Senators probe Redstone, Paramount amid Trump lawsuit
Image
(Still frame via promotional video, courtesy Paramount Global / CBS News & Stations; Graphic by The Desk)

A trio of U.S. Senators have expressed concern that Paramount Global may have violated federal anti-bribery laws with respect to the entertainment giant’s ongoing lawsuit involving President Donald Trump.

The letter was sent on Tuesday by Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Ron Wyden of Oregon and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who suggested that Paramount “may be engaging in improper conduct involving the Trump Administration in exchange for approval of its merger with Skydance Media.”

The contents of the letter were first reported by the Wall Street Journal early Tuesday afternoon.

Paramount is in the middle of an $8 billion merger with Skydance Media, a transaction that will provide a financial windfall to Shari Redstone and her company National Amusements, which is Paramount’s largest shareholder.

Paramount is also in the middle of a civil...

Don’t Expect Loyalty From Gayle King After CBS Fights $20 Billion Lawsuit Because of Kamala Harris Interview (Report)
Image
CBS has seen hard days, but none like the ones it is going through currently. President Donald Trump is suing the network for $20 billion over a 60 Minutes interview with 2024 then-Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

While many anticipate a resolution of the lawsuit soon, things are not looking good for Gayle King. Having been with the network for 12 long years, there is an indication that her time with CBS might be over, as she is looking for an exit before things for the network get possibly worse.

The 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris, aired in October 2024, has spiraled into a $20 billion lawsuit from President Donald Trump against CBS and its parent company, Paramount Global, sparking a firestorm of controversy.

Paramount Could Violate Anti-Bribery Law if it Pays to Settle Trump’s ‘60 Minutes’ Lawsuit, Senators Claim
Image
Three prominent U.S. senators warned Paramount Global and controlling shareholder Shari Redstone that they might be breaking a federal anti-bribery law if they agree to settle President Trump’s lawsuit against CBS over a “60 Minutes” segment.

In a letter addressed to Redstone that was posted publicly, Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) cited reports that Paramount has been in settlement talks with Trump’s lawyers in the case. The Trump suit, which seeks at least $20 billion in damages, alleges CBS’s “60 Minutes” deceptively edited an interview with Kamala Harris and thereby violated a Texas consumer protection law. Paramount and CBS have argued that they did nothing wrong; in a motion to dismiss Trump’s suit Paramount called the legal action “an affront to the First Amendment” that is “without basis in law or fact.” CBS News has maintained that the...

Democratic Senators Warn Paramount’s Shari Redstone That Trump Lawsuit Settlement May Violate Federal Bribery Statute
Image
Three senators have sent a letter to Paramount Global’s Shari Redstone warning that a potential settlement of Donald Trump’s $20 billion lawsuit against CBS may violate federal bribery laws.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-ma), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-vt) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-or) wrote that “Paramount appears to be trying to settle a lawsuit that it has assessed as ‘completely without merit,’ and moderating the content of its programs in order to obtain approval of this merger. Under the federal bribery statute, it is illegal to corruptly give anything of value to public officials to influence an official act. If Paramount officials make these concessions in a quid pro quo arrangement to influence President Trump or other Administration officials, they may be breaking the law.”

Redstone is non-executive chairwoman of Paramount Global and controlling shareholder.

The senators cite 18 U.S.C. 201, which prohibits giving anything of value to a public...

CBS Likely to Cast New Eye on ‘Evening News’ After Wendy McMahon Exit
Image
Expect new headlines soon out of “CBS Evening News.”

After being overhauled in major fashion earlier this year, the venerable evening newscast, which has direct ties to Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather, is likely to get some new twists and tweaks. The program, according to two people familiar with CBS News, is seen as being at the of a to-do list for Tom Cibrowski, the executive recently named to lead CBS News and whose decision-making has even more potency after his direct superior, Wendy McMahon, announced on Monday her plans to leave the company.

The show has lost a significant chunk of its viewership since a new format was unveiled in January that relies on the dual-anchor team of John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, and a story mix that hinges more closely on enterprise and feature reporting than it does on breaking news. For the five-day period starting May 5, “CBS...

Wendy McMahon resigns from Paramount’s CBS News and Stations
Image

Wendy McMahon has announced her resignation as President of CBS News and Stations, the local television broadcasting division operated by CBS and owned by Paramount Global.

Her resignation was influenced by a “challenging” business environment made more complicated by Paramount’s ongoing battles with the Trump administration and one of its own shareholders, Shari Redstone, over news and editorial content.

“Championing and supporting the journalism produced by the most amazing stations and bureaus in the world, celebrating the successes of our shows and our brands, elevating our stories and our people,” McMahon wrote in a note to employees on Monday. “It has been a privilege and joy.”

McMahon continued: “At the same time, the past few months have been challenging. It’s become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward. It’s time for me to move on and for...

Wendy McMahon Resigns as Head of CBS News: “Company and I Do Not Agree on the Path Forward”
Image
Wendy McMahon is exiting CBS, stepping down as the executive in charge of CBS News, the CBS TV stations and the company’s syndication arm.

“It’s become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward,” McMahon said in a memo to staff on Monday. ”It’s time for me to move on and for this organization to move forward with new leadership. I have spent the last few months shoring up our businesses and making sure the right leaders are in place; and I have no doubt they will continue to set the standard.”

McMahon’s exit comes amid a tumultuous moment for CBS News, which is in talks with President Donald Trump about resolving a lawsuit he filed against the network over an interview conducted with Vice President Kamala Harris on its flagship newsmagazine 60 Minutes.

60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens resigned earlier this month,...

CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon Resigns: ‘The Company and I Do Not Agree on the Path Forward’
Image
Wendy McMahon, a longtime defender of “60 Minutes,” is leaving her role as president of CBS News and Stations. The departure comes less than 24 hours after Sunday’s season finale of the esteemed news program, which has become a target of the Trump administration.

McMahon said in a memo “it’s become clear the company and I do not agree on the path forward,” according to the New York Times. She also described the tension between herself and CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, as “challenging.”

This is another major development in the ongoing confrontation between CBS’ news division and the Trump administration. It all started with a “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris. In December of 2024, Trump filed a $20 billion lawsuit against CBS and its parent company Paramount Global, alleging that the network deceptively edited the interview with his political rival. Both CBS and “60 Minutes” have maintained that...

Wendy McMahon Resigns As CEO Of CBS News And Stations: “It’s Become Clear That The Company And I Do Not Agree On The Path Forward”

Updated, with additional comments and Trump lawyer statement: Wendy McMahon has announced her resignation as the president and CEO of CBS News and Stations, the latest departure from the network amid the pending acquisition by Skydance.

McMahon wrote to staffers, “Championing and supporting the journalism produced by the most amazing stations and bureaus in the world, celebrating the successes of our shows and our brands, elevating our stories and our people … It has been a privilege and joy.

CBS News Chief Wendy McMahon Steps Down, Citing Conflicts With Paramount
Image
Wendy McMahon, a TV executive who aggressively pushed CBS News and TV stations into new business operations and formats during a tumultuous era under parent company Paramount Global, said Monday she would step away from her role.

She is the second senior executive overseeing the company’s news division to leave unexpectedly as Paramount pursues a settlement with President Donald Trump over a what many legal experts believe is a flimsy lawsuit alleging that the venerable newsmagazine “60 Minutes” tried to mislead voters with an interview of former Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Bill Owens, the executive producer of “60 Minutes” announced his decision to leave last month, citing interference from the corporate parent.

Her departure will likely be seen as yet another sign that Paramount intends to settle its legal conflict with Trump, even if doing so will undermine “60 Minutes” and the news division.

McMahon felt in recent...

Jon Stewart and ‘The Daily Show’ Just Declared War on Uncontested Local Elections
Image
Following an intervention, delay and course-correction from the Paramount brass, Jon Stewart and The Daily Show are finally launching their initiative to increase participation in local elections. Meanwhile, Paramount will continue its campaign to decrease its own participation in the President’s furious tweets.

The Daily Show’s new initiative, titled, “InDecision: Take a Seat,” is part of the show’s push to “shine a light on local and state offices that you might not even know are out there, and encourage You to throw your hat in the ring.” Or so says the landing page of the recently re-homed InDecision: Take a Seat website. As Stewart explained in tonight’s episode of The Daily Show, 70 percent of all elections held in America last year were uncontested, and the long-time comedic political commentator wants to help Americans who have an interest in civil service gain access to valuable electoral resources provided by nonpartisan,...

Peter Bart: Having Survived Decades Of Enemy Attacks, ‘60 Minutes’ Must Now Defy A New Phalanx Of Powerful Legal & Political Foes
Image
Don Hewitt, the brilliantly contentious founder of 60 Minutes, saw to it that the most impactful characters in key segments turned out to be the “heavies.” Hewitt wanted his audience to understand the threat posed by “bad guys” — hence an ambush interview or some other dramatic confrontation.

During his 37-year reign, Hewitt never would have imagined the list of alleged “bad guys” presently casting a shadow over his show. They include the principal stockholder of CBS, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and a major sector of the legal establishment. Welcome to the Trump media universe, Don.

Last weekend 60 Minutes sent a defiant signal to the prospective “heavies,” who include Shari Redstone and FCC chairman Brendan Cox as well as The President. The nation’s highest rated TV news show announced it would not back off its coverage nor support financial appeasement of its adversaries. The show’s boss, Bill Owens,...

Paramount Still Sees Skydance Deal Closing First Half Despite Noise; Streaming & Sports Buoy Q1
Image
Paramount Global said it expects the merger with Skydance Media to close in the first half of 2025 despite chatter around the deal, which requires a greenlight from the FCC.

“Completion of the Skydance transactions is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. The transactions are anticipated to close in the first half of 2025. Until then, Paramount continues to operate in the normal course of business,” the company said in its first-quarter earnings release with solid numbers topping Wall Street forecasts on most metrics.

Paramount has, in fact, been anticipating a first half close since the multi-part transaction was announced last summer — before President Donald Trump sued CBS and 60 Minutes, and before the FCC under chair Brendan Carr began reviewing a complaint against the network and newsmagazine by a right-wing group. Longtime 60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens quit last month citing corporate editorial interference. Carr stressed this week...

FCC Chief Insists Donald Trump CBS Lawsuit Unrelated To Paramount-Skydance Review — “We Are Staying In Our Lane”
Image
Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr insisted today that its review of the proposed merger of Paramount Global with Skydance is not connected to a lawsuit by President Donald Trump against CBS and 60 Minutes.

“We are staying in our lane,” Carr told CNBC’s David Faber at the Milken Global Conference in LA.

“There are three separate things that are going on. President Trump has his lawsuit against CBS that’s in state court. Haven’t read that complaint. I don’t know what all the complaints are. There’s a transaction before us, and there’s a 60 Minutes complaint. The last two have to do with the FCC. The first one doesn’t.”

Trump sued over the news magazine editing of an interview with former Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The dispute is being mediated. Shari Redstone, Paramount’s controlling shareholders, is said to be anxious to close...

‘60 Minutes’ Continues Hard-Hitting Segments On Trump With Look At His Attacks On Law Firms; Guest Compares Potus Actions To A Mob Boss
Image
A week after calling out CBS parent Paramount Global over the show’s journalistic independence, 60 Minutes on Sunday ran another hard-hitting segment on Donald Trump, this time over the president’s attacks on law firms.

Trump’s executive orders have threatened to prohibit some of the nation’s largest firms from security clearances, federal agencies and even courthouses, as the president cited their work on behalf of his perceived enemies. The orders even threatened to cancel the government contracts of the firm’s clients.

The show’s correspondent Scott Pelley noted at the outset of the segment that it was “nearly impossible to get anyone on camera for this story because of the fear now running through our system of justice.”

One who did was Marc Elias, a attorney for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign and then, in 2020, someone who successfully challenged Trump’s claims of election rigging.

Nine firms...

Shari Redstone’s Impossible Choice: She Can’t Save Both ‘60 Minutes’ and Paramount Global
Image
Shari Redstone is no doubt familiar with “The Godfather, Part II.” It is, after all, one of the best-known films in the library of Paramount Global, the company she and her family control. Redstone probably doesn’t have time to watch the 1974 classic this week, but no matter. She’s living it.

“The Godfather, Part II” focuses on the difficult choices made by protagonist Michael Corleone, who opts to preserve his family’s illicit business empire instead of tending to the needs of the actual members of his family. He spends all his time jockeying with rivals and fending off competitors, and in the process loses his spouse and kills off his brother, whose weaknesses give enemies a chance to wreak havoc.

Redstone is no crime boss, but she faces similar wrenching decisions about doing what’s best for members of the Paramount family and what’s best for her own family business.

‘60 Minutes’ Schedules Another Segment On Trump: His Targeting Of Law Firms
Image
CBS News’ 60 Minutes plans to air a segment on Sunday about Donald Trump’s targeting of law firms with his executive orders, the latest sign that the show has not backed way from reporting on the president despite a lawsuit and concerns of corporate interference.

The show’s description of the segment is, “On the campaign trail, President Trump vowed to wield the power of the presidency to go after his perceived enemies. Now in the White House, Trump is using executive orders to target some of the biggest law firms in the country that he accuses of “weaponizing” the justice system against him.”

Correspondent Scott Pelley is reporting the story. On Sunday, he closed out the show by noting the departure of the show’s executive producer, Bill Owens, and calling out CBS’s corporate parent, Paramount Global.

“Bill made sure they were accurate and fair,” Pelley told viewers.

The Best Films Playing in New York and Los Angeles Repertory Theaters in May 2025
Image
April showers bring May flowers, but May is bringing a whole bouquet of cinematic gems to transition from spring into summer. Perhaps the most timely of all the options listed below is Michael Mann’s biting takedown of American corporatization and its effect on mass media, “The Insider.” Nominated for Best Picture at the 2000 Academy Awards, the film follows “60 Minutes” producer Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino) as he works to cultivate and protect a tobacco company whistleblower (Russell Crowe) who may be carrying the most vital public health story of the 20th century.

Unfortunately, when the legal team behind “60 Minutes” parent company CBS catch wind of the story — amidst a key merger with Westinghouse Electric no less — they do everything they can to keep the news piece from running lest it upend a possible deal. For those paying attention to current affairs, the narrative will have echoes to a...

‘60 Minutes’ Goes on Alert: How the News Program Is Grappling With Paramount and Trump
Image
Did Donald Trump break “60 Minutes”?

Scott Pelley on Sunday night smashed the “in case of emergency” glass — something “60 Minutes” staffers hope they never have to do.

In a rare move that put the inner workings of “60 Minutes” on full display to the public at large, Pelley on Sunday night discussed last week’s surprise exit of Bill Owens — just the third executive producer in the program’s history and its guiding light since taking the role in 2019 — and the pressure the staff felt was being put on the long-running newsmagazine by Paramount Global, parent of CBS News. His appearance teed up one of the most dramatic examples in recent memory of media conglomerates finding themselves at odds with news divisions that are supposed to be independent at a time when they are worried about meddling from the Trump administration.

“Paramount began to supervise our content in new ways. None of our stories has been blocked,...

Has ’60 Minutes’ Run Out of Time? Shari Redstone’s Painful Predicament
Image
That ticking noise that begins every 60 Minutes segment? Turns out that’s not a stopwatch. It’s a time bomb.

At least that’s how it’s sounding lately, like the illustrious citadel of American broadcast journalism is on the brink of blowing up. Last night, in the latest shudder suggesting an imminent explosion, correspondent Scott Pelley ended the show with a “Last Minute” segment that all but declared open rebellion against 60 Minutes’ corporate overlords at Paramount and raised a fist in solidarity with longtime executive producer Bill Owens, who just days earlier had bolted CBS in protest over what he called editorial meddling by management.

“No one here is happy about it,” Pelley informed viewers, perched on a stool before a backdrop of the program’s iconic ticking timepiece. “But in resigning, Bill proved one thing — he was the right person to lead 60 Minutes all along.”

FCC Chairman Says He Hasn’t Yet Reviewed Public Comments In ‘60 Minutes’ Investigation, Says “All Options Remain On The Table”
Image
FCC chairman Brendan Carr told reporters Monday that he has not yet reviewed public comments in the agency’s investigation of the way that a CBS 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris was edited, giving little indication that a resolution was imminent.

“Personally I have not reviewed those comments at this point, but at some point we will get to in terms of reviewing the comments and making a final decision,” Carr told reporters.

Carr also did not address Donald Trump’s urging that he impose “the maximum fines and punishment” on the network, although the FCC chairman said that “all options remain on the table. That continues to be an open investigation.” He did not rule out fines or even a move to revoke a network station broadcast license, that latter of which he acknowledged it would be “a pretty high bar” for him “to go down that path.

Watch ’60 Minutes’ Call Out Paramount’s Editorial Interference in On-Air Rebuke After EP’s Departure
Image
On April 22, Bill Owens, only the third executive producer of “60 Minutes” in its 57-year history, abruptly resigned from his position, citing editorial interference from management at CBS. And now, the news magazine itself has aired a stinging rebuke of that interference, delivered on-air by host Scott Pelley as the closing segment of its April 27 broadcast.

The network’s parent company, Paramount, has been trying to clear the way with the Trump administration’s Department of Justice for its Skydance merger. Following Trump’s lawsuit against “60 Minutes” for what the now-President and his attorneys had suggested, with little basis, was a flattering edit to a 2024 interview with his opponent Kamala Harris, Paramount appears to have become worried it might not be smooth sailing for the merger after all.

Therefore, in January, CBS introduced a new layer of management to add extra supervision in vetting stories across CBS News’ portfolio of shows.

’60 Minutes’: Scott Pelley Rebukes Paramount Bosses in Jaw-Dropping Segment
Image
60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley shocked viewers on Sunday night (April 27) when he used the final minute of the show to call out his bosses at Paramount following the departure of the program’s executive producer, Bill Owens. In a segment titled “The Last Minute,” Pelley spoke directly to viewers, informing them that Owens stepped down from 60 Minutes after 26 years last week as Paramount Global, the parent of CBS News, looks to merge with Skydance Media, a deal that reportedly requires the green light from federal regulators under the Trump administration. “In tonight’s Last Minute, a note on Bill Owens, who until this past week was executive producer of 60 Minutes. He was our boss,” Pelley said. “Bill was with CBS News for nearly 40 years, 26 years at 60 Minutes. He covered the world, covered combat, the White House; his was a quest to open minds, not close them.” He continued,...

‘60 Minutes’ Calls Out Paramount for Executive Producer’s Exit in Rare On-Air Rebuke
Image
All seemed normal in the first 98% of Sunday’s broadcast of “60 Minutes” on CBS. But the remaining 2% may have shocked viewers.

In the show’s “Last Minute” segment, correspondent Scott Pelley told the audience of the venerable newsmagazine that Bill Owens, the program’s executive producer, opted to depart last week as Paramount Global, the parent of CBS News, tries to navigate its way to a merger and after it had placed more scrutiny on “60 Minutes” editorial processes while the show investigated war in the Gaza region and how President Trump’s policies affected Americans.

“Paramount began to supervise our content in new ways. None of our stories has been blocked, but Bill felt he lost the independence that honest journalism requires,” Pelley said. “No one here is happy about it.”

The segment offered a rare instance of “60 Minutes” personnel criticizing the parent company’s management of the newsmagazine,...

Can ’60 Minutes’ Prized Independence Survive a Major Deal?
Image
A thing to know about 60 Minutes, is that it has always, always, prided itself on being independent. Not just independent in the way that most news programs are independent, but independent even from the rest of CBS News.

While the vast majority of CBS News staff are stuffed into the CBS Broadcast Center on West 57th Street, 60 Minutes has long maintained a more traditional corporate office across the street, above BMW of Manhattan.

That connective tissue has always been present in the stories 60 Minutes presented: Unafraid to take on the powerful, explore the unexplored, and occasionally to give a different perspective on a public figure people thought they knew. Segments could stretch into the hundreds of thousands of dollars in cost, unprecedented for a TV news program.

And it has worked. 60 Minutes has been the number one news program on TV for years, routinely breaking into...

CBS Put ‘Evening News’ Through Massive Overhaul. Now It Needs People to Watch
Image
The venerable “CBS Evening News” has, for many of its viewers, been something consumed along with dinner. In recent weeks, the show has served up reports that could stop someone in mid-bite.

Correspondent Nikki Battiste recently traveled to New Jersey, where CBS News cameras were allowed into the bedroom of an Als patient on the day she had chosen to die. The video stopped just before the woman drank medicine that would put her into a deep sleep before passing on — all legal under state law. Half a world away, foreign correspondent Debora Patta recently managed to get into Sudan after two years of trying, and delivered a searing report on the plight of children there who aren’t getting the help once expected from the now-shuttered United States Agency for International Development. One infant shown in the report was starving, barely able to move, and clearly blind in one eye.

Donald Trump Calls for ‘60 Minutes’ to Be ‘Terminated’ Amid Lawsuit Over Kamala Harris Interview, Claims ‘CBS Should Lose Its License’
Image
President Donald Trump called on CBS to cancel its long-running newsmagazine, “60 Minutes,” the latest maneuver in a legal battle he started against the program last year.

A $10 billion lawsuit, filed by Trump in federal court in the Northern District of Texas in November, alleged “60 Minutes” tried to mislead voters by airing two different edits of remarks made in an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris, then Trump’s rival for the White House. CBS sought to have the case thrown out in a subsequent filing.

“CBS and 60 Minutes defrauded the public by doing something which has never, to this extent, been seen before,” Trump said in a social-media post. “They 100% removed Kamala’s horrible election changing answers to questions, and replaced them with completely different, and far better, answers, taken from another part of the interview. This was Election changing “stuff,” Election Interference and, quite simply,...

CBS News Posts ‘60 Minutes’ Transcripts, Video Sought by FCC: ‘Not Doctored or Deceitful’
Image
CBS News made public all materials tied to a “60 Minutes” interview with former U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris that have spurred a $10 billion suit from President Donald Trump and scrutiny from the Federal Communications Commission, saying in a release Wednesday that all the materials show that “consistent with 60 Minutes’ repeated assurances to the public — that the 60 Minutes broadcast was not doctored or deceitful.”

Filed in federal court in the Northern District of Texas in November, the suit alleges “60 Minutes” tried to mislead voters by airing two different edits of remarks made in an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris, then Trump’s rival for the White House. CBS sought to have the case thrown out in a subsequent filing.

CBS News at 4:55 p.m. on Monday provided the Federal Communications Commission with an unedited transcript of the Harris interview, complying with...

‘60 Minutes’ Executive Producer Tells Concerned Staffers That He Won’t Apologize For Segment At Heart Of Donald Trump’s Lawsuit
Image
As CBS News handed over an unedited transcript of a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris to the FCC, the show’s executive producer told staffers that he would not apologize for the segment, according to a source familiar with the matter.

In a meeting with staffers Monday, Bill Owens addressed concerns amid an FCC inquiry as well as reports that Paramount Global is in talks with President Donald Trump’s team over a lawsuit he filed over the segment in October.

Also speaking at the meeting were Anderson Cooper and Scott Pelley, and other correspondents were also present. The New York Times first reported on the meeting.

The FCC asked for the unedited transcript of the segment last week, as part of an inquiry into whether the show violated the agency’s rarely enforced “news distortion” policy. A conservative group, the Center for American Rights, claims that 60 Minutes...

‘60 Minutes’ Staffers Urged to Keep Show Ticking as Paramount Tangles With Trump
Image
Staffers at “60 Minutes” urged one another to keep the venerable CBS newsmagazine going even as corporate parent Paramount Global investigates the possibility of settling what is seen as a flimsy lawsuit tied to a report that ran on the show.

Speaking during a meeting held Monday, both correspondents Scott Pelley and Anderson Cooper cautioned an assemblage of employees who work for the Sunday-night mainstay against letting the lawsuit tear the show apart and distract people from the journalism is presents each week, according to a person familiar with the matter.

CBS News declined to make executives available for comment.

Employees at the Paramount Global unit have grown increasingly wary of Paramount’s willingness to consider settling the matter, according to people familiar with conversations taking place, seeing such efforts as a move to keep the looming acquisition of the company by Skydance Media on track, rather than supporting honest newsgathering.

CBS News Staffers Irate Over Talk of Paramount Settling Trump’s ‘60 Minutes’ Lawsuit
Image
Paramount Global and CBS News may have very different views on the journalism produced each week by “60 Minutes.”

Staffers at CBS News, the unit that serves as home to the venerable newsmagazine as well as “CBS Evening News” and has ties to the early days of TV news when Edward R. Murrow held sway, are steaming over the prospect that parent corporation Paramount Global may settle a $10 billion lawsuit filed by now-President Donald Trump against “60 Minutes” that appears to be underpinned by weak arguments.

Two reports in recent weeks, one published Thursday by the New York Times and another earlier this month by the Wall Street Journal, suggested executives at Paramount were considering ways to bring the suit to a close. Filed in federal court in the Northern District of Texas in November, the suit alleges “60 Minutes” tried to mislead voters by airing two different edits of...

Norah O’Donnell Shifts Date For Final ‘CBS Evening News’ Broadcast As Anchor – Update
Image
Updated with date change: Norah O’Donnell’s final night anchoring the CBS Evening News is now January 23, 2025, CBS confirmed Friday.

O’Donnell, who announced in July that she was exiting the role, was to have had her final show January 24, but because of CBS Sports’ coverage of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open that day, the CBS Evening News will be a West Coast-only edition.

The network shifted the date by a day so O’Donnell’s final show can be a full, national broadcast.

As previously announced, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois are taking over as lead anchors beginning January 27 as the CBS Evening News returns to New York as its home base after five years Washington, D.C.

Previously, November 22, 2024: Norah O’Donnell’s final night anchoring the CBS Evening News will be January 24, the CBS network’s news division told its staff Friday, which will bring...

Update: CBS on January 8 announced that due to sports coverage of Farmers Insurance Open on January 24, O’Donnell’s original date to sign off from “CBS Evening News,” her last broadcast will now take place on January 23.

Norah O’Donnell’s last day behind the anchor desk of “CBS Evening News” will be January 24, CBS News revealed Friday, setting up a timeline for a transition to a new format for a venerable news program that has been part of its schedule, under various names, since 1941.

O’Donnell, who became anchor of “Evening News” in July of 2019, is moving to a new role as a senior correspondent that will have her contribute special reports built around enterprise work or landing interviews with prominent newsmakers. She will continue to contribute to “Evening News,” “60 Minutes” and other CBS News programs. The arrangement is understood to be part of a longer-term commitment that the anchor...

Paramount Execs Have Rare Public Difference Of Opinion About CBS Interview With Ta-Nehisi Coates
Image
In a stark departure from its own corporate precedent and the usual circle-the-wagons approach of news divisions in crisis, top execs at CBS News parent Paramount Global have publicly disagreed this week.

At the center of the situation was an interview last week with author Ta-Nehisi Coates on CBS Mornings. While co-hosts Gayle King, Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil all sat in on the chat, Dokoupil drew criticism for dominating and pressing Coates on the section of his book, The Message, that criticizes Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. Dokoupil, who is Jewish, challenged Coates on whether he believed the state of Israel had a right to exist.

CBS News brass addressed the matter during a staff call Monday featuring Adrienne Roark, the president of editorial and newsgathering, and Wendy McMahon, president of CBS News and Stations. They told employees that Dokoupil’s questioning did not meet the news division’s “editorial standards.

Katie Couric Slams CBS For Replacing Norah O’Donnell With Two Men
Image
Katie Couric is sounding off about CBS’ latest human resources decision. CBS Evening News host Norah O’Donnell announced that she would be leaving her post on the program after the election this year. She has been on CBS Evening News for 12 years. Fellow news anchor Katie Couric is more than a “little disappointed” about who CBS chose to replace her.

Katie Couric Isn’t Impressed With CBS’ Decisions

Norah O’Donnell is being replaced with two men and Katie Couric couldn’t roll her eyes harder at the decision. Katie hosted the CBS Evening News from 2006 to 2011 and couldn’t help but share her thoughts on the matter. The famed news anchor wrote a guest essay for The New York Times on Sunday, August 11.

In the essay, Katie spoke about CBS hiring Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson to take over Norah’s jobs as anchor and managing editor. While Katie...

She doesn’t have a problem with the new anchors themselves, and even says she’s a fan, but she’s criticizing the hiring of two men for evening news on broadcast TV in a male-dominated space, as Lester Holt already hosts NBC Nightly News and David Muir hosts ABC World News Tonight.

“It was more than a little disappointing to read that Ms. O’Donnell would be replaced by two men, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois. Don’t get me wrong: I know, like and respect these two journalists.

Katie Couric Calls Decision to Replace CBS Evening News’ Norah O’Donnell With Two Men ‘Disappointing’ and ‘Out of Touch’

Former anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News Katie Couric is criticizing the network’s decision to replace outgoing host Norah O’Donnell with two men, Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson.

In her guest essay for The New York Times published Sunday, Couric made clear that her gripe wasn’t with DuBois and Dickerson in particular; rather, it was the fact that adding them to the roster makes broadcast TV’s evening news a male-dominated space, with Lester Holt hosting NBC Nightly News and David Muir emceeing ABC World News Tonight.

Katie Couric Calls Out CBS for Hiring Two Men to Replace Norah O’Donnell as ‘Evening News’ Host: ‘Disappointing…Odd and More Than a Little Out of Touch’

Katie Couric wrote a guest essay for The New York Times in which she called out CBS for replacing Norah O’Donnell as the host of “CBS Evening News” with two men, Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson. Couric hosted “CBS Evening News” herself for five years from 2006 to 2011. Her issue is not with the new anchors themselves, as she’s a fan of both DuBois and Dickerson, but with their hiring now making the evening news on broadcast television a male-dominated space as Lester Holt already hosts “NBC Nightly News” and David Muir helms “ABC World News Tonight.”

Katie Couric Says That It Is “More Than A Little Disappointing” That CBS News Chose Two Males To Succeed Norah O’Donnell As Anchor
Image
Katie Couric, the former anchor of CBS Evening News, weighed in on the network’s recent overhaul of the nightly broadcast, calling it “more than a little disappointing” that Norah O’Donnell’s successors will be two male anchors.

The network recently announced that John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois would be anchoring CBS Evening News after O’Donnell’s steps down following the November election.

Couric wrote in an op ed in The New York Times, “Don’t get me wrong: I know, like and respect these two journalists. But soon, on the big three networks, there will be four male anchors. Yes, the talented Margaret Brennan will be contributing stories from the Washington bureau for CBS, but the two people who will be greeting Americans watching the CBS evening newscast will be men.”

As Couric noted, after the change, the three broadcast networks’ evening newscasts all will be anchored by men,...

Bill Owens
Exclusive: Few people embody the act of balancing legacy media with the digital frontier quite like Bill Owens.

As the executive producer of 60 Minutes, he is the caretaker of a broadcast TV franchise well into its sixth decade, one of the few pieces of programming outside of NFL football capable of drawing mass tune-in. He is also aiming to deliver news about topics like the 2024 election, China, Gaza, the southern U.S. border, Cillian Murphy, and many more in a way that Gen Z cord-nevers can engage with it.

“I really do want to meet viewers where there’s interest,” he told Deadline in an interview in the show’s headquarters on Manhattan’s Far West Side. “We’re not trying to grab people on social media or TikTok by being something that 60 Minutes isn’t. We want to use the same language, we don’t want to do silly things.
