Oscars Telecast Highlights Crafts a Year After Sidelining 8 Categories
Image
From the opening montage of the 2023 Oscars, the Academy signaled an effort to place attention on the crafts, following last year’s widely criticized decision to present eight categories prior to the live telecast and instead including clumsily-edited excerpts from those presentations in the live broadcast.

As part of this change, a film camera was featured on the Dolby Theatre stage as part of the cinematography presentation, which was introduced with a nod to Gregg Toland’s lensing of Citizen Kane, while host Jimmy Kimmel carried a boom at one point, offering a salute to sound pros. Additionally, short clips were introduced showing the recipients of the Academy’s SciTech Awards, which were presented on Feb. 24, including Gordon E. Sawyer Award winner, lens designer Ian Neil.

Those with a keen eye in the audience at the Dolby might have noticed that during the presentation of film editing Oscar, the woman...

‘You’re Beautiful’ Singer James Blunt Gets a New Documentary: ‘I’m Not Sure Letting Them Film This Was a Good Idea’
Image
James Blunt, the British singer-songwriter behind the romantic anthem of the aughties, “You’re Beautiful,” is the focus of a new documentary.

The project, which is jokingly described as “the story of an ageing, British pop star, still fighting for relevance some 17 years after his star momentarily twinkled,” will follow Blunt all across Europe during his 2022 Greatest Hit Tour.

The doc, which is directed by Chris Atkin, will delve into Blunt’s backstory, from witnessing the genocide of the Kosovo War as a British Army soldier to recording “Back to Bedlam,” the biggest selling album of the 2000s in the U.K. The film will also detail how Blunt endured a harsh backlash following his meteoric success, but “tweeted his way back” by becoming a keen social commentator online.

Blunt, who has 2.2 million followers on Twitter, often responds to trolls online with salty, self-deprecating remarks about his career.

Described as “Spinal Tap” meets “Alan Partridge,...

‘Bros: After The Screaming Stops’ Producer Lorton Entertainment Readies “‘Spinal Tap’ Meets Alan Partridge” Doc On British Singer James Blunt
Image
Bros: After the Screaming Stops producer Lorton Entertainment is next turning the camera to cult British singer James Blunt in a doc billed as “Spinal Tap meets Alan Partridge.”

The unnamed behind-the-scenes doc from director Chris Atkins is billed as a “brutally honest story of a painfully self-aware, endlessly touring musician, for whom persistence eventually prevails.”

The synposis reads: “This is the story of an ageing, British popstar, still fighting for relevance some 17 years after his star momentarily twinkled. No one has a more extraordinary story than James Blunt. The soldier-turned-singer has one of the most inspiring trajectories in the history of music.”

Blunt served under NATO during the 1999 Kosovo War before releasing the chart-topping single ‘You’re Beautiful’ and album Back to Bedlam, which remains one of the UK’s biggest sellers of all time. Despite the single and album’s mega-popularity, both were widely panned by music critics...

‘Who Killed The Klf?’ Doc Boarded By Film Mode Ahead Of Fantastic Fest Premiere
Image
Exclusive: Who Killed the Klf?, a feature documentary about the cult and mysterious band, has been picked up for world sales by Clay Epstein’s Film Mode Entertainment ahead of its debut at Austin’s Fantastic Fest this weekend.

Directed by Chris Atkins, the film looks into the band, which famously burned a million quid on the Scottish island of Jura, and later disappeared as an act and removed their music from catalogues. The pic will chronicle how the duo – Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty – shot to the top of the pop charts as one of electronic dance music’s progenitors from their punk rock origins in 1970’s Liverpool.

Director Atkins worked with the pair to tell their story. Pic was produced by Nicky Bentham, with Richard Thompson of Fulwell 73 and Ian Neil serving as executive producers.

“Film Mode is thrilled to be introducing Who Killed the Klf?...
