'Rabbit Trap' Review: A Sonic Horror with Dev Patel
Image
There are several moments in Rabbit Trap when the boundaries between sound and space, dream and reality, begin to fray. Sound is not merely an element of the film’s atmosphere — it is its driving force, the unseen terror pressing in on the psyche of its characters. Bryn Chainey’s debut feature is a folk horror film, an erotic thriller, and an experimental meditation on the relationship between perception, memory, and fear. At its core, Rabbit Trap explores the eerie interplay between human connection, artistic obsession, and nature’s ability to resist control.

‘Rabbit Trap’ Review: Dev Patel Tampers With Ancient Magic In Bryn Chainey’s Asmr Folk Horror — Sundance Film Festival
Image
In British writer-director Bryn Chaney’s feature debut, he uses Celtic folklore and the intimacy of sound to unpack a darkness that some might struggle to put in words.

Set in 1973, Rabbit Trap stars Dev Patel and Rosy McEwen as Darcy and Daphne, an influential musical couple from London who retreats to an isolated cabin in the Welsh countryside to finish their next album. But when Darcy records a sound not meant for human ears, he accidentally conjures ancient mystical beings from the forest.

Best viewed in Dolby, the film utilizes hypnotic sounds in every scene, largely through the field recordings made by Darcy in the surrounding woods. In addition to sounds of dripping water, clanging metal and crunching grass, Darcy demonstrates how the medium is sacred as he explains that “sound is a ghost … and your body is the house it haunts.”

After recording strange sounds in the forest,...

Sundance in Cincinnati? Hollywood Worries Film Festival Won’t Be the Same Without Park City
Image
Cole Webley, a Salt Lake City-based director, spent decades dreaming of premiering one of his films in Park City. The Utah native has attended the Sundance Film Festival for nearly 20 years, waiting in long lines as the snow fell around him, shivering in the cold in hopes of catching a hot new movie. He’d also tried and failed to get five of his short films into competition.

“To say that I had an affinity towards the festival would be an understatement,” Webley says. “It’s been the pinnacle of what I had hoped to achieve.”

This year, Webley finally gets his wish. “Omaha,” a drama about a struggling father embarking on a cross-country trip with his two daughters, will debut on the first day of Sundance. The inclusion of “Omaha” is meaningful to him in other ways. The film was largely shot around Utah with a local crew, so...

Image
Writer/director Kyle Edward Ball’s experimental micro-budget horror film Skinamarink proved to be quite divisive when it was given a theatrical release last year, followed by a release through the Shudder streaming service. Some viewers found the movie to be terrifying, while others found it to be mind-numbingly boring… but regardless of the response, it was made on a budget of $15,000 and earned over $2 million during its theatrical run, so it was a financial success. Now, Variety reports that Ball has set up his next horror film, teaming up with A24 to bring us something called The Land of Nod.

Ball will be writing and directing The Land of Nod, but plot details are being kept under wraps for now. All we know is that it’s a horror project that will be distributed by A24, and that it’s being produced by Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Josh Safdie...

Jerry Lewis Remembered By the Director of His Last Lead Role
Jerry Lewis
He was 82 when we met, and I was 36. My producer, Lawrence Inglee and I, had driven to San Diego to discuss him playing the titular character in the movie I was directing, “Max Rose.” A week before, we had giddily listened to the phone message he’d left us perhaps 150 times. Since word of his interest had gotten out, we’d received multiple warnings that Jerry Lewis was a monster who would make our lives miserable. As we nervously approached the ramp to the boat where he awaited us, we discussed strategies for dancing with the devil, agreeing it would be worth it so long as we got the performance.

The Dinner
How far will the new American aristocracy go to protect its privileges? Oren Moverman’s intense four-way war of wills is sourced from a novel but shapes up as an intense stage piece in a chi-chi restaurant interrupted by flashbacks and other stylistic flourishes. The acting foursome is excellent, with Steve Coogan a standout as a truly disturbed character. Four adults debate their sons’ high crimes and misdemeanors over designer cuisine.

Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe in Swiss Army Man (2016)
Why Two Female Producers Decided to Make a Buddy Movie About Farts
Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe in Swiss Army Man (2016)
Miranda Bailey is the producer of “The Diary of a Teenager Girl,” “Don’t Think Twice” (coming out later this month) and “Swiss Army Man,” which opens wide today. She is the CEO of Cold Iron Pictures, a production/financing company based in Los Angeles. She offered the following thoughts on one of her latest credits, “Swiss Army Man.”

What I’m about to tell you may come as a shock to you: Girls Fart, Too. That’s right, you heard it here first and we think it’s pretty funny also. That said, farting is not the reason Amanda Marshall and I decided to produce and partially finance “Swiss Army Man.” If you’ve seen the movie, you know it’s about two men stranded on an island where one of them is a corpse who constantly flatulates. You may be thinking, what on Earth would two women see...

2016 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Ido Fluk’s The Ticket
We got no qualms with being flat out wrong with our predictions set, but we’re thinking we might sort of still be in the know with this prediction…perhaps a full year too early. With production having taken place in 2014, we can imagine that Israeli-born/NYC-based/Tisch Ido Fluk reserved 2015 for post prod activities such as color mixing and working the score with now considered veteran Sundance attendees in Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans (Nasty Baby). Starring Dana Stevens in the lead, with a supporting cast that includes Malin Akerman, Kerry Bishé, and Oliver Platt, The Ticket now sports a longer list of producers and is definitely a title to look out for in ’16.

Gist: Written by Fluk and Sharon Mashishi, this is the cautionary tale of James (Dan Stevens), a blind man who miraculously regains the sight he lost at age 13. In doing so he loses his moral compass,...

2016 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert’s Swiss Army Man
Receiving wall-to-wall support from the Sundance Institute participating in a fivesome of labs all in 2014 (the January Screenwriters Lab, Directors Lab, Music and Sound Design Lab at Skywalker Sound, Creative Producing Summit and finally, the June Screenwriters Lab), music-video director (Foster the People and the Shins) tandem Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert made ’14 a true year to connect with the Sundance folk by submitting Possibilia (a 16 parallel universe world with Zoe Jarman and Alex Karpovsky playing tumultuous lovers) in the New Frontier section. Featured in Filmmaker Magazine Top 25 Faces, production on Swiss Army Man took place this past July and surely got submitted in rough form. While their trio noteworthy topliners in Daniel Radcliffe, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Paul Dano suggest a certain clout, it’s the equal promise of visual cleverness (see this hypnotic award-winning video) and wide-ranging possibilities for where they might take the genre (it may draw comparisons...

Anne Hathaway, Keanu Reeves To Star In Shane Carruth's The Modern Ocean
The American Film Market (Afm) began today in Santa Monica, California, and one of the first announcements out of the gate was casting for Shane Carruth's upcoming feature The Modern Ocean. Fans of Carruth (such as myself) have loved his past films Primer and Upstream Color not only for their enigmatic stories, but also for the independent spirit and creation behind them.So it comes as a bit of a surprise to see a list of names who will be starring in the film. Not only Anne Hathaway and Keanu Reeves, but also Daniel Radcliffe, Chloe Grace Moretz, Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Abraham Attah, and Jeff Goldblum. Carruth will also star, as in his previous films. Lawrence Inglee of Blackbird, Eyal Rimmon of Tadmor, and Carruth's...

Daniel Radcliffe, Anne Hathaway And Keanu Reeves Hit The High-Seas For The Modern Ocean
If indie filmmaker Shane Carruth (Primer, Upstream Color) is keen to make a lasting first impression at tomorrow’s American Film Market, he’s certainly assembled the star-studded cast to do so. Not content with lining his upcoming maritime drama The Modern Ocean with the likes of Chloe Grace Moretz, Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Jeff Goldblum and Beasts of No Nation scene-stealer Abraham Attah, today brings word that Carruth and FilmNation have attracted Daniel Radcliffe, Anne Hathaway and John Wick star Keanu Reeves for the motion picture.

Set against the hyper-competitive market of shipping routes and the intense, all-consuming rivalries they spawn, The Modern Ocean is certainly a sprawling adventure on paper, and reports state that Carruth’s script is a 200-page tome replete with diagrams and various annotations. Billed as an “epic tale, fraught with danger and intrigue, takes us from the ancient trading houses of Algeria to the...

The storyline revolves around vengeance and the fierce competition for valuable shipping routes and priceless materials that converge in a spectacular battle on the decks of behemoth cargo ships.

Most have been enticed by Carruth's 200-page script which is said to contain a bunch of pictures and diagrams. The story will run from the ancient trading houses of Algeria to the darkest depths of the ocean floor according to FilmNation who is selling the project at Afm this week.

Carruth, Lawrence Inglee and Eyal Rimmon will produce.

Afm: FilmNation, Shane Carruth chart ‘The Modern Ocean’
Glen Basner
Glen Basner and his team have added a second prestige title to their market slate in the form of Shane Carruth’s all-star adventure-drama.

Anne Hathaway, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Radcliffe, Chloë Grace Moretz, Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Abraham Attah from Beasts Of No Nation and Jeff Goldblum will star.

The Modern Ocean is styled as an intrigue-filled tale set against the backdrop of the ferociously competitive global shipping route industry. Wme Global represents Us rights.

Carruth, the esoteric indie darling who made a name for himself with Sundance dramatic grand jury prize winner Primer and followed that up with Upstream Color, will also star.

Blackbird’s Lawrence Inglee, Carruth’s erbp Film and Tadmor’s Eyal Rimmon are producing.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Shane on this project,” said FilmNation svp of sales Tara Erer. “He is clearly one of the most exciting and inventive filmmakers working today. He has created...
