Maqbool, Vishal Bhardwaj’s Best Shakespeare, Turns 21
Image
From Vishal Bhardwaj’s Shakespearean trilogy Maqbool (based on Hamlet), Omkara (Othello) and Haider (Hamlet), Maqbool is the rawest, most honest and untarnished adaptation.

Maqbool transports us to a threshold of pain and redemption hitherto unknown to Hindi cinema. Because this is Shakespeare’s Macbeth trans-located to Mumbai’s underworld, and because Bhardwaj has selected a dream cast to portray his nightmarish world of crime and retribution, Maqbool takes its emotional content beyond any other film from the genre.

The writing on the wall is so clear, coherent, and redemptive that even Shakespeare would smile indulgently at the artistic liberties Bhardwaj has taken with the original text. Maqbool opens a whole new universe of passion- play, unexplored in the original text. Bhardwaj reveals the politics of lust and passion with a sure-handedness seldom witnessed in Hindi cinema.

Hence, the King from Shakespeare becomes a doddering, paunchy underworld kingpin, Abbaji (Pankaj Kapoor...

Image
Sales

International sales agent Incredible Film has secured global distribution rights to “Amsterdamned II,” the sequel to Dick Maas’ 1988 cult classic, “Amsterdamned.” Veteran Dutch actor Huub Stapel reprises his role as detective Eric Visser, who once pursued a serial killer through the Dutch canals three decades ago, as he is brought back from retirement by a revelation that shakes him to his core. In the sequel, also directed by Maas, Visser and fellow detective Tara Lee fight against an evil that threatens them and the city of Amsterdam.

The film is a coproduction from the Netherlands’ 2CFilm and Parachute Pictures and Belgium’s Potemkino. Production is set to begin later this year, with release scheduled for 2025, in time for the city of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary.

Shiladitya Bora’s ‘Bhagwan Bharose’ trailer out
Image
The trailer unveils a nuanced narrative centred around two young boys growing up in a traditional Indian village, deeply rooted in rural values emphasizing divine intervention and religious faith. However, as the story progresses, their beliefs collide with universal truths.

Beyond questioning faith and unwavering divine belief, Bhagwan Bharose explores the complex issue of communal tension that has always been relevant across the globe. Shiladitya Bora fearlessly but empathetically tackles the sensitive subject through the minds of two innocent kids.

Notably, the performances of child actors Satendra Soni and Sparsh Suman shine, as they impeccably depict the innocence with which young minds accept or reject the dictates of adults, leading to confusion in the face of conflicting adult messaging. Veteran actor Vinay Pathak also makes a captivating appearance.

‘Bhagwan Bharose’ scripted by Sudhakar Nilmani Eklavya and Mohit Chauhan, is set for a theatrical release on October 13th. The film’s...

Film Review: Bhagwan Bharose (2023) by Shiladitya Bora
Image
Communal violence has been an issue all countries have been facing for centuries, which is, however, somewhat more intense in India still, where the clashes between the Hindus and the Muslims have resulted in a number of victims through the years. In “Bhagwan Bharose”, Shiladitya Bose tries to find out how the intolerance that leads to such incidents is born, by focusing on the lives of two kids in 1980's India.

“Bhagwan Bharose” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative

Bhola and Shambhu are two children living in rural India, in a small village. They get their teachings from Pandit-ji, a man who essentially explains the world through Hindu mythology, shaping up the kids in the village in that fashion. As they have no conception of any other alternative, the two never question what their teacher tells them. Things, however, begin to change, when Bhola's father returns to...

Alibaug shelved - Final blow for Sanjay Gupta-Sanjay Dutt collaboration
Sanjay Gupta may not really be able to bring his own life story on the big screen for wider audience with everything seemingly over for Alibaug. Launched with much fanfare almost four years back, the film is completely on the backburner, so much so that even Gupta is unsure about any further progress on it. Says a close friend of Gupta, "The film was a prestigious venture for Gupta, since it meant a diversion from the action fare being churned by his production house. He was looking at venturing into different cinema and while The Great Indian Butterfly and Pankh came in a little later, Gupta wanted Alibaug as his first take on some slice-of-life films. He was very attached to Alibaug as he wrote the film and had designed it as a quickie." However, this was the time when tragedy struck. There was rift between Sanjay Gupta and Sanjay Dutt...
