom Francis visited The View to discuss the production, working with his co-star Nicole Scherzinger, and more. "I feel like I haven't processed it yet," the actor told Alyssa Farah Griffin of all of the success surrounding the show. "We're very much in the throws of Tony campaigns and stuff at the moment, and I feel like when I step back after I finish this job, I'm going to look back and be like, 'Wow, that really was a job that formed my career in a beautiful way.'" Though Francis has found success with his portrayal of Joe Gillis- first on the West End and now on Broadway- he wasn't familiar with the material....

Jonathan Groff would be the first person to win Best Actor in a Musical consecutively
Image
Just in Time star Jonathan Groff in currently in second place in Gold Derby's Tony Awards predictions for Best Actor in a Musical, only behind fellow Glee alum Darren Criss for Maybe Happy Ending. The former triumphed for Merrily We Roll Along just last year, so if he prevails again, he'd be the first individual in history to win this category consecutively.

Prior to Groff, five men were Tony nominated for Best Actor in a Musical two years in a row, but didn't emerge victorious:

Gregory Hines in 1980 for Comin' Uptown and 1981 for Sophisticated Ladies George Hearn in 1983 for A Doll's Life and 1984 for La Cage aux Folles (the latter of which resulted in a win) Patrick Wilson in 2001 for The Full Monty and 2002 for Oklahoma! Michael Cerveris in 2006 for Sweeney Todd and 2007 for LoveMusik Brian d'Arcy James in 2023 for Into the Woods and 2024 for Days of Wine and Roses...

‘A fever dream’: Jamie Lloyd and Tom Francis describe their radical new take on ‘Sunset Boulevard’
Image
“I’m not sure anyone’s going to like this, it is such a big swing and such a departure from that original production,” Jamie Lloyd remembers thinking about his remounting of Sunset Boulevard right after seeing the dress rehearsal of the Broadway production. Following a successful four-month run in London that earned 11 Olivier Award nominations, Lloyd’s cinematic take on the musical opened in New York in October and will conclude in July. The Tony-nominated director recently sat down with Gold Derby and other journalists at the 2025 Tony Awards Meet the Nominees press event.

The visionary director, who has received Tony nominations for his productions of Betrayal and A Doll’s House, offered insight into his approach for his radical reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical. He shared, “It’s about a psychological space, a liminal psychological place. The whole production is almost, in my mind, like a fever...

Tom Francis Is Ready to Flex His Muscles for Hollywood
Image
Tom Francis first discovered his talents while listening to Oasis. The British-born actor, who is currently starring (alongside Nicole Scherzinger) in the Broadway run of Sunset Blvd., was seven years old. The album was Don’t Believe the Truth. “I became absolutely obsessed with the band, and there’s a song that closes the album called ‘Let There Be Love,’ and I remember sitting down with my guitar and figuring out how to play and sing it,” he explains to The Hollywood Reporter. Francis’ parents happened to be eavesdropping. “I got so embarrassed, and shouted at them like, ‘Don’t ever do that to me again,'” he laughs. “I didn’t want any to watch me sing, ever. But then that night at dinner, my dad told me, ‘I think you’re really very good.’ And I took that on.”

Eighteen years later, Francis, 25, is nominated for a Tony Award...

Nicole Scherzinger on How Her “Pop Star Mentality” Prepared Her for ‘Sunset Blvd.,’ “Manifesting” a Film Adaptation and First Tony Nom
Image
Nicole Scherzinger is ready for her Tonys closeup.

Scherzinger scored her first Tony nomination last week for playing Norma Desmond, a former film star who enlists Joe Gillis (played by Tom Francis) to help with her planned comeback, in director Jamie Lloyd’s reinvention of the musical and film Sunset Boulevard, with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music.

The show, titled Sunset Blvd. in this iteration, is also her Broadway debut, and she’s nominated alongside 11-time Tony nominee Audra McDonald (Gypsy), Megan Hilty (Death Becomes Her), Jasmine Amy Rogers (Boop! The Musical) and Jennifer Simard (Death Becomes Her). Scherzinger tells The Hollywood Reporter she feels like she is “with the greats.”

However, for Scherzinger, who rose to fame as the lead singer of the girl group The Pussycat Dolls, this moment has been a journey of more than 30 years “home” to the Broadway stage. And despite being proud of the “many careers” she’s had,...

‘Boop! The Musical’ leads 2025 Drama Desk Awards nominations; off-Broadway dominates play categories
Image
Nominations for the 69th annual Drama Desk Awards were announced Wednesday by Tony- and Grammy-nominated actor Norm Lewis. Winners will be announced on June 1, at a ceremony taking place at NYU Skirball and hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess.

The Drama Desk Awards are unique in the landscape of New York theater, as they are the only place where Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway compete within the same categories. The nominating committee of the 2025 Drama Desk Awards comprises Chair Martha Wade Steketee, Linda Armstrong, Daniel Dinero, Peter Filichia, Kenji Fujishima, Raven Snook, and Charles Wright.

The Broadway transfers of Buena Vista Social Club, Dead Outlaw, English, Job, and Oh, Mary! were not eligible for these kudos, having already competed for their off-Broadway runs.

Boop! The Musical clearly captured the hearts of the nominators. The infectiously upbeat tuner is the most nominated production, with 11 nominations. Nipping at its heels is...

Tony Awards Nominations Predictions 2025: Will Hollywood Rule The Day?
Image
Forty-two productions are eligible for Tony Award nominations this year – the announcements come Thursday morning – making many of the categories very, very competitive. Will the movie and TV stars take over the awards just as they’ve done at the box office? Is there room in the major categories for the high-tech items like Stranger Things: The First Shadow and The Picture Of Dorian Gray? And can anything stop Cole Escola and Oh, Mary! I wouldn’t bet on it.

The nominations for The 78th Annual Tony Awards will be announced Thursday, May 1, live from Sofitel New York on the Tony Awards official YouTube page at 9 a.m. Et. A selection of categories will be revealed live on CBS Mornings at 8:30 a.m. Et. A complete list of nominees will be available at TonyAwards.com immediately following the announcement.

Final 2025 Tony nominations predictions by show: ‘Death Becomes Her’ and ‘Oh, Mary!’ will lead
Image
A new musical and two original plays will lead the 2025 Tony Awards nominations, according to Gold Derby's official odds in 17 categories ahead of Thursday's announcement.

Death Becomes Her, a stage adaptation of the 1992 cult classic comedy film, will have the biggest tally of all shows with eight. It's expected haul follows its 12 nominations at the Outer Critics Circle last week, where it similarly bested all other shows. Two original musicals, Dead Outlaw and Maybe Happy Ending, will tie at six nominations apiece. Gypsy and Sunset Boulevard, which are our leading contenders for the Best Musical Revival prize, and British import Operation Mincemeat will also likely score well with nominators with five bids each.

Nicole Scherzinger ‘Sunset Blvd.’ Viral Video Bullhorn Auctioned For Charity
Image
The bullhorn used by Sunset Blvd. star Nicole Scherzinger last week when a matinee performance of the Broadway musical was canceled due to a sound system glitch was put to further good use over the weekend when it was auctioned off for charity.

The bullhorn, through which Scherzinger serenaded the audience with the show’s “With One Look” when last Wednesday’s matinee was canceled, raised $7,000 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Sunset Blvd. composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and director Jamie Lloyd joined the cast onstage for the auction following Friday night’s performance.

Lloyd Webber also made a surprise appearance at the start of Friday’s second act when live video captures actor Tom Francis walking through the dressing rooms of the St. James Theatre.

Video of Scherzinger singing through the white and red bullhorn went viral last week. Watch the video below.

The auction was led by Sunset Blvd.

Goodbye, ‘You’: Show Bosses on Penn Badgley’s ‘Horrific’ Finale Moment, [Spoiler] Returning and Wanting Viewers to See Who Joe Really Is: ‘He’s a F—ing Monster’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the series finale of “You,” now streaming on Netflix.

Joe Goldberg is finally in a cage for good, and not the one of his own making. In the series finale of Netflix’s stalker-rom-com-thriller “You,” Joe, Penn Badgley’s charismatic serial killer, gets his long-overdue comeuppance at the hands of his former victims, who join forces to put him behind bars once and for all.

When we pick up with Joe at the beginning of Season 5, he’s happily married to the uber-rich Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), who’s used her family’s sizable resources to snatch Joe’s son Henry (Frankie DeMaio) from the adopted fathers he was dumped with at the end of Season 3 after Joe flees Northern California, having murdered Henry’s (also murderous) mother, Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti). Now that Joe has returned to New York City a free man,...

‘You’ Season 5 Cast and Character Guide: Who’s Who in the Final Season?
Image
Penn Badgley is wrapping up his time as Joe Goldberg in “You” Season 5, which brings back a handful of familiar faces.

Charlotte Ritchie’s Kate Lockwood returns as Kate and Joe move to New York City, where Joe is forced to deal with Kate’s complex family — which includes Anna Camp acting as twins — before he meets a new love interest in Madeline Brewer’s Bronte.

Keep reading to see which “You” characters are back for the last season of the Netflix series.

Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg Netflix

Penn Badgley returns to star as Joe Goldberg, who attempts to put his murderous past behind him when he moves back to New York City with his wife, Kate, and gains a mild amount of celebrity from Kate’s wealth and status.

Badgley is best known for starring as Dan Humphrey in “Gossip Girl,” and has also appeared in “Easy A,...

How ‘You’ Season 5 Bosses Crafted Joe Goldberg’s Final Takedown
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “You” Season 5, Episode 10.

While “You” has seen Joe Goldberg’s murderous habits take him to some very dark, gruesome places, Penn Badgley and showrunners Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo knew the Netflix series’ fifth and final season had to find the character at his “most horrific.”

“We were all about trying to make Joe see what he is,” Foley told TheWrap. “We were about waking the audience to what they were co-signing all this entire time, and that meant him being his most animalistic, not pulling any punches and not falling in love with him so hard that we forget what we’re really trying to say here and what he is.”

Whereas past seasons saw Joe narrowly escape his indiscretions relatively unscathed, the showrunners went into Season 5 planning knowing it was the end of the road for “You” after receiving a renewal...

Who Plays Teddy Lockwood In Netflix's You Season 5
Image
This post contains spoilers for "You" season 5.

In the "Succession"-flavored final season of Netflix's "You," the Lockwood family is a moral cesspool — with one exception. While the other siblings and in-laws are all viciously fighting for power or recognition, Teddy Lockwood (Griffin Matthews), the half-sibling to Joe's wife Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) and twins Reagan and Maddie, is just trying to keep a foothold at the company his racist father helped build. As a Black, gay man whose conception was fraught at best, Teddy is frank about how the melodramatic power plays and murder schemes that make "You" so fun to watch could impact him much differently than his white, old money counterparts.

Teddy is a breath of fresh air, and spends a good chunk of the season as one of the most morally spotless characters in Joe's world. If we keep the parallel to HBO's "Succession" going (and...

‘You’ showrunners break down Joe’s fate in the series finale: ‘Nobody wanted to redeem him’
Image
Warning: The following story contains details about the fifth and final season of You, streaming now on Netflix.

Hello, you. Joe Goldberg's reign of terror has come to an end. Did you get what you wanted?

The fifth and final season of Netflix's adaptation of You brought Joe (Penn Badgley) back to New York for one last murderous romp — and a taste of his own medicine.

With the help of Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), Joe was able to move home, resume living under his true name, and even take custody of his son. But true to form, that's not enough for him, and soon enough he has a new obsession in Bronte (Madeline Brewer), whom he finds breaking into his bookstore and then takes under his wing (and eventually into his bed). But Bronte isn't who she says she is. Of course, that's not her real name, but the truth...

After five seasons and a big old pile of dead bodies in each one, serial killer and self-described romantic Joe Goldberg, the character made famous by noted Swiftie Penn Badgley on the Netflix series, has finally been held accountable. So how did we get here?

We reunite with Joe in the season 5 premiere when, thanks to his wealthy and powerful wife Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie) — who he met and wooed while pretending to be a professor named Jonathan Moore — he's back in New York City and reclaiming his real name. Joe first left the Big Apple after the show's debut season due to the fact that he murdered a bunch of people there, including his then-girlfriend Guinevere Beck, played by Elizabeth Lail...

Here's How Many People You's Joe Goldberg Has Killed
Image
This article contains discussions of child abuse and suicide.

Stop reading this right now if you haven't finished all of "You" — spoilers are coming!

The fifth and final season of "You," the Netflix series that lets noted Taylor Swift fan Penn Badgley play a serial killer convinced he's actually some sort of white knight, is finally out ... which means we can finally assess Joe Goldberg's (Badgley) body count. No, I don't mean how many people Joe has dated throughout the series; I'm talking about how many people he's killed.

In case you've forgotten exactly what went down in the show's first four seasons, here's the overview. Joe Goldberg, who presents himself as a hopeless romantic but actually seems to love murder much more than he loves love, had a very difficult childhood; his biological father abused both him and his mother, and ultimately, a young Joe shoots and kills him.

2025 Drama League Awards nominations: 51 actors up for Distinguished Performance, ‘The Hills of California’ snubbed
Image
Nominations for the 2025 Drama League Awards were announced Tuesday by current Broadway stars Sarah Hyland (The Great Gatsby) and Orville Peck (Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club). Winners will be announced May 19 at a ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and off-Broadway productions and stand out for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. An actor can only win it once in their career. After they have won, they can never be nominated again. This year, 51 performers are nominated. There is no crossover between members who vote on the Drama League Awards and the Tonys, but the nominations can nevertheless be revealing as to which performances and productions break through, or not, with this group’s expanded categories.

One of the most shocking results of the nominations is the complete omission of The Hills of California. The Jez Butterworth play is one of...

Image
Exclusive: Peter Berg’s next film looks to be in a full-on sprint towards production as sources tell Deadline that Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis are set to star in the director’s next film The Mosquito Bowl for Netflix. They join Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård in the pic, which falls under Berg’s deal with the studio that he recently reupped.

Based on Buzz Bissinger’s New York Times bestseller The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, the film is set after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when four of America’s top college football stars set their fame aside to enlist in the Marines. As they prepare for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, they play in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history – a game that, for many, will be the last they ever play.
