Following the success of chaotic cowboy drama Yellowstone, co-creator Taylor Sheridan has been given an entire book of blank checks, and has cashed as many as he could manage in just five years. While his involvement in these TV projects wavers, sometimes drastically, his brand has always been on point.
With over half a dozen shows now within the House of Sheridan, let’s take a look at how each program measures up against the rest of the catalog.
7. Lawmen: Bass Reeves
The story of real life American folk legend Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) was originally supposed to be a larger cog in the Yellowstone prequel machine, but as it continued to evolve, it became its own standalone project, which works both for and against the show. Part of the charm of the Yellowstone prequels for any Sheridan fan is getting to search for connections between the different generations of the Dutton family.

Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 and Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty made a welcome showing at the Golden Globe nominations Monday, while the final season of Succession on HBO earned a deserved yet predictable round of nominations.
The Yellowstone prequel — the second created by Sheridan after 1883 — earned nominations in the Best Drama category and the Actress category, with Helen Mirren earning a nod for playing the Dutton matriarch. Other memorable performances in the prequel were overlooked, like Harrison Ford’s turn as Jacob Dutton and the phenomenal Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater, but it was a win for Paramount+ to see one of Sheridan’s joints get some early recognition.
Speaking of which, David Oyelowo earned a nomination for his leading role in Lawmen: Bass Reeves – Sheridan’s new anthology that only dropped last month on Paramount+. He’s competing in the Actor/Limited Series category alongside Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers), Woody Harrelson...

Taylor Sheridan's grip on the small screen continued with 1923, the latest chapter in the Yellowstone saga.

1923: Has It Been Renewed for Season 2?
Unlike 1883, which was designed as one season to tell a complete story, 1923 is getting a second season.
As the writing process was underway, Taylor Sheridan realized he needed more time to wrap up the storylines, which means we're getting a second season.
It will probably be the final season because the superproducer has been vocal about not wanting to keep the shows on the air beyond their initial storylines.

During a recent Gold Derby video interview, senior editor Rob Licuria spoke in-depth with Aminah Nieves (“1923”) about Season 1 of her Paramount Plus drama, which is eligible at the 2023 Emmys. Watch the full video above and read the complete interview transcript below.
After the acclaimed Western’s first season concluded in February, fans were left with lots of open questions about where their favorite characters would end up. Nieves is the breakout star of the show as the resilient Teonna Rainwater of the Crow Tribe of Montana, a rebellious young woman who was taken from her family and placed in a Native American boarding school for indigenous girls run by the Catholic Church.
Speaking about how she brought so much emotional depth to her character, Nieves proclaimed in our webchat, “I think for me, and honestly I think for a lot of Bipoc [Black, Indigenous, People of Color] communities in general, these traumas, they’re carried through wounds.

Mo Brings Plenty has openly said that he was ready to quit acting before Yellowstone came along. An enrolled member of the Lakota Nations, he was frustrated with the cultural misappropriation he saw onscreen, until he was cast in the first season of the Paramount Network flagship series that launched in 2018. As the right-hand man to Broken Rock Tribe chief Thomas Rainwater (played by Gil Birmingham), Mo (also the name of his character) began as a smaller role that expanded with each season of the Kevin Costner-led series created by Taylor Sheridan. But it’s from behind the scenes that Brings Plenty helps to provide a grassroots-level of authenticity to the franchise’s Native storylines — a rarity, he acknowledges, when it comes to representation onscreen. “If you want accuracy, then you have to come to a few of us. We’re not a dime a dozen anymore,” says Yellowstone‘s Native affairs coordinator,...

The latest show affected by the ongoing writers strike is 1923. Filming for the second season of the Yellowstone prequel was scheduled to start earlier this month in Montana but production has now been “delayed indefinitely.”
According to a report from NBC Montana, Butte Civic Center manager Bill Melvin said he was contacted by the production of the Paramount+ series that filming had been postponed as the WGA strike continues.
Filming for the sophomore season of 1923 was due to start on Monday, June 5, and according to Melvin, production is paying $75,000 a month to use the Civic Center through the end of the year.
Creator Taylor Sheridan was already eyeing two seasons for 1923 but Paramount+ officially confirmed a second eight-episode season earlier this year to finish off the saga starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.

What
Newcomer Aminah Nieves plays Teonna Rainwater, a student — or rather, prisoner — of a Catholic boarding school in Montana. In 1923’s authentic depiction of how the church dehumanized indigenous youths while trying to assimilate them into European American culture, Teonna rages against — and ultimately escapes — her brutal captors. “I was scared a lot,” the actress recalls of her first season. “I wanted to make sure I was honoring every single human, every single family member, my grandparents, my aunties, my mom, my dad and then all of the communities. The latest series in Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” franchise, “1923,” tells the story of a world in transition. The rural, classically Western values of “1883” are colliding with the modern technology of washing machines and automobiles, and the scope of the mythology has expanded beyond American borders to follow characters all over the world. That meant big challenges and exciting opportunities for costume designer Janie Bryant, who was tasked with creating wardrobe for hundreds of speaking roles and stunt players as well as thousands of extras. “We shot the show on three continents and I had four costume teams: one in L.A., one in Montana, one in South Africa, and one in Malta,” Bryant told IndieWire. “You have to take it a few days at a time, or a week at a time. You can’t think of the whole all at once because it’s too overwhelming.”

“I did some globe trotting on that show,” declares production designer Cary White about his work on “1923.” The Paramount + series serves as a prequel to the hugely successful drama “Yellowstone.” White is no stranger to the “Yellowstone” universe, having served in the same capacity on both “Yellowstone” and the previous prequel series “1883.” However according to White, “1923” had its own unique set of challenges. Check out more of our exclusive video chat with White above.
White had been retired for a number of years when “Yellowstone” and “1923” creator and writer Taylor Sheridan invited White to work on the franchise’s flagship series. As it turns out, White had worked on one of Sheridan’s favorite television projects– the 1989 television miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry‘s “Lonesome Dove.” “Taylor got on the phone. I was living in Mexico at the time and was retired,” recalls White. “[Sheridan] said, ‘Well, how retired are you?...

This story about Mo Amer, Jessica Williams, Helen Mirren, Aminah Nieves, Brandon Sklenar, Delroy Lindo and Mayan Lopez originally appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
First-year series play a vital role at the Emmys, which can start to feel like a parade of “been there, done that” as the same shows take home awards year after year. Five new shows broke into the Outstanding Drama and Comedy Series categories last year, and here are some of our favorites from the many hoping to accomplish the same feat in 2023.

Hollywood might not have seemed predestined for Mo Amer, a Palestinian American standup who, after fleeing Kuwait (where he was born), settled in Houston, Texas. He’s a natural storyteller, and his semi-autobiographical Netflix series “Mo” proves that he’s exactly where he’s meant to be.

Not a single character had it easy in 1923‘s grueling first season. But while various member of the Dutton clan experienced moments of joy interspersed among the death and heartbreak of life on the Montana plains, Teonna Rainwater got little reprieve.
We met the Native American teen when she was a student held against her will at a Catholic boarding school. All of the students were indigenous children who’d been taken from their families and forced to abandon their language and culture in an attempt at assimilation. “Yellowstone” may have been shut out at the 2022 Emmys, but Paramount+’s Western spinoff “1923” is hoping to break that cycle.
Creator Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the entire first season of the freshman series, has chosen to submit the premiere episode, titled “1923,” for Emmy consideration, Variety can exclusively confirm. In addition, the same kickoff episode will serve as Ben Richardson’s official submission for outstanding directing for a drama.
Read Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Emmy predictions in all categories.
The eight-episode prequel to Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” and sequel to Paramount+’s “1883” follows a generation of the Dutton family during various hardships, including prohibition, drought and the early stages of the Great Depression.

Editor’s Note: This interview took place before the writers strike that began May 2.
The cast of 1923 reunited for a chat about the first season of the hit Paramount+ Yellowstone prequel and gave some insight into the process of the franchise’s prolific creator, Taylor Sheridan.
“Taylor called us and said, ‘You have to look at every scene and imagine that it could be the most important scene of the episode, even if it’s just you walking from point A to point B,'” recalled Julia Schlaepfer (Alexandra) in the THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media. “Everything has meaning.”
That meaning extended to Sheridan’s dialogue, which frequently uses unconventional sentence structures (example: “Why danger gives men such pleasure, I’ll never understand”). “Sometimes you get a weird sentence construction and you go, ‘Why does it go like that?'” recalls Helen Mirren (Cara Dutton). “Because it’s...

Earlier this week TheWrap hosted a screening of the first episode of “1923,” with stars Helen Mirren, Brandon Sklenar and Aminah Nieves, along with editor Chad Galster, production designer Cary White and assistant costume designer Samantha Pavlat.
It was a fascinating chat (you can watch the whole thing above), but what was particularly intriguing was when the topic of joining a beloved franchise like “Yellowstone” was brought up.
“I don’t see it as a franchise,” Mirren said. “I don’t see it like that.”
But if it isn’t a franchise to Mirren, then what is it?

The highly popular Yellowstone spinoff 1923 has wrapped up its first season, and viewers are still reeling from the intense finale. While there were plenty of heartbreaking cliffhangers and treacherous uncertainty this season, there was a beacon of hope amid all the chaos.
That hope comes in the form of Teonna Rainwater, the breakout Indigenous character played by Aminah Nieves. Throughout the season, viewers have watched as Teonna endures countless hardships, only to discover in the final episode that she’s a true survivor.
But there is one scene in the first season of 1923 that Nieves admitted almost “broke” her on the Yellowstone prequel.
Aminah Nieves | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic Aminah Nieves opens up about the scene that ‘broke’ her on 1923
Teonna’s introduction to viewers in 1923 is a difficult one. From the very beginning of the Yellowstone prequel, Nieves’ character is subjected to horrific abuse – physical, emotional, and sexual – simply because she refuses to assimilate culturally.

Following last night’s screening of “1923,” the cast of the Paramount+ “Yellowstone” prequel series were joined by members of the show’s crafts team for a discussion with TheWrap. They gathered for the event (which is part of our 2023 Awards Season Screening Series) and shared stories about the making of the first season, working with creator Taylor Sheridan and the complexities of a historical drama that stretches across three storylines.
They also contemplated what could be in store for the show’s second season, which is currently in the works. As it turns out, they couldn’t speculate much because nobody has seen a script and Sheridan isn’t letting anything slip. But they’re all very excited to return. Sklenar joked that he is ready to (finally) be back on the ranch and share some scenes with Ford.

Yellowstone star Mo Brings Plenty has nothing but good things to say about the show’s creator Taylor Sheridan. Brings Plenty stars in the flagship series as Mo and is also the American Indian coordinator for the show’s prequel, 1923.
In a recent interview, Brings Plenty commended Sheridan’s bravery for bringing the trauma-filled 1923 storyline to life on the popular TV show. And at the forefront of the discussion was Teonna Rainwater’s (Aminah Nieves) horrific experience during the Indian boarding-school era.

In the first season of 1923, Sheridan was not afraid to explore some troubling points in history. This includes Teonna’s time at an Indian boarding school, which was marked with physical and sexual abuse.
Given the nature of Teonna’s story, Sheridan ensured that everyone on set felt safe and secure.

Helen Mirren had no clue who she would play in the Paramount+ series 1923 because creator Taylor Sheridan likes to build characters around the actors who are cast to play them.
“For the first time in my life, I wasn’t given a script. I had no idea what it was going to be, and likewise for Harrison [Ford],” Mirren shared during Deadline’s Contenders Television panel Sunday. “We were asked to participate, and you do what you do as an actor and say, ‘Lovely, sounds really interesting. I’d love to read the script?’ But there is no script. Taylor likes to write for the people that he knows are going to play the role. That was a combination of flattering and at the same time sort of rather nerve-wracking because I’d actually never met Taylor Sheridan and maybe when he meets me, he won’t want to write for me.

As a cultural consultant for Yellowstone and its prequel series 1923, Mo Brings Plenty plays a crucial role in ensuring that the show’s portrayal of various Native American tribes is accurate and respectful. But for Brings Plenty, this work is more than just a job – it is deeply personal.

Unlike the first Yellowstone prequel 1883, Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 was always meant to have a season 2. The series will return with more of the 20th-century Dutton’s story, but there’s limited information about the new season. Here’s everything we know so far.

Oh “1923,” you thrilling, thoughtful, brutal show. What a finale you delivered. And for us viewers whose heads are spinning from Timothy Dalton’s Bdsm-obsessed bad guy and that heartbreaking separation for Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) there’s so much to process that we need that “1923” ending explained.
The thing that’s so interesting about the Season 1 finale, “Nothing Left to Lose,” written, as with every episode of the “Yellowstone” franchise, by Taylor Sheridan, is that it actually resolves quite a lot even as it sets up that much more for the future. Could it have served as a series finale if “1923” hadn’t already been renewed for Season 2? Possibly. There don’t appear to be plans for a continuation of “1883,” and the production values of “1923” are very much of the no-expense-spared variety.

This article contains spoilers for the 1923 season 1 finale.
Much like its very busy creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan, Paramount+’s 1923 is barely taking any time off. After season 1 of the Yellowstone prequel concluded with its finale on Sunday, Feb. 26, production on season 2 is set to get moving soon.
Before 1923 even premiered, Sheridan revealed that, unlike previous Yellowstone prequel 1883, he envisioned this new series as a two-season experience. Sure enough, Paramount+ announced the show’s season 2 renewal shortly after season 1 began airing. Then the Wall Street Journal reported that filming was set to begin on season 2 this spring. The upshot of it all is that 1923 season 2 could arrive by the end of 2023, just as both 1923 and 1883 premiered in December each of the past two years.
Though that level of “end of year” consistency is appreciated, it also means that Yellowstone fans still have a long wait to endure for more Montana madness.

This 1923 review contains spoilers for the episode and the Yellowstone universe at large.
1923 Episode 8
In the 1923 season 1 finale, there’s a well-written little nugget of dialogue spoken by breakout character Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves) when she tells her father, with conviction, that she “believes in right now.” While inspiring, that affirmation sticks out because of the inherent dramatic irony.
Yellowstone supercreator, Taylor Sheridan, who only half a decade ago barely had one show to his name, now helms nine television shows, all in varying degrees of production. On the surface, he certainly seems like a man who has to live in the “right now”, as his time is so precious, it would be difficult to think about nice different things at the same time, so best to focus on the here and now. However, it may be fair to say that his writing has recently suffered on several of his...

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from the finale of 1923 on Paramount+.
The first season of 1923 ended Sunday with not one but three rather dismal developments: Spencer Dutton (Brendan Sklenar) and his wife Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) were torn apart at sea, Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) told Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) that he pretty much owns him after having paid the property taxes on Yellowstone, and Elizabeth Dutton (Michelle Randolph) lost the first baby she conceived with her new husband Jack (Darren Mann). Leave it to creator Taylor Sheridan to keep things challenging and sad as hell in his Yellowstone-verse!
Here, actress Randolph — a relative newcomer whose credits include The Resort and The Undertaker’s Wife — talks about shooting that heartbreaking scene with Mann. She also reveals who she likes spending time with now that production has wrapped and what fans always want to talk about if they ever meet her on the street.

And while there were no deaths in the episode, there were certainly no happy endings. In Montana, Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) were struggling to find the money to buy enough hay to feed their cattle through the winter. Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) was released from prison without bail. Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) experienced a miscarriage. Zane’s (Brian Geraghty) wife was arrested for marrying and having children with a white man. Teonna (Aminah Nieves) was found by her father (Michael Spears) and Pete (Cole Brings Plenty), but she’s still being hunted. In ...

Paramount+’s 1923 season one finishes up with episode eight, “Nothing Left to Lose,” an episode that ends with multiple cliffhangers and none of the three major storylines any closer to resolution. The season finale split fan-favorite couple Alex and Spencer apart, left Donald Whitfield sitting in the catbird seat, and revealed Cara’s worried that Spencer’s the Yellowstone Ranch’s only hope. And Teonna’s storyline only advanced as far as the Wyoming state line, with law enforcement and Father Renaud hot on her tail.
At least Paramount+ has already confirmed 1923 is returning for season two and we will, eventually, learn if Alex and Spencer make it to Montana. However, Paramount+ hasn’t announced when fans can expect a second season to arrive.

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from episode seven of 1923 on Paramount+.
Anyone who tuned in to Taylor Sheridan’s latest Yellowstone prequel expecting wall-to-wall storytelling about the Dutton family was in for a shock: half of the story has been devoted to the horrific treatment of young indigenous women in a boarding school run by Catholic nuns and a very sadistic priest.
One of those girls is played by Aminah Nieves, an indigenous actress who landed the very important role of Teonna Rainwater — a veritable prisoner of the Catholics who can dish it out as much as she can take it. Teonna finally escapes the clutches of her captors but trouble continues to follow her.
Here, Nieves talks affectionately about meeting Taylor “Tay Tay” Sheridan and how important it was for her to accept the role.

Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” might be in hibernation but that doesn’t mean that you are totally deprived of Dutton-related drama, as prequel series “1923” is currently streaming. It’s full of all the things that make “Yellowstone” so special – frontier justice, cowboys, big movie stars and a surprising amount of pistol whipping.
“1923” picks up after the events of “1883.” Harrison Ford plays Jacob Dutton, the brother of James Dutton (Tim McGraw’s character on “1883”). After James and Margaret (Faith Hill) passed away, Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) take the boys in. Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) is the dedicated cowboy and ranchman while Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), having Ptsd from World War I, retreats to Africa to hunt big game. In a very real way we are seeing the beginnings of the Yellowstone ranch, not just in the buildings but in the craggy philosophy and the psychic trauma that seems to permeate the soil.

“1923” is one of the most progressive shows on TV right now.
That may come as a shock to the many people who think Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” universe is inherently for Red Staters. Sheridan’s burgeoning constellation of Western TV series draws the kind of viewership numbers usually reserved for “NCIS” and other, older-skewing broadcast shows that the critical class usually ignores. “Yellowstone” and its first prequel “1883” are series that largely focus on grizzled white people in 10-gallon hats carrying guns, after all.
Each of the “Yellowstone” series features Native American characters. But “1923” has been startling for the time and the emphasis it’s given to the storyline of Teonna (Aminah Nieves), and what that storyline implies about how historic structural inequities continue to govern outcomes for Indigenous Americans today. It’s “critical race theory,” the term wildly mischaracterized by political opportunists that refers to the idea...

[This story contains spoilers for 1923’s sixth episode, “One Ocean Closer to Destiny.”]
As her first foray into television, Michelle Randolph couldn’t have dreamt up a better experience than the one she’s having on 1923. Whether it’s the mentorship of Helen Mirren or the dear friendship of castmates like Julia Schlaepfer and Aminah Nieves, Randolph has gained much more than just horseback-riding skills from cowboy camp, a Taylor Sheridan-verse staple.
Randolph’s character, Elizabeth “Liz” Strafford, grew up on the Strafford Ranch, which is adjacent to the Yellowstone Ranch, and according to Randolph’s own backstory, Elizabeth fell in love with her newly minted husband, Jack Dutton (Darren Mann), during one of her summers back from school on the East Coast. Oddly enough, Randolph and Mann had already played a couple in an indie horror movie called House of the Witch (2017), so it’s somewhat poetic that he would be a part of her first movie and now her first TV show.
