These boots were certainly made for walkin’!
On Friday evening, Nancy Sinatra celebrated Beyoncé sampling her iconic 1965 single “These Boots Are Made for Walkin'” on the Cowboy Carter standout “Ya Ya.”
“To have a little piece of one of my records in a @Beyonce song is very meaningful to me because I love her,” Sinatra wrote on X. “She represents what is great about today’s music and I’m delighted to be a tiny part of it.”

Beyoncé’s new album, Cowboy Carter, is out in the wild. In a press release, Beyoncé provided extensive insight into the making of the album and its variety of influences. Plus, read our review the album here.
Each Song Was Inspired by a Western Film
Notably, each song is its own version of a reimagined Western film, including Michael Matthews’ Five Fingers For Marseilles; James Bridges’ Urban Cowboy; Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight; Clint Eastwood’s Space Cowboys; Jeymes Samuel’s The Harder They Fall; and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Often times, they films were playing on a screen during the recording process.
Additionally, some aspects of the album’s percussion were inspired by the Coen Brothers’ ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
Beyoncé also found inspiration in traditional country, R&b, blues, zydeco, and Black folk music, as well as from her childhood trips to the Houston Rodeo.

Miley Cyrus wrote about her deepening “admiration” for Beyoncé after collaborating with her on the Cowboy Carter track “II Most Wanted.”
On social media, Cyrus raved about Bey and the duet, saying, “I’ve loved Beyoncé since long before I had the opportunity to meet & work with her. My admiration runs so much deeper now that I’ve created along side of her”
She went on to thank Beyoncé — “You’re my everything & more” — as well as “everyone who spent time making this song so special.”

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter was created over the past five years. During that span of time, the world was upended by a global pandemic and social strife; Martin Scorsese grappled with the blood on the hands of American history with Killers of the Flower Moon; and Beyoncé brought diamonds and disco to the dance floor on Renaissance. All these vastly different occurrences are components that informed the creation, imagery, and release of Beyoncé’s first-ever country album.

Shaboozey, the Nigerian-American musician with a couple prominent features on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, is embracing this big release date moment and announcing his own new album, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, out May 31.

Cowboy Carter has arrived in areas of the world where it’s already Friday — i.e., New Zealand and Australia — and more details about Beyoncé’s new album have emerged.
Yesterday’s reveal of the Cowboy Carter track list confirmed that the album featured her long-rumored cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” but the Australasian release also brings news that “Blackbiird” — stylized with double i’s on the track list — is actually a cover of the Beatles’ White Album classic “Blackbird,” a song that Paul McCartney penned in tribute to the Little Rock Nine.

Ahead of the release of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter in two days, the singer has finally shared the track list for her country-flavored follow-up to Renaissance.
In addition to the already-released singles “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages,” Cowboy Carter also has tracks name-checking country legends like Willie Nelson (“Smoke Break”), the pioneering Linda Martell (“The Linda Martell Show”) and Dolly Parton; the latter is represented with “Dolly P” and a cover of “Jolene” that Parton previously hinted at.

Reneé Rapp showed Paris how excited she is for Beyoncé’s country era on Tuesday by performing “Daddy Lessons,” Bey’s country song off of Lemonade, at L’Olympia Bruno Coquatrix.
The crowd instantly recognized the song’s acoustic guitar boogie, hollering and singing along as Rapp crooned the opening lyrics: “Came into this world Daddy’s little girl/And Daddy made a soldier out of me.” She swiveled her body to the rhythm and leaned into the mic for some of the tune’s most soulful notes. Robert Randolph was tooling around Florida when the call came. The musician, whose sacred steel slide guitar has powered his own Family Band albums and has popped up on records by Elton John, Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Thomas, Santana, and Dave Matthews Band, was behind the wheel when his office phoned to tell him that Beyoncé wanted him to record with her.
“I said, ‘Record what — you sure you have the right person?’” Randolph recalls, noting his own jam-band style. “I’m the kind who plays and plays and plays on.

Raphael Saadiq and U.K. singer Kelli-Leigh have dropped a new holiday single, “Miracle.” The classically overwrought, pop-tinged song was written and recorded for Prime Video’s forthcoming Christmas movie, Candy Cane Lane, which stars Eddie Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross.
“The song ‘Miracle’ is about, of course, a miracle,” Saadiq said in a statement. “Once you see the film, you see all these amazing things happening — a little bit of beautiful magic between a family and a mother and father. ‘Miracle’ just comes on and tells that whole story of how a family works.

A version of this story about Laura Karpman and “Ms. Marvel” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The lead character in “Ms. Marvel” is Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakistani-American girl from New Jersey who happens to be a huge fan of the Avengers and who develops special powers and becomes a superhero herself. Obviously, that gave composer Laura Karpman a lot to think about when she wrote her Emmy-nominated score (and theme music) for the series, which stars Iman Vellani as the title character.
“We wanted it to have a young, hip sound at times,” said Karpman, a Juilliard-trained composer whose other work includes the movies “Paris Can Wait” and “Resort to Love” and the TV series “Lovecraft Country” and “Why We Hate,” for which she won an Emmy in 2020. “We wanted it to have a recognizable kind of Marvel sound.

When Misty Copeland filmed the last scenes of the short Flower, she was, in her words, “very pregnant.” Not only was she blooming into motherhood, she was entering a new beginning as a producer and actor.
Flower is the first project from Copeland’s Life in Motion Productions, which she co-founded with fellow American Ballet Theatre dancer-turned-producer Leyla Fayyaz. Directed by Lauren Finerman and written by Fayyaz, the 28-minute short made its debut at the Tribeca Festival earlier this month, and it will be screened July 1 at the Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park as part of its Summer in the City series.
The film follows Rose (Copeland) as she carries the weight of providing a home, caring for her dementia-suffering mother and teaching young ballerinas in her Oakland community, which is gentrifying at an alarming rate.

Thirty years ago when Robin Thicke was 16, he recorded his first album with R&b star Brian McKnight. But the music wasn’t epic.
“[The label] was willing to put it out, but there wasn’t going to be a lot of promotion money behind it, so I said, ‘Let’s shelve it,’” he recalls.
While still recording his own music, he went on to develop his musicality by writing and producing for others, including Michael Jackson, Usher, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Jordan Knight, Brandy, Raven-Symoné, 98 Degrees, Marc Anthony, Mya, Color Me Badd, Guy Sebastian, Brownstone, Will Young, Kevon Edmonds, Ron Keating, Chante Moore and others.
But he needed to get back to making music for himself, so the early twentysomething decided he wouldn’t cut his hair until he heard his song on the radio.

There are a number of people in the annals of Hollywood history that just put a smile on your face whenever you see them. In generations past, we've been graced by the likes of Lucille Ball, Chris Farley, and Robin Williams. In more modern times, maybe Gabriel Iglesias, D'Arcy Carden, Wayne Brady, or Jason Sudeikis do the trick for you. But someone else that certainly fills that role whenever they appear on a show or in a movie has to be Gary Anthony Williams. Probably best known for playing Stevie's dad, Abe, on "Malcolm in the Middle," the actor and comedian's resume stretches a mile long due to all of the diverse projects he's been involved in. "Key & Peele," "How I Met Your Mother," "Weeds," "Archer," "The Eric Andre Show," and "Reno 911" are just a few places where you may have seen his lovable face or heard his boisterous voice.

2022 was, in my opinion, the year of Black women in music. Beyoncé, Lizzo, Tems and Nicki Minaj all topped the Billboard Hot 100, and the first three of those are among the top nominees at the current Grammy Awards. Sza’s long-awaited sophomore album “Sos” was one of the top stories of the year and broke streaming records. And other Black women like Sudan Archives, GloRilla and Latto were celebrated new artists. Amid all that, one Black woman achieved perhaps the hardest feat: Egot. Jennifer Hudson completed her Egot when she took home a Tony for producing the acclaimed Broadway show “A Strange Loop.” She isn’t the first Black woman to achieve Egot status — that would be Whoopi Goldberg — but she is the first Black female musician to do so and the second Black musician overall, after John Legend. Much has been said about Hudson’s first Egot award — her...

World-renowned ballerina Misty Copeland will star in and produce “Flower,” a short film that tells a powerful story through dance and movement, with a mission to highlight “intergenerational equity” and bring critical attention to the housing crisis in the San Francisco Bay area.
The project marks the first independently produced endeavor from Life in Motion Productions, the company founded by Copeland and writer-producer Leyla Fayyaz.
“’Flower’ represents the evolution of all my work as a performer, storyteller and activist,” Copeland said in a statement announcing the project. “As someone whose family experienced the instability of not always having a safe place to call home as a child, the issues of homelessness and not having access to basic life needs have always been important to me.”

Summer has ended, and school is in session as Quinta Brunson and Abbott Elementary taught a masterclass at the 6th Annual Black Reel TV Awards presented by idobi.
Brunson and her freshman comedy, Abbott Elementary proved that it’s just simple math as they racked up seven wins at this year’s Black Reel Television Awards. She won four awards on her own as she received Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary and Outstanding Guest Actress for A Black Lady Sketch Show. Brunson triumphed in a surprise upset of the comedy actress category over Issa Rae, the sentimental favorite, in her farewell season of Insecure.
While Glover led the pack in individual nominations with five, he was able to take home one win for Outstanding Actor, Comedy Series for Atlanta.

All good things must come to an end. After a five season run, the hit HBO series “Insecure” will make its final curtain with the airing of its series finale December 26. The brainchild of star/writer Issa Rae, “Insecure” focuses on the lives of a group of 30-something friends in southern Los Angeles, highlighting a cultural specificity of Black life rarely seen on the small screen. Through the eyes of Issa Dee (the show’s protagonist) viewers were given access to the highs and lows of a single Black woman doing her best to navigate her personal and professional relationships with wit and passion.
Rae’s journey to getting “Insecure” on the air is a study in patience and determination. The Stanford University grad first found fame with her hilarious web series “The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl” in 2011. Issa’s depictions of being “Black and Awkward” resonated with audiences...

2021 has seen its share of albums in which major artists meet huge expectations with supersize tracklists — records like Drake’s 86-minute Certified Lover Boy and Kanye West’s punishingly enormous Donda. Now you can add Alicia Keys to the list of A-list epic-makers. Keys, her eighth album, is a 26-song double-lp. But Alicia has never been one for self-indulgence, so she’s neatly divvied the project up into two distinct, easily digestible collections: Originals is, as she puts it, a set of “laidback piano vibes,” while almost all of its...

When it came to scoring the explosive montage surrounding the 1921 Tulsa race massacre in HBO’s “Lovecraft Country,” composer Laura Karpman came up with the inspired idea to adapt Sonia Sanchez’s powerful “Catch the Fire” poem as an orchestral requiem, which was central to her Emmy-nominated score with Grammy-winning composer and record producer Raphael Saadiq. This searing, operatic piece underscored the hate-filled violence, fiery destruction, and magical strength to fight back and provide a hopeful future of Black empowerment.
“[Showrunner] Misha Green licensed the Sonia Sanchez poem [to be used earlier in the episode], and it’s this beautiful, almost calm rendering, and then ours takes that and explodes it,” said Karpman (“What…If?”). “So we adapted the poem, cut it down, and synthesized the message, which is a call to action, a protest, rage.”
The music accompanies the juxtaposition of two sequences: Leti (Jurnee Smollett) imperviously walking through the burning of Tulsa with the magical Book...

Disney+ flexed its sci-fi and superhero muscles at the Creative Arts Emmys on Tuesday. “The Mandalorian” came roaring back for Season 2 to lead all craft nominations with 17, followed by Marvel’s trippy “WandaVision,” which scored 15. For good measure, Marvel’s other series, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” added four craft noms.
However, Netflix topped everyone, led by “The Queen’s Gambit” with 12 noms, “The Crown” (Season 4) with 11, “Bridgerton” with eight, “The Umbrella Academy” with four, and “Halston” with three. HBO countered with “Lovecraft Country” garnering 11 noms and the buzzy “Mare of Easttown,” starring Kate Winslet, gathering nine, among other shows. Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Season 4) returned with eight noms, and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” comedy tallied an impressive seven.
A few noteworthy craft standouts: Dana Gonzales’ brilliant black-and-white cinematography for “Fargo’s” “East/West” episode (FX), David Franco’s moody cinematography for HBO’s “Perry Mason” (“Chapter Two”), “Bridgerton...

The TV Academy music branch is clearly not impressed by big names.
None of the superstars who entered the 2020-21 Emmy competition in the music categories — including H.E.R., Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Sara Bareilles, Dolly Parton and Cher — were rewarded Wednesday when the 73rd annual Emmy Award nominations were announced.
Rather, the majority of nominees in the seven music categories were largely familiar composers, songwriters, music directors and music supervisors within the scoring community.
The biggest musical names nominated were Marcus Mumford for the theme for “Ted Lasso,” Grammy president-ceo Harvey Mason Jr. for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” jazzman Branford Marsalis for a History Channel documentary, two-time Oscar winners Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for their hummable songs for “WandaVision,” and Tony winner Marc Shaiman for a song on a YouTube special.

“I think the first thing that [showrunner Misha Green] said to us was that she wanted gothic R&b, and I don’t think there had been a genre exactly like gothic R&b,” remembers “Lovecraft Country” composer Laura Karpman about the unique sound she and her co-composer Raphael Saadiq were tasked to create for the unique HBO drama. Watch our exclusive video interview with Karpman above.
“Lovecraft Country” is set in 1950s Chicago, where a Black family must contend against Jim Crow-era racism while also trying to unravel a supernatural mystery. But the 10-episode first season spans a lot more than that. “Every single episode has its own kind of unique cinematic feel,” Karpman explains. That includes a haunted house episode, a “Raiders of the Lost Ark”-style adventure episode, and a sci-fi time travel episode. “They all have their own profiles. For the first time in Oscar history, four women are running for governor of the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Variety has learned.
Lesley Barber, Sharon Farber, Heather McIntosh and Taura Stinson are vying for the seat that will shortly be vacated by composer Michael Giacchino, who has been an Academy governor since 2015.
Laura Karpman became the first woman to serve as a music-branch governor in 2016, and she continues in that role. Charles Bernstein, who has served several terms as a music-branch governor, also continues to serve.
Canadian composer Barber is best known for her music for “Manchester by the Sea,” “Mansfield Park,” “You Can Count on Me” and “Late Night.” She recently collaborated with Mindy Kaling on the TV adaptation of “Four Weddings and a Funeral.”

Do not adjust your dial. Yes, there was a sense of deja vu in seeing the Weeknd pick up some trophies on prime-time television Thursday night, just as there was in watching him look into the camera and vow: “Like I said before, the after-hours are done and the dawn is coming.” He had uttered those some words Sunday night (without the “like I said before” part) at the Billboard Music Awards, another show that allowed him to make up for lost Grammy time in his spring victory/vindication lap.
Then again, the iHeartRadio Music Awards did have a lot to distinguish them from other such telecasts. No matter how many of these shows you feel like you’ve watched lately, you know you haven’t seen Doja Cat in a cornfield with a synchronized team of space aliens.
Neither had we actually seen the Weeknd performing a duet with Ariana Grande yet.
