Charter member of the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1973.
She developed a pioneering operation in 1944 which solved the often
fatal "blue baby" (children born with an anatomical heart defect)
problem, saving countless infants.
She became the first president of the American Heart Association in
1965.
Instrumental in stopping the use of thalidomide for pregnant
women.
