When writer and director Sterlin Harjo was 5 years old, his mother lost a baby. “He was only alive for a few hours,” Harjo recalls. “I think at 5, when you know you lost a sibling, it’s very confusing. You don’t know how to process that.”
The loss of his brother is something that’s never left him.
“I remember, through the grief and everything, going to school and a Ta asked me how I was doing. It was really the first time I’d been asked that, because I didn’t know the kid,” Harjo tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It was just heavy loss that I felt. I didn’t know then; I’d never experienced that. I know that’s permeated and has been a part of my art and storytelling since.”

“Reservation Dogs” was always about death.
The FX series might open with a snack heist and teen shenanigans, but it’s quickly revealed that the four central characters are grieving the loss of a fifth. They make plans to leave home, they steal chips, and grapple with complex, painful emotions that don’t often make sense, but they find solace in each other.
In the series finale, which aired September 27 on FX, death looms large once more — but in stark contrast to how the Rez Dogs mourned and missed their friend for three seasons. When a local elder passes away, the community comes together to grieve, but also to eat, to laugh, to chide Cheese (Lane Factor) for hitting someone in the face with a shovel (by accident).

Spoiler Alert: This column contains spoilers from “Dig,” the series finale of FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” now streaming on Hulu.
Death has always loomed over “Reservation Dogs,” the coming-of-age comedy that concludes its run on FX this week. When the show began, its teenage protagonists were still actively mourning their friend Daniel (Dalton Cramer), who died by suicide a year prior. Over three seasons, the show emphasized its namesake foursome were not alone in their grief. Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs) doesn’t remember much about her late mother, but her mother’s friends do; when Elora’s grandmother Mabel (Geraldine Keams) passes away, her final hours bring the entire small, Native town of Okern, Oklahoma into their home. Some of the series’ most memorable characters, like warrior William Knifeman (Dallas Goldtooth), are themselves no longer living — they’re spirits who return to counsel those left behind.

The television landscape is a seemingly endless fountain of content to consume (even during these striking times), making it difficult to absorb every delightful drop. One such victim of this endless onslaught is the fantastic series Reservation Dogs. The FX series, which streams on Hulu exclusively, debuted back in 2021 and is currently dropping episodes for its third and final season, but I still believe it has yet to achieve its full popularity potential. Created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, Reservation Dogs follows a group of Indigenous adolescents who are trying to make their way in the world following the loss of their friend, Daniel (Dalton Cramer). What begins as a journey of grief and self-discovery for the friends ultimately transforms into a slice-of-life dramedy about their rural Oklahoma community. The show takes hilarity and heartbreak and wraps it up into a package so unique I can’t compare it...

“Reservation Dogs” started with a farewell.
The revelatory FX comedy from Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi picked up in Season 1 with Elora Danan (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs), Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) and Cheese (Lane Factor) mourning their friend Daniel (Dalton Cramer), processing his suicide with petty theft and rebellion and a plan to run away from home. The show’s third and final season, premiering today, finds the res dogs cautiously forging their own paths — no longer afraid of losing each other and Daniel’s memory the way they were before visiting California. The four episodes screened for critics honor the show’s off-kilter humor and striking poignance, setting up a final farewell that will be equally bittersweet and triumphant.

Writer and creator Sterlin Harjo promised that the Season 3 finale of “Reservation Dogs” would serve as the perfect ending to the FX series on Hulu. It’s a bold claim in a culture that often sees fans ripping finales and their writers apart. But if the first few episodes of Season 3 are any indication, it’s more than likely our beloved Rez Dogs will get as close to perfect as possible.
From the first four episodes of the final season available for review, it’s clear the writers know exactly what the viewers want: Surreal spirits and quirky side characters guiding and challenging the young crew. Storytelling that manages to weave together the silly and absurd with some of the harsh realities Native populations have had to face over generations (the atrocities and aftermath of Indian boarding schools get called out on more than one occasion this season). And of course,...

The Rez Dogs return home for a final confrontation of the soul. FX released the official Reservation Dogs Season 3 trailer on Thursday, teasing the last season of the hit show created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi. The series focuses on Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs), Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor), four Indigenous teens in rural Oklahoma looking for purpose and opportunity in a world that’s often against them.
After spending two seasons gathering funds to travel to California in honor of their dead friend, Daniel (Dalton Cramer), the crew accomplished their mission but needed clarification about their next steps. In the Reservation Dogs Season 3, the foursome returns home. Well, except for Bear, who breaks from the group to embark on a soul-searching journey alongside the spirit of a long-passed warrior (Dallas Goldtooth) and a conspiracy theorist named Maximus (Graham Greene). Meanwhile, Elora...

The Rez Dogs are heading back home for their final hurrah. FX has released the official trailer for the third and final season of “Reservation Dogs,” the acclaimed FX on Hulu dramedy series.
Created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, with Harjo serving as the series showrunner, “Reservation Dogs” focuses on four teenagers — Elora (Devery Jacobs), Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Cheese (Lane Factor), and Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) — who were born and raised in a small Indigenous reservation in Oklahoma. The first two seasons of the show focused on the group’s quest to raise money to travel to California, a long-time dream of their dead friend, Daniel (Dalton Cramer). The Season 2 finale saw the crew finally succeed in their goal, making it to the beaches of Los Angeles and saying an emotional goodbye to Daniel.
Their move proves to be temporary, however, as the trailer for Season 3 opens with the foursome traveling back home.

One of TV’s very best shows is coming to an early end. “Reservation Dogs,” the acclaimed FX on Hulu series about four teenagers living on a Native American reservation in Oklahoma, will end with its upcoming third season.
Series creator Sterlin Harjo made the announcement on Thursday, via a post on his Instagram. In the post, Harjo emphasized that the decision to end the series was made by him, and it was the right move creatively.
“Aho young and old warriors!” Harjo wrote. “Here it is: the coming third season of ‘Reservation Dogs’ will be the final season. That’s a difficult line to write and a more difficult decision to make. However, it’s the correct decision creatively for the show. I always knew what the end of this story would be, I just didn’t know when it would arrive. "Reservation Dogs" is must-see TV, the kind of series that offers so much more than what anyone could expect from its marketing. The FX series follows the titular Reservation Dogs, a crew of four Indigenous teenagers living on a reservation in rural Oklahoma, as they try to navigate growing up Native in the wake of losing their fifth member, Daniel (Dalton Cramer), to suicide. The series, created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, is equal turns hilarious and heartwarming, eye-opening and gut-busting. "Reservation Dogs" finds universal truths in its very specific viewpoints, helping viewers empathize with characters that American pop culture has all too often ignored.
One thing that "Reservation Dogs" does brilliantly is create a fully lived-in world for its characters, and the direction can change quite a bit from episode to episode based on the perspective characters. In an interview with /Film's Jack Giroux, writer, director, and executive...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Reservation Dogs Season 2, Episode 1o, “I Still Believe.”] Reservation Dogs has wrapped up its second season, and while the installment, “I Still Believe,” closed one chapter, it began another as the FX series looks ahead to Season 3. Since the series from creator Sterlin Harjo debuted in 2021, it has chronicled the adventures of four friends as they worked towards fulfilling their late pal Daniel’s (Dalton Cramer) wish to visit California. Living in the shadow of Daniel’s suicide, the group of friends have worked and struggled to stay united as Season 2 has unfolded, but the finale marked a shift in their dynamic. And [Spoiler Alert], Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Elora (Devery Jacobs), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor) finally made good on their promise, as the club of Indigenous teens who refer to themselves as the Rez Dogs, reached the West coast. Although the show has its fill of comedic moments,...

Editor’s Note: Spoilers for the season finale of “Reservation Dogs” Season 2 are included.
The sophomore season of Sterlin Harjo’s “Reservation Dogs” felt a lot like the final season of “Atlanta,” with an emphasis on strong bottle episodes that ultimately compelled the Res Dogs to seek their own individual identities. But the season finale, appropriately titled “I Still Believe,” ultimately drew the foursome back together to find strength and faith in their friendship. A trip to California, a meeting with white Jesus, and a trip to the beach was enough for the Res Dogs to finally close the chapter on what sparked the series in the first place and enter Season 3 with an entirely clean slate. That’s exciting.
Having Bear, Elora, Willie Jack, and Cheese have an imagined seaside reunion with Daniel (Dalton Cramer) was a strong decision. The first season mourned the immediate loss of their friend,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “Wide Net,” Episode 5 of FX’s “Reservation Dogs” Season 2, now streaming on Hulu.
After filming the fifth episode of “Reservation Dogs'” second season, Sarah Podemski went out and got matching Navajo floral tattoos with four of her co-stars. The quartet — who include her sister Tamara, “Rutherford Falls” star Jana Schmieding and Nathalie Standingcloud — took the lead on the episode “Wide Net,” which focuses on Podemski’s character Rita as she takes a girl’s trip with her longtime childhood friends to the Indian Health Services conference. It’s a bawdy and terrifically fun episode, but also quietly radical — the episode was written and directed by Indigenous director Tazbah Rose Chavez, and follows four Native women in their attempts to snag men and bust moves at the conference dance floor.

If, at its heart, “Reservation Dogs” is a story of about a group of young kids growing up and finding their way, the show’s rural Oklahoma setting is its soul. The specificity of the series’ humor and tone, its blend of the mythic and the mundane (embodied by Dallas Goldtooth’s warrior spirit with chill vibes), come through in all the ways the series captures being not just from but of this particular place. You can literally see it in how the camera captures particular details of the landscape or the wide shots of greenery intermingling with industrial decay.
But you can also hear it in how the show uses music. Certain tracks provide a sense of emotion and place that feel universally relatable, but are uniquely the show’s.

Part of what made “Reservation Dogs” one of the most exciting new shows of 2021 was the sense that anything could happen on the FX dramedy — a quality it shares with “Atlanta,” along with that series’ deceptively laidback sensibility and ability to establish a sense of place that goes beyond the geographical.
A storyline that might have seemed pleasantly aimless at first would veer into more urgent territory, and then loop back around to the amiable hijinks of the Rez Dogs themselves: Elora (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs), Bear (D’Pharoah Woon-a-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) and Cheese (Lane Factor). The mundane could turn to the surreal; the transcendent, downright goofy. This was a coming-of-age story like no other, except when it was — coursing with alienation, frustration and all the feelings that the concept of “home” stirs up. And at the center of it all was the palpable heartbreak felt by four longtime...

Season 1 of Seminole Nation showrunner Sterlin Harjo’s “Reservation Dogs” won a Peabody Award for not only being one of the very, very few authentic depictions of Native Americans on TV but also for presenting their lives in rural Oklahoma with real-world specificity while maintaining the deadpan humor shared by the show’s executive producer, Taika Waititi. Over eight episodes, Elora, Bear, Cheese, and Willie did their best to deal with the suicide of their best friend Daniel (Dalton Cramer), ending with Elora deciding to leave for California — just like Daniel wanted — while Willie Jack believed that the friends are cursed.
“Reservation Dogs” is still a comedy in Season 2, but as the Dogs seek individual identities the show shifts to a more downbeat tone. The first four episodes made available to press present a rapid descent into sadness: Willie Jack blames it all on “bad medicine,” but that same bad...

Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi — the co-creators of “Reservation Dogs” — met in the mid-aughts, and though Harjo is from Oklahoma and Waititi grew up in New Zealand, they immediately bonded over their shared experiences as Indigenous filmmakers. As Waititi’s star rose, the two remained friends, but “I never talked to him about work,” Harjo said. “I mean, enough people I think are trying to get stuff from Taika, so we just kept it as friendship.”
That changed a few years ago, though, when Waititi mentioned to Harjo that he had an overall deal with FX, were Harjo to have any ideas for a show. “That’s sort of all I needed to hear,” Harjo said with a laugh during a video interview for Variety’s Showrunners Sitdown with Kate Aurthur presented by FX.

There is a moment late in the pilot of FX’s “Reservation Dogs” that feels as though it crystallizes the entirety of the series. In it, the show’s four teenage protagonists — Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs), Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Cheese (Lane Factor), and Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) — gather together, all in dark suits, and head to their hideout. Here, they engage in a somber ceremony for their friend Daniel (Dalton Cramer), who died a year before. Each of them is smudged with sage, letting the smoke roll over them. They tearily remember their friend, arms draped over each other. It’s a moment both spiritual and irreverent, like so much of “Reservation Dogs” as a whole. And it’s the moment that Jacobs saw the world open up before her.
