After spending years as a respected leader of the sovereign mutant nation Krakoa, Cyclops is back on the run. With Krakoa destroyed and humanity ready to oppress mutants again, Cyclops has gone back home to Alaska to refresh and regroup.
And yet, things have never been better for Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops. The upcoming From the Ashes relaunch will force the X-Men back into the world after the end of Krakoa in the Fall of X storyline, with a new X-Men book with Cyclops in the lead.
“We wanted to start with Cyclops and wanted to bring him back to Alaska,” X-Men writer Jed MacKay tells Den of Geek during an exclusive interview at SXSW. “And from there we started thinking what his mission would be moving forward because he’s Cyclops, he always has the mission.”

This article contains Marvel’s What If…? Episode 1 spoilers.
Marvel’s What If…? episode 1 is here, and it’s a fascinating glimpse at a version of the MCU we never expected to see. “What If…Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?” is an action-packed riff on the events of Captain America: The First Avenger, showcasing a world where Peggy Carter, not Steve Rogers, was the recipient of the super soldier serum, and took on Nazi forces and the hordes of Hydra.
Want to delve deeper into this version of the MCU? Or just looking for Marvel references you might have missed? Well, we’ve got you covered…

The new and official trailer for “the Snyder Cut” of Zack Snyder’s Justice League landed last weekend. And while it showed off a ton of new footage, including a brand new Steppenwolf design and our best looks yet at other evil denizens of Apokolips like Darkseid, Desaad, and Granny Goodness, it didn’t quite solve all the mysteries or reveal all the surprises still waiting in the new film. Fans will continue to have to wonder whether a human Green Lantern will make an appearance for a little longer, and there was no footage of Martian Manhunter.
But a new Justice League #59 variant cover from DC Comics, with art by none other than Jim Lee, seems to have given us our first full look at what J’onn J’onnz, the Martian Manhunter, will look like in the movie. Director Zack Snyder has long confirmed that Martian Manhunter was...

If you’re assembling a Justice League roster, names like Superman, Batman, Flash, Hawkgirl, and Aquaman spring immediately to mind. But what about Black Adam, Hippolyta, or new hero Naomi? When Brian Michael Bendis reunites with artist David Marquez in Justice League #59 in March, your perception of what a Justice League team can be might change.
Mr. Bendis told us what to expect about this new and unexpected Justice League.
Den of Geek: This is an interesting roster. It’s a very different kind of Justice League roster than we’ve seen in a long time.
Brian Michael Bendis: I was genuinely delighted by the reaction to the roster. I was ready for the pushback. But people seemed really into it. I think I have to thank Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for laying the tracks for Black Adam so nicely. I thought it was going to be more of a pushback,...

DC Comics released a first look at its March comics, the first batch after the end of the multiverse-spanning Dark Nights: Death Metal and the pause-everything company wide reset Future State, and from our first glimpse of the solicitations, the big changes coming in Future State look like they might be sticking around.
With the sheer volume of change that DC underwent in the last year – new distributors, new release days, personnel changes, cancellations and FanDomes included – there was a lot of speculation about the future of the comics line. This first batch of solicitations provide an interesting answer to that speculation. It looks like, post-Future State, DC’s changing everything. By keeping some things the same.
Here are our biggest takeaways…

I know every comic book publisher loves a ‘special’ issue, an ‘anniversary’ issue, or a ‘reached a big number’ issue, but at first glance a 144 page monster book for issue 1027 of Detective Comics seems a bit of a stretch. Longevity, sure, but we just had a whole raft of anniversary specials did we not? Then you realise. Detective Comics #27, back in 1939, was not only the very first appearance of Batman, but became the title that led to National Periodicals eventually becoming DC Comics. They liked the series so much they named a company after it. So, in comic book terms, Detective Comics #27 is probably the second most important published, beaten out only by Action Comics #1. I seem to be reviewing a whole lot of 80 Page Giants of late, most of which have been appearing from DC. That’s not a complaint mind you. I’m still an avid collector of the DC Dollar Comics issues from the late 1970′s and early 1980′s, so something about DC and oversized comics just feels right. Besides, there is a very good reason for this one. One of DC’s most famous characters, or franchises if you are a corporate lawyer, is celebrated his 750th issue. Not all in one continuous run of course, but in the many volumes and stop starts of recent times, Flash has crossed the exclusive line of characters with a 750 issue run. That’s something to celebrate. So how do you celebrate? You pull in writers and artists old and new. Your Geoff Johns,...

Mariko Tamaki, co-writer of critical darlings and Eisner-lauded books like This One Summer and Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me, and solo writer of books that more people should be talking about, like Supergirl: Being Super, was announced as the new regular writer of Wonder Woman. “Wonder Woman was the hero I grew up with, she was my little-kid-living-room-cosplay,” she said. “I have always wanted a golden lasso and an invisible jet, and I feel like now, writing Wonder Woman, I’m one step closer.”
Joining Tamaki on the first arc is the ridiculously good Mikel Janin. Janin comes to Wonder Woman off of career-best work on Batman, and is perhaps more famously known as the artist behind that scene in Grayson where Midnighter recognized Dick Grayson through his spy tech because of his butt.
The new arc kicks off with Diana getting herself together after her battle with the Four Horsewomen,...

Joshua Williamson tells us why the Batman Who Laughs chose particular DC superheroes to turn evil.
DC's new Batman/Superman book is more than just a World's Finest team up story. Instead, it's a meditation on what makes Batman and Superman so different from each other, and a celebration of the shared values that make them heroes and friends. But it also explores the nature of heroism in the DC Universe, by exploring the very opposite of that with the villainous Batman Who Laughs, and his quest to "infect" various DC heroes with a toxin that turns them into evil versions of themselves.
Batman/Superman comes from the creative team of Joshua Williamson and David Marquez, and it's one of the most important titles in the DC line at the moment. Of course, what's the point of having evil superheroes running around if you don't have amazing visuals to go with them,...

What does The Batman Who Laughs want in Batman/Superman? And how does it fit in the larger DC Universe? We've got an exclusive first look.
Everybody knows that Batman and Superman are much more effective as teammates and friends than they are as enemies. Sure, the two most recognizable characters in the DC Universe might not have the same methods, and they certainly don't always see eye-to-eye, but they're the World's Finest team for a reason, complementing each other's many strengths and keeping each other honest.
And while DC long ago retired the "World's Finest" title, they do look for any excuse to put Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne in a book together. The latest comes in the form of Batman/Superman by Joshua Williamson and David Marquez, which will see the pair take on the creepy, nihilistic evil of the Batman Who Laughs, who has...

Batman and Superman investigate the lair of The Batman Who Laughs and find a Jokerized DC hero.
The Batman Who Laughs may be the culmination of ten years of Scott Snyder's Batman work, but the hot-selling, utterly terrifying comic that has a Jokerized, parallel dimension Batman going toe to toe with the prime Bruce Wayne is also the launching point for a new Batman/Superman team up book, and DC shared a preview of its first issue today.
The promotional materials and solicit text for the book so far have talked about the marquee pairing fighting a new "Secret Six." In the preview, we find out something shocking: it's not a gang of villains, bickering and doing espionage together, as previous versions of that team have done. No, here it's heroes infected by the Joker toxin that Batman is currently fighting off in the pages of...

Scott Snyder takes us inside the dark weirdness of The Batman Who Laughs
Want to feel old? Scott Snyder’s breakout Batman story, “The Black Mirror,” was released almost 10 years ago. He was a rising star when he got the gig on Detective Comics, and that book led to him being handed the reins on the New 52 relaunch of Batman and turned him into the character’s defining voice of the era. Snyder's time with Greg Capullo on Batman helped him redefine Bruce Wayne’s world, landed him the multiverse-reshaping Dark Nights: Metal gig and eventually saw him get to steer the entire ship of the DC Universe in the pages of Justice League.
And while he’s busy building new multiverses and starting a war across time between the Justice League and the Legion of Doom in one book, he’s also penning a culmination of sorts to his Batman stories.

We don’t know what fate awaits the talking trash panda in this month’s Avengers: Endgame, but it seems that Rocket’s comic book career is about to hit a major snag.
Marvel Comics has announced that an upcoming arc of the Guardians of the Galaxy series will be titled “The Death of Rocket Raccoon.” When promoting comics coming up this July, the House of Ideas revealed the shocking title of the next storyline to come from Donny Cates’ recently-rebooted Guardians book.
Interestingly, Rocket hasn’t actually been featured as a member of the team in this line-up, with only Star-Lord and Groot from the movies retaining their places. However, the character does play a part in the Avengers: No Road Home bi-weekly series.

Maybe all of the recent hoopla surrounding the next Guardians of the Galaxy film being delayed and possibly retooled due to the firing of James Gunn has something to do with the books being shaken up, but I like to think there’s less pressure on Marvel Comics to have their products reflect the movies in recent years. After all, there’s a reason why we refer to the literature as “source material.”
As you may remember, the House of Ideas has spent the past few months teasing a fresh team lineup to be featured in a new ongoing series written by Donny Cates and illustrated by Geoff Shaw. And like I expected, reactions proved to be divisive because, as stated earlier, it’s not exactly reflective of what’s been enjoyed on the silver screen. But if you’re like me, you dig seeing oddball additions to super groups every now and then.

Despite Thanos currently being cock of the walk on the live action side of things, the Mad Titan hasn’t had as much luck in the comic book realm as of late. Long story short, Requiem, formerly Gamora, beheaded her father and now the universe is one purple despot lighter.
As one would expect, there’s a power vacuum of sorts being left behind, and it appears as though the House of Ideas won’t wait much longer before filling the void. In fact, the soon-to-be relaunched Guardians of the Galaxy series looks to be the book to watch if you want to keep up with this situation.
We say that because Marvel Comics have now dropped their March 2019 solicitations online, and the one corresponding to Guardians of the Galaxy #3 warns of “a new Thanos rising.” Like many of you, I’m left simultaneously intrigued and perplexed.

A month ago, Marvel revealed that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be rebooted top to bottom following the fallout of the Infinity Wars event. Writer Donny Cates and artist Geoff Shaw were announced to be relaunching the team’s comic book series and Cates teased that it would feature an entirely new line-up of characters on their roster.

Now, the whole lot has been revealed, handily compiled together in a gorgeous cover for the first issue, courtesy of artist David Marquez. The artwork bears the ominous question “who will stand when the last Guardian falls?” and can be seen down below.
