The Force of positive thinking continues to be strong with Ewan McGregor, who said at L.A. Comic Con this past weekend that he and… someone… are “exploring” possibilities for a second season of Disney+’s live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars series.
Set 10 years after the events of 2005’s Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 1 found our titular hero hiding out from the force-sensitive agents, known as Inquisitors, who were tasked with dispatching all surviving Jedi.

Ewan McGregor reprised the role of legendary Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi for the recent Disney+ series set between the events of the Star Wars prequels and the original trilogy, and the actor is still hoping to return to the Galaxy Far, Far Away for a second season.
Though some felt that following Kenobi as he left Tatooine, faced-off with Darth Vader and met a young Princess Leia was already a bit of a stretch, McGregor is adamant that there are more "stories to tell" before Obi-Wan's fateful meeting with Luke Skywalker in A New Hope.
“I loved, more than anything, getting to know Alec Guinness’ work because I was playing him as a young man,” the Scottish actor tells Variety in a new interview. “Even now with the series, that’s my personal challenge — if a take feels a bit like him, I’m happy."

Actors often have the difficult task of meeting each other on the same day that their characters are supposed to convey a sense of history between one another, so that’s precisely what makes the story of Ahsoka’s Rosario Dawson and Hayden Christensen all the more special.
In the summer of 1995, the two budding teenage actors attended drama school together at New York City’s Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, so Christensen was right there when Dawson’s career was established by way of Harmony Korine and Larry Clark’s provocative indie, Kids. Similarly, in 2002, Dawson caught up with Christensen in the middle of his Anakin Skywalker era, as they both filmed their respective roles on the set of Billy Ray’s Shattered Glass. George Lucas doesn’t think “Star Wars” is colorblind. In fact, the writer/director wants to remind audiences that the space-set film franchise is dealing with robots and aliens, not race.
While receiving the honorary Palme d’Or in the closing night ceremony at Cannes 2024, Lucas called out critics who complained about the predominantly white casting of the franchise.
“They would say, ‘It’s all white men,'” Lucas said. “Most of the people are aliens! The idea is you’re supposed to accept people for what they are, whether they’re big and furry or whether they’re green or whatever. The idea is all people are equal.”
In fact, Lucas pointed to how the only species discrimination is between humans, aliens, and robots.

Who has not felt the sting of a missed opportunity, especially when you have come so close to your big break? For O’Shea Jackson Jr., the brush with a galaxy far, far away was definitely a bitter pill to swallow—one that the fandom of both Star Wars and the actor can empathize with.
Rising to fame as an actor in F. Gary Gray’s 2015 biopic film, Straight Outta Compton, Jackson Jr.’s talent has been evident. Earlier this year, moreover, his candidness about the disappointment of losing a coveted role in Ron Howard’s 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story to Donald Glover was as relatable as it was commendable.

Disney+‘s Obi-Wan Kenobi may have debuted nearly two years ago on the streaming platform, but fans are about to get some new insight with the release of the show’s 4k Ultra HD steelbook and Blu-ray steelbook, arriving Tuesday, April 30, and TV Insider has an exclusive first look at some of the bonus content. In anticipation of the release, we have a clip unveiling the process that went into bringing Freck to life onscreen with the help of Zach Braff, who voiced the character, and puppeteer John Rosengrant, who portrayed the physical performance. Freck is a Condluran who worked as a transport driver who gave Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and young Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair) a ride until he turned on them. Ewan McGregor returned as the Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi, in his titular series, almost 17 years after his last appearance in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. The series did a decent job of entertaining the Star Wars fandom, despite the criticisms for its shoddy writing at places. However, Disney has quietly confirmed that McGregor’s show is not getting another season.
Ewan McGregor reprised his role from the Star Wars prequel trilogy in Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi took place ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and the titular character is in hiding on the planet Tatooine, looking after Luke. He is tasked with the mission of rescuing Princess Leia from the Galactic Empire, which leads to a confrontation with his former apprentice.

It’s unfortunate, but most streaming shows (and movies for that matter) never get a physical release, but thankfully, Disney has been releasing some of their most popular Marvel and Star Wars shows on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. Following in the footsteps of Loki season 1, WandaVision, and the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, Disney announced today that they will be releasing collector’s editions of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. Hurray for physical media!

If the streaming era has taught us anything, it's that even beloved shows aren't safe from the vagaries of Hollywood accounting and the hunt for profit, vanishing into the ether with a keypress. And in parallel, we're all being warned that physical media is likely to go the way of a youngling during Order 66 (too soon?) Thank goodness, then Star Wars Disney+ series Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi are joining other titles in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray form.

"Star Wars" fans have a bit of a good news/bad news situation to contend with today. The good news? It was confirmed that 2022's "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series is finally getting a 4K and Blu-ray release nearly two years after it finished its run on Disney+. Unfortunately, that very same physical media release has also quietly confirmed that the show is not getting a second season and is instead going to remain a limited series. That's not good news for those who wished to see Ewan McGregor suit up one more time as the beloved Jedi.
The upcoming Blu-ray release was announced alongside similar releases for Marvel's "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" and "Moon Knight," as well as the "Star Wars" series "Andor." All three of those shows were billed as "the complete first season" by Disney. "Obi-Wan Kenobi," on the other hand, will be released as "the complete series.

Several Disney+ TV shows, including Andor, are getting physical releases and in 4K too! More on those below.
In the age of streaming, physical media has become a bit of a hot topic. On one hand, digital libraries and streaming services mean that you’ve got an almost endless amount of films and TV shows at your disposal.
However, as Guillermo Del Toro noted, you only truly own a film if you own it physically. There are plenty of great TV shows and films on streaming services that are not available on physical media, but four Disney+ shows are getting 4K Uhd Blu-ray releases so there’s still hope.
Andor, Moon Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Falcon And The Winter Soldier have been confirmed for 4K Uhd Blu-ray and will be available from 30th April. At the time of writing, it looks like this is US only, with a UK release pending.

On April 30, Disney Home Entertainment will release on physical media four more of its streaming series, two from Lucasfilm and two from Marvel Studios.
“Star Wars: Andor — The Complete First Season,” “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi — The Complete Series,” “Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight: The Complete First Season” and “Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Complete First Season” will be released individually on 4K Uhd and Blu-ray in collectible packaging.
The news comes after Disney announced plans in February to offload its manufacturing, distribution and marketing of physical media to Sony Pictures Entertainment. Though disc sales have steadily declined industry-wide year by year, the overlap between collectors of 4k and Blu-ray discs and fans of fantasy, sci-fi and superhero genres remains significant. It’s this demographic Disney Home Entertainment is targeting, with new box art, concept art cards and steelbook packaging for all four titles.

Of all the characters introduced in the "Star Wars" original trilogy, it's hard to think of two who were, for a long time, done a greater disservice than Owen Lars and Beru Whitesun Lars. As the adoptive parents of Luke Skywalker, they're pivotal to the narrative; unfortunately, the stories that were being told post "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope" didn't require more than a brief drop-in on the Tatooine farmers.
Their best bet at extended screen time came during the prequel trilogy, but, even then, they're just humble desert folk eking out a living while the galaxy succumbs to the fascist tyranny of the Sith. So while it was nice to see a little more of the couple (portrayed in the prequels by Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse), knowing what we thought we knew of Obi-Wan Kenobi's exploits between the prequels and the Ot, it seemed like...

Daisy Ridley’s Rey is coming back to the big screen in a new “Star Wars” movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) and written by Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”). The film makes Obaid-Chinoy the first woman and first person of color to direct a “Star Wars” feature film. Previous film directors in the franchise include original creator George Lucas, Irvin Kershner (“Empire Strikes Back”), Richard Marquand (“Return of the Jedi”), J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson (“The Last Jedi”). While “Star Wars” television projects have featured female directors, most notably Deborah Chow, the movies have shut them out until now.
“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special,” Obaid-Chinoy recently told CNN. “We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.

While fan service can be useful in any given movie or TV show, Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow explained how there is one big problem with using it.
The use, or overuse, of fan service has been a contentious issue in the world of pop culture franchises, especially recent movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home bringing back characters and actors from past legacy projects as a means to appease audiences.

The use, or overuse, of fan service has been a contentious issue in the world of pop culture franchises, especially recent movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home bringing back characters and actors from past legacy projects as a means to appease audiences.

It’s not every day a director works on a series with a built-in legion of multigenerational fans ready to binge each episode and dissect every scene. Deborah Chow, who helmed all six episodes of Disney+’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” experienced exactly that.
The limited series, which Chow also executive produced, centers on the titular Jedi (Ewan McGregor) and former mentor to Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) and is set between the two “Star Wars” trilogies. Having directed two episodes of “The Mandalorian,” Chow was well equipped to immerse herself in Obi-Wan’s world The series follows Obi-Wan as he is forced out of Jedi retirement to rescue a 10-year-old Princess Leia (Vivian Lyra Blair) from Imperial forces.
In an interview with Variety, Chow details the making of the series, working alongside original cast members and newcomers and the unparalleled experience of contributing to such a long-lasting and beloved franchise.

‘Star Wars’ series ‘Obi Wan Kenobi’ director Deborah Chow, detailing her work on the series said that ‘Star Wars is like no other universe’. Directing the show was a big challenge as the show acts as a connecting point between the prequels and the original trilogy.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Deborah Chow said that balancing the two storylines was “The biggest challenge of the whole project, and that’s also why it had gone through so much development. You’re between two trilogies with these huge, iconic characters.”
“Everybody knows what happened to them, before and after, and you’re starting with a character where the public perception is that he should be sitting on that rock for 20 years. But those 20 years (between ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and ‘A New Hope’) had so much to explore on an emotional level,” she added.

With an audience that knows every nook and cranny of the Star Wars franchise, executive producer and director Deborah Chow took on a monumental challenge by agreeing to continue the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) in between the prequel and original trilogies. Development of the McGregor-led project had already become its own saga, beginning in 2017, with Stephan Daldry tackling a stand-alone Obi-Wan film. In 2019, when the feature evolved into a limited series for Disney+, Chow stepped in for Daldry, shepherding the project through numerous rewrites and Covid restrictions until cameras finally rolled in spring 2021.

“Star Wars has that special feel where it’s something that’s only heard in our universe,” notes Matthew Wood of the iconic sounds of the franchise. So with the recent work on Disney+ series in the “Star Wars” galaxy, he and Scott R. Lewis needed to ensure that the classic sound design was “going to be paid homage to as well as create new places for it to go.” The Television Academy clearly enjoyed those new places, as Wood and Lewis received Emmy nominations for sound editing and sound mixing, respectively, for both “The Mandalorian” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“It’s great being part of the toolbox,” notes Wood, the library of effects at his disposal at Skywalker Sound. “All these new directors coming in who have their vision…but they also want it to feel connected to Star Wars, and sound really is...

This story about “Obi-Wan Kenobi” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
“Obi-Wan Kenobi” seems like the kind of no-brainer, easy layup, slam dunk that is conceived quickly and executed even more quickly. We’re talking a limited series from Disney+ and Lucasfilm that followed the titular Jedi in the lonesome time between the prequels and 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope.” But it was not so fast and easy. In fact, for years, McGregor had no idea if he’d ever play the wise mentor again. “There was a constant social media noise about another Obi-Wan project, and I was constantly asked in every interview that I ever did,” he said. “Eventually I would answer truthfully and I would say, ‘Yes, I would totally be up for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi again.’”

Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the few Star Wars Disney+ series that pays direct homage to the original George Lucas film canon, versus series such as The Mandalorian ,which heavily incorporate the animated lore created by Dave Filoni.
Episodic director and EP Deborah Chow had the daunting task of taking up the baton left behind by Lucas in the 2005 Star Wars movie Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, stylistically and story wise, to tell the continuing tale of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker-turned-Darth Vader and the young twins Leia and Luke.
Chow stepped into the series to direct all six episodes after another director vacated. She acknowledges that the series was originally hatched as a stand-alone movie on the latest episode of Crew Call.

“I was a genre kid, I was a little goth kid. I was all about sci-fi and fantasy and this was always the pinnacle of everything,” reveals director/producer Deborah Chow about what leading the creative team behind “Obi-Wan Kenobi” meant to her. For our recent webchat she adds, “it definitely felt surreal in moments, for sure. I remember the very first time we were doing a camera test, it wasn’t even the proper costume. But, you know he was in something approximating it, and he walked out, and it was just like, ‘oh, my God, it’s Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and he just sort of fell so seamlessly back into the character,” she says. “They’re so iconic that it is a little crazy to have them standing in front of you. From Jedi to FBI informant; Variety has reported that Ewan McGregor is set to star in Lodi, a drama series in development for Amazon’s Prime Video.
Inspired by a true story as told in an Alta online article by Andrew Dubbins, Lodi takes place in 1977 and will see Ewan McGregor playing Lou, a car salesman who “goes from ordinary small-town citizen to FBI informant infiltrating the mafia when a key member of organized crime offers to buy his Cadillac dealership. Over the next three years, Lou finds his quest for glory tested when he becomes embroiled in the inner workings of the crime family – from fronting a multimillion-dollar operation, to becoming a surrogate son– before procuring the first-ever conviction of an infamous crime boss.” Timothy Greenberg (The Daily Show) will be the showrunner of Lodi and will executive produce alongside Ewan McGregor.

While Lucasfilm may be hitting lightspeed with three new Star Wars movies and several more TV series, there’s one show that, at least for the moment, will be left behind. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi starring Ewan McGregor won’t be in the works any time soon.
“That is not an active development,” Kennedy revealed to Variety during Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023. “But I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. There are some moments in filmmaking that must truly have been breathtaking to witness on set. For me, several of those exist within the "Star Wars" franchise. From Vader's "I am your father" line in "The Empire Strikes Back" to "The Duel of the Fates" lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jin, and Darth Maul in "The Phantom Menace," there are plenty of times when jaws must have dropped while filming. Now we can add the lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) on the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi," because apparently, the whole crew stopped to watch. (And who can blame them?)
McGregor and Christensen had plenty of experience working together from their time in the prequel movies, and they did most of their lightsaber fighting themselves. At a Star Wars Celebration 2023 panel in London, attended by /Film's Hannah Shaw-Williams, "Obi-Wan Kenobi" director Deborah Chow,...

Last year's limited Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi" was a long time in the making. Looking back on the journey during a panel at Star Wars Celebration 2023 (where myself and other members of the /Film team have been on the ground this weekend), Ewan McGregor recalled that discussions about his return began "years before we made the series ... It was going to be a movie, and then it was going to be a TV show."

"Obi-Wan Kenobi" is set in the aftermath of "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith," when its titular Jedi master has escaped the slaughter of Order 66, but lost his connection to the Force. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has been busy this week thanks to Star Wars Celebration. This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
The Mandalorian season 3 kicks things into high gear with “The Pirate.” Gorian Shard wants to take Nevarro for himself but seriously underestimates Greef Karga’s connections. When Din, Bo-Katan, and the rest of the Mandalorians show up to kick the pirates out of town, all hell breaks loose in the skies above the city as well as on the ground. The Armorer smashes a few faces in with her hammer while Paz lays down the law with his gatling blaster, with air support from Din and Bo. By the end of the episode, Gorian has nowhere to go but down.
Unsurprisingly, the lead up and the battle itself cue up quite a few callbacks and references to other Star Wars stories, including a few cameos that should get fans excited for the future of the Mandoverse! Here are all the easter eggs...

The hyper-chickens come home to roost in the latest episode of "The Mandalorian." The twenty-first chapter is called "The Pirate" and brings Gorian Shard back to the forefront of trouble for the people of Nevarro. “We should think a lot more about what women can do,” Sharon Stone told a packed ballroom Tuesday in NYC, speaking passionately about her early career; women in film; and Basic Instinct, the 1992 project that was ground breaking and traumatizing for actor.
Stone was a small-town girl who arrived in New York an aspiring actress “with my suitcase and 50 dollars,” she told the 43rd annual Muse Awards put on by New York Women in Film & Television. “I walked up and down the streets and I checked every pay phone for change that was left in so that I could possibly take the subway instead of walking all the way back to Elizabeth and Houston, where I lived in a fifth-floor walkup above a bakery in a studio apartment with my friend and … lots and lots of cockroaches.”

The shows expand on time periods we missed as each film trilogy jumped backward and forward. Star Wars is still one of the most popular things out there, and generations of fans would do just about anything to be involved in some way. That passion extends to a lot of celebrities too, including Zach Braff.
Braff recently wrote and directed "A Good Person" starring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman, the story of a young woman (Pugh) involved in a fatal car accident who forms a friendship with the man who would have been her father-in-law (Freeman). /Film's own Ethan Anderton...
