What the Waters Left Behind is a slasher film from Argentina. Shot in Epecuen, this location was once a town that was flooded and left the inhabitants homeless. In 2018, brothers Luciano and Nicolas Onetti filmed their general remake of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre here. One of the best slashers of the last few years, What the Waters Left Behind centrally stars: Agustín Pardella, Damián Dreizik, Victoria Maurette and a few others. Now, Unearthed Films will release this compelling feature, this Spring. In the story, a group of filmmakers document the remaining shambles of Epecuen. Here, the floodwaters have receded, showing the remains of old shops and apartments. However, one family remains on the premises, patrolling the area for food. Unfortunately for these documentarians, this family has targeted them for a human buffet! Unearthed Films will show the film in May. On May 12th, What the Waters Left Behind...

*full disclosure: this reviewer has promoted this film through online marketing, previously. Directors/writers: Luciano Onetti, Nicolás Onetti. Cast: German Baudino, Paula Brasca, Mirta Busnelli, Victorio D'Alessandro and Victoria Maurette. What the Waters Left Behind is a slasher film, from the Onetti brothers. Known as Los Olvidados (The Forgotten) in Argentina, this title lifts the story of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) for a South American audience. Though, horror fans in North America will be able to see What the Waters Left Behind, on Amazon Prime, this month (Oct. 26th). This release is full of horror tropes. From a freaky gas station to a cannibal family, you have likely seen this film before. Still, the Onetti brothers have chosen a few interesting locations, including an entire destroyed city. And, the filmmakers admit that they have been influenced by American cinema, including Hooper's earlier effort. What the Waters Left Behind is.

A small documentary film crew is heading to the city of Epecuen, Argentina. Lost to surging flood waters back in 1985 the town has been abandoned for over thirty years. One of the survivors from the town, Carla (Victoria Maurette), will be the subject of the film. Though she was very young at the time, she lived in the town with her grandmother and provides the insight they want for their film. After a hardly pleasant exchange with the locals at a gas station the crew head into town and begin filming. But their vehicle breaks down, stranding them long enough to learn that a family of psycho killers have taken up residence in the deserted town. Split up around the city the crew...

While I’ve seen more than a few indie horror anthologies of late—some good, others forgettable—the anthology film seems to be making a comeback. Like the classic George Romero/Stephen King Creepshow (1982) and the impending The ABCs Of Death due out later this year, The Theatre Bizarre (2011) is one of those films that lives up to its buzz….and fans’ expectations. Six shorts linked by framing scenes make up The Theatre Bizarre, a film being distributed by Severin Films.
The film’s opening and framing segments, directed by Jeremy Kasten (Wizard Of Gore {2007}) titled “Theatre Guignol” star the wonderfully bizarre Udo Kier as a life-size marionette and story teller in an abandoned theater. Title: The Theatre Bizarre Directors: Jeremy Kasten, Richard Stanley, Buddy Giovinazzo, Tom Savini, Douglas Buck, Karim Hussain and David Gregory Starring: Udo Kier, Catriona MacColl, Virginia Newcomb, Suzan Anbeh, Andre Hennicke, Debbie Rochon, Tom Savini, Lena Kleine, Victoria Maurette, Lindsay Goranson, Guilford Adams Six discrete stories of varying levels of effectiveness come together in “The Theatre Bizarre,” a macabre horror anthology that eschews the laborious weirdness of something like Christopher Landon’s “Burning Palms,” and instead focuses more forthrightly on crafting and sustaining a mood of uneasiness. The main commingled narrative ingredients are genre staples — sex, compulsion, paranoia and obsession – which work well for a movie that doesn’t shy away from...

Albert Pyun's long gestating Tales of an Ancient Empire has been picked up for distribution by Liongate, but apparently the version we'll all be able to see starting January 24th isn't exactly the director's own vision for the film so he's decided to release the first 18 minutes of his cut for comparison's sake. Check it out!
Synopsis:
The sword and sorcery epic, written by Cynthia Curnan, tells the story of a princess forced on a quest to recruit the greatest warriors of the ancient world to save her kingdom from a demonic sorceress. But the odyssey to find them reveals a secret past for all.
Michael Pare plays "Oda", father of Kevin Sorbo's character - Aedan - as well as Victoria Maurette's Kara (via Whitney Able's Xia - the vampire sorceress). He also fathers Princess Tanis (Melissa Ordway) and Rajan (Janelle Taylor) amongst others. The film...

In promotion of its festival run, we've nailed down the first bit of nifty character art by Rob E. Brown from Albert Pyun's latest film Tales of an Ancient Empire. Dig on the eye candy below!
The flick stars Michael Pare, Kevin Sorbo, Victoria Maurette, Melissa Ordway, Janelle Taylor, Cazzy Golomb, Sasha Mitchell, Olivier Gruner, Norbert Weisse, and Scott Paulin.
"Mainly, I know the film is unique as we've strived the past three years to create something different and a bit off the wall," says Pyun. "It's certainly an original and twisted take on the sword and sorcerer genre."
The next screenings for Tales of an Ancient Empire will be at Combat Con in Las Vegas - June 25 at 7:30 Pm at the Tuscany Hotel, then it begins rolling out across North America (with confirmed stops in Honolulu, Southern California, Detroit, San Francisco, Louisville - FrightNight Fest, and B...

Many things are happening for Albert Pyun's latest film Tales of an Ancient Empire, and they are all good. The flick has landed some new players, some new eye candy, and even some solid distro. Read on for the details.
In terms of casting Pyun dropped the following on us:
Michael Pare plays "Oda", father of Kevin Sorbo's character - Aedan - as well as Victoria Maurette's Kara (via Whitney Able's Xia - the vampire sorceress). He also fathers Princess Tanis (Melissa Ordway) and Rajan (Janelle Taylor) amongst others. The film is about how Oda's womanizing has created both the extreme good and evil in the world. And how parental abandonment colors each character's life and behavior. And Sorbo's character - Aedan - has a child with his half-human/half-vampire half-sister Kara - Hekate - played by newcomer Cazzy Golomb. Hekate narrates Tales and becomes one...

Forget Tron: Legacy, one of my most anticipated sequels to be released this year is the (very) long-awaited sequel to 1982’s The Sword and the Sorceror, Tales of an Ancient Empire.

It's been 28 years since Albert Pyun released his debut The Sword and the Sorcerer, a film many cult fanatics consider to be a seminal 80s fantasy romp up there with the likes of Milius' Conan, Don Coscarelli's Beastmaster and, heaven forbid, James Sbardellati's Deathstalker (editor's note: for a good time also see Fulci's Conquest). For his next film, Pyun returns to the genre that launched his career and the world he created in Sats. It's called Tales of an Ancient Empire, it stars Kevin Sorbo and it's already available to order on DVD. Oh yeah, and here's the first trailer.
Synopsis:
A princess is on a quest to unite the five greatest warriors to save her kingdom from a demon sorceress and her vampire minons.
Pyun fans know how much energy he has put into Tales, beause he's been taking them throught the whole process on his blog at albertpyunmoies.

For some the Easter holiday was a time of work, not hunting for chocolate eggs and bunnies, and one such individual is director Albert Pyun, who dropped us a line over the weekend with an update on his Tales of an Ancient Empire along with a batch of new stills.
According to Pyun, "All the shooting is now finished, and here are some new stills. The first is from one of the last shoots with Victoria Maurette ("Kara") and Jessica Delgado ("Levana"). This is a set still and not how the scene looks in the movie, but it's pretty cool. Second is a green screen shot of the three primary assassins after Sorbo and company. It's not composited yet but is still a nice visual. Next is Dernier (Xavier Declie) being seduced by Kara. This is followed by Delgado as Levana, Maurette's Kara being turned, and finally, Maurette in full vampire assassin mode.

Albert Pyun is extremely happy with how his sword and sorcery epic, Tales of an Ancient Empire, is shaping up. Below are some words he recently published on his official site:
"It’s clear to me that Tales of an Ancient Empire is by far the best film I have ever made. Yeah, I know I’ve said that before because each film I’ve made had some aspect, maybe it was a performance, a camera move, a turn of character, but there was always something, some moment, big or small that made it my best at the time. But looking at Tales from all sides and being as objective as I can possibly be, each moment of the film, consistently represents my best work.
How I know this as being true is that it doesn’t even seem like one of my films. No moment of cringe; no lapse in logic or sanity,...

You can look forward to some final screenshots at the end of next week when we conclude the effects shooting. Final key art will be available by April 9th, and we should have the trailer ready by the 12th.

Gotta love a man with a sense of humor.
Back in 2001 Albert Pyun assembled one of the stranger casts ever and attempted to shoot an action movie with them in just eleven days. In the cast? Steven Seagal, Tom Sizemore, Dennis Hopper, Ice-t, Nas, Jaime Pressly and Chilli from Tlc. The movie itself was called Ticker and was immediately relegated to the bargain bin.
Most directors would bury any material related to a film like this and hope nobody noticed. But not Pyun. While digging through his archives while preparing the crazy special issues of his films - the recently released Bulletface spanned five discs - Pyun came across a behind the scenes reel from the shoot and offered it up for public viewing here at Twitch.
Oh ... and that poster to the left? Not Ticker. That's new character art for Pyun's upcoming Tales of an Ancient Empire featuring his...

Director Albert Pyun sent us over a peek at some new teaser art for his forthcoming Tales of an Ancient Empire featuring its newest co-star, Victoria Maurette, who portrays a daywalking vampire assassin in the film.
Never one to shy away from graphic sex and violence, Pyun promises the following from Maurette's character: "Victoria is really playing a different vampire -- a creature who is aroused by perverse violence and is sexually gratified by inflicting ritualistic torture on her victims.
I don't think there's been a more frightening character in fantasy films. She's not a villain; she's a psychotic and depraved killer."
A brief synopsis of Tales of an Ancient Empire, which also stars Christopher Lambert, Melissa Ordway, Kevin Sorbo, Lee Horsley, and Jennifer Siebel Newsom, is as follows: A princess (Ordway) is on a quest to unite the five greatest warriors to save her kingdom from a demon sorceress.

Tales of an Ancient Empire just got a huge dose of badassedness in the form of a female daywalking vampire assassin to be portrayed by Victoria Maurette. Maurette joins the film's previously announced cast that includes Christopher Lambert, Melissa Ordway, Kevin Sorbo, Lee Horsley, and Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
The news came down from director Albert Pyun's official website, where you can also find a photo of Maurette in training in Buenos Aires for her role. She has previously appeared in two of Pyun's films: Left for Dead (review here) and Bulletface.

He may very well be the longest running cult director in America today and now, thanks to a new relationship with Curnan Pictures, his films are hitting DVD in a series of lush multi-disc packages. We're talking about Albert Pyun, the director of Cyborg and The Sword and the Sorcerer, and one of his latest efforts - Bulletface - is about to be released in a whopping five disc set.
Included on the set are Bulletface itself with director commentary, a soundtrack CD and a host of other Bulletface special features. Wondering what fills the other discs? Those would be dedicated to another entire feature - what Pyun calls the Inferno version of Left For Dead, his horror western also featuring Bulletface star Victoria Maurette - plus that film's complete soundtrack.
Sweetening the pot even further, for a limited time Pyun and co are offering up copies of Bulletface at a 50% discount to Twitch readers!

We've been telling you about Bulletface, Albert Pyun's latest neo-noir thriller, for a while now, and finally he's provided us with a trailer so you can check it out for yourselves.
Synopsis:
The story is set along the Mexico/California Border, principally in Imperial Beach, CA. It concerns a female DEA agent, Dara Maren, who, in protecting her petty criminal younger brother, gets herself arrested and imprisoned in a nightmarish penal colony outside Tijuana. You can guess how bad it gets in there -- prison officials even harvest organs from the inmates. While she's in prison, Dara's brother is murdered by a drug lord who's creating a new DNA-altering drug made from human spinal fluid tapped from the living.
Hundreds of dead bodies are turning up along the Border, and the drug addicts become something not quite human. The drug is so addicting that even law enforcement and government officials are on the stuff.

Along with providing us with the contest info, Pyun shared his motivation for directing Bulletface:
"Why did I want to make Bulletface? Well, when I first read Randall Fontana's script, I was drawn to the way he created a kind of throwback to the B-movie noir crime thrillers of the 1940's and 50's.

Over the holidays we heard from director Albert Pyun, who informed us that instead of his next release being Tales of an Ancient Empire, his long gestating follow-up to The Sword and the Sorcerer, it will be the gory and disturbing Bulletface written by Randall Fontana.
Pyun and Fontana first worked together on Hong Kong 97 back in 1994. Here's how Albert describes Bulletface, which he also promises is more sexually explicit than his other films and not for the faint of heart: [It] is a departure for me because of how gritty and hardboiled it is. We've just learned that Tales of an Ancient Empire will not be the next film released from director Albert Pyun. Rather Bulletface, Pyun's revenge fueled, scifi pot-boiler is expected to hit in late January while Tales heads into a final round of post.
Pyun is also telling us to expect something very different from the project: "Bulletface is a departure for me because of how gritty and hardboiled it is. Its a very taut horror/sci-fi film with a plot that twists and turns and it's more sexually explicit than my other films and is not for the feint of heart."
Victoria Maurette, who was in Pyun's Left for Dead plays Dara, a female DEA agent who, in protecting her petty criminal younger brother, gets arrested and imprisoned in a nightmarish penal colony outside Tijuana that's so brutal, prison officials even harvest organs from the inmates.
