In 1998, prolific sci-fi novelizer and comic book writer Michael Jan Friedman penned a high-concept crossover novel called "Planet X."
"Planet X" took place in the same universe as "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and detailed historical events on a planet called Xhaldia. It seemed that Xhaldian citizens were suddenly developing eerie extrasensory abilities and mutating into strange, powerful creatures. Captain Picard and the U.S.S. Enterprise were called in to investigate. By a stroke of luck, the Enterprise encounters a rift in space leading to a parallel universe, and onto the Enterprise step the Uncanny X-Men of Marvel Comics fame. The X-Men offer insight into the events on Xhaldia, as it's very similar to what happened on Earth, at least in "X-Men" comics. I assure you, this novel is 100% real.

New times call for new heroes. And a time in which society’s been buried under a crushing financial crisis? Such a world needs heroes more than most. This is the world of a new prose anthology series known as Phenomenons.
“I remember the early days of Marvel Comics and how exciting it was to see the Avengers watch an appearance of the Fantastic Four on TV, or contact Doc Strange for advice,” says Michael Jan Friedman, the NY Times bestselling author and comic book writer who hatched the idea for Phenomenons. “Or at DC, how cool it was to see Superman and Batman go at the same problem from different angles. You got the sense that these heroes—and villains—all operated in the same frame of reference, and somehow that made it seem more real.
“Our heroes will be doing the same thing. Half the fun will be seeing them join forces,...

Star Trek is riding high at the moment. One big factor in its current popularity is the return of Patrick Stewart to the role of Jean-Luc Picard. While season 1 of Star Trek: Picard wasn’t perfect, it still reminded fans just how great The Next Generation characters were. So, with everyone buzzing with Enterprise-d fever, why not give us a show that explores the past of Jean-Luc Picard?
The interesting period is probably his time aboard the USS Stargazer, his first command. These days were explicitly referenced in Picard as some of the happiest and most satisfying in his life. Picard began on Stargazer as a Bridge Officer, later describing the ship as an “overworked, underpowered vessel, always on the verge of flying apart at the seams.” After the Captain died, Picard took the bridge and impressed Starfleet with his captaincy.
His subsequent time aboard Stargazer shaped his personality and diplomatic style,...

Crazy 8 Press announced it has agreed to release Zlonk! Zok! Zowie! The Subterranean Blue Grotto Guide to Batman ’66 – Season One, Jim Beard’s celebration of the 1966 classic Batman television series. This new collection of essays creatively examines each episode of the ABC series which aired during the first half of 1966.
Edited by respected comic book writer and essayist Jim Beard, the 208-page Bat-tastic collection will be released by Crazy 8 in April, both as a trade paperback and eBook.
“There’s still so much to say about this legendary TV series, and this book sets out to prove it,” said Beard, who also wrote the opening essay examining the two-part pilot episode.
The worldwide Batman TV series phenomenon starred Adam West and Burt Ward as the Dynamic Duo, adapting the DC Comics series to the small screen, riding the Pop Art and Camp craze that were trends during the turbulent 1960s.

Your name is Robinson Dark. The last thing you remember is fighting an alien invader that threatened to destroy your ship and crew.
But you’re not on your ship anymore. You’ve woken up on another vessel, in a uniform you don’t recognize, and the only other human being anywhere around is howling gibberish at the top of his lungs, heading straight for you.
You should be scared. Your heart should be pounding in your chest like an animal in a cage. But all you feel is… empty.

Turning 50 doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. In fact, those typical black-and-white “50 years old” party decorations, suggesting that the celebrant is “so old,” seem out of place to me. Fifty can be fun. Fifty can be optimistic. Isn’t Hollywood’s most famous re-invented party boy, Robert Downey, Jr. over 50? Isn’t the always-engaging Marisa Tomei over 50?
This year Star Trek turns 50 and the phenomenon never looked better. There’s a new movie, a new fascinating Star Trek podcasts out there. And now, more than ever, there’s top TV show and even new stamps from the U.S. Post Office. There’s a bunch of -notch merchandise from innovative companies like Titan and Eaglemoss.

Back in the ‘70s, plans for a “Star Trek” movie were underway by creator Gene Roddenberry. In a new excerpt from the book, “The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek – The First 25 Years” by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman, previous scripts by Roddenberry had Captain Kirk fighting against Jesus and even stopping the JFK assassination.
Ultimately both ideas were rejected by then Paramount boss Barry Diller and the studio continued to pursue new storylines. The Hollywood Reporter posted an excerpt from the book where author Michael Jan Friedman gave more detail of Roddenberry’s script.
“Gene was — and still is — one of my heroes, for God’s sake, no pun intended. As he had already left the land of the living, this was a unique opportunity to collaborate with him. But when I read the material, I was dismayed. I hadn’t seen other...

Gene Roddenberry was the genius behind Star Trek, but for the franchise to thrive he had to step away. There are tons of stories out there about how he was difficult to work with, how he butted heads with other creatives, and it got so bad that he was forced out of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Based on the stories I've heard, I would love to see a Gene Roddenberry biopic get made one day.
There's a new book out now called The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek – The First 25 Years. In that book, it's revealed one of Roddenberry's early scripts for Star Trek: The Motion Picture had a scene where Captain Kirk fights Jesus Christ.

We're a few weeks ahead of the release of "Star Trek Beyond," and a few months out from the Bryan Fuller-produced new "Star Trek" TV series. Between those events though comes the franchise's 50th anniversary with numerous related works tying into it including a new book from Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman which overs the first twenty-five years of the franchise - namely the original series, the six original cast films, and the launch of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".
An excerpt has just been released by THR covering one of the more interesting times in the franchise - the mid-1970s when it was effectively dead. At the time, Paramount decided to have a go at bringing the franchise to the big screen and asked creator Gene Rodenberry to come up with the movie treatment. The result was an infamous brief dubbed 'The God Thing', one in...

Odd List Shiromi Arserio 3 Oct 2013 - 07:00
Shiromi talks us through ten of the least expected sci-fi crossovers in the geek TV world...
Who would win in a fight? The crew of Babylon 5 or the crew of Deep Space Nine? While often reserved for the realm of fan fiction, two established franchises crossing over does happen from time to time. Typically you'll see this when the properties are owned by the same company, like Superman meeting Batman. While other times it's an intentional crossover of two very different properties like Star Trek characters crossing over into the X-Men universe. Yes, you read that right.
This list is devoted to the top franchise crossovers. I've tried to steer clear from shows that obviously exist in the same universe, like Tng characters showing up on DS9, or Buffy appearing on Angel, and instead focus on crossovers from separate franchises. Some of...

In promotion of M. Night Shyamalan’s next sci-fi blockbuster, After Earth, Sony have announced a big-scale mutli-platform project that will take shape in the coming months to generate early buzz ahead of the film’s release next summer.
Will and son Jaden Smith star in the leads, and we got our first look at the duo on set back in February.
“After Earth is set 1000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon.

Jj Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot is warping fans into a certain future of fresh adventures for the gallant crew of the Starship Enterprise. Filming on “Star Trek 2″ is well underway and will no doubt leave fans clamoring for more from Kirk and company when it boldly takes the franchise into the mainstream galaxy that no other Trek film could have hoped before.
With writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman having stated that they read many of the Trek universe books when creating the alternate timeline reboot, here are 5 Original Series (Kirk & Spock) novels that we’d like to see adapted to film in this new franchise.

As many recall, Peter David, Michael Jan Friedman and I have been writing bible material for 2013’s After Earth film starring Will and Jaden Smith. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, its set in the future and we’ve had a ball filling in gaps and expanding on concepts found in the script.
Early last week, Peter said we three were invited to the set in Philadelphia to watch one of the final days of shooting before production wrapped and headed out for location filming. How could we say no? I arranged a day off from student teaching and on Friday, we took a road trip south.
The Budd Studio has been home to other productions, including Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. A huge structure, it was home to various sets and departments. Upon arrival, we were given a tour of the sets, looking at where key scenes had been shot just days before.

Crazy 8 Press exists because the founders — Peter David, Michael Jan Friedman, Bob Greenberger, Glenn Hauman, Aaron Rosenberg, and Howard Weinstein — have found selling their original works to mainstream publishers increasingly difficult. Illogical barriers have been erected and the website was conceived to directly connect the authors with the readers.
The concept was conceived by Friedman at last summer’s Shore Leave convention and now, a year later, the site is officially open for business this afternoon. Its initial offering is an original novel, The Camelot Papers, which is unrelated to David’s previous Camelot trilogy. The novel is available in all eBook formats in addition to Print on Demand.
At a launch panel Saturday at noon, the founders will outline their plans for the future, addressing issues such as frequency, backlist, and if non-member authors will be published through the site. “It’s not a business,” Greenberger said. “It’s...

Seeking Spirits: The Lost Cases of the Atlantic Paranormal Society
By Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson with Michael Jan Friedman
Pocket Books, 272 pages, $16
One of the major successes of the Sci Fi Channel was the arrival of Ghost Hunters, a series focusing on the explorations into the paranormal as conducted by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson. The Roto Rooter plumbers turned their fascination with the otherworldly by creating Taps, the Atlantic Paranormal Society, based in Rhode Island. Along with other trained investigators, they have since 2004 been racking up terrific ratings for the channel. Other paranormal shows arrived, such as Destination Truth and the Gh spin-offs Ghost Hunters International and the forthcoming Ghost Hunters Academy. The investigators have become regulars on the convention circuit so you may have seen them.
Jason and Grant, though, have been investigating the supernatural since the early 1990s, first individually and then as friends and partners. As a result,...
