Walatiram Varma was born in 1915 as Walatiram Chawla in the Punjab Region of British India. He is one of the founders of Varma Films, best known for Sohag Raat (1948), Patanga (1949) and Badal (1951). Waltiram was married to Sheila, with whom he had three sons (Biloo, Vijay & Dilip) and five daughters (Darshana, Nirmal, Kanta, Usha & Kusum). He died in 1982 in Bombay, India.
