In recent months, Ashanti has begun pulling back the curtain on the misogynistic and predatory power imbalances she has encountered working in the music industry for the past two decades. Her latest divulgence arrived during an appearance on the Breakfast Club, where she resurfaced claims that an unnamed producer offered her the ultimatum of having shower sex with him or handing over 80,000 in exchange for two songs they worked on together.
“We did two records together, he was like, ‘Okay, I’m not gonna charge you, you know you my homie,...

Ashanti is finally speaking out about Irv Gotti and the comments he's made about the nature of their relationship. The "Foolish" singer's response comes months after Gotti, founder of Murder Inc. Records, released his five-part BET docuseries recounting the history of his record label - which included salacious comments about their alleged intimate moments and deserving ownership of her masters (Ashanti is currently in the process of rerecording her self-titled debut album). After staying silent and refusing to appear in Gotti's documentary, Ashanti set the record straight during her appearance on Angie Martinez's "Irl" podcast.
The episode, released on Oct. 26, features an hour-plus-long conversation between the two, much of which focuses on Ashanti addressing what her former label head said about her in episode three of his docuseries, which she's heavily discussed in. "It's very unfortunate how Irv decided to handle his documentary," Ashanti told Martinez. "It's a little...

“We just finished sleeping together, or whatever, I’m taking a shower. I’m in the shower, you know, a n***a be creative after [sex]. I think of the whole track in the shower,” Gotti claimed.

The BET Awards are officially a celebration of “Black excellence,” and Sunday night’s show featured blockbuster performances from Lizzo, Mariah Carey, Latto, Jack Harlow (who was joined by Brandy and Lil Wayne) and an elaborate tribute to Lifetime Achievement honoree Sean “Diddy” Combs that included an unannounced in-person speech from Kanye West.

Progress continues to be incremental in front of and behind television cameras in Hollywood. An October 2021 UCLA Television Diversity study examined 461 scripted television shows airing or streaming during the 2019-20 season. It revealed that only 32.1 percent of scripted broadcast network shows, 28.1 percent on cable TV, and 26.8 percent on streaming platforms, featured majority non-white casts. Each category saw an increase of roughly 2-3 percent over the previous season. In summary, despite popular claims of a “renaissance” for Bipoc creatives in Hollywood (especially for African Americans), there’s still much work to be done on the matter of inclusion in all job areas.
As their study states, the Bipoc group is not proportionately represented to their share of the U.S. population, even though audience interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity, continues to increase.

An October 2020 UCLA Hollywood Diversity study — which focused on broadcast, cable and streaming programming for the previous two television seasons — reported that, when it comes to racial diversity in television industry jobs, while Black, indigenous, and other people of color (Bipoc) creatives continue to make incremental gains, positions at the highest ranks and behind the camera still elude them. The group is not represented proportionately to their share of the U.S. population overall, even though audiences continue to show interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity.
The analysis found that the greatest racial disparities are in behind-the-camera jobs such as a show’s creator, director, and writer: Among digital programs, just 10.3 percent of show creators were Bipoc; in broadcast, 10.7 percent; and for cable, 14.7 percent.
White men still dominate these positions, as well as high-level TV executive jobs. As of 2020, chair/CEO positions were overwhelmingly held...

"It caused a buzz, and I want people to know I didn't start the whole 'Irv Gotti for president' thing; the people did," the former Def Jam A&R told MTV News as he walked the red carpet at the reopening of Jay-z's 40/40 Club in Manhattan last week. "It was a crazy thing, and it was all good."

Actually, the headline lies. We are really having a hard time imagining what really went down at the party celebrating the reopening of Jay-z’s 40/40 Club in New York City last night. It was Hov’s first public appearance since the birth of Blue Ivy Carter, and Beyonce understandably chose to stay home. The sheer variety of attendees would blow our mind if we weren’t already used to Jay’s wide scope of influence: Warren Buffet, Selita Ebanks, Spike Lee, Mob Wives star Renee Graziano and Yankees pitcher Cc Sabathia were there along with his more musical pals like Ashanti, Wale, Questlove and Irv Gotti. Head over to VH1 Blog for a gallery of the illustrious guests, and watch what Ashanti and Gotti had to say about the new parents in an interview with MTV News below.

New York — Jay-z has a lot to celebrate. A little over a week ago, he and wife Beyoncé welcomed daughter Blue Ivy Carter into the world, and on Wednesday night, big poppa Hov had a bit of business to attend to at the reopening of his 40/40 Club.
The stars came out and walked the red carpet before entering the redesigned sports bar. Jay's buddies Warren Buffet, Spike Lee, Steve Stoute, Kevin Liles and New York Yankees pitcher Cc Sabathia all attended.
"Hov always has big parties, so I'm definitely looking forward to going inside and mingling and jingling," Ashanti said.

MTV counts down the top 10 electronic dance music artists of the year.

Maybe you were at the grocery store when you found yourself singing along to Afrojack's "Take Over Control" for the hundredth time. Or maybe it was when Martin Solveig's "Hello" was suddenly on repeat on your iPod. Whatever your moment was, it's fair to say the American appetite for electronic dance music surged in 2011, bringing "the rave" to radio and festivals, touching every U.S. city (big and small). Even Grammy voters took notice this year, nominating Skrillex for Best New Artist and in four other categories.
Afrojack, David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Benny Benassi put up mainstream, chart-topping bangers. Las Vegas' Electric Daisy Carnival and Miami's Ultra Music Festival saw record attendance, and dance music's biggest stars headlined a stage at every major mainstream festival: Lollapalooza,...

Irv Gotti has another endorsement in his quasi-campaign to become president of Def Jam: Jadakiss thinks the producer and executive would be a good fit at the storied record label.
The Yonkers rapper "loved" Gotti's early October appearance on MTV News' "RapFix Live," when he insisted he was the "best man" for Def Jam's currently vacant presidency.
"It was one of the best 'RapFix' [interviews] ever," Jada told MTV News. "He said a lot of stuff that doesn't get said. When Irv Gotti appeared on "RapFix Live" on October 5, he joked that he has no filter. And when the subject of his former Murder Inc. artist Lloyd came up, Gotti didn't hold back, saying he had "no love" for the R&B singer.
Lloyd, however, took the high road when asked about his old boss. "I haven't been in that situation for years now," said Lloyd, who has since moved to Interscope Records. "I think that what don't break us, makes us, and people throw stones a lot, but I don't live in a glass house. I don't really feel affected by the comments that were made towards me."

Bad Boy Records has a rich tradition. Since its inception in the early 1990s, label CEO Sean "Diddy" Combs has introduced some of hip-hop's most influential artists. Of course, there was the Notorious B.I.G., the Lox, Ma$e and Black Rob. Now, Diddy is looking to launch the next generation of Bad Boy spitters like Mgk and Wednesday's "RapFix Live" guest, Red Café.
The Brooklyn spitter began his career as a part of the group Da Franchise but later branched off with his solo career. Making his mark on New York's mixtape market, Red earned quite a few record deals but was never able to release his proper debut album, despite churning out a ton of notable singles like 2005's "Bling Blaow," 2008's "Paper Touchin' " and 2010's "I'm Ill.

Throughout his career, Method Man has been able to earn his respect in hip-hop and Hollywood simultaneously. As a prominent member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Meth has released four solo albums, two with Redman and a number of Clan-related projects. As an actor, he's starred in major films like "Belly" and "Cop Land," as well as the critically acclaimed HBO series "The Wire."
Look for Meth to take his acting to another level in the next few months. First, in December he will star alongside Jonah Hill in "The Sitter." While on set with the "Superbad" actor, Tical learned a lesson in improv.

Throughout the course of his 16-year music career, Irv Gotti has served as a DJ, record producer, A&R, video director and label CEO, but when he appeared on "RapFix Live" last week, the Murder Inc. founder revealed that he was at one time also looking to add labor organizer to his already-extensive résumé.
In the early 2000s, it was rumored that Irv, along with Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight and Rap-a-Lot CEO James Prince, was looking to start a black-owned record distribution company. Gotti, however, revealed that the now-aborted plan was much bigger.
"It wasn't a distribution; it was a union. In the music business, the artists, we have no union. There's no health care, it's nothing like that.

Lloyd has just dropped visuals filmed in a "lyrics-video style" to support his remix single "Lay It Down", which features B.o.B. The R&B crooner compiles footage from his concerts as well as some behind-the-scene looks for the music video.
The single is recorded for Lloyd's upcoming studio album "King of Hearts" which is long delayed. Back in September 2009, he talked about collaborations he plans for the CD, "I'm working with Lil Wayne again, Jim Jonsin, Young Jeezy, Keri Hilson, Cool & Dre, and Rick Ross."
Planned to be released this summer, "King of Hearts" will be Lloyd's first studio installment since his 2008 studio album "Lessons in Love". This will also be his debut on Interscope Records following his departure from Irv Gotti's The Inc in 2009.

In the early aughts, Queens rapper Ja Rule was a hip-hop juggernaut. As the face of Irv Gotti's Murder Inc. His beef with rapper 50 Cent, as well as the federal money-laundering case against Murder Inc. proved to be too much for the multi-platinum rap star to overcome, and eventually Rule faded away from the spotlight.
