This post contains spoilers for the season 3 finale of "Ted Lasso."
"Ted Lasso" was adept at delivering the thrills of a sports drama, with the fall and rise of an underground English football team, while also telling a beautiful story about community, mental health, self-improvement, and being open about emotions.
After three seasons, "Ted Lasso" is seemingly, apparently, as far as we know, done and over. After two very strong seasons, the final season was a very mixed bag, with a lack of focus thanks to longer episodes that dragged on, a sermon-of-the-week format that seemed to take away from the joy of earlier seasons, and a misguided football story that was too obsessed with winning — until it wasn't.
This is (kind of) a football show, of course, meaning the characters' careers and stories carry on after the end of the finale. We know Ted Lasso's career at AFC Richmond is over,...

One of the best moments of “Ted Lasso” Season 3 came in this week’s “La Locker Room Aux Folles” and if you looked away for 10 seconds you’d have missed it. During halftime of a Premier League match, right after Isaac (Kola Bokinni) has gone into the stands to fight a homophobic AFC Richmond supporter, the captain hands his band to Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) to take his spot in his absence. Puncturing the seriousness, Jamie (Phil Dunster) and Sam have a playful back-and-forth about who should have it. Jamie playfully gestures to send the armband his way. Sam flips him off with a smile.
It’s a reminder of what “Ted Lasso” hasn’t been in recent weeks. Season 3 has largely become a bundle of ideas and thought exercises cobbled together in place of having any bigger plan. There was a throughline in the show’s opening season about gaining...

Not every story decision made for season 3 of "Ted Lasso" has been a success. Frankly, some of them don't make any sense to me at all: Hinging Rebecca's arc on a meeting with a psychic remains absolutely baffling; I have yet to understand what was going on with Shandy's brief employment period; and I grow more nervous about the trajectory of the Keeley-Jack romance by the day.
Yet other aspects of the season have been beyond perfect — like Jamie teaching Roy how to ride a bike or the team coming together to clean up Sam's restaurant. It's a mixed bag of a season, but there are still plenty of episodes to go and if Ted has taught us anything, it's to always focus on the positives. And on the subject of what's going really well, one of the season's biggest standouts has to be James Lance as everyone's favorite...

Warning: The following contains spoilers about Season 3, Episode 5 of Ted Lasso.
Any other week, the surprise retirement of AFC Richmond’s star player would be a big effing deal. But coming out of a Ted Lasso episode that features a half-dozen other major developments, at least one of which seems to hint at the series’ endgame, Zava’s exit feels relatively small.

Is it just me, or does every character on Ted Lasso need a hug?
Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 5 continued to put them all through the wringer as they searched for meaning in different ways.
We'll start with Rebecca because she's been quite literally getting signs following her meeting with the psychic on Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 3.
Hannah Waddingham plays every aspect of Rebecca to perfection, but she was on another level throughout "Signs" as Rebecca went through every emotion in her quest to make sense of the psychic's teases.
The saddest part of Rebecca's journey is that she didn't believe anything the psychic said, so whenever something happens, she's more curious than ever.
The "sh-t- in nining armor" of it all has been the topic of much debate since the trip to the psychic, so you can only imagine my surprise when she bumped into John Wingsnight and his new fiance muttered that phrase.

[This story contains spoilers for “Signs,” the fifth episode of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
During a press day for Ted Lasso’s third season, The Hollywood Reporter asked co-creator, executive producer and actor Brendan Hunt about whether Richmond’s honeymoon period with superstar Zava (Maximilian Osinski) would wear off.
Hunt’s answer: “I mean, you’ve seen the show before. You know how it goes.”
In “Signs,” the show’s fifth episode of season three, it went. Or rather, he went: After firing up the team before a match with powerhouse Manchester City — by basically repeating the same idea Jamie (Phil Dunster) offered up moments before — Zava no-shows for the match. (“Maybe he’s dead,” Ted muses on the sideline. “He fucking better be,” Roy growls.) He later explains to his social media followers — ahem, “believers” — that he’s retiring to focus solely on his family and his avocado farm.

Perhaps redemption is possible, after all?
During Wednesday’s Ted Lasso — the fourth episode of Season 3 — Nathan makes not one, but two attempts to apologize to Ted for how he left things at the end of Season 2. His first attempt, which is interrupted by Rupert, comes before AFC Richmond faces off against West Ham United, when Ted and Nate share an elevator at London Stadium. The second attempt comes after Richmond blows the match, triggered by security cam footage of Nate tearing Ted’s “Believe” sign in two. Nate spots Ted by the exit, but before he has a chance to confront him,...

Early into Wednesday’s Ted Lasso, former foes Roy Kent and Jamie Tartt share something of a full-circle moment.
After finding out that Roy and Keeley broke up, Jamie, of all people, is the first to try and console Roy. He attempts to give his assistant coach a hug, who responds with a full-body shove.

Are the longer episodes hurting the quality of this once-hot Apple TV+ series?
Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 2 juggled many storylines, but it's disconcerting that a significant chunk of the scenes felt like they could have been cut to make a leaner installment.
Ted Lasso has been straddling the fine line between comedy and drama for a while now, and "Chelsea" was the first time I wanted the series to pick a lane and stick with it.
We'll start with Keeley because she has the most to lose out of all the characters.
All eyes are on her as the face of her PR company, so it's unfortunate she felt the need to bring Shandy into the mix.
Shandy strikes me as someone who prefers hard partying to focusing on her career, and that was perfectly reiterated when she urged Keeley to use the company credit card to have mimosas at work.

[This story contains spoilers for season three, episode two of Ted Lasso.]
The second episode of Ted Lasso’s third season puts the title character on the sidelines for much of its running time, focusing instead on Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Roy (Brett Goldstein) and a couple new additions to the AFC Richmond locker room.
One of those newcomers is someone the show has previously introduced: Trent Crimm (James Lance), no longer of The Independent. Trent pitches writing a book about Richmond’s return to the Premier League for the season, which Ted agrees to over the strenuously mimed objections of Rebecca, Higgins (Jeremy Swift) and Keeley (Juno Temple).
Most of “(I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea” — taking its title from the Elvis Costello and the Attractions song — takes place, however, not at Richmond’s home base but at Stamford Bridge, the home of top-flight club (in the Lasso-verse, if not the current real-life Premier League table) Chelsea. Richmond, sporting a new,...
