A bit of directorial zest, a serviceable lead and some Dirty Dozen energy are the only weapons in the arsenal of this otherwise plotless movie
Here’s yet another low-budget, straight-to-streaming British second world war flick: just as much of a men-on-a-mission throwback as last month’s War Blade, but a few notches more competent thanks to a more compact setup, occasional bursts of galvanic film-making from director Bill Thomas, and a grimier tone that is more Dirty Dozen than Saving Private Ryan.
It’s backs-to-the-wall time; Sergeant Mason (James Oliver Wheatley) and his not-especially-crack commando squad bungle a raid on a Nazi convoy and find themselves running across Normandy from an ever-growing pack of Wehrmacht. Retreating to a shabby farmhouse, they dig in for the imminent siege, despite the reluctance of Belgian owner Julien (Allan Relph), who doesn’t fancy being labelled as a partisan. Julien is also hiding a secret there,...

Andrew McCarthy has written and directed Brats, and his documentary about The Brat Pack arrives later this year. More details within.
Tearing up the 1980s, both on and off cinema screens, was a bunch of young performers who earned themselves the collective name of The Brat Pack.
The group was made up of the likes of Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Bob Cryer and Andrew McCarthy, and they sprung to prominence particularly in 1985 and 1986. That’s when that group made up the cast for two hit movies, namely St Elmo’s Fire (pictured) and Pretty In Pink.
Other films followed, and the tabloid interest was intense, leading writer David Blum to give them the Brat Pack name. Andrew McCarthy reflected on all of this in a memoir he penned called Brats, released in 2021. Now, Deadline reports that the story is being turned by McCarthy into a documentary.

A 79-year-old Welsh composer is shutting down some wild rumours.
On Saturday, Sir Karl Jenkins was in the audience at King Charles coronation, and he soon became the subject of a conspiracy theory that he was actually Meghan Markle in disguise.

It had previously been announced that the Duchess of Sussex would not be attending the coronation alongside husband Prince Harry, remaining in the U.S. with the couple’s children.
Twitter users jokingly speculated, though, Markle had attended the ceremony, donning a wig, moustache and sunglasses to disguise herself.

But the composer took to TikTok this week to dispel the rumours, telling followers, “I understand there has been a lot of interest in me since I appeared at the coronation of King Charles III.”

As The Adventures of Maid Marian begins it is the year 1199 in Merry Olde England. Robin is off fighting with King Richard. Marian is hiding out in a nunnery, occasionally sneaking out to poach a deer for starving villagers.
Then the word arrives, the king has died and his troops, including Robin, will be returning. Overjoyed, Marian rushes off to meet him. But she’s not the only one who wants to welcome him back. William De Wendenal the former Sheriff of Nottingham wants to revisit ye olde tymes with him as well.
As many times and ways as the tale of Robin Hood has been told I honestly can only think of one version that’s told it from Marian’s point of view, the BBC comedy Maid Marian and Her Merry Men.
