Every parent knows there are generally two kinds of animated features: the ones that put in the extra work to appeal to an audience of all ages and the ones that don’t aspire to entertain anyone but the easy-to-please under-12 set. Thelma The Unicorn is, sadly, the latter.

Dig your business socks out from the back of your dresser drawer because it might be business time before you know it! Rhys Darby recently spoke with Deadline at the Creative Arts Emmys and informed the outlet that a Flight of the Conchords reunion could be on the horizon. Flight of the Conchords is a comedic musical duo out of New Zealand featuring Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie. Flight of the Conchords is also the name of the band’s HBO series that launched in 2007 and ran for two seasons before getting canceled. Darby plays the band’s manager, Murray Hewitt, in the show, and now there are rumblings of getting the band back together.
“We’re always discussing the sort of things we’d like to do in the future and looking back at the classic things we’ve done,” Darby told Deadline on Saturday. “There will come a time when the world really,...

New Zealander Rhys Darby made a splash in the U.S. in 2007 for his portrayal of band manager Murray Hewitt in HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, a series that ended after only two short seasons. And while he and his co-stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie have all moved on to other projects, the trio might surprise fans one day with a reunion.
“We’re always discussing the sort of things we’d like to do in the future and looking back at the classic things we’ve done,” Darby revealed to Deadline at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, where he presented statuettes in multiple categories. “There will come a time when the world really, really needs [the reunion] and we will suddenly appear.”

Margo Price is leading off a new all-star tribute album to Leon Russell, A Song for Leon, with her take on the great singer-songwriter’s 1971 tune, “Stranger in a Strange Land.”
Price’s rendition of the Leon Russell and the Shelter People opener is rich and booming, a glorious country rocker that feels at once distinct from, and lovingly faithful to, the original. In a statement, Price described “Stranger in a Strange Land” as a “prolific” song and noted that, since recording the cover, it’s become a staple at her live shows.

We’ve long been obsessed with disaster. On his new show The End Is Nye, beloved TV scientist and America’s father figure Bill Nye points to the storms of The Tempest, but even Shakespeare caught the catastrophe bug earlier than that. Twelfth Night opens with a shipwreck. In her menacing extreme weather speech in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Titania speaks of tremendous floods, rotting crops, and disappearing seasons. Now, we have 24-hour news channels that thrive on disaster porn.
Nye appeals to our attraction to calamity, even as he balks at it. “Think about it, people,” he declares on his debut Peacock series about the varied forms – from solar flares to careening comets – Armageddon might take. His eyes are wide, and his voice wobbles with opprobrium. “We’re like some kind of weird death cult.”

Is there anyone out there writing more emo-tastic lyrics than Yungblud? The 24-year-old Doncastrian (aka Dominic Harrison) kicks off his self-titled third album with a gleefully mascara-smudging blast of pop-rock, in which he imagines “dancing at my funeral/ Waiting for you to arrive/ I was hoping you’d look beautiful/ Dancing with tears in your eyes/ But nobody came, what a shame, hey…”
Hands up – the headbang-as-you-shop mall-rock sound that Yungblud embraces here has never been my cuppa. The pretty thrash-by-numbers blurs notes like plaid shirts on hangers flipped swiftly along chrome rails, allowing melodies to glide past forgettably. Like the credit-roll track of every teen romcom since the 1990s, delivering enough focus and momentum to ensure you leave the cinema with your jacket, but not enough to linger in your head on the journey home.
Yet Harrison has a knack for narrative and a snagging vocal that lifts potential...

Early in 2010, Bret McKenzie decided it was about time he started guitar lessons. The New Zealand-born actor and songwriter enrolled himself in a class at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, a music school founded in 2001 by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. McKenzie’s new guitar teacher was naturally curious about what had inspired him to head back to school alongside children and beginners. He told him he had a show coming up. “He was like: ‘Oh that’s good, where are you playing?’” recalls the 46-year-old in his broad Kiwi accent. Sitting in the light and airy home studio above his garage in Wellington, he contorts his more-salt-than-pepper beard into an awkward grimace. “I was like: ‘Er, yeah... we’re playing the Hollywood Bowl.” He bursts out laughing. “Something very strange happened there.”

Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie pays tribute to a late collaborator on his new Eighties-inspired song, “Dave’s Place.” The track will appear on McKenzie’s upcoming solo record, Songs Without Jokes, out Aug. 26 via Sub Pop.
As McKenzie explained in a statement, “Dave’s Place” is dedicated to Dave Bianco, an audio engineer he worked with on several occasions, who died not long before McKenzie started working on Songs Without Jokes. “Dave had a studio in the North Hollywood he referred to as ‘Dave’s place,’” McKenzie said.

In February, the moon fell in Roland Emmerich's sci-fi disaster movie, "Moonfall." In March, the moon was then shot — full of love — in the HBO Max rom-com, "Moonshot." In April, we are happy to report that director Jorma Taccone is here to pick the moon up and keep running with it in a film called "Moonland."
Since the script for "Moonland" is written by Bret McKenzie — one half of the musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords — and since Taccone himself is one third of the musical comedy trio, The Lonely Island, "Moonland" will serve as the movie equivalent of a mock-rock supergroup. Photo: ‘Our Flag Means Death’ Ineptitude That Plays After hilariously stealing essentially every scene featuring his character Murray in ‘Flight of the Conchords’, Rhys Darby is back in rare form as Captain Stede Bonnet in ‘Our Flag Means Death’, HBO’s brand new comedy streaming now. As Murray, Darby functioned as the main authority figure as the manager for Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement’s bandmate characters. In ‘Our Flag Means Death’, he is back in control of the situation, this time playing a pirate captain who has absolutely no business being a pirate captain. He is fantastic in the role of incompetent leader, leaning in to a lot of the skills he showed off previously as Murray and here again as Stede. The Simpsons have released a song from their recent episode spoofing Morrissey, “Everyone Is Horrid Except Me (And Possibly You),” as an official single.
The episode, dubbed “Panic on the Streets of Springfield,” aired in April and centered around Lisa becoming enamored with a brooding, militant vegan British musician named Quilloughby (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), who used to front a band called the Snuffs. The Simpsons aired one of its most pointed parodies this past weekend, “Panic on the Streets of Springfield,” and the hits keep on coming. Animation Domination on Fox dropped “Everyone Is Horrid Except Me (And Possibly You),” the new music video by Quilloughby (with Lisa Simpson), which came out on The Snuff’s label, Total Despair Records.
The lyrics are inspired sub-genre satire. “Everyday I try to smile, but can’t help but frown, Every day I draw my bath and pray I will drown,” Quilloughby (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) sings, and heaven knows he’s miserable, now and forever. Listen and abandon hope.
The song captures the feel of the nihilistic depression rock of days past, and the episode caught the eye of the sardonic satiric subject.

The Simpsons recently struck a chord with former Smiths frontman Morrissey, whose manager Peter Katsis chewed out the long-running Fox animated series for “trying to capitalize on cheap controversy and expounding on vicious rumors.”
Late Sunday evening, Katsis shared a lengthy post on the singer’s official Facebook page responding to the show’s “Panic on the Streets of Springfield” episode, which aired on Sunday. It saw Lisa Simpson create an imaginary friend named Quilloughby, who leads the band The Snuffs. Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, Quilloughby is a “depressed British singer from the 1980s” who may resemble the former frontman of The Smiths. While The Simpsons character may even look like the British rocker, the episode even features Morrissey-esque songs written by Flight of the Conchords‘ Bret McKenzie and Tim Long.

The Simpsons Season 32 Episode 19
The Simpsons Season 32, episode 19, ” Panic on the Streets of Springfield,” is one of the most pointed parodies the series has crafted in a while. It takes on pre-teen angst with the dry iced wit of an 80s anti-Brit-pop band. But it also follows a slow, sad slide into anguished irony.
I was looking for a laugh, then I found a laugh, and heaven knows I’m miserable now. My head hangs heavy with the pain of laughter. Not only does the episode strip Lisa of what appears to be perfectly suitable accompaniment for a life of lonely elitism, it also makes us all rethink Slapify. It may offer Millennial rock at Baby Boomer prices, but it teaches Lisa good taste is a curse.
The spiky haired, middle child is very picky about her music. After hating everything she hears, Slapify...

Stop me if you think you’ve heard this one before: Benedict Cumberbatch guest stars as a moody 80s-era UK crooner who becomes Lisa’s imaginary friend on this Sunday’s episode of “The Simpsons.” Variety has a first look at this Fauxissey as he gives his take on the citizens of Springfield; scroll down to watch.
In the episode “Panic on the Streets of Springfield,” Cumberbatch plays “Quilloughby,” described as Lisa’s “new imaginary friend — a depressed British singer from the 1980s.” Also in the episode, “Homer becomes a truck guy in the all.” Helping write music for the episode: “Flight of the Conchords'” Bret McKenzie.
Of course, it doesn’t take much to realize “Quilloughby” looks, sounds and acts like noted moody vegan Morrissey.

Disney movies have produced some classic songs over the years — and just over a dozen have won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
“When You Wish Upon a Star” — “Pinocchio” (1940)
The first song from a Disney movie to win Oscar glory is Jiminy Cricket’s ballad from “Pinocchio,” sung by Cliff Edwards.
“Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” — “Song of the South” (1947)
Allie Wrubel and lyricist Ray Gilbert’s song, based on a pre-Civil War folk song, is a catchy ditty in a film that has not been screened in decades due to its depiction of African American characters like Uncle Remus.
“Chim Chim Cher-ee” — “Mary Poppins” (1964)
Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews’ duet, written by the brotherly duo of Richard and Robert Sherman, continues to charm.

HBO’s harrowing 2019 miniseries “Chernobyl,” about the 1986 nuclear disaster in Soviet Ukraine, doesn’t make for ideal quarantine viewing material. Actor Diego Luna said he learned that the hard way during a recent Instagram live chat with IndieWire’s Eric Kohn, which touched on everything from Luna’s acclaimed run on Netflix’s popular “Narcos” series and the “Star Wars” saga to “Y Tu Mamá También.” But Luna also said his viewing habits took a dark turn right as the pandemic shut down the entire globe. The Flight of the Conchords star, who is guest curating the New Zealand festival, reflects on his career and the cost of compromise
Although he’s one of Wellington’s best-known pop cultural exports – as a musician, songwriter, actor and comedian – nobody makes a fuss when Bret McKenzie arrives in a central city cafe.
Fuss wouldn’t be entirely unwarranted. McKenzie’s portrayal of a particular type of socially awkward, deadpan New Zealander helped put the country’s dry humour on the map. And the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords – in which he performs with Jemaine Clement – so enraptured Hollywood that he could still be there if he wanted to, churning out season after season of the acclaimed TV show of the same name.

Who says the musical is dead? The last 10 years have been jam-packed with effervescent, hilarious and melancholy movie musicals for moviegoers of every kind. Whether they incorporate their songs magically into the narrative or simply break at every possible turn for another gangbusters performance, these films kept a song in our hearts and married their wonderful tunes to memorable, sometimes completely unforgettable storylines. To each of these incredible films we say, “Bravo.”
Runners-Up (alphabetically): “Anna and the Apocalypse,” “Get On Up,” “Frozen,” “Jem and the Holograms,” “The Last Five Years,” “London Road,” “The Lure,” “Moana,” “Pitch Perfect 2,” “Tangled”
10. “The Greatest Showman” (2017)
The life of circus entrepreneur P.T. Barnum was nowhere near as sappy and sanitized as it appears in Michael Gracey’s “The Greatest Showman.” But then again, selling tickets to see an entertaining lie because the truth is inconvenient and/or grotesque is entirely in keeping with Barnum’s modus operandi.

Once Stephen Colbert announced he was doing a week-long series of segments about his time in New Zealand, you just knew it was all building to this. Sure, Colbert got to learn rugby from the All Blacks, go drinking with Bret McKenzie and Lucy Lawless, and was picked up at the airport by the Prime Minister, but if…...

Stephen Colbert is heading down under! The Late Show is set to roll out a week of shows that will feature the host’s trip to New Zealand. The episodes will air on CBS starting November 18 at 11:35 Pm Et/Pt.
The idea for Colbert’s trip started in September 2018, when New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern appeared on The Late Show offering Hobbiton citizenship to Colbert, a J.R.R. Tolkien enthusiast. Hobbiton is, of course, a location in New Zealand where they filmed the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. On September 2019, Ardern returned to the show to make the invitation official. And with that, Colbert and his team journeyed to New Zealand in October.
Each night next week, Colbert will share videos that celebrate the island nation. Footage includes his interview with Ardern as well as a visit to Hobbiton with Lord of the Rings director-producer Peter Jackson...

Emmet Otter’s jug band is reuniting on the big screen: A movie adaptation of the classic Jim Henson holiday special Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas is in the works from Flight of the Conchords alum Bret McKenzie, according to our sister site Variety.
McKenzie will write the script and pen new songs for the film, which is based on the Canadian TV special that debuted in the U.S. in 1978 on HBO. (The project is still being shopped around to distributors.) He’s best known for playing one half of the Flight of the Conchords alongside Jemaine Clement on the 2007-09 HBO musical comedy,...

Flight of the Conchords’ own Rhymenoceros, Bret McKenzie, has signed on to pen the script and write the music for “Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas,” based on the 1970s ABC special from the Jim Henson Company.
Henson’s 1977 TV special was based on the children’s book of the same name by Russell Hoban. McKenzie also has the option to direct the new adaptation, which follows a poor otter family who risks everything for the chance to win the cash prize of a talent contest for Christmas, but a decision has not yet been made. The ABC special used the classic Henson puppet technology that made Henson’s “The Muppets” famous and even included an introduction by Kermit the Frog.
With McKenzie’s attachment, the package will be shopped to buyers, as no distributor is currently on board. The family movie will be a co-production between the Jim Henson Company,...

While CW’s tuneful sitcom “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is no more after four seasons, it earned a parting gift by claiming a Creative Arts Emmy for the song “Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal,” written by star Rachel Bloom and fellow nominees Adam Schlesinger and Jack Dolgen. Schlesinger has been nominated for an Oscar for “That Thing You Do” from the Tom Hanks-directed film and he received a 2012 Emmy for Best Music And Lyrics for the song “It’s Not Just For Gays Anymore,” the opening number of the 65th Tony Awards and a 2013 Emmy Award for Best Music And Lyrics for the song “If I Had Time,” the closing number of the 66th Tony telecast.

The comedy music duo Flight of the Conchords — New Zealanders Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie — have been gradually racking up kudos for more than a decade, but Egot is around the corner for one of them. They won a Grammy together for Best Comedy Album, and then McKenzie won an Oscar for his original song “Man or Muppet” from the 2011 “The Muppets” movie. Now they’re up for an Emmy at this weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, so if they’re finally awarded by the television academy, McKenzie will be three-quarters of the way to the showbiz grand slam.
The Conchords are nominated for Best Music and Lyrics for writing the song “Father and Son” from their HBO special “Live in London.” But this isn’t the first time they’re trying to win the favor of the television academy — far from it. Their series “Flight of the Conchords” ran...

Hulu will adapt Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy.
So long, and thanks for all the fish! The dolphins will once again be getting the hell off this awful globe in a new adaptation of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at Hulu. Disney owns the Hitchhiker’s Guide IP, so resistance is futile - not that the author himself, who passed away in 2001, would likely have much of a problem with it springing back to life again.
Carlton Cuse is at the helm of the developing series (via Deadline). The man behind Lost, Amazon's Jack Ryan, and Netflix's upcoming comic book series, Locke & Key, has teamed up with Wonder Woman writer Jason Fuchs for the project.

Beyoncé and Sara Bareilles could add Emmy trophies to their awards shelves this year, having been nominated in key music categories Tuesday by the Television Academy.
Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” special on Netflix was nominated in six categories, and four of those include a nod for the pop superstar herself. Only one of those is in a music category; she’s nominated for music direction of a variety special alongside co-music director Derek Dixie (a first-time nominee). Her other nods are as a producer, co-director and writer of the special.
Bareilles, nominated last year for her performance as Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” was cited this year as co-songwriter of a new song on CBS’s Tony Awards, “This One’s for You.” Her co-host on that show, Josh Groban, shares the nomination and is up for his first Emmy.
They were the most high-profile performers cited by Emmy voters in the seven music categories.

Songs For Screens: UTA’s Maxim Karlik Brings A-List Music Moments to ‘Aladdin,’ ‘Aquaman’ and Beyond
As co-head of UTA’s Music Crossover division, Maxim Karlik sits at a unique intersection of music, TV and film.
Serving as a conduit between UTA’s music clients, TV and film teams and showrunners and directors, Karlik has helped secure original song placements for artists including DJ Khaled (an update on “Friend Like Me” for 2019’s “Aladdin”), Muse’s Matt Bellamy (“Pray” for HBO’s “For The Throne” album) and Pitbull (“Ocean To Ocean” for 2018’s “Aquaman”); acting roles for DJ Khaled and Action Bronson (Netflix’s Martin Scorsese-helmed “The Irishman”) and composer roles for Phil Lawrence (Netflix’s Christmas musical “Jingle Jangle”), Bret McKenzie and Bo Burnham.
The common thread for each project, Karlik offers, is the ability to help musicians flex their creative muscles outside their known lanes. “I think songwriters get pigeonholed sometimes for their previous work,” he says. “I love when somebody gets a...

Jemaine Clement, the co-creator behind FX’s new comedy series, What We Do in the Shadows, is the latest to join James Cameron’s Avatar films in the role of marine biologist Dr. Ian Garvin. “I’ve loved Jemaine’s work for years and I’m really pumped that he’s joining our cast as Ian Garvin, one of my favorite characters,” commented Cameron.

This article marks Part 25 of the Gold Derby series analyzing 84 years of Best Original Song at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at the timeless tunes recognized in this category, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the winners.
The 2010 Oscar nominees in Best Original Song were:
“Coming Home” from “Country Strong”
“If I Rise” from “127 Hours”
“I See the Light” from “Tangled”
“We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3”
Won: “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3”
Should’ve won: “If I Rise” from “127 Hours”
Best Original Song in 2010 marked one of the most deadly-dull line-ups to ever grace the category, a sleepy, entirely unremarkable batch of four songs that is exceedingly difficult to select a favorite among.
Voters, faced with this anemic foursome, opted to go with Oscar mainstay Randy Newman, awarding him a second Best Original Song prize, this time for “We Belong Together.
