We won't know until we see more of season 2, but everything we do know indicates that the show will be even more ambitious in its second outing. This is not a game; a second season of Netflix's hit series "Squid Game" is officially happening! More than eight months after the show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, confirmed the exciting news during a Nov. 9, 2021, interview with The Associated Press, Netflix officially gave season two the green light on June 12, 2022, with the release of new teaser art featuring a close-up of an animatronic eye on Twitter and Instagram. And over a year later, on June 28, the streamer announced the new season's stacked cast - plus who from the original cast will return.
The first season of the show was packed with surprises, life-or-death situations, and moments that had viewers at the edges of their seats. So what can we expect from the follow-up season? When the history books are written to include modern world cinema, one name that is sure to be mentioned as a titan not just of Korean or Asian cinema, but cinema in general, will undoubtedly be that of South Korean maestro Lee Chang-dong. In a career spanning more than 25 years now, starting in the early days of the Korean New Wave all the way till the modern day, Lee has made a mere six feature films, almost all of which are generally considered among the finest. In their 2022 edition, the Jeonju International Film Festival held a retrospective of the celebrated director’s works, which included 4k remastered versions of all of Lee’s feature films, along with the world premieres of his new short “Heartbeat” and “Lee Chang-dong: The Art of Irony”, a new retrospective documentary by French director Alain Mazars.

Poetry
Written by Lee Chang-dong
Directed by Lee Chang-dong
South Korea, 2010
There are the aesthetic qualities of language – phonic, visual, etc. – and then there are the experiences and impulses that language is used to express. Poetry has, as an art form, traditionally sought to erase the distance between the two, to construct an artifice of language that will purely convey some aspect of the human condition – a notion that has been increasingly abandoned in our age of irony. When we collectively embraced air quotes, we embraced the distance between language and impulse, devaluing the idea of emotional expression.
Lee Chang-dong’s Poetry is a meditation on that distance. Resting on a series of layered tensions – between beauty and grief, between words and feelings, and between existence and memory – the film profoundly asks what seems like a deceptively naive question: Can acts of expression still be meaningful?

Title: Poetry Writer-director: Lee Chang-dong Starring: Yun Jung-hee, Lee David, Kim Hira, Kim Yong-taek, Ahn Nae-sang A former high school teacher and novelist turned filmmaker, South Korean Lee Chang-dong has, with movies like Peppermint Candy, Oasis and Secret Sunshine, crafted a body of work ripe with mesmeric understatement, shining a light on quotidian pain and delight, and locating meaning as much in how his characters don’t react to certain situations as in any more active plotting. His latest film, Poetry, the Best Screenplay award winner at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, centers on a sixtysomething grandmother who, after learning two bits of potentially devastating news, tries to center herself and find release...

An old woman experiences the first stages of dementia, takes a poetry class, and is coerced into paying , literally , for her grandson’s sins. The real poetry in South Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong’s terrific and devastating fifth feature (following 2007′s “Secret Sunshine,” whose star Jeon Doyoung won the Best Actress award that year at Cannes) is in how little justice mere words do to convey how intelligent and sweetly profound this leisurely, potentially cheerless narrative becomes as a cinematic experience.
For her first acting role in a decade and a half, Yun Junghee charms as 66-year-old Mija, a free-spirited Han River suburbanite with old-fashioned flair and an insatiably curious nature that make her come off like a kook to those who don’t share her glass-half-full worldview.

I've never been a big fan of poetry. I don't get much out of reading it and Lord knows I ain't no good at writing nothing poetical (Note: I may be exaggerating slightly for comedic effect). So I can relate to Mija, the subject of Korean director Lee Chang-dong's beautiful new film "Poetry." A grandmother in her mid-60s, Mija goes to the doctor for an arm ache and leaves with the knowledge that her recent forgetfulness is the early stage of Alzheimer's disease. Slowly losing her vocabulary, she tries to rebuild it by joining a poetry class at the local community center. Try though she might, she can't find "poetic inspiration."
Mija's teacher gives her class two suggestions to guide their work. "To write poetry," he says, "you must see well. The most important thing in life is seeing," Later he adds that writing poetry is "about discovering...

There is an undeniable charm to Lee Chang Dong’s Poetry which examines the life of an elderly woman attempting to learn the art of writing poetry before she is consumed by old age and ultimately Alzhemiers. It’s a sobering tale of finding beauty in a violent and disturbing world, as a tragic murder involving a high school girl sets the landscape for the story. There is also an undeniable similarity between Poetry and this year’s earlier Korean film Mother in that they both focus on an older motherly figure struggling to come to terms with their lives. And while Mother dwells more on the suspense of the murder mystery, Poetry is very different in tone opting for a deeper emotional resonance and lyrical subtext. The end result is a both a beautiful and tragic story of attempting to understand life’s complexities at its most simplest.
