Indian Contender ‘2018’ Director Talks Oscar Campaign, Unveils New Missing Ship Thriller (Exclusive)
Jude Anthany Joseph, director of India’s international feature Oscar contender “2018,” has started work on his next film.
The untitled investigative thriller is being written by the filmmaker alongside journalist Josy Joseph. The film is based on the true story of Kerala Shipping Corporation’s cargo ship Mv Kairali that disappeared in 1979 with a crew of 49 and 20,000 tonnes of iron ore on board while sailing from Margao, India to Rostock, Germany, via Djibouti.

Meanwhile, “2018” screened at the ongoing International Film Festival of India (Iffi), Goa and the producers threw a lavish party to celebrate the film’s progress. The survival drama based on the climate change-caused floods that...

Mumbai, Sep 1 (Ians) Former India cricketer and ex-head coach Ravi Shastri believes that Rohit Sharma’s team has the upper hand in the upcoming Asia Cup game against Pakistan. However, he acknowledged that Babar Azam-led side has significantly improved and has “closed the gap” with the Indian team in recent times.
India will open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday in the third match of the tournament at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo on the eve of the match, Shastri said that India have their strongest lineup since 2011 and have an experienced captain in Rohit Sharma, which will be a massive advantage for the side.
“I would say India start as favourites. This is their strongest team since 2011, this mix of players. And a captain who is seasoned, who understands the terrain better than most.

New Delhi, Aug 22 (Ians) Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir rejected ex-head coach Ravi Shastri’s idea of having three left-handers in the squads for Asia Cup and World Cup, emphasizing that players should be picked on form rather than whether they are left or right-handed.
Earlier, Shastri had suggested that India should consider including three left-handers within their top seven batting positions for the upcoming Asia Cup and the Odi World Cup to add variety to their line-up.
Speaking to Star Sports on the Selection Day show, Gambhir said: “If he has been picked (Tilak Varma), then of course he should get some matches to play. And if he gets game time and performs better than other batsmen, then you should definitely take him in the squad. Because, as I’ve said earlier, form is important. New Delhi, Aug 18 (Ians) After completion of Virat Kohli’s 15th year of international cricket on August 18, his childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has made a telling statement about his favourite ward.
Considering his fitness level and prime form, he is quite sanguine that Kohli will play for at least five to seven years at the highest level.
“Virat is God gifted. He was always the most special cricketer ever since he came to my academy. Whoever saw him, they knew that he would go far. It is his talent and hard work that took him to where he is today. His work ethic is something which every youngster should learn. God has also given him good technique, cricket knowledge on how to make runs. On this day, I can only wish that he continues for another five to seven years and does well for the Indian team,” Rajkumar told a...

New Delhi, Aug 18 (Ians) Former India cricketer Sandeep Patil stated that he would like to go with Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav if he was choosing the teams for the upcoming Asia Cup and Men’s Odi World Cup.
With question marks still high over Shreyas Iyer and Kl Rahul reaching full fitness in time for the two big events due to their back and thigh injuries, there has been an increase in clamour for the selection of Suryakumar and Tilak, who is yet to make his Odi debut.
“100 per cent (if India should hand a debut to Tilak Varma?) I will go with Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav. Who will be in the playing XI, can be decided after looking at the balance and the opposition. But Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav will both be in my team,” said Patil, a former chief selector, to Star Sports.

With the Asia Cup 2023 on the horizon, the Indian team management and selectors are in the midst of intense discussions to determine the best players for the top seven positions in the lineup. As of now, the team’s configuration seems to lack a sense of certainty and stability.
Notably, a decision is pending regarding who will partner with Rohit Sharma as the opening batsman, with both Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill being strong contenders for this role.
Meanwhile, former India coach Ravi Shastri has provided insightful perspectives on the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and the Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Speaking on Star Sports Selection Day show, Shastri spoke about where Ishan Kishan will feature in the batting line-up for the Asia Cup 2023 and the impact the seasoned player Shikhar Dhawan has had on the squad and how the team missed in the 2019 World Cup campaign.

New Delhi, Aug 16 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has suggested that India consider including three left-handers within their top seven batting positions for the upcoming Asia Cup and the Odi World Cup in order to add variety in their line-up.
Speaking with Star Sports, Shastri suggested Ishan Kishan as the wicketkeeper, who has been involved in the Indian Odi setup for a considerable duration. In addition, the management could also consider including youngsters either Tilak Varma or Yashasvi Jaiswal.
“There are three other positions where I think two left-handers have to come in, apart from the top four you mentioned. Now this is where the selectors’ role comes in because they are watching. They know who’s the guy who’s hot. If Tilak Varma is hot, bring him in. If you think Jaiswal is hot bring him in,” Shastri said.

New Delhi, Aug 16 (Ians) Former India coach Ravi Shastri has revealed that he contemplated the idea of sending Virat Kohli into bat at the No. 4 position during the 2019 Odi World Cup to diversify the batting lineup, which was heavily skewed towards the top order back then.
Referring to Kohli’s performance at the number four position, where the star batter amassed 1767 runs at an impressive average of 55.2, Shastri pointed out that his intention was to ensure adaptability in the top four positions.
“If Virat has to bat at four, he will bat at four in the interest of the side. You know, there were times I thought of it. Even in the previous two World Cups, when I was coach in 2019, I thought I might have discussed that with Msk [Prasad] as well of him batting at four just to break that top heavy line up,” Shastri said in a chat...

New Delhi, Aug 6 (Ians) When Rahul Dravid took over as India’s head coach, he was seen as a ‘crisis man’ by fans and experts, who expected him to bail Team India out from all the off-field controversies and also end the Icc titles drought. However, his tenure as a coach so far has been very disappointing and has invited severe criticism before the upcoming Odi World Cup.
Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri as India’s head coach after a successful stint as the head of cricket at Nca, where he oversaw a successful India U-19 and A tour programme. He was initially hesitant to take on a coaching role with the senior team full of stars, but he was convinced by Bcci officials and he later accepted the job.

London, June 10 (Ians) India opener Shubman Gill’s dismissal, caused by a one-handed catch by Cameron Green in the second innings of the World Test Championship (Wtc) Final at The Oval here on Saturday has triggered a widespread debate on whether the ball had touched the ground or not.
Gill was out when Boland extracted an outside edge off his defensive prod, and the ball flew low to Green’s left at third slip. The tall all-rounder took out his left hand and took a one-handed screamer, with the third umpire Richard Kettleborough adjudging it as a clean catch after viewing multiple replays of it.
As soon as the ‘out’ decision was shown on the giant screen, Gill and India skipper Rohit Sharma were left unconvinced by the decision as tea was taken immediately, with fans debating whether the batter was out or not, as well as if Green had...

London, June 9 (Ians) As he returned to action in the longest form of the game after a gap of more than a year, experienced middle-order batter Ajinkya Rahane achieved a milestone — becoming the 13th Indian batter to score 5000 or more runs in Test cricket.
Rahane, who played his last Test against South Africa at Cape Town in January 2022, struck a half-century to rescue India from a precarious 151/5 at the end of the second day’s play in the World Test Championship Final against Australia at The Oval here.
The 25-year-old from Maharashtra, who was batting on 29 overnight, completed his half-century off 92 deliveries and went on to share a vital partnership of 109 runs for the seventh wicket with all-rounder Shardul Thakur

London, June 9 (Ians) Former India coach and captain Ravi Shastri is very disappointed by the manner of Cheteshwar Pujara’s dismissal in India’s first inning against Australia in the World Test Championship Final at The Oval and said the experienced batter should have applied himself better.
Pujara attempted to leave the ball from Cameron Green which swung in and crashed into the stumps, leaving the batter looking dejected as the stumps went down tumbling. Pujara got out for 14 and what would have disappointed the Indian team management more was that opener Shubman Gill too got out in a similar fashion, against Scott Boland, a few overs earlier.
Shastri said Gill is young and will learn from the mistake but he expected better shot selection from Pujara, who has spent the last few months in England, playing County cricket for Sussex, scoring three centuries and a half-century since April 2023.

London, June 5 (Ians) Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes that although the conditions might be closer to Australia’s liking, it gives the Pat Cummins-led side only a slight advantage over India ahead of the World Test Championship final starting from Wednesday at The Oval.
“If you look at this venue you would think it’s a bit more like an Australian venue than it is an Indian venue. But when I thought back about that I thought well, hang on, last time India were actually in Australia they played our conditions really well, didn’t they?”

Bharat was the wicketkeeper for India in this ye’r’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy series with Rishabh Pant still recovering from injuries suffered in a serious car accident last year. Bharat got mixed results with bat and gloves as India won the series 2-1 to enter their second straight Wtc final.
Apart from him, left-handed wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan is there, drafted only after K.L. Rahul was ruled out due to a right thigh injury. “I think Bharat will be a pretty straightforward choice because playing Ishan Kishan in his debut and a Test match straight in the World Test Championship Final...

New Delhi, May 24 (Ians) India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has called for patience with prodigious young talent Yashasvi Jaiswal and believes that the talented batter doesn’t need to be fast-tracked into Odi setup especially for the Icc Mens Cricket World Cup this year.
Jaiswal shot to prominence when he topped the run charts at the 2020 Icc Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup and the 21-year-old has already replicated that form with some standout performances at the Ipl for the Rajasthan Royals.
Calls have been made for Jaiswal to be parachuted into India’s 50-over squad for this year’s World Cup on home soil, with former national coach Ravi Shastri recently suggesting the youngster could push for selection if injuries do arise to key players in the lead-up to the event. But Karthik is not sold on the idea.

New Delhi, May 24 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri reckons the Rohit Sharma-led side could include both Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the playing eleven for the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia, set to be played at The Oval from June 7-11.
Apart from ace off-spinner Ashwin and top-ranked all-rounder Jadeja in the 15-player squad, India also have the services of left-arm spin all-rounder Axar Patel.
“If the track is hard and dry, you would want two spinners to play for sure. I think it goes a lot with the weather in England. I believe it’s sunny now at the moment, but you know, English weather, how it can change in the month of June. So there’s a very good chance India will go with two spinners, two fast bowlers and an all-rounder. That will be the combination. And then there’ll be five batsmen and the wicket-keeper,...

New Delhi, May 23 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed his combined Test XI, selecting players from the two Icc World Test Championship finalists, India and Australia.
As the build-up to next month’s Wtc final between India and Australia at The Oval intensifies, Shastri faced the unenviable task of naming his best combined XI.
Former India head coach admitted he found the task a difficult one due to the sheer amount of world-class players on both sides. But, he stuck his neck out and settled on a final XI with four India stars and seven from Australia making the cut.
The 60-year old is a long-standing supporter of Rohit Sharma and said the India captain gets the nod as skipper over Australian counterpart Pat Cummins and wins a spot as one of the two openers as a result.

New Delhi, May 21 (Ians) Former India cricketer Ravi Shastri has backed out-of-form Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma to do well in the must-win Ipl 2023 game against Srh and reckons the fellow Mumbaikar needs no extra motivation to come out of his lean patch because he knows how to make comebacks.
The last two games of Ipl 2023 league stage, set to be played on Sunday, are crucial as the result of these matches will reveal the fourth qualifying team of the tournament. That fourth team will take on Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator.

New Delhi, May 20 (Ians) Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh opined young Rinku Singh was the X-factor for Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) this season and not star all-rounder Andre Russell.
Rinku has been the standout performer for the two-time Ipl champions. He has scored 407 runs in 13 matches this season at a strike rate of 143.31 and an average of 50.88.
“Now Rinku has become the X-factor for Kkr, not Russell. Russell’s era is gone. It’s Rinku’s time now. Even if Rinku is sent up, he can do justice to his role. He is a player of different calibre and we will soon see an India cap on his head,” Harbhajan said while speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live.
Meanwhile, former India chief coach Ravi Shastri said that Rinku is the star of the Kkr team and has a very strong attitude.

New Delhi, May 18 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has selected Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rinku Singh as the young batters that have impressed him in ongoing Ipl 2023 and feels that the two left-handed batters can present a late case for being part of this year’s Men’s Odi World Cup in case the national side is hit by further injuries.
“One is (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, simply because of the way he’s played this season. And for me it is a marked improvement from what I saw from him last year, which is a very, very positive sign.”

The 21-year old Jaiswal has been in sensational form in Ipl 2023 and has scored 575 runs in 12 matches with an average of 52.27 and strike rate of 167.15.
The left-hander will look to continue his red-hot form as Rajasthan Royals host Royal Challengers Bangalore in the day game at Jaipur on Sunday. It also will be a battle for the Orange Cap between Rcb captain Faf du Plessis (576) and Jaiswal during the game.

Mumbai, May 12 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri reckons it will be an emotional homecoming for Gujarat Titans’ skipper Hardik Pandya, who achieved stardom playing at Wankhede for the Mumbai Indians, but added that defeating five-time champions in their backyard has always been tough for visiting teams.
Friday’s match will see Mumbai’s batting might, who have chased down 200+ scores in their last three games, facing a stiff challenge at home from table-toppers Gujarat’s strong bowling line-up.
“Hardik’s homecoming will be emotional. He will play a crucial match against the team at the ground where he rose to stardom. Hardik would like to prove a lot by leading his team to victory.”

Kolkata, May 12 (Ians) Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh reckons Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is forcing the national selectors to take notice of his talent and give him an India call-up, post his record 13-ball fifty in a stunning nine-wicket takedown of Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.
Chasing 150, Jaiswal began like a high-speed Ferrari as he scored 50 in just 13 balls, including smacking 26 runs in the opening over off Nitish Rana. In the process, Jaiswal reached the quickest fifty in Ipl history with the help of seven fours and three sixes, surpassing the previous record of a 14-ball half-century in the tournament scored by K.L. Rahul in 2018 and Pat Cummins in 2022.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal isn’t just knocking at the doors of the Indian Cricket Team, he seems to be breaking it with his consistently good performances. He’s carried his imperious form of domestic cricket into Ipl. What a talent he is!

Mumbai, May 8 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes Rohit Sharma’s challenges as skipper of five-time Ipl winners Mumbai Indians “have doubled” in the few years, citing the change in personnel in the team.
The addition of two new teams ahead of Ipl 2022 meant Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya went to Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants respectively, while Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard called time on their Ipl playing careers.
Mumbai’s issues also increased with Jofra Archer unavailable in Ipl 2022 due to long run with injuries and is still finding his rhythm in Ipl 2023, with Jasprit Bumrah ruled out this year due to long-standing back injury.

New Delhi, May 5 (Ians) Former India coach Ravi Shastri believes that cricket is heading towards football’s way of functioning and warned that the players in future will be only interested in playing global events like World Cups.

Rajasthan, after losing to Mumbai Indians in their last match by six wickets, will be hosting table-toppers Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Friday. Both teams, which faced off in Ipl 20222 final in Ahmedabad, are the front-runners in the Ipl 2023 playoffs race.

New Delhi, April 30 (Ians) Chennai Super Kings host Punjab Kings at Chepauk in the day game of Ipl 2023 on Sunday. It will be the 999th game of the T20 league and the Ms Dhoni-led side will be aiming to return to winning ways after facing a big defeat in Jaipur.
Punjab Kings also suffered a big defeat against Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring game at home in their previous encounter on captain Shikhar Dhawan’s return.
Csk’s biggest strength this season is the way their batters are firing and the way skipper Ms Dhoni is leading them by optimising his resources to perfection.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar praised Dhoni for the way he’s managing his teammates, as well as himself because the knee injury seems to be pestering him constantly.
Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Sanjay Manjrekar said, “Ms Dhoni is a clever cricketer. He knows his limitations.

New Delhi, April 28 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes having an experienced campaigner like veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane in the squad for the World Test Championship (Wtc) final against Australia should come in handy, citing the need for a team to have its most experienced players in a one-off big game.
On Tuesday, Rahane earned a recall into India’s Test squad by being named in the squad for the Wtc final, to be held from June 7-11 at The Oval in London. He was last seen playing a Test match for India against in January 2022 and was left out since then due to a dip in form, despite leading the side to an unforgettable 2-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph in Australia.
“Absolutely, it’s a one-off big game, like the Super Bowl, and you need your experienced player. Don’t forget just two-and-a-half years ago, the man won a Test series in Australia.

New Delhi, April 22 (Ians) Friendships will take a back seat on Blockbuster Saturday as Ipl prepares for two mouthwatering contests. New Delhi, April 12 (Ians) After Mumbai Indians’ (Mi) six-wicket win over Delhi Capitals (DC), former Indian coach Ravi Shastri said that Rohit Sharma soaked the pressure and led from the front, adding that his innings will help him maintain a positive mindset for the remaining games in the Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023.
After disappointing innings in the first two games, skipper Rohit roared back to form with a brilliant knock of 65 off 45 as Mi won a roller-coaster game against DC off the last ball of the match on Tuesday.
“He soaked the pressure because that’s what the senior players can do. They have been in those situations before; they have the experience and that’s why he said it in the last game that it’s important to step up to the party. He led from the front and it will do him a world of good, captaining the side as the tournament progresses,...

New Delhi, April 10 (Ians) Former India cricketer and coach Ravi Shastri feels rising star Shubman Gill, who is playing for Gujarat Titans in Ipl 2023, can break Virat Kohli’s historic record for most runs in a season.
Notably, former India and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Kohli holds the record for scoring the highest runs in Ipl in one season. He had scored 973 runs for Rcb across 16 matches in Ipl 2016.
“He has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs. I feel it is Subhman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays top of the order. So he will get a good number of opportunities to score runs. The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point of time only he will already have 300-400 runs,...

New Delhi, April 10 (Ians) Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri believes that Lucknow Super Giants captain Kl Rahul can take chances to attack up front and convert them into big scores but with a rapid approach in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) on Monday.
Rahul, whose run-tally from the last four seasons is 616, 626, 670, and 593, has registered scores of 8, 20, and 35 in the Indian Premier League 2023 so far at a strike rate of 103.28.
“I think he (Kl Rahul) will aim to play a big inning but with a rapid approach. With the presence of Kyle Mayers, Stoinis and de Kock yet to come, Lsg have a powerful batting line-up. So, Kl Rahul can take chances,” Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo.
The former cricketer further lauded Rahul’s opening partner Kyle Mayers, who has scored 139 runs in three games, with two back-to-back half-centuries.

Mumbai, March 17 (Ians) India’s wicketkeeper batter K.L Rahul on Friday credited his batting partner Ravindra Jadeja’s presence in the middle for making things a bit easier as the left-hander’s entry broke the shackles of the Australian bowlers in the first Odi at the Wankhede Stadium here on Friday.
Rahul said the key to batting in such conditions is good footwork and said he played proper cricketing shots as he struck an unbeaten 75 and raised 108 runs for the unfinished sixth wicket partnership as India defeated Australia by five wickets to take 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Jadeja came up with a superb all-round performance, hitting an unbeaten 45 after claiming 2-46.
With pacers Mohd Shami and Mohd Siraj taking 3-17 and 3-29 respectively, India bowled out Australia for 188. They were in trouble at 83/5 after skipper Hardik Pandya got out but Rahul and Jadeja guided them to a well-deserved victory.

Bengaluru, March 13 (Ians) Mohammed Siraj has been an integral part of India’s pace battery since the epochal tour to Australia during the 2020-21 season. But that position has not come without its share of struggles.
Siraj was in Australia for his first Test tour when his father, Mohammed Ghaus, passed away and had to tackle the emotional phase to concentrate on cricket on that trip.
While speaking on Rcb Podcast, Siraj said he would cry in his room often while staying inside the bio-bubble and also detailed how he handled the racism episode on that Down Under tour.
“In Australia, nobody could visit other players’ rooms as we spoke on video calls. But Sridhar sir (former India fielding coach R Sridhar) used to call often asking how are you, what have you eaten etc. It was a good feeling and my fiancé was also talking to me (over phone) at that time.

Ahmedabad, March 9 (Ians) Australia’s left-handed opener Usman Khawaja stated getting a century in India was very special for him as it was something which he wanted to tick off as a Test cricket playing batter.
After Australia elected to bat first on a nice batting pitch, Khawaja kept his calm, played late and with soft hands to hit 15 fours in his 251-ball stay for a fine 104 not out. It is also Australia’s first century of the ongoing tour, which came on the last over before stumps.
“It was a lot of emotion in that. I have been to India on two tours before this, and carried the drinks in all eight Test matches. It was a long journey, and to finally get a hundred in India, as an Australian, that’s what you want to do, it’s what you want to tick off, so it’s very special,...
