I’m not entirely sure why, but DC have always been far better than Marvel with anthology books. Possibly because of their extended history, that they just have that much more material than Marvel had, and could make extra money by packaging old, sorry ‘classic’, reprints with the odd new story or framing sequences. The recent run of DC anniversary issues have also seen them put out some rather good 100 page anthologies, but now with all new material, though with very definite nods towards source material of the past. Which brings us to this ‘Guidebook’. Odd title in a way, as it’s appeared too far down the line into the event to be a guide for anything, but it’s certainly a good opportunity to fill in gaps in the main book, and to give short, sweet glimpses at some of the peripheral characters.

All that is about to change. With the current Archie vs. Predator II and Jughead's Time Police titles weaving together the narrative threads that unite all permutations of these characters,...

Welcome back to another installment of Panel Discussion – this time featuring a rundown of my picks of the Top 30 comics released in February 2018. This is part two, a countdown of books 15-1… But first the caveats:
First and foremost this is simply my list and with that comes a great deal of subjectivity. Any art form is a subjective medium and taste plays a major role. So if you feel my rankings are way off you probably have a legitimate point. My hope is to simply to highlight great books that deserve attention. We too often focus on the negative so why not take some time to celebrate the positive. Since this is my list that also means I can only rank issues I have actually read. There may be a book that is in your top five that does not make the cut. Please let me know. I try...

With characters such as Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn currently enjoying so much mainstream popularity, we could say that today’s news couldn’t have come at a more opportune time, but let’s be honest, female heroes and villains have been on an upswing in the comic book medium in recent years – it’s just that the perfect storm that’s happened to come together certainly helped matters.
What’s more is that we should all be amazed by how the collectibles market is influencing what we read. A few years back, the Bombshells line of statues floored everybody, providing much inspiration for the cosplay community and later spawning its own comic. More recently, we received word that the journey would continue with Bombshells United, which was great and all, but I was really expecting Gotham City Garage to have followed suit. Funnily enough, DC was planning such a title,...

You’d be forgiven for thinking the X-Men comics young Laura is carting around in this weekend’s Logan were real; featuring classic Marvel villains like Sauron, and ’80s and ‘90s-appropriate takes on the team’s costumes and catchphrases, they look at least a little like the genuine article. In point of fact, though, the comic books are fakes, created by Marvel artist Dan Panosian specifically for the film. Now, Panosian has offered fans a closer look at his work on the film, including the interiors he drew in case the insides of the non-plot-relevant comics were ever shown on screen:

Remember the comic book from the newest Logan trailer? We know who drew it now.
The recent trailer for Logan featured, as you probably know, comics whose identity was a bit of a mystery. Not least because they're great looking comic pages that signal some weird, weird timeline stuff for the upcoming movie.
Putting an end to the speculation as to who was behind said pages, Joe Quesada, the artist behind Batman: Sword Of Azrael and X-Factor #87 and also the Chief Creative Officer at Marvel posted on his Tumblr that he penciled the header pic, as well as others that will be used in the film. Dan Panosian then went over his linework to give it a '90s ink and coloring style'.
These pages look outstanding, and even in early stages they look very different from Quesada's other work. Quesada's style is distinctive, exaggerate,d and muscular.

While it didn’t matter so much when the first X-Men movie was released, fans have really rallied against the utilitarian black leather costumes worn by the heroes in Bryan Singer’s early films. That’s been reflected in the team getting some proper superhero costumes at the end of both X-Men: Apocalypse and Deadpool, but what about Logan?
With a very different setting from previous movies set in this world, it’s clear the threequel won’t be your normal superhero caper, but one of the trailer’s most intriguing moments came when Wolverine could be seen reading an X-Men comic book featuring himself and the likes of Cyclops and Rogue wearing colourful costumes. Fans are now understandably excited about the prospect of seeing Logan in his classic yellow and blue, and artist Joe Quesada has today released the page seen in the trailer along with some interesting insight...

One of the coolest moments in the final trailer for Logan came when Wolverine could be seen leafing through one of X-23’s X-Men comic books. It was here that we finally got to see the hero wearing a version of his classic yellow and blue costume, and while he was quick to dismiss the stories as fiction, fans are now wondering about the chances of seeing the costume in live-action.
Time will tell if that happens, but some details have now surfaced about who was responsible for creating the comics seen in the trailer. It turns out that Fox was unable to use an actual X-Men comic book due to rights issues, so Hugh Jackman asked artist Joe Quesada (who was responsible for some artwork commissioned by President Obama not too long ago) to come up with a totally original one.
He was joined by inker Dan Panosian, and in a new interview,...

Add up all the Deadpool series (creatively), and April’s Deadpool #45 marks Wade Wilson’s landmark 250th issue! How is he celebrating? He’s dying! The end of the line comes for all, even one such as Deadpool, but he’s not gone yet! Say your condolences with this new look at the colossal-sized series finale.
First, Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn and Mike Hawthorne serve up a 30-page main story, as the villainous Ultimatum finally makes their move. They’re coming for Deadpool – every last one of them! It’s going to be a bloodbath, but Wade’s going to go down swinging.
Then – Gerry, Brian and Scott Koblish bring you a long lost, full length Deadpool tale. Remember when Wade got a hold of the Infinity Gauntlet? No? Don’t worry – that’s what the story is for. And yes, you should be worried Wade Wilson is in possession of nigh-infinite cosmic power.

Conan/Red Sonja #1
Written by Gail Simone and Jim Zub

Published by Dark Horse Comics
Near the beginning of Conan/Red Sonja #1, there is an evocative image of a lion and panther battling in the arena for the pleasure of the prince of Koth. However, the panther and lion end up devouring their handlers instead of each other. This is a powerful metaphor for the comic as a whole as both Conan and Red Sonja do violence with their words and swords. Gail Simone and Jim Zub excel at writing biting comebacks for both heroes, and artist Dan Panosian uses a variety of storytelling device from using a “bar” effect to split a larger panel into smaller ones while retaining to a classic two page spread worthy of Marvel Conan artist Barry Windsor-Smith. This combination of inventive storytelling, caustic wit, and a...

DC Comics will be releasing a wave of one-shot steampunk variant covers for many of their current New 52 titles in February, featuring some impressive art from artists such as Dave Johnson, Klaus Janson, Howard Chaykin and more. At first we we’re hoping that DC was cooking up a line-wide Elseworlds-style event (eg, Gotham by Gaslight), but that doesn’t appear to be the case after all. We’re now hoping this may be a test from the publisher to see how many fans would like to see more of these characters placed in a Victorian-era setting. There certainly seems to be a growing number of steampunk-inspired cosplayers at comic book conventions across the country – perhaps the publisher has taken notice.

So Infinity (w. Jonathan Hickman a. Jim Cheung, Dustin Weaver) concluded what’s been an interesting if not exactly mind-blowing run. The Avengers return to earth to sort out Thanos and his nasty mates, Maximus of the Inhumans cracks wise and saves the world and Rocket Raccoon makes an all-too brief (like, one panel appearance). The main point of the event seems to have been to launch the Inhumanity series – which to be fair, does look kind of interesting – but beyond that, I’m not sure what we’ve learnt. None of the characters seem to have radically changed from what I, as a pretty casual Marvel reader, understand to be their default personality setting to be. What happens to Thanos (and I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that yes, something happens to the primary antagonist in the last issue of a comic book series) is cool,...
