Jason Derulo Is an Audacious, Occasionally Ridiculous Pop-r&b Smoothie on ‘Nu King’
Image
You’d be forgiven for being surprised that Jason Derulo hadn’t released an album since 2015’s Everything Is 4. In the nine years since that full-length’s release, Derulo has kept himself in the public eye, whether through his Tiktoks or his steady stream of singles; his fizzy collaboration with the New Zealand producer Jawsh 685 “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat” even reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2020, thanks in part to a clutch assist from BTS.

That gap helps explain in part the length of Nu King, Derulo’s fifth album.

Image
Indian singer Harrdy Sandhu prophesizes that Punjabi music will take over the world (if it hasn’t already).

The renewed interest in Punjabi music is evident with back-to-back appearances of South Asian artists at crowd-magnet international music events such as the Coachella (Indian singer Diljit Dosanjh became the first Punjabi artist to perform) and at the Juno Awards, where Indian Canadian artists like Tesher and AP Dhillon have left their marks.

“I’m so happy that Punjabi music is going global,” starts Sandhu, who is basking in the success of his new EP Pleasures.

Speaking to Et Canada’s Jed Tavernier, Sandhu talked about when he drove a taxi in Australia and realized the genre was widely popular among locals.

“I still remember in 2008, I was in Australia. I used to drive a taxi.

Tesher reveals why his songs have a mention of Shah Rukh Khan
Image
From ‘Young Shah Rukh’ to ‘Jalebi Baby’ and his latest banger track ‘Jacquemus’ — all have a mention of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and rapper and producer Tesher has finally revealed the reason behind it.

Asked if he’s a big fan of the superstar, pat came the reply from Tesher to Ians: “Of course.”

When asked why his songs have a mention of the superstar, Tesher, whose real name is Hitesh Sharma, said: “I finally-broke my streak with this one ‘Jacquemus’. Shah Rukh is a big inspiration. He’s been nothing but very very kind to me. Lovely man and honestly an inspiration to all of us.”

Tesher, who was influenced by his Indian heritage as well as his Canadian upbringing, “for sure” hopes for a Bollywood debut but with the right project.

He added: “It just has to be the right project. It just has to be the...

‘Jalebi Baby’ Hitmaker Tesher Was Told To ‘Become A Punjabi Singer To Make It Big,’ But Had Other Plans
Image
Regina-born singer Tesher, of “Jalebi Baby” fame, is getting candid about Asian representation in music and the significance of social media in today’s age.

“Jalebi Baby” was originally a remix of Justin Bieber’s “Yummy” with Bollywood song “Jalebi Baby.” However, after its success on TikTok and Instagram, Tesher revised the piece by removing “Yummy” and adding extended original lyrics in Punjabi and English.

The song became a viral sensation, topping the Shazam charts in 25+ countries and amassing over 100 million combined global streams in a few months. In 2022, Tesher performed “Jalebi Baby” with Simu Liu at the Juno Awards. It was also featured in an episode of the Iman Vellani-led Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel.”

TikTok puts a spotlight on its #APIFamily of Asian and Pacific Islander creators
Image
In the United States, May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (Aapi) Heritage Month. To celebrate, TikTok is rolling out a series of initiatives that will honor its own community of Asian and Pacific Islander (Api) creators. Its efforts will include a central hub called #APIFamily and an inaugural Api edition of the app’s Visionary Voices list.

Visitors who search for the #APIFamily hashtag can browse videos from Api creators big and small. In the past, TikTok has launched similar hubs to spotlight its Black, Hispanic, Indigenous, and Jewish communities during those groups’ respective heritage celebrations.

Across all of those initiatives, TikTok has created a playbook that will inform its Aapi Heritage Month plans (TikTok is using the acronym Api rather than Aapi to recognize the global nature of its user base.) The #APIFamily hashtag will be applied to the latest installment of TikTok’s Livestream Series, which is...

Image
Known for the popular 2000’s track such as ‘Angle Eyes’ and ‘Let’s Work it Out’, popstar Raghav Mathur released of his latest soundtrack ‘Desperado’ with ‘Jalebi Baby’ hitmaker Tesher.

The song has Raghav’s signature style, his yet-so-fresh vocals and lyrics and the same amaranthine appeal.

Commenting on the release of ‘Desperado’, Raghav said: “This track is really close to my heart as it brought me back to a studio with Mushtaq, who has produced many of my songs during the early days of my career as an artist.”

“When you go back to work with someone after a considerable gap, you are always questioning whether you can recreate the magic or not. I am beyond thrilled that with Desperado, Mushtaq and I have got the chance to take things to a whole new level. It is indeed overwhelming to see your idea turn into a banger of a reality.

Does This Bollywood Reference in ‘Ms. Marvel’ Hold Key to the Series?
Image
“Ms. Marvel” Episode 2 contains a Bollywood bombshell.

Marvel’s new Disney+ series wonderfully weaves in South Asian culture with Pakistani-American Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), but Episode 2 dials the Bollywood up to 100 — and may hold the key to where this series is heading.

Freshly superpowered Kamala arrives at school with a new spring in her step, confident enough to correct a coach who mispronounces her name and dodge overzealous basketball players in the hallway. Her unflappable strut is cut short when she runs into Kamran (Rish Shah), a handsome and charming new student.

Suspiciously handsome and charming.

I have refrained thus far on this website from explaining just how deeply seen and attacked I feel by “Ms. Marvel,” but watching Kamala get ready to ruin her life for the first attractive brown boy in school hit home a little too hard. Kamran is English which is illegal for crushes and extremely fraught for children of colonialism!

‘Ms. Marvel’ Review: Disney+ Brings Us the Cosplay Superhero We Needed
Image
It’s downright audacious that Marvel is now making TV shows about Avengers superfans, but despite that thoroughly meta invitation to egomania, real-life MCU diehards are in for a treat with “Ms. Marvel.”

First introduced in a 2013 comic by Sana Amanat, “Ms. Marvel” is the story of Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), a nerdy New Jersey teen obsessed with Captain Marvel who ends up gaining her own superpowers and moniker. The Disney+ adaptation comes from creator and head writer Bisha K. Ali (executive story editor on “Loki“), with executive producers Adil and Bilall. Despite the young protagonist, “Ms. Marvel” is as universal as “Spider-Man” or “Hawkeye” or any Disney+ series before it.

Episode 1 introduces us to Kamala, content with her friends, family, and phantasmagoria as she daydreams through class and uploads YouTube videos about her favorite superhero, Captain Marvel. Her dearest ambition in life is to get her driver’s license...
