Karanveer Mehra, who stars in the play ‘Lights Out’, said that it is unfortunate that the issues in the narrative raised decades ago, are still more relevant than ever. The teleplay is based on Manjula Padmanabhan’s acclaimed work. In 1986, when playwright Manjula Padmanabhan’s play ‘Lights Out’ opened in Mumbai, it created a sensation because it was based on the eyewitness account of a horrific crime.
Talking about the same, he said: “This teleplay mirrors the fact that when we remain silent, we are complicit in injustice. The fact that many such incidents continue to take place, is very disturbing.”
The teleplay unfolds in the apartment of a middle-class couple who have invited some friends over. Their cheerful evening gets disrupted when they overhear an assault in a nearby compound. The events that follow illustrate not just collective apathy but also voyeuristic curiosity.

Politics has never really been a favoured subject for Bollywood filmmakers. In a country where mainstream cinema never really got out of the grip of censor woes and protest groups, the Hindi film industry by and large avoided cinema that spoke of politics and politicians.
Bollywood cinema has naturally hesitated looking at Indian politics and political themes while setting up fictional drama.
There have been cases in the past, after all, when themes pertaining to politics faced trouble. Kissaa Kursee Kaa was banned from release during Emergency owing to its satirical depiction of democracy in the country. Aandhi was banned a few months after release because it was felt that the film bore shades of Indira Gandhi and her politics. Parzania, depicting a fictional story against the backdrop of the 2002 Gujarat riots, was banned in that state, and so was Firaaq. Inshallah Kashmir won a National Award, but was denied release,...

Section 375
Starring Akshaye Khanna, Richa Chadha, Meera Chopra, Rahul Bhat
Directed by Ajay Bahl
A very pretty Maharashtrian girl steps out of her humble home to go to her workplace when a neighbour shouts out, ‘Ae Madhuri Dixit.’
In the next ten minutes this girl Anjali, played by the lovely and effective Meera Chopra, will be raped by her boss, an arrogant film director (played with agonizing efficacy by Rahul Bhat) who speaks to his associates on the set as though they were vermins and parasites born to serve and be abused.
In the next five minutes this jerk of a filmmaker will be arrested and tried for rape.
But did he really commit the crime? The question hangs thick in the narrative, circling the tense courtroom drama provocatively, letting us know that when it comes to sexual allegations, nothing is what it seems. Madhur Bhandarkar will vouch for that.

The #MeToo movement arrived late in India. But it is a juggernaut that is here to stay, and is having a measurable effect on production.
Aamir Khan Productions is to withdraw from a film where one of the filmmakers is accused of harassment in a 2014 case that is currently sub-judice. “This is an opportunity for the film industry to introspect and take concrete steps towards change,” actor/producer Aamir Khan and producer Kiran Rao tweeted in a joint statement. “For far too long women have borne the brunt of sexual exploitation. It has to stop.”
The movement kicked off with actress Tanushree Dutta accusing veteran actor Nana Patekar of harassment on the sets of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleasss” in 2008, an allegation she made then and again last week. This was followed by harassment allegations against Phantom Films founding partner Vikas Bahl by an employee. That led to the dissolution of the company.

One of the most frustrating aspects of covering festival and indie films has been the limited access for a wider audience – very often review comments run along the lines of: “Tell me where I can see this!” 2015 was a year that finally saw some great shifts in this, with a number of festival films finally getting a theatrical release – some of them films that had been on the festival circuit for a couple of years, some of them hot off the 2015 festival rounds. Audiences for both festival and indie films are small, but they’re growing, and access to this year’s “best of” selection should be easier for interested viewers. 2015 was, indeed, a great year for these films – enjoy our choices for Festival and Indie Bests!

For all the perverts out there who think it’s their birthright to peer up women’s skirts, here’s a film that peers right into women’s souls…seven of them, all so grandly scripted they seem to have walked into the film from our lives.
Every one of the seven female protagonists played, let me tell you, by actresses who were born to be their characters, is so sharply written, I came away thinking of them as people whose lives I’d like to know more about. (Ah, us prying Indians, whether it’s skirts or lives, we just love to intrude.) Sadly by the time Pan Nalin’s exceedingly persuasive film ended, one of the ladies was no longer with us. Such is life.

Pan Nalin’s Angry Indian Goddesses is being heralded as “India’s first female buddy movie,” which is such a welcome change for Hindi cinema. But it’s also an overtly feminist film that balances its themes with such witty dialogues and powerful performances.
Nalin introduces to an ensemble of friends who are routinely the subject of sexist micro-aggressions at work and in life. There’s Joanna (Amrit Maghera) an Anglo-Indian who’s struggling to make a name for herself in Bollywood and suffering through B-films to make a living; Pam (Pavleen Gujral) a housewife who has business ambitions but thwarted by a unconvinced husband; Mad (Anushka Manchanda) a singer whose albums aren’t getting picked up; Freida (Sarah-Jane Dias) a photographer struggling to balance her art with a commercial job; Laxmi (Rajshri Deshpande) a maid who’s taking her harassers to task; Nargis (Tannishtha Chatterjee) an activist who’s...

A celebration of female friendship and freedom, the film promises to confound genre expectations and tackle issues of gender and society in contemporary India. "Angry Indian Goddesses" follows newly betrothed Frieda (Sarah Jane Dias) as she gathers her six closest friends (including Sandhya Mridul, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Amrit Maghera) for her bachelorette party on the eve of her wedding. Relying heavily upon improvisational dialogue, the film is loaded with humor and pathos as the women embark on a "roller-coaster of girl bonding."
