The more companions, the merrier!
Varada Sethu has officially joined “Doctor Who” Season 2 as the new companion of Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor — but she won’t be replacing current companion Millie Gibson, as previously reported.
In January, rumors swirled that Gibson, who made her debut as companion Ruby Sunday in the sci-fi show’s Christmas special, would not be returning for Season 2 after Gatwa was spotted filming with Sethu. However, it seems the three will take on time and space together in the second season, which is currently in production and slated to debut in 2025 on Disney+ worldwide and on the BBC in the U.K.
Sethu is best known for her role as Cinta Kaz in Disney+’s “Star Wars” spinoff “Andor.” She has also appeared in “Jurassic World Dominion,” “Annika” and “Strike Back.”

Millie Gibson is introduced as Ruby Sunday and apparently learns the secret of her birth in the latest teaser for Disney+’s Doctor Who Christmas special, which will bow on Dec. 25.

“Doctor Who” is looking back at its past. The long-running British sci-fi touchstone is celebrating its 60th anniversary with three new specials that bring back important figures from the show’s run, while making a big move outside the UK to Disney+. Now, the streamer has shared the full trailer for the 60th anniversary specials, ahead of their November premiere.
First premiering in 1963, BBC’s “Doctor Who” follows the titular Doctor, a mysterious adventurer from an alien Time Lord species who travels through the galaxy and time in his Police Box-disguised Tardis machine. Originally played by William Hartnell, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate into new forms upon death, and the character was portrayed by six other actors before the original run ended in 1989. After a 1996 TV film starring Paul McGann as the Doctor, the show was properly revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the lead. The series has...

Specials marking the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who have set their premiere dates.
The three specials, which will feature the return of David Tennant as the Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Temple-Noble, are set to roll out over three weeks beginning Nov. 25 — two days after the actual 60th anniversary of Doctor Who’s first ever episode. The specials will stream on Disney+ (which grabbed streaming rights to the series in 2022) worldwide with the exception of the U.K. and Ireland, where they’ll air on the BBC.
Disney+ has also released a new trailer for the specials, following a first trailer in September that showcased the saga’s main antagonist, Neil Patrick Harris’ Toymaker — a villain first seen on Doctor Who in 1966 in a now mostly missing run of episodes.
The specials find the Fourteenth Doctor (Tennant, who also played the Tenth Doctor from 2005-10) reuniting with Donna as they battle the Toymaker.

His Dark Materials is officially coming back for a third and final season.
HBO and BBC One have renewed the drama for a third run with the eight-episode season set to close the story. The latest season, which is based on Philip Pullman’s novels, begins production in Cardiff, Wales in 2021.
This comes as the second season of the Bad Wolf-produced drama concludes on Monday, December 28 on HBO.
Last month, Bad Wolf co-founder Jane Tranter told Deadline that Jack Thorne and a team of writers were working on scripts and that the series will be based on The Amber Spyglass. In January, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Deadline that he was particularly pleased that the drama had been a co-viewing hit with families.
The second season, which consisted of seven episodes due to Covid-19, follows Lyra, played by Dafne Keen, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world.

Lyra Belacqua’s story is getting a closing chapter.
HBO and the BBC have renewed “His Dark Materials,” the series adaptation of Philip Pullman’s classic novels, for a third and final season. The first two seasons have mirrored the books relatively closely, so it’s no huge surprise the show is being given one last outing to take a crack at “The Amber Spyglass,” the final book in Pullman’s trilogy.
News of the renewal comes less than a week after the season 2 finale is set to drop HBO, and only two days after the curtain call aired in the U.K. Production on the eight-episode third season is slated to begin in Cardiff in 2021.
In its second season, “His Dark Materials” continues to follow the adventures of Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen), her daemon Pan and her terrifying mother Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson). Lyra’s path has become deeply...

Michaela Coel, Lenny Abrahamson’s “Normal People” and “The Masked Singer” were among the winners of the U.K.’s Royal Television Society (Rts) Craft & Design Awards.
Coel won the 2020 Rts special award for her groundbreaking BBC/HBO show “I May Destroy You.” In presenting the award to Coel, the judges said: “This piece sits in the true spirit of the craft and design Awards. The astonishing level of detail in all aspects of this production was humbling to see. A truly distinctive, highly creative and exemplary piece of work, in which the winner had also corralled outstanding demonstrations of expert craft skills across all the production disciplines.”
Lenny Abrahamson won best director of drama for smash hit BBC/Hulu show “Normal People.” “Beautiful, stylish and confident. This was the work of an elite director, skilfully providing the space for his actors to shine and their chemistry to transmit through the lens.

The terrible problem of creating sets for film and television, says His Dark Materials production designer Joel Collins, is that the very best work is invisible. “When you build a world that isn’t real but looks real, everyone thinks you didn’t do anything! You must have just stayed at home or popped along to Oxford and dialled it in.”
“Or you just went to Italy,” laughs Framestore VFX Supervisor Russell Dodgson, whose team are responsible for, among many other computer-generated elements, His Dark Materials’ daemons.
To make Cittàgazze, one of season two’s big new locations, the team didn’t just go to Italy. They went everywhere, borrowing styles and inspiration from around the world and bringing it home to a backlot in Cardiff, where the spiralling town was built from scratch.

His Dark Materials series two hit our screens on Nov. 16, and there's one question we've all been asking: where on Earth was it filmed?
Cittàgazze, aka The City of Magpies, is one key setting within the Philip Pullman franchise, and it's no surprise that finding a suitable location to mirror its majestic nature on screen proved to be a little harder than anticipated. Speaking to Radio Times, the show's production designer and executive producer Joel Collins revealed that "I looked at 120 different towns, went by Bonn, France, Italy, Morrocco, Croatia, Spain other kind of European places. The research for Cittàgazze both environmental and for real towns was exhausting."
As a result, the crew decided to go in a different direction and build an entire town from scratch at Bad Wolf Studios in Cardiff, Wales. The set itself took approximately six months to build and resulted in a number of convincingly winding streets,...

His Dark Materials will be back with a bang in November as the HBO and BBC big-budget co-production returns for its second season.
HBO will launch the second season of the Bad Wolf-produced adaptation of the Philip Pullman books at 9 p.m. November 16. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
This comes as the team behind the series, which includes writer Jack Thorne, are prepping scripts for a possible third season. Although a third run hasn’t been commissioned, the hope on all sides is for it to run for more seasons.
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Deadline earlier this year that the first season had performed very well for the network and that he would like to do more. “One of the things that I was hoping for, and the numbers we’re seeing bear this out, it is more of a co-viewing show than we’ve ever had.

Each season of the sci-fi anthology series “Black Mirror” contains six standalone stories. Every episode is set in a distinct future world, often shot in a different location from the other episodes. Each installment has its own director and production crew, including department heads.
“They are their own individual films and they are structured like that [because it] allows them to have their own unique vision and feel,” said co-showrunner Annabel Jones in an interview with IndieWire. “We structure them as their own individual films and they are all produced independently, so the only continuity over the six are me and [creator-writer co-showrunner] Charlie [Brooker] and our series production designer, who is making sure they look all distinctive.”

While the beauty of “Black Mirror” is its standalone anthology storytelling – well, that and its creepy-dark tales of tech innovations gone wrong – once the show got a season under its belt, it started to have a little fun within the world that Charlie Brooker had created. Episodes could feature references to past episodes, either as news stories on the telly or using technology that had been introduced previously.
It’s an ingenious way to give back to devoted viewers at the same time inspiring repeat viewings to catch all the references or experience the original episodes in a new way. As IndieWire’s Steve Greene noted, the season finale of Season 4, “Black Museum,” feels like a fitting end to the entire series, partly because of its narrative structure, but also because of its many nods to past episodes within the confines of the museum.

Making a brand new world with no rules that feels alien to our own is always a challenge in any film or TV enterprise. Making one that feels just close enough to reality is as daunting as it is unsettling. So the fact that “Black Mirror” has done that in most (if not all) of its now 19 installments is one of the more impressive recent achievements in the TV landscape.
One person who knows more than most about how these new worlds get created year after year is “Black Mirror” production Joel Collins. Serving in that capacity for every episode of all four seasons, Collins has been one of the creative engines behind the series’ visual look.
The constant, episode-to-episode changing may be daunting, but that challenge is part of the allure of the series. In fact, that variety has meant that over the 19 chapters, Collins has had the opportunity...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers follow for the “Black Mirror” Season 4 episode “USS Callister.”]
The first episode of “Black Mirror” Season 4 might be its most brilliant. Playing with tropes established by shows like “Star Trek,” it tells the story of a frustrated and petty programmer (Jesse Plemons) who imprisons those he feels have wronged him in a virtual game world. The longest episode of the season, “USS Callister” creates multiple realities that come together to tackle not just a journey of the bullied becoming the bully, but an overall climate that has become incredibly toxic… but with some hope for true change.
IndieWire spoke with “Callister” director Toby Haynes, production designer Joel Collins, and stars Plemons and Cristin Milioti to learn everything we could about how the episode came together, including how much work the Shatner impression took and how they got Aaron Paul for the episode’s final moments.

When it comes to awards, below the line nominations often go to the boldest and most obvious examples of craft. The inventive red robes are the iconic image of the dystopian world of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The lavish sets and intricate set dressings of real locations capture the grandeur of royal life in “The Crown.” The evocative fantasy world and epic battles are VFX creations that make “Game of Thrones” like no other show on television.
All of these are elements of craft that are worthy of recognition – except, this year “Game of Thrones” won’t be back until July and that means someone else will take home a VFX trophy. More importantly, there are plenty of other examples of below-the-line artistry that are less obvious by design, and play an equally important role in storytelling.

Following the release in March of ‘A Man Called Gannon’ (1968), Simply Media in the UK continue to release more Universal-International westerns, this time of 1940s and ‘50s vintage. The new releases, out on 18 April, are ‘Calamity Jane & Sam Bass’ (1949), ‘Cattle Drive’ (1951) and ‘Black Horse Canyon’ (1954). This trio of films are literally ‘Horse Operas’, with the accent on thoroughbred steeds and their importance and role in the working west. Be they cattle drovers, stock breeders or outlaws, where would any of them be without the horse? The answer, of course, is walking.
I’ll review the DVDs in the order I watched them. First up is ‘Cattle Drive’, a 1951 western directed by Kurt Neumann. Chester Graham Jnr (Dean Stockwell), the spoilt, arrogant son of railroad magnet Chester Graham Snr (Leon Ames), is accidentally left behind when the train he is travelling on makes a water stop.
