The film, which received many accolades including the official Indian nomination for the Oscars, was screened at the International Film Festival of Kerala (Iffk).CrisScreenshot from 'Pebbles'During the most tense moments in Pebbles, the little boy leading the film wears a quizzical expression, watching his angry dad with an open mouth and furrowed brows. The unpleasant journey from the dad's native place to the mother's must not be new to him as it is to you, the viewer. He rests his schoolbag in a shed, picks up a toy for his baby sister and leaves with the dad who looks ready to beat everyone up at the slightest hint of offence. The film, which received many accolades including the official Indian nomination for the Oscars, has real life inspirations. Director Ps Vinothraj spoke about it after the first screening of Pebbles at the International Film Festival of Kerala (Iffk). The...

There’s an old trick known by people who live in dry places: put a smooth pebble in your mouth and it will trigger the secretion of saliva, making your mouth feel moist and cool as if you had taken a drink. Velu (Chellapandi) does this on the long walk between villages. The pebbles are beautiful, and secret. They are solely his. Watching him, we can observe his experience of them. Nobody else notices; nobody can take this away from him.
He has been in the village where he prefers to live, with relatives, but his violent alcoholic father Ganapathy (Karuththadaiyaan) wants to take him back to his own in an attempt to reclaim the boy's unhappy mother. This seems, as much as anything, to be a matter of spite. The people of the first village make no effort to conceal their dislike of him, but seem to feel that it is.

The sobering story of Pebbles, about domestic violence in India, is inspired by an incident in filmmaker P.S. Vinothraj’s real-life past, in which his sister was “chased away by her husband” and forced to walk 14 miles whilst cradling her baby in scorching terrain.
In Pebbles, set in a sun-baked, drought-stricken region of southeast India, a young boy (Chellapandi) follows his violent and alcoholic father (Karuththadaiyaan) on a quest to fetch back his mother, who has run away following his latest abuse.
During the film’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: International awards-season event, creative producer Amudhavan Karuppiah told us that the movie could help bring about change in the industry itself. “Producers like Mr. Vignesh Shivan and Ms. Nayanthara backing the film could encourage a lot of filmmakers to come up with such subjects, which are often turned a blind eye to,” he said.

The fields that once sustained Arittapatti village have perished from a long drought. All that’s left is parched desert without trees to screen the land from the sun. A day drunk Ganapathy (Karuththadaiyaan) plucks his son (Chellapandi) from class and immediately asks him to choose between himself or his mother. The little boy doesn’t reply, his frenetic father walks off, and the […]

The striking Pebbles is set in Arittapatti, a village in southern India terrorized by draught so persistent it has turned fields of green into yellowish dust and forced grandparents and grandchildren alike to spend their days trying to catch the mice that escape from their burning holes in the ground. Father Ganapathy should be out there with them but prefers to day-drink and chain-smoke instead. Perhaps he has been like this ever since his wife left him. Or maybe he’s always been that way, and that’s why she left him.
Director Vinothraj P.S. doesn’t tell us. Instead, he merely shows what’s happening. And that doesn’t just include important plot points like Ganapathy confronting his wife in her home village, or his disappointed son tearing up their bus fare. It also includes the 13-kilometer walk the two have to take to get back home as a result of said tearing.
