Irvin Kershner dies at 87 years of Age!
The director of one of my favorite movies of all time has passed away today. The AP reports that Kershner, renowned for making the second Star Wars film, “The Empire Strikes Back”, has died in Los Angeles, his goddaughter Adriana Santini told the AP on Monday. He was 87 years old. Kershner, who besides the 1980 sci-fi epic also directed Sean Connery as James Bond in “Never Say Never Again” (1983) and Peter Wellerin “Robocop II” (1990), died at home after a long illness, said Santini, who lives in France. Born in Philadelphia in 1923, Kershner trained as a musician and in photography before starting making documentaries and then feature films.
Irvin was a graduate of the University of Southern California film school, and he was one of the first directors to be mentored under Roger Corman with his 1958 directorial debut Stakeout on Dope Street. Social alienation and...

As if the death of legendary funnyman Leslie Nielsen wasn't enough of a punch to the gut to end the long Thanksgiving holiday, yet another influential talent has left us. Most casual Star Wars fans know George Lucas is responsible for the sci-fi legacy (both good and bad). However, more seasoned fans of the franchise know that it was Irvin Kershner who directed The Empire Strikes Back, a movie largely considered to not only be the best movie in the series, but one of the best sequels ever made. Sadly, the Afp news service reported this morning that Kershner passed away at his home in Los Angeles at 87 years old. More below. His goddaughter Adriana Santini confirmed his passing after a long battle with some sort of illness. Though Kershner's directing resume isn't as massive as other more renowned filmmakers, he did have his hand in a couple of franchises.

He died in hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was being treated for pneumonia, his agent John S Kelly said.

It brings me no pleasure to be writing back-to-back articles reporting on the deaths of two well-known industry individuals, but such is the occasion. It's been reported that Irvin Kershner, director of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, passed away in Los Angeles on Monday morning at the age of 87. His goddaughter Adriana Santini reported the news to Afp.
On top of Empire Strikes Back, his widely seen films include the somewhat unofficial James Bond flick Never Say Never Again and RoboCop 2.
The best thing I can say about Kershner is that he made the best Star Wars film of the six and what he brought to Empire Strikes Back has was never duplicated in any of the four installments that followed.
One thing people that don't watch a lot of movies love to ask is, "Why do you want to watch a movie more than once?" Sometimes it takes...
