Squid Game fan favorite Anupam Tripathi has signed with CAA in all areas, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.
The Indian actor moved to Korea on an arts scholarship and for the next decade worked mostly in small parts onscreen and stage until he landed his first major role in what became a global sensation for Netflix. As Ali Abdul (aka Player No. 199), the sweet and trusting Pakistani migrant worker trying to earn a living for his wife and infant child, he had to speak broken Korean with an Urdu accent (whereas in real life, the actor is fluent in Korean and Hindi).
Tripathi is now a SAG Award nominee, sharing the nomination for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series with the rest of the Squid Game cast — the first such nomination for a series not in English.

To anyone who has watched Season 1 of Netflix’s “Squid Game” from the very beginning, it may have been obvious what the final game in the deadly competition would be, because it’s right there in the name of the show.

The society we have collectively forged has become so tragically flawed, and yet, it is also an inescapable construct.
These were some of the ideas flying through my head when I first conceived of Squid Game as a feature film more than a decade ago. Why write about poverty, strife, desperation and capitalism? Well, because I know this story all too well; I remember only having 5 in...

But for far too many, life is like some extreme competition show where the penalty for losing is far graver than being kicked off of an island or voted out of a house.

Anyone who thought the “Tug of War” from Episode 3 of “Squid Game” would be the most challenging or deadliest of the games in Netflix’s Korean thriller series, may not have been prepared for “The Glass Bridge” in Episode 5. Gold Derby’s fifth exclusive “Making Of” video shows how this episode was created with thoughts from a few of the creatives and actors.
In this game, the remaining players have to walk across a pathway of “glass stepping stones” stretching high across the ground, carefully choosing between two options. One glass panel is strong enough to hold the weight of a human, the other panel cannot. As the contestants choose, they either move forward safely or go crashing through the glass down to the floor below.

At first, the game of “Marbles” from Episode 4 of Netflix’s Korean drama “Squid Game” might seem like a slight comedown after some of the more elaborate previous games. And yet, a relatively simple game of marbles leads to one of the show’s most devastating episodes, because each player picks their partner for the game, unaware they’ll have to compete against that person. The loser in this game of marbles dies.
In the latest “Making of” exclusive video provided by Netflix (watch above), Park Hae-soo, who portrays Cho Sang-woo, talks about how “Marbles” became the most memorable game for him, partially due to the way the set recreates the Korean village backstreets and alleys the actor remembered from growing up. “I felt a strange mix of emotions, nostalgia, and tension,” he says about filming Episode 4.

“Thankfully, filming ended without many injuries,” reveals stunt coordinator Park Young-sick about getting through the Netflix blockbuster “Squid Game” relatively unscathed. “The actors were very active in participating in all the action scenes,” he explains for our recent webchat, adding that they “had to be mixed all together to play all these games and the actors were wearing the wires themselves and were part of the action scenes themselves, so they were very active and they actually enjoyed the experience as well.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Gold Derby’s third Making of “Squid Game” featurette involves the deadly game of Tug of War that creates an incredible climax for the third episode of Netflix’s Korean survival series (watch the exclusive video above). The game forces the contestants to form groups to play Tug of War high above a steep drop. That episode builds up to a shocking (and almost literal) cliffhanger ending, which helped viewers understand that no one competing in the game is safe.
Executive producer, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk states, “I thought it would be a little boring if all the games took place on the ground, and there’s that intimidating feeling about heights.” The Tug of War game also allowed Director Hwang and his cast to explore the dynamics between the players “as they form teams and allies.”

“Squid Game” premiered on September 17, 2021 and became an instant worldwide hit for Netflix. The Korean-language survival drama tells the story of 456 down-on-their-luck citizens who agree to play a series of children’s games in order to win a monumental cash prize. The twist is that the games come with deadly consequences for those who lose … and most of them lose. On January 12, 2022, the cast was nominated for the best drama ensemble prize at the SAG Awards, a first for a non-English language TV series. Two of the show’s stars, Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon, were recognized for their individual performances as Seong Gi-hun and Kang Sae-byeok, respectively.
In all, 10 “Squid Game” cast members received bids as part of the ensemble. Meet the nominees by scrolling through our photos above. (Editor’s note: We are using the specific spellings of the actors’ and characters’ names as they appear on the SAG Award ballot.

“Squid Game” boasts one of the biggest TV casts of all time, with a whopping 456 people taking part in the iconic “Red Light, Green Light” challenge in the first episode. Then there are the workers, the VIPs, the cops, the loved ones back home, etc. Understandably, most of these folks are extras and therefore not eligible for awards. But Netflix has revealed to Gold Derby that 10 actors are in fact eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards (see the list below).
