Season 1 of Squid Game landed in 2021 like a bombshell, becoming Netflix’s most-watched series ever. It wasn’t just a show; it was a cultural phenomenon. By the time Season 2 rolled around, expectations were sky-high. While it broke records, it didn’t quite grab the world by the throat the way its predecessor did.
Was it too much competition from other streaming hits? Or just the challenge of following an iconic debut? Either way, Season 3 has shaped up to be the series’ final act, and I’m already pacing with anticipation. Will Gi-hun finally dismantle the games? What’s the deal with those stolen organs? And can we get some closure for, well, anyone?
Here’s my wishlist of everything I’m dying to see when Squid Game returns. Get ready for wild theories, emotional reunions, and maybe even a few deaths that’ll leave us sobbing into our popcorn.

It is needless to say that Netflix knows how to captivate viewers. Bring in all-consuming greed, heartbreaking drama, and completely twisted minds, and you have fans hanging onto some of the most successful Netflix series ever. Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Korean dystopian series, Squid Game, is not just a display of gory games and shocking deaths, but it also shows the daunting sides of humanity and the lack thereof. The idea of democracy is turned upside down and deeply entangled with mind-boggling capitalism. While Lee Jung-jae’s Gi-hun doesn’t care about money and is solely dedicated to ending the games, there is a dark theory surrounding the fate of Player 456.

This article contains Major Spoilers for Squid Game Season 2.
Seong Gi-hun failed to overturn Squid Game in Season 2. Actor Lee Byung-hun teased all is not lost, however.
Squid Game Season 2 ended with a shocking upset. Audiences feared Seong Gi-hun's revolt would ultimately fail with Hwang In-ho / the Front Man secretly among them. Gi-hun learned a hard lesson in the Episode 7 cliffhanger, when the Front Man emerges to execute Jung-bae. The season featured multiple villains including the Recruiter, Im Jeong-dae, and Choi Su-bong ("Thanos); the Front Man is by far the most insidious, inserting himself into the games and Gi-hun's group. Actor Lee Byung-hun told Tudum this had an unexpected impact on Hwang In-ho; Lee teased Gi-hun might win In-ho over before the series finale.

Whenever viewers react well to a TV show, it feels like a second season is practically inevitable, although sometimes it is better to follow the motto that less is more. A one-off miniseries can often be far more compelling than a show that artificially continues its narrative well after the story requires it, and it showcases a real sense of artistic integrity when creators and showrunners bow out while leaving the audience wanting more. These are all shows that had incredible first seasons but dropped the ball in season 2.
While all of these shows would have been better if they never got a second season, that’s not to say that the later episodes were totally without value. Of course, many viewers will have a great fondness for these shows' underwhelming second seasons, and just because they couldn’t live up to the original is not a reason they should be dismissed entirely.

This article contains Major Spoilers for Squid Game Season 2.
Squid Game Season 2's wildest twist came in Episode 3, which revealed the Front Man is now Player 001. Fans argue there's a high-roller from Season 1 that also wants skin in the game.
One Squid Game fan noticed that Park Min-su in Season 2 and VIP #3 (Deer Mask) are played by actors with identical names. "I did some digging and found that the actor that plays Min-su is David Lee and in Season 1, the actor that played VIP #3 is also named David Lee," according to the Reddit post. "They kind of look similar, so I thought it was the same person but I'm not sure. Maybe two different people with the same name?" This stoked speculation over Min-su's true identity, with some fans commenting that would be an insane plot twist coming into Season 3. However, others dug deeper in an attempt to validate the theory.

Warning: Minor spoilers for Squid Game.
Squid Game finally returned for its second season at the end of December 2024, and the wildly popular Netflix series once again showcased the lengths people will go to for money. Taking place a few years after Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) managed to walk away with the big cash prize, the newest season kicks it up a notch and doesn’t disappoint. However, this time, the narrative goes beyond the scope of the games themselves. While viewers are certainly privy to the show’s deadly challenges, this season chooses to focus more on Gi-hun’s efforts to dismantle the entire operation and take down the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) once and for all. That being said, there’s still plenty of blood and gore littered throughout Season 2.
However, the latest season drops one of the most disturbing aspects of the first season, and that’s not a bad thing.

Netflix's Korean thriller series Squid Game became a massive success in its first season back in 2021, standing out amidst the streamer's fellow K-dramas for its uncompromising action and scathing satire of life under capitalism. It was a rare series that managed to be surprisingly brutal, darkly funny, and genuinely thought-provoking all at the same time.
So when Season 2 finally dropped three years after Season 1, it came with a lot of anticipation. Season 2 not only had to hold onto what made Season 1 such a hit, but even surpass it. And judging by the response so far, it seems they may have pulled it off. One way series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk achieved this was by adding a new target for the series' satire: the democratic process itself.

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk expected the backlash against a casting update in June 2023. Squid Game depicted the eternal struggle between predestination and free will in the guise of twisted children's games. Season 2 doubled down on the premise but mainly focused on the actual tournament.
Squid Game Season 1 revealed the people pulling the strings in the later episodes, confirming the game was sponsored by the rich and powerful. This hinted there are similar events in other locations, even though the show only depicted the Squid Game Island tournament. Season 2 shifted gears with its storylines, however, focusing on the Squid Game's hierarchy and internal operations. In an interview with BuzzFeed, actor Lee Seo-hwan noted Season 2 was missing a key component; there were no scenes of the VIPs, who were likely watching everything, including Gi-hun's mutiny attempt. Lee said director Hwang Dong-hyuk replaced the VIPs with the Netflix audience.

Hwang Dong-hyuk previously confirmed he's willing to let Squid Game end with that cliffhanger, allowing Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) to reunite with his family. The overwhelming reception for the show greenlighted Seasons 2 and 3, allowing him to flesh out In-ho's backstory.

But in “Squid Game” Season 2, which dropped Thursday, the unexpected involvement of head game guard The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), whose real name is In-ho, is handled quite differently when he joins the games as Player 001 upon Gi-hun’s reentry into the competition.

When Squid Game season 2 premieres, it will have been over three years since the first season hit Netflix like a freight train. It sounds outrageous the streamer waited this long to follow up the international hit, but it's the norm. When Stranger Things season 5 premieres, it will have been roughly three years as well. Apple TV+'s Severance returns in January, nearly two years since the first season debuted to critical acclaim.
When released in 2021, Squid Game exploded and became a bonafide word-of-mouth phenomenon. It's still the most-watched Netflix series of all time—even Wednesday and Stranger Things season 4 weren't able to topple it. Bloomberg reported in October 2021, just one month after the show's release, that Squid Game could add $900 billion in value to Netflix.

Quick Links What Is 'Squid Game' About? Hwang Dong-Hyuk's Post 'Squid Game' Experience Why Ending 'Squid Game' After Season 2 Could Be a Good Thing
Following a three-year absence, the hotly anticipated return of Netflix's landmark TV series Squid Game returns for Season 2 on December 26, 2024. After captivating the world during the global pandemic lockdown, Squid Game became so successful that the next two seasons were immediately green-lit, written, and shot back to back.
However, days before the Season 2 premiere, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk joked that he was already sick of the series and may leave the franchise, possibly withholding Season 3 from the masses if he becomes too tired of the universe he's built. While Netflix has become nearly synonymous with quantity over quality binge-watching, one of the smartest things the streaming platform could do is end Squid Game before it grows stale and overstays its welcome.

Squid Game's breakout success spawned a multimedia franchise of video games, immersive experiences, a reality show, and tie-in merchandise. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared the reason he wants to detach from spinoff projects despite the overwhelming reception.
Netflix began hyping the Squid Game Season 2 premiere in October. Squid Game: The Experience offered fans the opportunity to dive into the lore with a walkthrough entertainment installation. By December, the streamer ramped up promotions with tie-in events in Paris, Seoul, and Los Angeles. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed Netflix has more Squid Game projects on the horizon. Squid Game broke the mold of survival thrillers with its discordant themes and gray characters. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk imagined an MCU crossover and bet on one Avenger as the likely winner.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said Tony Stark has a shot at winning the deadly competition. The Avenger would have to lose the Mark Armor, however. "Iron Man — without the suit," Hwang told People. As one of Marvel's smartest heroes, Stark seemed an easy bet, but the MCU has plenty of contenders. The Avengers have the cunning Natasha Romanoff, agile Clint Barton, and the genius Bruce Banner. Thor and Steve Rogers are likely out of the running as overpowered players. Even though an MCU - Squid Game crossover is a remote possibility, Hwang's comment is fodder for fan fiction; one Reddit user already proposed a multiverse story featuring characters from Hazbin Hotel, My Hero Academia, and Harry Potter.

David Fincher and Squid Game are not two names you expect to find in the same sentence. That's why fans were confused and intrigued when the Fight Club and Seven director was announced to helm a new American spin-off from Netflix's hit South Korean series. However, no one was as confused as Hwang Dong-hyuk, who claims he was never told about the spin-off.

Squid Game's new rule will give players more agency in Season 2. The showrunner said this twist is also a social commentary on democracy and the majority vote.
Players can vote to stop the game between rounds in Squid Game Season 2. "I want to highlight the theme of taking sides," creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told THR, asserting that the next batch of players will now have more control of their outcomes. He hinted that could be problematic rather than advantageous, however, considering how the first Squid Game played out. He described the recent election as "the ultimate O-x event", referring to the buttons players pushed to end the game early in Season 1. The Squid Game was cancelled by majority vote after the "Red Light, Green Light" round, although many later returned (out of desperation) to finish the game and win the money pot.

After season 1 chronicled Gi-hun's journey through a lethal competition involving children's games to win a cash prize, Squid Game season 2 is confirmed to continue his story later this year. Season 3 has also been confirmed, and it will serve as the show's final outing next year.
In a recent interview with THR, Hwang shares a progress update on Squid Game season 3, revealing that it's surprisingly far along in the production pipeline. According to the creator, he's "nearly done with the editing portion of season three." As for why Hwang decided to end Gi-hun's story with season 3, he explains that it ultimately feels like the natural end point of this particular character's tale.

Squid Game fans are eager for the new season to drop, three years after the show's premiere. The latest Season 2 trailer builds anticipation with a heaping dose of new reveals.
Netflix has released a new trailer for Squid Game Season 2, confirming Seong Gi-hun (played by The Acoyte's Lee Jung-jae) has returned for another round of the deadly games. The trailer revealed Gi-hun actively interfering with the rules by spoiling the Red Light, Green Light's mechanics to new participants. This hints the new round would have used the same games Gi-hun previously participated in, but the latter's interference would force the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) to overhaul the tournament. Brief sequences also offer glimpses of police detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), who survived the fall from Season 1 and is back to expose the operations.

Seong Gi-hun's jumpsuit number hints he's going to survive the next Squid Game, in keeping with the many speculations about Season 1. The new Season 2 trailer confirmed that all the Squid Games commence with a default batch of 456 contestants, and Gi-hun (played by The Acolyte's Lee Jung-jae) is the last player in the count (game mastermind Oh Il-nam was player number 1 in Season 1). Gi-hun will no longer be a powerless pawn in Season 2, however, as he's now rejoined the game to infiltrate the Front Man's operations. Netflix ramps up promotion for Squid Game as the Season 2 premiere approaches. A new poster drops to reveal a new round of games has commenced with a fresh crop of desperate contestants.
Netflix's new Squid Game poster suggests a new children's game will be added to Season 2's elimination rounds. The image depicts a masked guard dragging an eliminated (i.e. dead) contestant, as competitors watch the clean-up from outside a rainbow-colored threshold. It's possible the poster is just a symbolic representation of the Squid Game's underlying themes, but Season 1 proved the show's plot twists are hidden in plain sight; audiences are at fault for not looking hard enough. The poster's catchphrase "The game will not stop" also confirmed it's business as usual, despite Oh Il-nam's death in Season 1; the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) is still the gamemaster and the Recruiter (Gong Yoo) has now delivered the next batch of contestants.
