Edit
Considered to have the best curveball in Negro Leagues history.
Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Committee on Baseball Veterans in 2001.
He served as a scout for the Chicago Cubs at the time of his death.
In exhibition games against white major leaguers, he posted six wins against one loss.
Pitched for the Austin Senators (1931), Monroe Monarchs (1932-1935), and Kansas City Monarchs (1936-1948) in the Negro Leagues.
Served as long relief for his fellow teammate and Hall of Famer 'Leroy 'Satchel' Paige'.
Smith played in six consecutive East-West All-Star games from 1937 to 1942.
Smith was an exceptional hitting pitcher.
He advised Kansas City Monarch owner J.L. Wilkinson to acquire
Jackie Robinson
as the team's shortstop (which Wilkinson did).
